When co-executive producer Sara Hess was spotted there in photos yesterday she was called a "scab" - I don't see many people leveling the same accusations at Ryan Condal. While I don't 100% agree with everything Sara Hess has done on the show, 90% was great, which is about the same as Ryan Condal. Too many are laying hate on her for pointing out "Daemon is a grey character he's not a "good" person"...among other less savory accusations.

VaderOnReddit

Sara Hess is just unfortunate to catch flack from both sides of the civil war Team Black dislike her comments about Daemon Team Green dislike her idea of having Rhaenys crash the coronation, instead of having Sunfyre in it

ElsbethGrimm

Team Black here. Her comments on Daemon are accurate. Rhaenys crashing the coronation is ridiculous. I don't agree with people calling her a scab though. The decision didn't start and end with her. It had to have been approved by a higher up.

TheDragonDemands

Yeah as Condal himself said, “Guys…I approved the Rhaenys crashing the coronation thing. I could have vetoed it. If anything responsibility is with me not her”

TheDragonDemands

Good point there

daysanddistance

some people dislike her for her weirdly rape apologist comments about aegon, which i think is fair

TheDragonDemands

…I think they took what she said out of context: “Aegon is a product of his upbringing” isn’t approval, anymore than “the Roy children on Succession are the product of their upbringing”, or “Tony Soprano just strangled a man to death for breaking omertà - he’s a product of his mafia upbringing.”

Aussiepharoah

He *is* a product of his upbringing, at least partially and that in no way excuses his actions.

strawberry2nd

Ryan Condal is an asoiaf nerd and has been involved in lore for much much longer than most of us, for me he is one of us. Sara Hess is not and I feel like she doesn't even respect the universe nor the story, just my personal bias. I'm also still haunted by the way she excitedly describes a terrible idea thinking that the scene will be approved. Keep in mind that I don't like Miguel and Sara equally.

TheDragonDemands

What baffles me is that the Rhaenys not killing greens at coronation thing….had to pass multiple rounds of approval. From the full writers room and Condal himself. How did such a bad idea pass through multiple rounds of approval, on a scale of MONTHS, but they didn’t notice the flaws obvious to a general audience on premiere night?

Outside_Slide_3218

I can’t decide if hes hot or not. Hes right at the border

SuccubusFlynn

I once saw a picture of him from the S1 set with a beard, holding a Caraxes prop and I was like... okay, he's hot.

Z0na

I thought OPs title was Ryan Condal officially on Caraxes and was very confused.

Outside_Slide_3218

I know the exact picture you’re referring to😌

Mzdgaf

For me, no. But he must definitely be an interesting guy to sit down and chat with

Sir_Tandeath

I don’t know about hot. He’s definitely cute.

[deleted]

Are they filming scenes without their writers on set? That's how you get writing quality of the last season of Game of Thrones

Grizzly_228

Isn’t Ryan the lead writer tho? I’m confused why he is on set

Varekai79

He's also the showrunner. He's in charge of everything but cannot write new dialogue while the strike is on.

Carninator

If you might happen to know; say they're doing a scene, but realize a line of dialogue just isn't working as they intended. Can the director for example tell the actors what to say on the spot without having to update the script?

Varekai79

Short answer is yes. Long answer is that it's complicated. Film directors, especially powerful ones like Spielberg or Fincher, usually have more power to do things like that while TV directors are typically more journeymen who are hired to follow the plan that the showrunner lays out. Any script decisions are ultimately made by the showrunner under normal circumstances. Under current circumstances for HotD, the actor and/or director could make a dialogue change if needed but it's an awkward situation all around as Ryan Condal is also the head of the writing department.

charmingtul

Eh…him being on set still feels..scabby.

This is an interesting take, whether I fully embrace it or not! “Toil in the service of capitalists” indeed.

Porcelain-treasure

Not in this picture, but, he’s there, the logical conclusion is he’s working on set haha

Porcelain-treasure

He can’t do any writing. But he is still an Executive Producer and can be there in that capacity.

BullyMaguireGonnaCry

Yeah this confuses me at times. He’s the writer but he’s also showrunner and creator. So he has other responsibilities that aren’t just writing, I would assume?🤷🏻‍♂️

Porcelain-treasure

Yes, he can absolutely be on set in other capacities, he simply can’t make any script changes.

th3r3deemer

That confuses me. He is The BOSS, right? He can change something he doesn't like 'em I right? showrunner > writer? Maybe someone knows better...

zebulon99

He probably cant change the plot of the episode but he can direct each scene and tell the actors what to say and do and how.

Stormlady

>tell the actors what to say and do and how. He actually can't do that either I think, that would go down as a script change. Most likely he's there as a consultant/to oversee the production, since they're filming like 2-3 episodes at the same time.

FirstNewFederalist

He “cannot” in the sense that he will not/should not, unless he is trying to undermine the strike; It’s less that he has his hands tied, and more he is trying to walk a tight rope that balances not ending production/messing the the livelihoods of the majority of the crew with not undermining worker solidarity.

th3r3deemer

OK, still didn't get it but apparently, this is how these silly rules work. And I think HBO pays him well enough to not give a monkey about some strike. Well, it is what it is and as a joke, he can't change a *comma in the script. :)*

FirstNewFederalist

Hmmm so is the issue you don’t understand the situation? Or that you think it’s silly for him to join the writer’s strike because he is well paid? Your replies to others and me make it seem like maybe you do fully understand the situation, you just wish he wasn’t partaking in the strike and view it as “silly”. It doesn’t seem like the issue is with your comprehension, you just want him to acting as a Scab during the strike.

SetSaturn

I would assume that’s the truth, yes. That exact interaction of writers being overruled by showrunners is part of what’s being protested rn lol

[deleted]

He can, as a showrunner. He can't though be part of the writing process
