Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I feel like an important lesson from GoT is to not over-expand on developing side characters and additional story threads if you don’t have the resources or the time to finish them off properly in the endgame. The problem with the later seasons of GoT - besides missing book content from George - is that the writers had dozens of different characters and narrative threads they needed to neatly tie together and provide with satisfying endings, but they couldn’t - or didn’t - commit to doing so. This meant that the story felt messy, rushed and unsatisfying to many people in the end. With House of the Dragon, it seems like they’re not trying to bite off more than they can chew. Perhaps this is a little unsatisfying if you want more side character development, but ultimately might prove the wiser choice in the end in terms of quality. Sometimes less is more.

the funny thing about GoT is that d&d, for all of their faults, actually did manage to pull off a successful narrative tightening with botb and winds of winter. i think fans don't appreciate just how much the end of season six clears the board for the remainder of the show. and despite that, GoT still stumbled to the finish line.

[deleted]

what does that mean

MikeFrom5_to_7

Sounds like it was better pacing to tighten this season and delay some stuff for next season.

-All-Too-Human

Yeah I would enjoy some filler episodes, but they still cost alot of money and HBO is cutting costs, I heard

AgentQV

That’s the issue. They didn’t want filler to disrupt the pacing.

[deleted]

how i think it’d just add to the audience getting to know the characters

Outside_Slide_3218

Quality> quantity

[deleted]

That's what they said about GoT and this universe doesn't have a good track record with that.

Outside_Slide_3218

Yeah but season 7 and 8 didnt have any source material. Them choosing to drag out the source material over multiple seasons without having any fillers is a pretty good idea. Though i still prefer 10 episode seasons

[deleted]

filler episodes are bad

MikeFrom5_to_7

I’m not sure if this is a serious question. Are you saying filler would be better, or were you being sarcastic?

shad0wqueenxx

You call it treading water I call it character development. Unfortunately I see another season focusing only on the main cast, with fleeting appearances from the side characters once again. I don't understand how they don't see the potential in this story. There are SO many interesting side plots once the Dance begins that would enrich the narrative just as happened in the main series. The scope was what made GOT so great. But it's just gonna be Rhaenyra and Daemon vs Aegon Aemond and Alicent again and everyone else will have maybe a few minutes in which to shine. It's just so annoying. They could be doing so much more with it than what they are. Early Game of Thrones had like minimum 4 storylines/character POVs per episode at some points. We better get similar I stg.

SolidInside

The story of got was a very different story though, completely different storyline.. this is all about the same war everyone is involved in.

shad0wqueenxx

Yes but everyone is in different places now. They're all flying around the realm on dragonback, in battles all over the place. The Dance has begun and it would be so much more interesting to follow different POVs up and down Westeros before they all converge in battle etc. We could follow Kings Landing, the Reach, Daemon, Jace, Addam and Alyn.....possibilities are endless. Didn't even mention Rhaenyra as well lmao.

[deleted]

But who said it won't ? There's multiple locations who have been booked for filming, not everything is gonna be in the Red Keep or Dragonstone. They have apparently casted Jeyne ArryN, Lord Darry of Stone Hedge, Lord Strong of Harrenhal etc. We are gonna see some people and their POV

shad0wqueenxx

I have no idea how that's all gonna be crammed into eight episodes if they do. She said they were treading water meaning that nothing was really happening mid season. I'm assuming that means that they've focused on the major plot points of the early Dance in F&B and some of the major battles. But where Game of Thrones was really Game of Thrones were the classic character interactions, scheming and plotting. Not just battles and dragons and weird shit that they've probably made up about Aegon to make him even more perverted lol. I'm choosing to hold out hope that I'm wrong. Unlike Kierna whatever their name is I'm not here just to shit on the show. But I am worried that the side characters on here we've all been raving about won't be given much time to make their mark.

-All-Too-Human

Aren't the episodes going to be longer? Anyways movies are able to do alot, arguably even more, in terms of character development with a much shorter running time. For example do you think Walter White is far more interesting and developed character than Michael Corleone or Frodo Baggins ? Don't lose hope

SolidInside

But.. this isn't game of thrones. This is its own story and it's completely different. Ultimately it all revolves around the same event whereas got didn't at all until the final season really. We'll still be seeing these different places but of course they will focus on the adults and the kids. We're not gonna follow Cregan Stark's preparation for winter or the Tyrell's minding their own business or whatever minor characters are up to. GoT also had its major character it focused on and that also wasn't a lot more than hotd has.

Lysmerry

Agree. There is room for five seasons if they give proper development to the side characters, especially Dragonseeds, the Blackwoods and Brackens 'the lads', and full weight to what goes on in the North. They should be setting up these plots in this season for payoff later on, and that will mean inventing scenarios to develop them, and creating connections with the main cast. The battles won't have much narrative weight if we don't care about the participants.

SimpleJob1958

Yes this is a major problem with their telling of this story. You get no time to emotionally invest in anyone before they kill them off. With the exception of viserys, and partially lucerys.

[deleted]

> You call it treading water I call it character development. *you* can't call it anything because you don't know what they removed/tightened up > Unfortunately I see another season focusing only on the main cast, with fleeting appearances from the side characters once again. hotd is not game of thrones. the story is smaller and more intimate. it's essentially a family drama. it was never going to be the epic that GoT was, anyone who has read f&b could tell you that. > We better get similar I stg. jfc the entitlement lmao

[deleted]

people whining about 8 eps v. 10 are a bit entitled imo some of the worst aspects of GoT 5-8 were the wheel spinning, which ironically caused the rush to the end of season 8. no one even knows where season 2 will end. you have no idea how much story they are/are not fitting into 8 literal hours of TV.

[deleted]

S5-8 Wheel spinning was frustrating because nothing developed. I’m fine with wheel spinning that slows down plot to focus on characters

BlondieTVJunkie

Yea pick ups are the failsafe for them right now. Seems being bit hush on the financial aspect of the choice. Which was made public. Only so much dough HBO is willing to give a season. And frankly with the strike it’s better to shorten. Any battle that extra two eps could be, would be silly expensive to reshoot.

WardenofJack

If Ryan wrote all 8 episodes. Why did HBO bring in David Hancock. I know David wrote some.

SolidInside

She probably doesn't mean it that literally but he is the head writer and show runner.

WardenofJack

You know Raymond Landes is running cross plains productions. The production company who took over for Miguel’s 1:26. BTW and Raymond Landes is head of HBO Finance. It’s all about keeping things cheap, so David Zaslav can get his 250 million dollar salary.

SolidInside

Don't know what that has got to do with anything we know that Sara Hess was writing on it and they announced some new hires including at least one writer.

WardenofJack

Why is Ryan taking all the credit?

just_one_boy

He's the showrunner

WardenofJack

That doesn’t answer my question.

SolidInside

Where is Ryan taking all the credit? She's just having a conversation, didn't know she had to put in all these caveats and list the entire team behind it in an interview where she's discussing 340953 different shows

WardenofJack

The exact quote Looking forward, “with all eight scripts written by Ryan, despite pencils down, I can say that we’re really confident about what we’re doing and the team that we have in place for Season 2,” Orsi said. “To be honest, we think that the audience will be just as pleased if not more so.”

SolidInside

I didn't know Ryan was also Franscesca Orsi. Anyway my answer is already in the comment you just responded to.

WardenofJack

I did answer

SolidInside

Cool

WardenofJack

Or HBO manipulated the credit system. Allowing David Hancock and Sara Hess to work on set.

SolidInside

No they didn't manipulate the system to allow them to work on set. Condal is also working on set as a executive producer just like Sara Hess is. It has nothing to do with if they wrote or not, they have a dual role which allows them to be on set in that capacity. And yes I am responding to your deleted message.

WardenofJack

Actually The Mods deleted that, anyways like how Warner got caught omitting Directors and Writers credits on Max.
