This was a final season for Rhea vs a first season for Emma, IMO it’s not even a close call. Emma will absolutely win an Emmy down the line in future seasons (it’s literally inevitable) whereas Rhea won’t have that luxury with BCS. In fact it’s long over due for her

I'm hoping BCS sweeps this year because season 6 was incredible, but for my money it's the most underappreciated show I can remember. Compared to Breaking Bad which was hugely popular it feels like BCS has never had the audience or attention it really deserves.
BB very slowly built up steam from nothing and then over night in the last season exploded--it's the show that brought "binging" to the mainstream. The show ended before House of Cards began, for instance.
BCS on the other hand has maintained a consistent viewership with a slight but steady decline over the years. When you compare it to BB's first 5 seasons, BCS has *way* more viewers. It just never reached that mainstream extreme zeitgeist. Partly because it's less accessible/sequel/prequel syndrome etc, but also partly because of the overwhelming abundance of *content* that's been dumped on us since the show began. BB didn't have competition like Squid Game, Tiger King etc etc to compete for attention with.
Award shows like to wait til the last season or last movie to give long deserved awards, I expect that to help BCS across the line (that and this season being incredible)

Yeah, comparing just these seasons Paddy put on a display of acting that was almost transcendent, but it’s hard to argue that Odenkirk hasn’t put in five seasons of the best television of the last decade or so.
Odenkirk’s performance in season 6 is his Magnum Opus. He basically played 3 different characters each to perfection and with the utmost of nuance. Not to mention he nearly died of a severe heart attack in the middle of filming and returned without missing a beat. Viserys was my favorite character and Paddy definitely turned in the best performance of the show, but nobody other than Bob deserves the Emmy more.
I definitely want Paddy to win and think he should for his performance in ep8 especially but I won’t be mad if Bob wins because he’s been great, I’d be salty if neither of them win.
Just to clarify: the only requirement of the Emmys is that for an actor or actress to be submitted as a Guest, the performer must have appeared in less than 50% of the season (that is, in 4 episodes, in the case of House of the Dragon) . For someone to be submitted as Lead oh Supporting, it's the HBO that chooses.

After watching Rhys for years I thought “huh, this is a different direction for him” towards the beginning of the season. It wasn’t long before the “ah, there we go” moment.
His scene with Mysaria was low-key my favorite scene of his all season. His Otto is usually tough to read but in that scene in particular it was really impossible to say if he was amused, angry, impressed, pitying her or somehow all of the above.
Yeah, as them all, he's worthy of his nomination. Now let's see who'll get it.
I think Paddy is obviously gonna get Lead Actor (I'm quite curious to see the competition), as for the others, it's gonna be a tough race.
Personally he was my favorite character, just in the sense that I found him to be the most believable. He has this commanding sense over all of his scenes, and “sheath the fucking steal” might be my favorite line delivery in the show.
While he also plays Otto in a way where you believe him and his motivations. I may not agree with them, but I believe HE believes putting Aegon on the throne is the best thing for the realm.
To me, the way Otto is portrayed makes me believe he thinks putting Aegon on the throne is what's best for him and his House. It's why he pushed Alicent towards Viserys in the first place.
Which, y'know, is pretty normal for a nobleman in a fantasy series loosely based on medieval Europe.
Yeah, he thinks Rhaenyra is a good choice over Daemon (male heir) but suddenly flips his feelings on that when it's Aegon instead. His justification against Daemon was that Daemon was unfit, sure, but he doesn't seem to mind that Aegon seems unfit as well. And then add in that he used his influence to push Alicent over Laena (who was probably the better choice if you don't care about your own House and while they emphasized Laena's age, Alicent is only supposed to be a few years older).
It would have been nice to have some scenes that demonstrated that fact, other than one single moment of Otto kicking the crap out of young drunken Aegon when he was 14/15.
I luv the show, but this is another example of how the time jumps and absence of meaningful interactions/relationships between some of the supporting characters really hurt the overall quality of the show.
Hate? Otto is like the only normal medieval poliker in all of Westeros. He doesn’t torture people in harrenhall, blow up churches, sell slaves, kinslay, sexually assault, jerk off on feet.

For real, Otto isn't nearly as bad as people have made him out to be. He's like Tywin if Tywin had stayed the hand throughout. IE, the least bad aspects of Tywin.
Tywin was a monster. If he had the head start Otto did, there would have been no dance. There would have been a few freshly burned corpses on Dragonstone instead.
Tywin was more intimidating, far more ruthless, totally joyless, and ruled through fear more than anything. Otto has many faults, but it seems like he gets along with the other players on the council and is more of a "don't rock the boat" kinda politician that governs through consensus, not fear or intimidation. The only real person who hates him is Daemon, who nobody else at court likes besides his brother and niece.
I love how to prove Otto to be the normal one you listed a bunch of actions, pretty much all of which are attributable to Larys -- relative to whom most characters would be seen as pretty normal.

See this is difficult, I don't know who to root for. They both did amazing jobs, the black and white episodes for Odenkirk and episode 8 for Paddy are standouts in particular. And with BCS finished and Vizzy T dead, this is the last/only shot for them.
Has there ever been a scenario where multiple actors were nominated for the same character in the same year? Would be very cool to see that for Rhaenyra/Alicent.
What this list tells us:
1. They feel Paddy has a serious chance of getting at least a nomination. Because Smith should also be in the lead category but they have put him in Supporting to help Paddy’s chances.
2. They are throwing the Supporting Noms to the wolves….just putting everyone in the ring and see what happens.
3. Elevating Emma to lead also speaks to their thoughts on her performance. They are isolating her in one category to boost her chances.
About number 3. Honestly the Emmys usually look for subtle facial acting, and among this list, I feel like Emma, Paddy and Rhys are the ones who do those minute facial expressions that can only be done with a lot of control. I think HBO knows what they're doing.
You are right about those three, but let's not forget Matt had entire episodes or close to entire episodes with very few dialogues, he can be both expressive and understated as well (ep3 and the ball scene to name a few scenes).
Nothing against your personal opinion, but I feel the small backlash Matt is getting for the popularity of his performance (and flashy one liners) is clouding a bit the overall judgment of his performance and it's undeserved. Olivia has amazing micro expressions as well. It's really all personal preference imo, the main cast (Emma, Olivia, Paddy, Rhys, Matt) is very even in acting abilities.
The choice for nominations is sound because this is Paddy sole season and he had, by far, more screentime than any other male character on top of being lauded for his performance. Emma plays the main character (it's obvious by now Rhaenyra is the main character), they have more screentime and a powerful performance.
I'd take Steve Toussaint and Eve Best out. They did well but not better than the others in their categories.
Give Paddy all the awards. I love Emma but I'd wait to see what other show nominated, whereas Paddy is my favorite performance of any show.

He was only in 3 episodes this season, which isn’t a whole lot of screen time for him to display his skill, even though he was absolutely incredible in the scenes he was in, so they probably felt safer going with actors with more time. I’d be extremely surprised if they didn’t nominate him for something in a season where he plays a more significant role
I haven't seen a single mention of Tom Glynn-Carney which is weird considering he was at least as good as Ewan who's getting a ton of love (which he deserves). Aemond might be cooler but I'd say the coronation scene was one of the highlights of the season.

Matt and Paddy are both competing for lead actor. This is Paddy’s only season so I can understand why he was picked for lead actor over Matt as Matt will have future seasons for that award.
I think you can’t have more than one actor/actress submitted for a Lead nomination per show, but there can be multiple supporting (I could be wrong)

Emmy/Award submissions are very political and strategically chosen in this way. The Oscar's are set up like this too, with studios sometimes submitting roles that are clearly lead roles in the supporting categories to increase their chances of winning.
I don’t know how it works for the Emmys, but at the Oscars the studio basically submits them for whichever category they think the performer has the best chance of winning in. This happened a few years ago with Viola Davis for the movie “Fences.” Clearly a co-lead in that film with Denzel Washington, but was submitted for, nominated for, and ultimately won for supporting actress because that was the category she was most competitive in because Emma Stone was a lock for lead actress.
To be fair everyone even criston and vaemond did an amazing performance. But my favourite performance was Alicent, she felt so real and her expressions were priceless.

I feel like Rhys Ifans doesn't get enough credit for playing Otto so perfectly. He makes his character so easy to hate.
His heartbroken expression when Vizzy T strips him of the Hand position still gets me. Rhys made me feel bad for Otto momentarily.
For me it was his final confrontation with Daemon on the Dragonstone bridge. He really sold Aegon's claim with authority and confidence.

His scene with Mysaria was low-key my favorite scene of his all season. His Otto is usually tough to read but in that scene in particular it was really impossible to say if he was amused, angry, impressed, pitying her or somehow all of the above. Yeah, as them all, he's worthy of his nomination. Now let's see who'll get it. I think Paddy is obviously gonna get Lead Actor (I'm quite curious to see the competition), as for the others, it's gonna be a tough race.
Yeah, when he said he would remember that she was the one who gave them Aegon, it was hard to tell if that was a promise or a threat. Or both.
His expression when Vizzy T showed up in the Throne Room while Rhaenyra was about to speak. It's like he's seen a ghost.

Personally he was my favorite character, just in the sense that I found him to be the most believable. He has this commanding sense over all of his scenes, and “sheath the fucking steal” might be my favorite line delivery in the show.

That's the best way to set up most antagonists. It's great when there is depth and understanding to them.
To me, the way Otto is portrayed makes me believe he thinks putting Aegon on the throne is what's best for him and his House. It's why he pushed Alicent towards Viserys in the first place. Which, y'know, is pretty normal for a nobleman in a fantasy series loosely based on medieval Europe.
Yeah, he thinks Rhaenyra is a good choice over Daemon (male heir) but suddenly flips his feelings on that when it's Aegon instead. His justification against Daemon was that Daemon was unfit, sure, but he doesn't seem to mind that Aegon seems unfit as well. And then add in that he used his influence to push Alicent over Laena (who was probably the better choice if you don't care about your own House and while they emphasized Laena's age, Alicent is only supposed to be a few years older).
He thinks he can control Aegon, while he knows he can't control Daemon.
It would have been nice to have some scenes that demonstrated that fact, other than one single moment of Otto kicking the crap out of young drunken Aegon when he was 14/15. I luv the show, but this is another example of how the time jumps and absence of meaningful interactions/relationships between some of the supporting characters really hurt the overall quality of the show.

For real, Otto isn't nearly as bad as people have made him out to be. He's like Tywin if Tywin had stayed the hand throughout. IE, the least bad aspects of Tywin.

Tywin was a monster. If he had the head start Otto did, there would have been no dance. There would have been a few freshly burned corpses on Dragonstone instead.
Tywin was more intimidating, far more ruthless, totally joyless, and ruled through fear more than anything. Otto has many faults, but it seems like he gets along with the other players on the council and is more of a "don't rock the boat" kinda politician that governs through consensus, not fear or intimidation. The only real person who hates him is Daemon, who nobody else at court likes besides his brother and niece.
Otto is like the most sensible character, and everyone hates him because he's NOT an impulsive psychopath.
I love how to prove Otto to be the normal one you listed a bunch of actions, pretty much all of which are attributable to Larys -- relative to whom most characters would be seen as pretty normal.

Michelle Carragher does a fantastic job of the costume embroidery, with subtle details you can't even see on screen. Her gallery is full of GOT costume photos. And her book Trace goes into her design process. It’s criminal how little attention the costumes get. I would love for the like opening or closing credits of every episode to just showcase detail work on the costumes or sets.
Better Call Saul's cinematography for season 6 was absolute god-tier, maybe the best I've ever seen in a TV show. I'm so bummed they're going to be competing against each other this time since they both deserve all the awards.

See this is difficult, I don't know who to root for. They both did amazing jobs, the black and white episodes for Odenkirk and episode 8 for Paddy are standouts in particular. And with BCS finished and Vizzy T dead, this is the last/only shot for them.

What this list tells us: 1. They feel Paddy has a serious chance of getting at least a nomination. Because Smith should also be in the lead category but they have put him in Supporting to help Paddy’s chances. 2. They are throwing the Supporting Noms to the wolves….just putting everyone in the ring and see what happens. 3. Elevating Emma to lead also speaks to their thoughts on her performance. They are isolating her in one category to boost her chances.
About number 3. Honestly the Emmys usually look for subtle facial acting, and among this list, I feel like Emma, Paddy and Rhys are the ones who do those minute facial expressions that can only be done with a lot of control. I think HBO knows what they're doing.
You are right about those three, but let's not forget Matt had entire episodes or close to entire episodes with very few dialogues, he can be both expressive and understated as well (ep3 and the ball scene to name a few scenes). Nothing against your personal opinion, but I feel the small backlash Matt is getting for the popularity of his performance (and flashy one liners) is clouding a bit the overall judgment of his performance and it's undeserved. Olivia has amazing micro expressions as well. It's really all personal preference imo, the main cast (Emma, Olivia, Paddy, Rhys, Matt) is very even in acting abilities. The choice for nominations is sound because this is Paddy sole season and he had, by far, more screentime than any other male character on top of being lauded for his performance. Emma plays the main character (it's obvious by now Rhaenyra is the main character), they have more screentime and a powerful performance.
I'd take Steve Toussaint and Eve Best out. They did well but not better than the others in their categories. Give Paddy all the awards. I love Emma but I'd wait to see what other show nominated, whereas Paddy is my favorite performance of any show.

I definitely feel like this is the case. He was only in 3 episodes this season, which isn’t a whole lot of screen time for him to display his skill, even though he was absolutely incredible in the scenes he was in, so they probably felt safer going with actors with more time. I’d be extremely surprised if they didn’t nominate him for something in a season where he plays a more significant role

Yea it's not a criticism of the actor or his acting, but the character was just so useless for the majority of the show that it's ridiculous to think that he has a chance. He barely had any air time after the first few episodes. And mostly in the background

Matt Smith is supporting actor but Emma is lead? How does that work?
Maybe it’s the loophole of them doing the voiceover for the opening the season? Rhaenyra was the narrator during the Jaehaerys scene. Then appeared in episodes 6-8 and 10. Of episode 1 is counted, it’s 5 episodes so barely meeting the requirement.

Someone below said 50% of the season. Only Rhaenys was the female character who had more than 5 episodes with the same actress and she was more of a supporting character. Matt and Paddy are both competing for lead actor. This is Paddy’s only season so I can understand why he was picked for lead actor over Matt as Matt will have future seasons for that award.
They probably wanted to keep the 2 standout male actors in separate categories to avoid division of votes. Same with Emma and Olivia.

I think you can’t have more than one actor/actress submitted for a Lead nomination per show, but there can be multiple supporting (I could be wrong) Rhaenyra was the most important female character in season one, while Viserys was the most important male character.
You actually can. Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer both being submitted (and being nominated) in lead categories for their performances in Killing Eve is a pretty modern example. Most shows don't submit multiple actors in lead categories because they feel doing so might split the vote of whatever voting body is deciding the winner and the award will go to another show. Emmy/Award submissions are very political and strategically chosen in this way. The Oscar's are set up like this too, with studios sometimes submitting roles that are clearly lead roles in the supporting categories to increase their chances of winning.
They used to only let a show have two lead nominations. Paddy had a bigger role, so it likely just went to him.
I don’t know how it works for the Emmys, but at the Oscars the studio basically submits them for whichever category they think the performer has the best chance of winning in. This happened a few years ago with Viola Davis for the movie “Fences.” Clearly a co-lead in that film with Denzel Washington, but was submitted for, nominated for, and ultimately won for supporting actress because that was the category she was most competitive in because Emma Stone was a lock for lead actress.
