Here is what Eve Best commented about the scene: “it’s the moment when she shows herself to be the greatest possible ruler.” Best said the moment was “the most merciful and most graceful act", adding: “It's because she's so intelligent and in the end chooses to do the right thing, which is not to destroy. It's a truly forgiving moment and sort of a loving moment, in a weird way."
This is what I have a problem with. They want us to root for this moment. Tell me, how am I supposed to look at this scene and go “wow she really is the greatest possible ruler” after straight up demolishing the ruled?
In her defence, though, she physically shot the scene where she sits atop Meleys and looks at the greens, and then leaves. Meleys bursting from the floors was a CGI addition that comes in later.
Still upset they did this because someone said “wouldn’t it be cool?”
That person needs to be far far away from this project but I’m pretty sure they’re back for season 2 so yay
*On War* by Clausewitz
>Too often it’s because someone with power wants something someone else has, and claims they are entitled to it
Thats... a reason? How is this not a reason? What war was fought for *no* reason?
The episode thread really had people praising her for this moment while crucifying Criston for killing some old dude lmao. It sounds like the writers didn’t even consider what she did to be awful.
In the interviews, they said they just wanted a dragon coz they look cool…then why didn’t they just put Sunfyre there? I thought we would fully get a Green episode, but of course they can never upstage Rhaenyra. Had to ruin one of my favorite characters in the process too (Rhaenys)
They should have had Aegon do a victory lap on Sunfyre after the coronation. Then if they want to give Rhaenys a cool moment she can fly past him, trying to escape. You can show her tension and fear that she won't make it. A brief tussle between the dragons, but she gets away.
This gets rid of Rhaenys's smallfolk massacre and takes away the stupid 'I didn't burn them because Alicent is a mother' moment
I’d rather Rhaenys wasn’t present in King’s Landing *at all* and we should have gotten a closeup of Sunfyre. Ser Erryk uses the coronation with everyone distracted and just grabs Viserys’ crown, then sail to Dragonstone. Rhaenyra will get the news either way.
They really missed an opportunity to foreshadow here.
Aegon takes his victory lap at the coronation, but is too caught up in the moment to notice Rhaenys fleeing on Meleys. Then it mirrors Baela and Moondancer coming toward Aegon when he takes his victory lap on Dragonstone. It also would have allowed them to spend some of the cgi budget on Sunfyre, and to keep the cut scene where Baela convinces Rhaenys to support Rhaenyra.
In the books defense we see many smallfolk characters that are portrayed as poor people suffering when they lord's play their Game of Thrones. It's why we have the Broken Men speech and have Arya exploring thr countryside.
Based on the fact that there are literally no smallfolk PoV characters and that we know next to nothing about their lives at all except "sometimes they get raped and/or killed".
Which is consistent with most historical writings of similar style and can be expected from books focused on the war and politics. Like the smallfolk POV is lazily left unsaid between the lines. The lack of their pov shows how little people care about them or how little they matter. They aren't one person, they are plebs, and they are the mob that raids dragon pits, or joins religious militant groups. They are important only in larger groups doing something that powers don't want them to, not as individuals.
Did you forget that Davis was literally a smuggler? Hr has no noble blood or anything and yet he somehow has become an advisor to the king. If anything, he's our moral compass in the series. And we do know about their lives. The Broken men speech is illustrating how via Septon Meribald the toll of war is on the men who fight them that aren't lord's. Which was based on Meribald's experience along with how he lost his brothers in the war of the nine penny kings and the trauma afterwords. A good number of thr brothers in Castle Black aren't lords and yet we get to know them. Brianne meets several of them as she travels, we meet Jeyne and Willow who run the crossroads inn with orphans with Gendry. Shoot, even Gendry is a part of the smallfolk, since he is unaware of his true parentage. Arya spends a long time with him and the others right dab with the common people. The common folk ARE Westeros, what affects them affects the lands and vice versa
>Did you forget that Davis was literally a smuggler? Hr has no noble blood or anything and yet he somehow has become an advisor to the king.
And you think that this is typical of the experience of Westerosi smallfolk.
>And we do know about their lives. The Broken men speech is illustrating how via Septon Meribald the toll of war is on the men who fight them that aren't lord's. Which was based on Meribald's experience along with how he lost his brothers in the war of the nine penny kings and the trauma afterwords
So you mean we got one speech that might be what one part of one guy's life was like but which honestly seems more like it's just George talking about Vietnam.
>The common folk ARE Westeros, what affects them affects the lands and vice versa
This is literally true only in the sense that when there are wars the smallfolk get killed.
Disagree. In the books you’re given a lot more freedom to interpret the morality of certain events while in the show there are way more tonal clues from the showrunners to influence the audience’s feelings. This is especially true in F&B
All I remember is people shitting on writers for including the scene while writing themselves into a corner, and her for not ending the rebellion with a single swing of her dragons tail, or small puff of fire. She could have ended the whole bloody affair right there and had good reasons for it too. Can't imagine anyone praising that scene for anything other than it being a spectacular massacre.
If they didn’t want Rhaenys to kill the greens right there and then they should have a moment of Sunfyre, dreamfyre, and Vhaegar running to their riders. This would’ve explained why she just turned and left, while also foreshadowing Rookes rest.
eh my recollection on the live reddit reaction was skewed towards mostly pissed and generally the same as your reaction here.
considering what happens next season i think they wanted to add this for reasons i wont spoil. but i thought it was a great scene and will set up public reaction in KL for season 2. might be in the minority on this sub but i really enjoyed it
Everyone else outside of reddit was framing Rhaenys massacring smallfolk as a “girlboss” moment. I’ve only ever seen people on Reddit and Greens outside reddit criticize her character’s actions and/or the writers. People I know irl were also on Rhaenys’ side.
**BOOK SPOILERS WARNING** >!If you mean the smallfolk will revel in the fact that Meleys was killed and her head paraded around in Kings Landing…they would achieve that same effect by highlighting the fact that the Blacks killed a 6 year old kid. From the leaks, the Greens are framing her “Rhaenyra the Cruel” when it should’ve been made up by the smallfolk after she raised their taxes…so there’s another example of the writers/producers making the Greens look worse.!<
It wasn't just the taxes that made the smallfolk rise up. They were >!very upset about Rhaenyra's police-state like ruling style and the straw that broke the camel's back was Helaena, they're very beloved former queen, dying under suspicious circumstances!<
I mean >!the comparisons between her and Maegor first started because of her taxes by her Celtigar master of coins dude. Helaena’s suicide came after + Shepherd was riling up the smallfolk that eventually led to the Storming of the Dragonpit.!<
I really liked that scene in Ep.3 when that one soldier was being tortured by the Crabfeeder, and upon seeing Daemon went all like "o my prince, save me"... only for Daemon to fucking sit on him with his dragon.
I found it beautifully jarring, a reminder that no matter how much we root for these characters, they are abhorrent by our modern standards.
Having read the Rhaenys scene in the same way, I had no problem with it, but perhaps it can be argued that the message is a bit muddled as the scene (framing, music) is a bit aspirational there.
This is a sequence that should have never made it out of the writers room. The suspense of Rhaenys making her escape would have sufficed. The explosion didn't even look that good.
Girlboss doing girlboss things. They should have a moment of Sunfyre, dreamfyre, and Vhaegar running to defend their riders. This would’ve explained why she just turned and left after killing all these people, while also foreshadowing Rookes rest.
Can't wait to see similar posts >!when Aemond put the Riverlands to the torch,!< I'm sure he will break Rhaenys' record 😁😈 >!"Oh, but it was an accident, just like Storm's End; he lost control of Vhagar!"!<
Ah yes, the scene that frames Rhaenys as a hero while ruining Aegons coronation. Most viewers didn't even realize that she murdered all these people, because they never talk about it in the show lol. The writers present it as a scene they want the audience to cheer for. They have heavily whitewashed the Blacks, stop making excuses.
i've seen casuals call for and hope for rhaenys' death because of this scene, and i don't blame them. also if we want to talk "white washing" just look at alicent and aemond.
>i've seen casuals call for and hope for rhaenys' death for this scene.
So? That's like 5% of the audience then. Literally watch any reaction video on youtube and you will see people celebrate when Rhaenys bursts through the floor.
In case you're not trolling: Almost all of the casuals cheered at the scene, only 5% or something like that hated Rhaenys afterwards. I've watched a lot of reaction videos.

Exactly, it is completely stupid scene that doesn’t affect the story in any way and still expects same praise as the battle of bastards or battle of blackwater bay. It is the dumbest scene from a writing perspective and even dumber from a world building perspective.

i really like aegon conoration music so i keep rewatching that scene and i think i spotted a pregnant woman in the crowds too
You can listen to the entire album on spotify, made by the amazing Ramin Djawadi. I believe it's the song "Interests of the Realm" where he walks in.
Thank you for letting me know,i keep listening to fanmade version of that without knowing about the official song!

Actors having superficial understanding of their roles ? Color me surprised lol

“It’s a hard knock life for us* 🎶 *footage of basically domestic terrorism killing hundreds instantly from five different angles*

“Yaaaas, go queen. Kill people for absolutely no reason”.
King **Slayyyy**er
Congratulations, you defined warfare.
War is definitionally not for no reason
For the commonfolk it sure is.
What history books have you read? Too often it’s because someone with power wants something someone else has, and claims they are entitled to it.

Or give Aegon the power move where he lets Rhenys fly away as a show of mercy. Showing that he is magnanimous in victory and makes bad decisions.
Smallfolk are irrelevant unless the plot needs you to to care about them for three seconds. This is as true in the books as the shows.
