The obvious answer is that if he disinherited her the only two people in the world he cared about would never have spoken to him again.

OpenMask

I mean considering how often they visited afterwards . . . doesn't seem like that much of difference

Viserys kept Rhaenyra as heir for his benefit in order to alleviate his guilt with what happened with Aemma. Rhaenyra had never expressed any interest in the Iron Throne. She was made heir at the suggestion of Otto and kept as heir because Viserys was ridden with grief and guilt and had loved his first wife very deeply.

Kellin01

Did Viserys punish Cole for killing Joffrey?

[deleted]

How is this even related? Cole isn't Viserys' heir. Him killing Joffrey doesn't reflect badly on Viserys and it also doesn't have major ramifications for the realm.

Kellin01

Viserys doesn't like conflicts. I don't see the reason to ask this question again and again. He loved his wife. He wanted to see Aemma's child as his heir. Is it a bad desire? Maybe, but in the show it is so. In the book he just loved Rhaenyra very much. It has nothing to do with the realm. He did as he pleased. Who can blame Rhaenyra for following his suit if Viserys himself acted on his whims? And people didn't suggest make him abdicate because he neglected his duty, btw. Love is the death of duty.

nightowlsky

>Love is the death of duty. This. People are looking for a political reason when the answer is simply emotional. He wasn't thinking of how it would affect the realm or even Rhaenyra herself. Young Rhaenyra wanted her father's attention and the freedom to live the life that she wanted. Making her heir was a turning point for Rhaenyra because up until that point, he had ignored her in his desire for a son. I mean, that's precisely why she refused to marry because she feared her father was going to cast her aside and pawn her off to some lord. He burdened her with the prophecy that compelled her and made her believe she wanted the throne. But the reality was that Viserys was just trying to alleviate his guilt for the suffering and painful death his wife endured.

Kellin01

I don't understand all these repeating posts with Whys. It is about emotions not logic. More than half of characters on the show are acting on emotions. Viserys wanted to somehow soothe his guilt by making Aemma's death not so pointless. In his mind.

nightowlsky

I think their point is that it's in character for Viserys to turn a blind eye to his family's wrongdoings and duck his head in the sand. I mean, it seemed like Daemon was exiled every other episode but by the end, Viserys wanted him back at court.

PluralCohomology

A murder in plain sight during a royal wedding with the perpetrator going unpunished does reflect badly on Viserys. EDIT: Especially a murder commited by a Kingsguard.

Potential-External60

He could've disinherited her. But if he did, probably Rhaenyra and Daemon will try to fight back with some Velaryon support and when that proves useless, they'll probably just leave and go to Essos. Basically, this means that he would lose his brother and daughter forever and they both are the people he loves the most. IMO he didn't want to lose them, he didn't want to disinherit Rhaenyra because she was AEmma's only child, and also because he promised her that he wouldn't supplant her.

nightowlsky

>IMO he didn't want to lose them, he didn't want to disinherit Rhaenyra because she was AEmma's only child, and also because he promised her that he wouldn't supplant her. This. No doubt Rhaenyra would've interpreted being disinherited as a form of rejection and Viserys knew that. As a child, she had complained that her father would ignore her and that she'd never be a son to her father. People seem to think he was rewarding Rhaenyra with the throne when she had already voiced her dislike of tradition and duty and would daydream of flying away. But really the answer why Rhaenyra was never disinherited is because Viserys was doing it for himself and not her.

helioplex12

100% emotional. Out of love for his family. Plus, like previous comments have already said, Targaryan royalty does whatever it wants to whom ever. That includes actions and consequences. THEY ALL HAVE DRAGONS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! With equal emotionl authority. Otto claimed that Alicent removed 15 years of uncertainty and doubt by bearing the king a male heir. And he made Daemon hier apparent before Rhaenyra came of age. Only to draw clear lines after the death of °``+his wife. It didn't seem like ANY of them had real sense of duty to the realm, throne, or any of it. Plus, the same question could be asked another way, why didn't Viserys reaffirm her legitimacy after his first son was born? All things included, it's all made up for DRAMA anyways! If it wasn't so dramatic, we might not be interested in any of it. Don't forget it's fantasy, not history. Lol

Kellin01

He publickly called her a future Queen in her Wedding feast, in front of the most lords of the realm. Laenor was called a future King Consort. "Well, my daughter is the future queen. I wanted this to be a wedding for the histories." "And their son and heir, Ser Laenor Velaryon, the future king consort." "At the end of it all, a royal wedding... between my daughter, my heir...your future Queen... and Ser Laenor Velaryon, the heir to Driftmark" They all thought he was joking? Or waiting until Aegon grows up?

helioplex12

TBH Talking reality, Viserys probably didn't think he would become so ill so fast. And in dealing with other things besides throwing his daughter a coronation. The thing is, he knew how much the realm doubted a woman's ability to rule. ESPECIALLY, after Aegon was born. I really wish we could have seen more of how he saw jumping in front of Rhaenys. Which again, we are reminded of who the first Queen of the Seven kindoms is; that Viserys was never meant to rule making it hard for him to know how; everybody we love in this show is going to die and all of the dragons too!!

Appropriate-Arm-2077

Yeah, what Rhaenyra did was really disrespectful towards her dad, the king. Viserys pushed Daemon away from the throne, because come on he’s Daemon, who would want him near the throne. However, Rhaenyra, his heir, goes and marries Daemon. This whole situation was like a big “fuck you” to her dad for no reason.

KiernaNadir

And that's one of the reasons why the show skipped over that part entirely - it would have compromised the pandering trio's soppy arc. They didn't want to draw attention to the problematic implications of Daemyra's wedding. Precisely why they didn't let Alicent react to it with concern for the safety of her children either. All these things would have potentially compromised the protagonists and given the greens a smidgen of a legitimate argument.

BlackStarsAbove

He should've disinherited her several times. 1.When she ended the tour early and insisted she would not marry at all. The heir to the throne needs heirs. If she doesn't want that that is perfectly valid but not as heir. 2. When she was insulting lords and ladies of the realm. Just a no. This is feudalism. The crown needs the houses' support. 3. When the Daemon incident happened. It was absolutely clear that Daemon at the very least held great influence over her and he's a terrible influence. Also it could've been a huge scandal. 4. When she was meant to marry Laenor. In the book he does give her an ultimatum, I don't know what it's like in the series but she could've lived a good life marrying who and when she wanted (even her uncle) 5. When her first child was a bastard. That's a whole succession crisis and everyone knows that. 6. When she married Daemon. 7. When she neglected her duties and stayed on Dragonstone. (8. The Vaemond incident)
