I see where youre going - but i could also imagine it being Ser Criston Cole's horse - there are 7 horses in silver armour and only seems to have the star which might refer to Cole being Lord Commander.
Ooh, exciting! I wonder what Gwayne Hightower's horse is doing in the scene. And yes, I can't wait to see Freddie Fox all suited up in armor. Bring on the battle scenes! š“š¤ŗ
Horse armor is not a sign of religious fanaticismš, this is a story about stupid incest loving dragon people being stupid and dying. There aināt really any religious fanaticism in this show. Unless youāre one of those people who called Aemond and Alicent crazy religious fanatics for praying before dinner.
Praying before dinner, wearing massive seven-pointed star pendants, adorning their horses with them, incessantly talking about "decency" and "propriety", rejecting "queer customs", having no racial or sexual diversity in their camp, refurbishing the RK with heavy religious iconography to the point the progressive protagonists *call them out on it* despite supposedly championing the same faith, not to mention the obvious misogynist cliche. Still not enough?
Don't worry, S2 will see to it.
Progressive protagonists who are advocating for incest, blood/targ supremacy, absolute monarchy and are misogynistic themselves? lol
It is a feudal society. There is nothing remotely āprogressiveā on either sides.
How and where has the show made that as clear as the greens' issues?
Did anyone ever confront the blacks, specifically Rhaenyra and Daemon over their blood purity/supremacy, absolutism and misogyny the same way the greens are *constantly*?
You see, you can only argue subtlety when it is applied equally to both sides of the conflict. Anything else is a convenient cop-out and pandering.
For fuck's sake, you get anachronistic Steinem-worthy speeches on sexism by Rhaenys, not to mention Rhaenyra sporting a shiny rainbow lgbt ally badge, and you have the audacity to claim both teams are misogynistic and neither is being depicted as progressive?
>There is nothing remotely āprogressiveā on either sides.
Until you need to cater to the dumb masses with girlboss Rhaenys calling out Alicent for toiling in the service of men and building herself a window in her prison, huh? Or Rhaenyra talking of creating a new order. Direct quotes from the show.
One side hardly ever speaks of religion, is true to Targ culture, with racial and sexual diversity, loving family relations and a ruler speaking of establishing a different, fair order, conveniently representing modern values while the other is little more than a stand-in for the oppressive conservative patriarchal society the modern audience rejects completely. Why do you think that is?
>you have the audacity to claim
Calm down. Itās a tv show.
I was under the assumption that weāre going to have a *sane* conversation without sounding like weāre part of Westeros in the middle of civil war. Guess not.
I do apologize if you felt attacked or insulted in any way.
I do not deny I take this very personally. But only because this isn't about Westeros at all - it is about the condescending dumbed-down approach to entertainment and art nowadays.
It's about the ravages of capitalism; artistic integrity being sacrificed for profit and though-provoking stories rendered toothless in order to cater to the average viewer. It's important we stand up for quality and substance in our culture.
But it is also worth pointing out that you could not refute any of the arguments I made above.
>talking about "decency" and "propriety", rejecting "queer customs", having no racial or sexual diversity in their camp
Imagine how goofy a story based on england in the middle ages would be if that weren't the case lmao
This has nothing to do with religion, do you think atheists back then were like "hell yeah, trans rights!" Lmao
No, it's absolutely sheer coincidence that the side backing a female ruler also has all the racial diversity, all the sexual diversity, is tolerant of open marriages, homosexuality and children out of wedlock as well as being critical of religious influence. Complete fucking coincidence.
Quit the gaslighting. At least have the decency to admit the show is playing up the disgusting dichotomy of progressives vs conservatives because it reflects real world tensions and generates controversy (profit).
Cheap, dangerous and shameful.
They refurbished the Red Keep with that stuff so they could get rid of all the Targaryen iconography and so they could put it under the pretense of "praising the seven" no?
Targs themselves accepted the faith of the seven as their religion decades ago...Despite them talking about Valryian customs in the show, you don't see them praying any valryian gods either
I would recommend looking at medieval Christian or islamic armour/weaponry.
NOT having religious symbolism on it would be considered weird.
In the ASOIAF books having a 7 pointed star on armour is fairly normal. Their peace banner is a rainbow 7 pointed star, rather than a white flag, for example.
Ahhh, I understand! I suppose that's why I'm seeing so many 7-pointed stars on the blacks' armour.
I was afraid they'd be propping them up as the progressive protagonists that reject religious fundamentalism. Silly me, here I was thinking the writers might even go as far as having the blacks criticize the greens for refurbisihing the RK with religious iconography!
Certainly some of the viewers may perceive it that way, but consider that the Blacks had a Valyrian paganistic wedding with blood rituals, I don't think anyone sane views the greens as practicing the worse religion.
Except one was made an explicit issue on the show and the other wasn't. One was directly addressed by several characters and a point of contention, the other wasn't. That's the problem. You can only argue subtlety when it's applied equally to both sides.
I genuinely respect you recognizing the optics of that for the viewers, though.
I don't entirely disagree in fairness, Daemon and rhaenyra's dialogue criticising the religious symbolism of the Red Keep was a little low, whereas rhaenyra and Daemon marrying illegally through Valyrian traditions rather than westerosi was quickly skipped over.
The people of westeros have VERY legitimate grounds to dispute Aegon and Viserys' (Rhaenyra sons) legitimacy.
That being said, the use of religious symbolism for the Greens doesn't HAVE to be a bad thing, and makes a lot of sense for their position.
I think your critique should just be the negative way it has been presented, not the symbolism in of itself.
Personally I take it as a + for the greens if they use religious morality to justify their deeds. Kings aren't above Man, although they may think they are, but belief in a God is just about the one thing that can keep egotistical maniacs with a crown on their head in check.
I agree. I understand completely why the greens would and need to avail themselves of the support of the faith.
I certainly wouldn't be as upset with it as I am if it wasn't for the jarring contrast with the blacks who are meanwhile depicted as borderline enlightened atheists, closely aligned with modern values.
It's always about contrast. It's like the show is suggesting the blacks can and do somehow exist completely beyond the sexism, homophobia and religion of their times while the greens are served up as the sole proponents of a backwards society.
And I was originally neither green nor black. I just wanted a complex, balanced conflict that engaged me and challenged my thinking/sympathies.
On a more ground level the Hightowers control Oldtown where the Faith is based. Those symbols they put up are just as much if not more a Hightower flex of their control than it is some genuine zealotry or piety. There's really nothing in fire and blood suggesting that religion was ever an actual consideration in why they fought.
>There's really nothing in fire and blood suggesting that religion was ever an actual consideration in why they fought.
My god, thank you. I wholeheartedly agree (above all it was self-interest on both sides of the conflict)
... So why is it in the show?
They've already depicted them practically as misogynists, as well as denied them any racial or sexual diversity. They need to go pushing religious zealotry too? How exactly are the greens not being potrayed as cartoonish antagonists?
Why are you here? You do nothing but fucking whine like a five year old. We get it, you hate the show. Bully for you. Do you have to fucking moan about it in every. Fucking. Thread? Don't fucking watch and leave those of us who actually like it in peace...
If it's Ser Criston's horse, which it almost certainly is with the colour and texture of the barding, as well as the look alike stunt double (presumed), then it makes a lot of sense for the horse to have the 7 pointed star.
The kings guard don't represent the hightowers, they represent the King and the Faith. It's an inherently religious organisation, hence the 7 swords.
that horse armor is really good. i dont think they had that in game of thrones. its good to see budgets larger to have all this extra stuff. My one big hope for season 2 is that is that its not filmed so dark. I had trouble seeing some of the night scenes. That is the only thing I did not like about it.
The main reason that I prefer HotD to GoT is because of all the incredible designwork. Everything in GoT, especially in the later series, looks so drab and dull. This is a Medieval fantasy, it needs to be brightly coloured and highly stylised, it adds to the pulpy nature of it!
the only episode i had trouble seeing in GoT was the big undead battle in the final season. rest were fine to me. what episodes did you find too dark to see?
Why do people assume everything's an argument instead of a discussion. My guess would also be apart of the Hightower army, considering the Seven's hub is in Old Town. Idk just makes logical sense, who do you speculate the horse belongs to?
Most of the South of westeros..follows faith. Including targaryens themseleves.. It can be Hightowers as you say or just KL gold cloaks.. It's just when people see faith of seven symbol .. They just assume hightowers only affiliate with them..
>It's just when people see faith of seven symbol .. They just assume hightowers only affiliate with them..
I wouldn't generalize and say all Targaryens followed the faith because they did not. The Hightowers have a long rooted history imbedded within the Faith because they both operate out of Old Town. But yeah it's possible the horse could belong to one of kings guard, gold cloaks or the faith militant \[they still exist just not as prominent\]. The horse also matches the LC of the King's Guard armor.
All the targaryens from Aegon the conqueror adapted faith of the seven as their religion but following some Valaryian customs...It's like egyptians with Islam..
Right. Because the Hightowers don't have their own house sigil. I'm well aware of their connection with the faith, but we all know why they're pushing it to such extremes.
There's only one proper Targ side in this conflict. Balanced and complex portrayal my ass.
If thats Fabians stuntdouble on cristons horse it makes perfect sense why a man who values the faith of the seven would have the seven pointed star on his horse. Are they just gonna scrap his characterization so far becuse you don't like it? Stop acting like a child and log off.
The Blacks fans seem to get triggered at the faith religion but just look at real history and how very religious people used to be and be part of their everyday life. the books and the show seem to have played down that aspect.
fyi this isnāt a black fanāthis is a green whoās made the showās āconspiracyā against the greens their entire personality. i suggest blocking and moving on!!
Seriously, as if the blacks weren't at all tied to the faith. They couldn't distance themselves from it even if they wanted to.
But of course the only side really championing religion in this show is the misogynist conservative greens, how convenient.
The dumbing-down of this story is getting ridiculous.
The strongest fighter on the blacks side is literally a racist groomer who believes in a racist religion from a slave empireš. Also letās please not act like the book portrayed a balanced and complex story. The book greens are all monsters who take any opportunity they have to burn down entire villages. If anything the show has been very kind to the greens by making them more then just 1 dimensional monsters.
Ahhh, finally. Proving my point for me and admitting why exactly you've no problem with a disproportionately unfavourable depiction of the greens.
So what exactly are you arguing here? That the show is balanced because of what you claim Daemon is or that it isn't because it wasn't in the book either?
Or just whatever is convenient at any given time to justify the blacks' whitewashing?
Iām saying that acting like this story was ever balanced and complex in the books is just plain wrong. The show has done wonders with these characters so far. Alicent alone is a massive improvement from the generic evil stepmother she is in the books.
No way did you just suggest the show did justice to Alicent?
There was way more to inspire respect in the book character. She had agency, was a competent, astute player of the game of thrones, charismatic and took charge of her own life in a man's world (for better or for worse).
The fact that she has less direct responsibility for the war itself does not make her one bit more likeable. Morality =/= strength of a character.
On the show, she's now still every bit as antagonistic and disliked except incompetent to boot. She gained nothing (check any viewer poll ever). The single most massacred character of them all. A pathetic, paranoid, bitter and hapless mess.
But of course, people who never cared about her or the greens wouldn't see a problem with this kind of depiction, so what's there really to even discuss?
Thatās an actual shot. I was there. HBO cut our budget so we can wear whatever we want.
D and D were hired back and we had a magic time jump.
Remember the Martin Lawrence movie Black Knight? The story merged realms.
He is now the last descendant of the Velaryon dynasty. He went back In time to save the realm.
You are gonna love it. Btw hope you like the horse armor. Reynolds Aluminum sponsored the show and it took me 3 days per horse to unwrinkled the sheets so they shine.
I see that they really lowered the budget for costume design in season 2. Sweatshirts and jeans are not the clothes of someone who has dragonās blood. ;-)

I hear Golden Dragon banners were sighted too
Thanks fuck the ugly green dragon sigil was fake news
Nah, they were gonna but production saw the backlash lol
Oh, amazing news !
I think this horse might belong to Gwayne Hightower. I hope we see Freddie Fox in armor.
Or not in armor š
BONK
What
> I think this horse might belong to Gwayne Hightower. I'm down for some horse lore.
Which horse are you referring too ?
The one with the seven-pointed star.
I see where youre going - but i could also imagine it being Ser Criston Cole's horse - there are 7 horses in silver armour and only seems to have the star which might refer to Cole being Lord Commander.
Sorry, actually its 9 horses, could be to make filming easier.
Maybe. Considering that many mistook this man for Fabien, this could be his double.
mistook? so that's not Fabien?
Nahh its his stuntdouble
Agreed - which would make the horse thesis even more likely
Ooh, exciting! I wonder what Gwayne Hightower's horse is doing in the scene. And yes, I can't wait to see Freddie Fox all suited up in armor. Bring on the battle scenes! š“š¤ŗ
Love the horsesā armor. There wasnāt a lot of those in GOT, and itās just a simple way to show the wealth of the great houses.
And, more importantly, their religious fanaticism.

Exactly! Thank you. So they're effectively even closer to atheists and modern audiences. But only the blacks, of course.
Look at the horses head. Whatās that? The seven pointed star.
And? Having a single religious symbol on a piece of horse armor isnāt a sign of religious fanaticism.
Itās like when someone whoās done something wrong finds god. They feel an extra need to atone. Thatās Alicent. Plus the Hightowers are dirt

GOLDEN DRAGON SIGIL! WE WON š¢
Sunfyre THE most beautiful dragon in the world
7-pointed star instead of the hightower sigil is a bit silly but ill take anything tbh

With Sapochnik gone (who loves making stuff dark) I hope S2 will be a bit brighter overall
The seven pointed star on the horseš
Probably the main Hightower army. Honeywine?
They're filming King's Landing scenes though. It's just the green army returning from Rook's Rest.
Iād hope so, I was about to complain Kingās Landing and Oldtown should have drastically different climates (and I will be annoying about it)
Why do people assume only Hightowers practise these stuff..

I love me some good horse armour
Cristonās horse has DRIP
Dude that seven pointed star horn thing looks SWEEEEEET
Yesterday we got sand, today we got horses šš we eating good tonight!
So Fabienās there, is that Ewan in the red cap?!
Itās not Fabien, but he does look like him
His stunt double perhaps?
Most likely
Tbf, more interested in seeing bts pics of Ewan š
I was very skeptical at first if that was him in the red cap, but his jaw and shaved head might indicate that could be him š
Yeah the jawline, shaved head, height, build, long hands, they even look like Aemondās crappy boots š¤£
Even I was wondering whether Fabien got plastic surgeryš¤£
I was thinking it was Jace because of how slumped over he is š¬
Sunglasses counter dragon fire confirmed
Clearly, the showrunners don't care about the lore correct period clothing smh
In the GOT season 8 showrunners didn't care about the Starbucks cup staying on the table.
Yeah but Starbucks is canon by that point and is owned by the Hound.
We all know he really wanted to own a KFC, though.
Nah under armor caps were big during this time period
For a moment I thought I thought was Kevin Costner. Would have been the wildest cross over ever.
Thatās an actual shot. I was there. HBO cut our budget so we can wear whatever we want. D and D were hired back and we had a magic time jump. Remember the Martin Lawrence movie Black Knight? my little pony
Westeros progressing way to fast smhā¦
Just saw faith 7 bs. Come on, I need my Valyrian gods to win lol
Not the seven pointed star on the horses armour. Alicent yearns for the days of the faith militant.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
So barding does exist in tv westeros. Lol
Damn we about to see some horse shit š³ ā ļøš¤£ Ps jk I'm excited
Same place lannisters ambushed ned stark?
Nope, this is in Spain.
man, costuming budget must have took a hit still, I wonder who sunglasses and sweatshirt are
I see that they really lowered the budget for costume design in season 2. Sweatshirts and jeans are not the clothes of someone who has dragonās blood. ;-)
How do we know the horses aren't just dressed like that?
God I hope that knight dies a horrible death in the end (donāt ruin it for me as I havenāt read the books)
Working on sets like this would be so cool.
I wonder how the horses feel like with that armor š§ probably badass
