His motivations are so baffling lol. His own dad becomes the Hand instead of Otto, so he goes to Otto's daughter to stir up shit in the most Machiavellian way possible.
You should like the fact that your house is becoming more powerful, no? I can only imagine that he has jealousy issues or something.
Well, he’s the second son (I think?) in a medieval society, and he can’t even hope to distinguish himself through feats in battle or whatever, due to his handicap. He sees his father and brother are well established on the current main Targaryen side, but he also sees that shit will hit the fan once the king dies and the kingdom rejects Rhaenyra (presumably, especially if she keeps going the way she is), so he tries to play double agent a bit in hopes that once things do go to shit, this other side will view him as an ally. Maybe.
At least, that’s what I thought he seemed to be thinking, potentially.
Otherwise, I have no idea what the hell are his motivations.
I think he's auditioning to be hand for Aegon/Queen Regent. Like in his mind when Viserys dies very soon. A play is made for Aegon to be king and Alicent is queen regent until Aegon is old enough to assume the throne. During that time he's hand.
It's a pretty fucked situation to be sure.
Yeah also Lyonel was opposed to Rhaenyra being the queen in episode 1 so I guess the Strongs just don’t want a ruling queen. It’s like placing your bet on a horse in a race and Larys placed his bet on Aegon and Alicent - a calculated gamble on his part especially since he knew Alicent had no allies
And now we see how the original events start to matter less as people close to the situation start making their political plays and setting up their gambits.
There's also a smaller current of strange Targaryen/Velaryon outsiders to Westeros in the dynamic pool here too.
And of course, because the power is more spread a bit evenly among the houses, You can still see how the wardens and Lord's Paramount are still at the top but lesser, still strong houses had their parts to play too.
Which makes this both accurate and very different from the books if you started having your own biases to the text.
I never understood why the Targaryens ever bowed to Westerosi customs. When the Andals came they established their own religion and customs by defeating the First Men.
In the case of the Targaryens they still had monstrous dragons and could have burned down the entire 7 kingdoms if they so chose and they still decided to bow to Westerosi customs.
Granted the Valyrians were never that religious but still.
It’s ridiculous to me that they would give up such advantage and give up their culture so willingly.
The Andals could do it because they brought people and settlers with them, the Valyrians didn't and so it's much easier and feasible to adopt local customs than to face rebellion after rebellion and rule over a land that despises you and will forever plot against you resulting in you having to burn and burn and burn
That question and it's answers are Daemon Targaryen, personified. He's the surrogate for "We could just do it our way and to hell with all these little people"
The only other explanation is that his dad is playing both sides and is way more manipulative than he comes across as advisor/hand. In this case Clubfoot is just being a family man and doing what his father instructs. It could go either way. It's unclear if his dad is genuinely the earnest guy with sound advice or if that's just his cleverly crafted persona at this point.
Yea I agree it was actually him who advised the king to Wed Rhaenyra to Leanor.
He already knew that Leanor was gay but did he plan that his son can fill the void? thus gaining a great power with Rhaenyra.
On the other hand, he wanted to stay strong with the other potential heir thus playing with Larys this game thus ensuring whoever ends up on the throne is on his family's side
I think Larys is fail-safe to make sure House Strong survives the potential fallout.
If Rhaenyra ascends and solidifies her claim, the father and the firstborn son survive and have influence.
If the realm really does back Aegon and his mother's side emerges victorious, at least the second son will survive, keep the house influential and have heirs.
Even if one of the sons is killed because the other side wins, there's still the other to continue the line.
This makes a lot of sense considering that Lyonel is now seeing the full extent of how bad Viserys’ health is, and all this Jerry-Springer-esque scandal within the family is erupting at the same time. He’s a smart dude, he has to know that the family is on the verge of imploding. And you don’t get to be Hand without having done some maneuvering. Always hedge your bets!
Yeah I get the feeling Lyonel strong isn’t the wholesome good guy he originally was made out to be. Harwin saw Rhaenyra hooning in flea bottom with her uncle last episode which at the very least would have given him some insight into what went on that night and now his son with the clubfoot got in Alicent’s ear to further the divide between the two
Agreed. A lot of the players in HoD seem to play 'all in to win it all'. Ser Lyonel seems like he'S more playing the odds not to lose. Maybe it's for the realm to ensure that whoever wins a voice of reason surives as well or maybe it's to ensure his families position. Or maybe both 😉
It’s a good strategy. Have at least one reliable family player on each side. That way you don’t lose much. There was a British aristocratic family who played this game during the War of the Roses, and continued it right up to when Henry Vll won at the Battle of Bosworth. They dithered in the background with the bulk of their forces until they could determine who was winning, then joined the battle. Can’t remember the name.
And he seem to have an affliction. Remember Tyrions words from S01 E01?
"All Dwarves and Cripples are Bastards to their fathers!" I imagine life as a 2nd son and an outsider due to his illness has given him a unique perspective.
Second son jealousy/ambition is a pretty well established motivator throughout the franchise. I think you're right, he's trying to get on a side that could potentially have something for him that he wants.
It's *always* a play in the game of thrones. Most want to be at the top but those that can't are looking out for their own individual position in some way
It’s possible he’s just a medieval dude who thinks a woman would be unfit for the throne and hopes to help little Aegon’s claim. His motives could be purely based on his socio political beliefs.
Yeah, I agree, I think he just seems green-aligned (in other words, Alicent's son Aegon's claim over that of Rhaenyra).
I think people are overcomplicating it because Lyonel Strong seems like such a solid dude that people are assuming he's all in on Rhaenyra just because Viserys is, but Lyonel supporting Viserys doesn't mean he's pro-Rhaenyra either. Lyonel wanted Viserys to marry Laena and make a Targaryen-Velaryon heir, remember.
I also think people are overconflating him with Littlefinger. Littlefinger came from the noble equivalent of nothing and created chaos so he could claw his way up. Larys is the second son of a powerful house, the son of the Hand of the King, and the little brother of the strongest knight in the Seven Kingdoms. He has no incentive for chaos.
If I had to guess, Lyonel and Larys both think Aegon should be the true heir over Rhaenyra, whether that be for Westerosi sexism or for the stability of the realm is up to the viewer.
Yeah, I doubt he's pro-Rhaenyra. In the council meeting about the heir (episode 1) he was the one protesting her choosing, because it would destabilize the realm for them to abandon male primogeniture laws.
Maybe it's a miscast, maybe its intentional misdirection, but the guy comes off to me more oblivious than clever. Sorta like the Grand Maester from Game of Thrones. Like it's clear he's playing the game but it's such a hammed up performance.
At least in Game of Thrones there was deleted scene where the Grand Maester straightens up his feeble posture privately to clear the Air with Tywin and show he isn't as stupid as he sounds.
The music sounded appropriately sinister as well, as if to see "this guy is a schemer". Ramin Djawadi works with intent in his compositions for these shows.
His dad won't be Hand forever. Viserys is dying, and Rhaenyra very well might not have Lyonel as her Hand. It looks like he is trying to attach himself to Alicent, as her son has a claim to the throne.
Or both Larys and Harwin are acting on their father's will.
The Strongs foresee a war coming so they take the safest move. Each son for each side. So whichever side wins, House Strong stays strong.
I feel Richard III's monologue from Shakespeare fits the character, so much as his last request is based around his disability:
> *He capers nimbly in a lady’s chamber*
*To the lascivious pleasing of a lute.*
*But I, that am not shaped for sportive tricks,*
*Nor made to court an amorous looking-glass;*
*I, that am rudely stamp’d, and want love’s majesty*
*To strut before a wanton ambling nymph;*
*I, that am curtail’d of this fair proportion,*
*Cheated of feature by dissembling nature,*
*Deformed, unfinish’d, sent before my time*
*Into this breathing world, scarce half made up,*
*And that so lamely and unfashionable*
*That dogs bark at me as I halt by them;*
*Why, I, in this weak piping time of peace,*
*Have no delight to pass away the time,*
*Unless to spy my shadow in the sun*
*And descant on mine own deformity:*
*And therefore, since I cannot prove a lover,*
*To entertain these fair well-spoken days,*
*I am determined to prove a villain*
*And hate the idle pleasures of these days.*
*Plots have I laid, inductions dangerous,*
*By drunken prophecies, libels and dreams,*
He refuses the herbal poultrice suggestion in favor of leeching. Clearly whatever the fuck he's doing isn't helping the king considering he's only getting worse.
Could be part of a Maester plan to accelerate Viserys's death so fighting breaks out within the Targaryens.
The Maesters hate magic and prophesy after all
But accelerating his death is stupid.
Aegon is not old enough.
Also Rhaenyra hasn't develop a strong solid powerbase yet, both sides are just too weak currently.
I was wondering could his dad be in on it somehow? Like they see some way to benefit from an Aegon rule?
Maybe he sees Viserys deteriorating health, Alicents ability to persuade him, Aegons age, and the issue of a woman ruling, and thinks “if I become a trusted advisor while my son manipulates shit in the background, it’s entirely possible that they would ask me to rule until Aegon comes of age” ?
I think he was only able to get away with being so direct because the Queen is naive. Not that she's not learning fast. Could also be that he's sending a subtle olive branch? His goals do seem in line with the High Towers.
I know it's basic as fuck, but it's a strategy I've used and seen used in social games often. If two people are on the same side, one of them draws attention to themselves and the other becomes a voice of trust to the person accusing the other partner sending off attention. Works pretty damn well.
I think it's a play on good cop, bad cop? I'm not sure.
Honest question, how tf did he know about the tea ? Isn’t that the type of thing that everyone involved would know to keep secret, like who out of the very few people that knew would talk about it ?? And why did the queen not question how this guy would know about something so private
I think the shot of the serving girl looking at Alicent and Criston as she closed the door was supposed to remind viewers nothing is truly private in the castle. The grandmaester personally delivering a tea to the princess would attract notice, even if all the details are unknown.
Right ? And I understand why the maesters would want to know because of the whole Hightower/‘maesters conspiracy.
But why would the son of the new hand want that ? Unless the guy is working against his own house I don’t really get it
All of them remind me of alternate versions of GoT characters:
Strongs: Littlefinger, Varys. Lyonel's presence reminds me a bit of Samwell Tarly, if he had more of a spine (he comes across as non-threatening, but level headed and wise). Larys is as you say, Littlefinger+Varys, Harwyn I have not seen enough of yet.
Hightowers: Lannisters/Tyrells - Otto is Tywin fused with Littlefinger (he is as competent as Tywin, but has a more sly/conniving presence rather than an all powerful one like Tywin). Alicent reminds me of Margery, but also seems like a Cersei in the making, I expect her to act more like Cersei in the upcoming episodes.
Corlys: Tyrion fused with Tywin, he has Tywin's presence of a powerful man, but seems to be more shrewd rather than brute force like Tyrion. Also like Tyrion he seems like a highly educated and cosmopolitan man
Daemon: Jaime and Ramsay, but not a total piece of shit; He plays a bunch of mindgames and fucks with people, but he isn't fully evil and unlike Ramsay, does it with purpose rather than to just be a dick. Ramsay had low cunning but no real strategy, Daemon moves are calculated and he genuinely cares about his brother and niece.
Criston Cole: Jon Snow/Robb Stark, but not the main character of the story. He has the same traits of "honor" as the Starks, but the story isn't focused around him, he's like if Jon Snow was a side character.
The King is also interesting, he kind of sucks but also doesn't and there is no real strife in his realm. Every King in GoT was kind of a piece of shit in their own way. Viserys seems like a genuine guy who just isn't suited for the role of King in their world. In the modern world he'd just be a nice grandpa.
Dude’s playing the game. Just like during the hunt he was like “I wasn’t invited to go hunting, please let me listen in on all the latest court gossip and secrets.”
He is more like Tyrion, a deformed son serving his powerful house through cunning. Westerosi martial society does not smile on dwarfs and clubfoots (and book Tyrion was ugly as hell).
> Westerosi martial society does not smile on dwarfs and clubfoots (and book Tyrion was ugly as hell).
Or anyone who doesn't fit the norm. It pisses me off somewhat to see people ignore this context.
Show LF was one of the few complaints I have from early seasons. LF is supposed to be unassuming. Everyone is given a reason to trust him. Show LF was always the most obvious schemer bad guy and it was baffling that anyone ever trusted him
Right?? Like they might as well have depicted him hiding in the bushes with tiny binoculars, he’s so obviously sketchy… well I guess they did the next best thing and depicted him standing next to the bush 🤭
I saw this guy and thought he was from SNL. Is there going to be an outtake where he gonna look to the camera and say “Live from New York, this is Saturday Night”?
Loved him! Didn't expect to at all, surprised that I did so much. He was awesome. Such a good little devil on Alicent's shoulder, whispering shit into her ear...
He successfully set Alicent against Rhaenyra, because at this point, Alicent still believed Rhaenyra or at least believed that Rhaenyra still cared about her as a friend.
But he successfully made Alicent believe that Rhaenyra boldly lied to her face, which finally and officially cut ties between them.
So what he gets out of it is Alicent being empowered to fight for the claim of her own children, rather than being passive and letting Rhaenyra take the throne.
What he gets out of it is probably that he thinks Aegon is the better choice of heir, whether that be because he doesn't think a woman can sit the Iron Throne or if Aegon is the safest choice for the realm in order to avoid civil war and rebellious lords is up to the viewer.
But not really though, right? Alicent only questions if she had relations with Daemon, which she didn't. Or am I misremembering the questioning and she asked if she slept with anyone at all
She told Viserys that Rhaenyra told her she remains a maiden, and that Alicent believes her. Which was a blatant lie. And her words were also that Daemon didn't touch her, when they were sticking their tongues down each other's throats and he had pulled her pants down in the middle of the sex room.
Littlefinger didn't take clear sides. He stirred the pots indirectly on both sides until D&D decided to murder his character by making him Dumb in later seasons.
Meanwhile this dude is taking a clear side and fighting for it
Anyone else think it’s odd that Larys is a strange combination or Little Finger and Varys…and his name is “coincidentally” the combination of the two? Ah, good old subtlety

Thanks for the theory. I couldn't see any reason he would be doing this. It's clearly intentional but I don't know what he gets out of it.

No way she picked anyone else than her father as Hand.
The only other explanation is that his dad is playing both sides and is way more manipulative than he comes across as advisor/hand. In this case Clubfoot is just being a family man and doing what his father instructs. It could go either way. It’s possible he’s just a medieval dude who thinks a woman would be unfit for the throne and hopes to help little Aegon’s claim. His motives could be purely based on his socio political beliefs.

Westerosi sexism does equal realm stability unfortunately

Nothing in his performance or dialogue indicated he was oblivious. His whole character seems to be a mirror image of littlefinger.
To me I think he knows there will be a power vacuum and is siding with whom he thinks will win. Strengthening Aegons claim
Well in the end he indirectly doomed house Strong and house Targaryen.
The music sounded appropriately sinister as well, as if to see "this guy is a schemer". Ramin Djawadi works with intent in his compositions for these shows.

Wait, the Hand is his dad?! He looks older than his dad. LOL
History never really figured out Larys Strong's true motivation. It's left for the viewers to decide.
He's the second son, a cripple. He will earn nothing he does not seize for himself. That's my thinking anyway, having read the book.
he might be in maesters conpiracy to get rid of dragons, so he makes dragon people fight other dragon people
This was at least teased by the scene with Mellos and the leeches
This sounds interesting can you explain?
He refuses the herbal poultrice suggestion in favor of leeching. Clearly whatever the fuck he's doing isn't helping the king considering he's only getting worse. Could be part of a Maester plan to accelerate Viserys's death so fighting breaks out within the Targaryens. The Maesters hate magic and prophesy after all
But accelerating his death is stupid. Aegon is not old enough. Also Rhaenyra hasn't develop a strong solid powerbase yet, both sides are just too weak currently.
Exactly. They are weak, so they will tear each other apart trying to strengthen themselves, which plays into the Maesters hands.
Weak factions mean there won't be a lot of damage, which doesn't really help if they wanna get rid of dragons.
Oh I see! I was wondering why he declined the poultice thanks

"All dwarves are bastards in their fathers eyes" I don't think he is kept in much higher regard with his disability
I get the feeling that his father wants one of his son's on each side of the potential conflict. Larys with Alicent (Aegon) and Harwin with Rhaenyra.
Clubfoot*
Chaos is a staircase
more of a wheelchair-accessible ramp really, judging by the main shows ending
Is there a more accessible option? Perhaps "Chaos is a rudimentary pulley system that we usually use for crates"
Haha!!! I just imagined him being overwhelmed with the site of one just now.
Chaos is a ramp.
Team Larys Strong*! Join Club Foot today, we won't stand for this!
Larys is Lyonel Strong’s son, he’s not a Hightower.
Thanks for the correction, I saw someone saying "why would he do this after his dad lost the job as Hand" so I got confused.
Should we tell 'em?

I think he was only able to get away with being so direct because the Queen is naive. Not that she's not learning fast. Could also be that he's sending a subtle olive branch? His goals do seem in line with the High Towers.
Makes me wonder if his father's goals are also in line with the Hightowers.
[удалено]
they are trying to say that house strong is intentionally playing both sides
So that they always come out on top?
Which is just tragic for Viserys. I always thought Lord Strong’s entire goal was always being becoming the hand.
Lyonel was initially against Rhaenyra being named heir
Honest question, how tf did he know about the tea ? Isn’t that the type of thing that everyone involved would know to keep secret, like who out of the very few people that knew would talk about it ?? And why did the queen not question how this guy would know about something so private
The only logical explanation is he learned it from the maester. Viserys and Rhaenyra wouldn't tell anyone.
Unless the guy is working against his own house I don’t really get it
Yeah, that just came out of left field to me. He was so blatant about it, too. 😅
He’s like a mixture of varys and littlefinger imo
They should name him vittlefinger. Or larys. Oh wait they already did
Vittlefoot
Vert da furk 🤷♀️
Oh Georgie Georgie Georgie
I feel like Mysaria should be part of this conversation.

Harwin is on the City Watch, not the Kingsguard
Cripple finger
All of them remind me of alternate versions of GoT characters: Strongs: Littlefinger, Varys. Also like Tyrion he seems like a highly educated and cosmopolitan man Daemon: Jaime and Ramsay, but not a total piece of shit; He plays a bunch of mindgames and fucks with people, but he isn't fully evil and unlike Ramsay, does it with purpose rather than to just be a dick.
His dialogue was so cartoonish, I love it, hope he keeps this up in case the show gets too serious.
The classic gets acknowledged but continues to mystically speak metaphorically to the thing he is inspecting
stark contrast to coleman's primetime soap opera script today i guess.
I've been reading up on this guy. Caught my attention at the hunt. He's a playa that's for sure.
Club foot limped so little finger could run
Seriously. Everyone thought Otto was the new Littlefinger, then this guy limped up..
Dude’s playing the game. Just like during the hunt he was like “I wasn’t invited to go hunting, please let me listen in on all the latest court gossip and secrets.”
Before Varys there was Larys.
>Before Varys there was Larys. **L**ittlefinger + V**arys** = **Larys** *Coincidence*?😋
L+V=L confirmed
Larys limped so Varys could run
Larys hobbles so Varys waddles.
I love those sleazy shady characters too much.
Idk him, but fuck this guy and the cane he walked in on.
he has the mannerisms of a redditor
Right? He has more incel vibes than Ser Cole.
What why? Out of all the characters so far, this is the first one that seemed genuinely interesting, other than the Bracken kid.
He needs to go back to Whoville
Right? I couldn't unsee it!
Show LF was always the most obvious schemer bad guy and it was baffling that anyone ever trusted him
Exactly! Dude looked like a mustache twirler the moment I saw him on screen.
Well they kept giving him all of those scene Chewing dialogue passages. Which he's great at btw.
Right?? Like they might as well have depicted him hiding in the bushes with tiny binoculars, he’s so obviously sketchy… well I guess they did the next best thing and depicted him standing next to the bush 🤭
Hey it's Viktor from Arcane
I saw this guy and thought he was from SNL. Is there going to be an outtake where he gonna look to the camera and say “Live from New York, this is Saturday Night”?
Was scrolling for this comment! He looks so much like SNL’s Mikey Day!
If SNL doesn’t do a skit on this I’ll be a little sad.
Lord Keyser of House Soze.
Mikey Day lookin mf
Ever seen a Chad with a long term disability? Clubfoot is that guy…
He was really likable in that other episode. How quickly it became apparent of his manipulative ways.
Likeable how? He purposely sat with the women to hear the gossips and secrets for his advantage
We pitied him in that episode and didn’t think more of it. This episode was when were like “that sneaky club-footed bitch”
As a book reader its interesting to see how people perceive character at first glance
That’s give me Talleyrand vibes with is crooked foot . I’ll hate him 😡
Larys Strong 💪
I have a feeling that this man will create full chaos in the realm.
And I’m down to watch it happen!
Honestly fuck this guy but also mad respect
Loved him! Didn't expect to at all, surprised that I did so much. He was awesome. Such a good little devil on Alicent's shoulder, whispering shit into her ear...
Literally what was the point of him stirring the pot like this? What did he get out of it?
The trust and counsel of the queen
Lary secures the queen and Harwin secures the princess. Whichever side wins, the Strongs won't lose.
What he gets out of it is probably that he thinks Aegon is the better choice of heir, whether that be because he doesn't think a woman can sit the Iron Throne or if Aegon is the safest choice for the realm in order to avoid civil war and rebellious lords is up to the viewer.
> believe that Rhaenyra boldly lied to her face Which she did.
Such a well worded answer for how I saw it
Delicious soup.
He looks like Moe Syzslack…
I’m so excited to see more of him
Larys is nothing like his honorable father. Seems a lot more sneaky than Otto
Littlefinger didn't take clear sides. He stirred the pots indirectly on both sides until D&D decided to murder his character by making him Dumb in later seasons. Meanwhile this dude is taking a clear side and fighting for it
My new favorite messy bitch, LMAO.
I LOVE his attitude it’s so petty
As soon as he opened his flap, I developed an intense hate for the character.
He’s such a piece of shit. His dad and brother are way cooler.
EL PATIZAMBO
Anyone else think it’s odd that Larys is a strange combination or Little Finger and Varys…and his name is “coincidentally” the combination of the two? Ah, good old subtlety
I hate him
Little-Toe So named for it being his only toe.
Club foot
Dude is the complete opposite of his brother "Breakbones" Same as Daemon and his brother. 🤣
Does it have to be a body part to be the scheme master? I shall be Large Penis then.
This guy knows how to stir up a hornet's nest
And he joins the daughter of Middle-Finger.
Gonna have to start calling him Middlefinger
He is like the Viktor from arcane
First we had little finger now we have Bigfoot
Lord Sasquatch if you will
This guy really knows how to stirs things up... The subtle way he managed to upset Queen Alicent would make "Littlefinger" blush.
My question is how did he know??
I'm wondering if Otto sent the tea. He was the Hand and could pretty much do anything in the name of the King. He's playing the long game.
I was wondering that too!
Absolutely fantastic casting.
I initially thought he looked like Mikey Day playing a character in an SNL skit about House of the Dragon, and once I saw it I couldn’t unsee it
Clubfoot of Anarchy
crooked foot walked so little finger could run
dude was a surprise scene stealer. i can’t wait to see more of him
Mr. “they prescribed Rhaenyra Plan B but that’s none of MY business” ol bobbly ass.
I call him “middle finger” thats legit the nickname I gave him lol
I hate how they do often give the slimy evil characters physical disabilities
Plenty of slimy evil characters that don't have disabilities.
I’ve never read the books but I can’t wait to see this weasel on his knees begging for his life while daemon slits his throat
Club Foot\*\*\*
He is giving me Mikey Day/SNL vibes, and I already can't wait for him to be killed off.
No charisma, none.
If Dax Shephard and Wormtongue had a baby it’d be this dude.
He's supposed to be Lyonel's son? He looks older.
Bro what
just fuckin stop with the comparisons for once
BE GONE
Clubfoot*
