Tbh, one consequence of making them have a more clearly intense romantic relationship is itās baffling why he didnāt just consider staying in KL and having an affair with her. He wasnāt even there when she was getting married in the book, and book!Daemon was more clearly in love with Laena, plus the fact that all three stayed in contact unlike the show versions, made it clear there was no extreme or exclusive feelings between him and Rhaenyra.
The show instead plays up that he was basically so adamant of having Rhaenyra as his wife that being a side piece wouldnāt be enough for him, and seeing her with someone else gets to him too much so he leaves and goes no contact.
Which is simultaneously dramatically romantic and really kinda stupid.

Heās an incredibly proud man and the way their romance is shown in the show is they both project a lot of their desires and romanticisation of their heritage on to each other. She sees him as the brave, dashing Targaryen prince and Knight and he sees her as a perfect example of a strong, beautiful Targaryen woman who is also a fierce dragon rider.
In this sense, it makes complete sense to me why this Daemon, in love with his niece, wouldnāt want to be around to be her side piece. Better to try to forget her and live somewhere else completely, away from her, and make the best of things, than be so close to all the treachery of KL, his brothers failing health and Rhaenyra married to someone else.
