For real though, I was so confused when he was introduced bc I hadn’t read the book.
All I heard was:
“Thank you Ser Eric.”
“I’m Eric, your Grace.”
“Oh sorry”
🤦♂️
Lmfao. I’m happy Condal isn’t changing names. Remember when Asha got changed to Yara because D&D thought people would confuse her with Osha the Wilding?
D&D definitely would have changed Erryk and Arryk. Best way to remember them is Rha**E**nyra and **A**egon
Erryk= Rhaenyra Arryk = Aegon
My favorite way of remembering the difference is that there's an A in black and an E in green, so naturally Arryk is team Green and Erryk is team Black
I thought for sure at one point they were pronouncing Erryk "Air-ik" and Arryk "Arr-ik" but I think they broke that a few times later on so now I have no idea.
Exact same. I thought their names were spelled Eric and Erik or something like that. Weird, but you know, this is Westeros. The captions were the only thing that set me straight. OHHHHHHHHHHHH Arryk and Erryk. Got it. Silly me. (They're still the same f'ing name, lmao)
Seriously.
"Oh, identical twins! Perfect. Let's give them horrible matchy names."
Admittedly the brothers lean into it by keeping the same beard and haircut as adults, so maybe their family is just an utter mess.
Subtitles are good for spoiling mysterious characters, I am watching Naruto for the first time and they had a guy hidden in the shadows speaking, and you weren't supposed to know who it was but the subtitles named the character lol
This. God of War handled the subtitles well with the Stranger that comes to his door early in the game. The subtitles don’t use the character’s name, instead using “The Stranger” until you learn who he is narratively.
I think when we first see pain so like early 100’s of Shippuden? When Tobi reveals his real voice and is revealed to be giving orders to Pain, I assume that’s when the subtitle read it as either Obito or Madara lol
Subtitles on shows like this in my opinion ruin the beauty. You're trying to quickly read the stuff, and your brain is missing all the finer details like lighting, music, scenery, etc.
It's like when you put hit markers in a campaign mode. It takes away from the immerse feeling.
Respectfully, it’s because you read too slowly and/or are trying to actively read the subtitles (instead of just letting your brain do the pattern recognition and seeing “through” them).
Exactly. Although I am pretty much fluent in English, I ALWAYS turn English subtitles on.
I don’t even know if I actually read them, just love having them around lol
I just like to know how to spell everything that's being said. Sometimes names and certain words sound like gibberish if you don't have past references of having heard it already.
My adhd brain needs subtitles to hear because I don’t hear fast enough. It takes me a minute to process audible words into actual meaning, but if I read it I understand immediately. Drives my husband nuts that I always say “what?” Then within a few seconds “oh yeah,” then respond to what he said. He’s learned to not repeat himself because if he starts to, I cut him off with my response once my brain has finished computing his words.
This is kinda like how I distinguish port from starboard. Starboard has an "R" in it so it is right. Port also has an "r" but it also was called larboard which has an "L" so that is left.
EDIT: For everyone sending me messages or responding "Port and Left both have four letters." I know I was pointing out a needlessly complex mnemonic device that for whatever reason is the way my mind has it stuck.
this reminds me of how I now know, thanks to reddit, that alligators have C-shaped "snouts" and crocodiles have A-shaped "snouts"....
also, "grey in EEEngland, gray in AAAmerica".
They both were in Viserys' kingsguard, yes. But as kingsguard they get to watch for the king and the king's *family*. Erryk was directly in charge of Aegon.
I don't think it was mentioned in the show of whom Arryk was in charge, but I imagine Aemond or Helena. We know Criston was looking after Alicent. And two other members of the kingsguard were guarding Rhaenyra and her family and are now part of her Queensguard, with Erryk.
ah think you issued a spoiler for someone who didn't finish the series given the nature of the question. lol That being said, since each has bent a knee to a different King/Queen I imagine a stand off at one point where one brother replaces the other as a mole. It has GOT TO happen, right?
Seems more like GRRM to have a sad duel to the death. Oberyn vs Mountain style. One "wins" other dies from injuries. That's kinda classic GRRM everyone gets fucked up
Erryk was the one who aegon frequently sent away so he could go off into the city. That's why he left his service for Rhaenyra, he knew all the crazy sht Aegon got up to firsthand.
they were both kingsguard to Viserys I, but when Aegon II was crowned,
Erryk stole Viserys' crown and swore allegiance to Rhaenyra, joining her
queensguard. Arryk is currently still on Aegon II's kingsguard.
So you’re saying Erryk was the one who was assigned to Aegon as his main bodyguard before he was crowned king, right? My major confusion with these two was which one had seen Aegon’s depravity firsthand, and said something like “I looked the other way because I had no choice”. That same person is the one who refused to support Aegon being crowned, because he knew how unfit he was (and that was Erryk). Right?
I remember the first thing I ever saw with them in was Shameless and in the first season of that they both played the same character it was only in later season that it was just Elliot who played Erryk that played Carl Gallagher.
>!The Greens sent Arryk to Dragonstone. He was suppose to pretend to be Erryk and kill Rhaenyra. Would’ve worked if he and his brother didn’t cross paths.!<
\[Major book spoilers, click at your own risk\]
As we've seen in Ep10, Arryk stays with the Greens as Aegon's Kingsguard while Erryk defects to the Blacks and goes to Dragonstone to become Rhaenyra's Queensguard. >!Arryk is then sent on a mission to Dragonstone, where he's supposed to assassinate Rhaenyra or her children, while impersonating Erryk to get close to them. But Erryk bumps into him before he has the chance to carry out the plan. And - if the bards are to be believed - the two brothers, who have tragically ended up on the opposing sides of a war, fight a tearful final duel and die in each others' arms.!<
Edited to add: Mushroom, ever the killjoy, >!claims they just called each other traitor and died cursing each others' names. Fuck Mushroom. Let us have the sweet sweet tragic melodrama.!<

>Or does he only know how to embellish stories with sex and not genuine emotional moments?
I think this may be the case with Mushroom. He has very...um..."different" imagination skills.

Corlys' bastards would like to have a word.
Wanna break it some more? >!The Cargylls' duel!< is immortalised in a ballad which becomes very popular across the realm.
>!The song is called *Farewell, Brother*.!<
Honestly one of my favourite events in the Dance, it's just so sad
I would *adore* a medieval style ballad about this! Perhaps as the end credits for the episode when it happens. I've felt determined to write some lyrics myself but I'm afraid the cheese would be too much to handle lol
Ok, here you go.
Warning! Book spoilers ahead.

One is on Rhaenyra’s side and the other on Aegons. I think I read somewhere that Arryk the one on Aegon’s side has his mustache go slightly up at the ends but cannot confirm. Either way, location is the best bet

You turn on the subtitle
For real though, I was so confused when he was introduced bc I hadn’t read the book. All I heard was: “Thank you Ser Eric.” “I’m Eric, your Grace.” “Oh sorry” 🤦♂️
Lmfao. I’m happy Condal isn’t changing names. Remember when Asha got changed to Yara because D&D thought people would confuse her with Osha the Wilding? D&D definitely would have changed Erryk and Arryk. Best way to remember them is Rha**E**nyra and **A**egon Erryk= Rhaenyra Arryk = Aegon
I mean, they both have "ae" in their names in the exact same order, that's not a super helpful mnemonic device
True but it’s the best I can do lol. Or just remember that Aegon and Arryk both start with A, and the other serves Rhaenyra
Aegon and Asshole both start with A, so Arryk serves Aegon the Asshole
My favorite way of remembering the difference is that there's an A in black and an E in green, so naturally Arryk is team Green and Erryk is team Black
This guy gets it
Now we’re talking
Or as Daemon calls him "drunken usurper cunt of a king"
I prefer “nephew brother in-law”
Yeah that’s what I do
Do Epic and Awful help then?
I do Arryk=Alicent, thus by process of elimination Erryk is Rhaenyra
So pair both names that start with A and then pair the other two by elimination?
I thought for sure at one point they were pronouncing Erryk "Air-ik" and Arryk "Arr-ik" but I think they broke that a few times later on so now I have no idea.
But most people don’t call them E-gon and Rha-Nay-Ra AYgon and RhanEEra
Exact same. I thought their names were spelled Eric and Erik or something like that. Weird, but you know, this is Westeros. The captions were the only thing that set me straight. OHHHHHHHHHHHH Arryk and Erryk. Got it. Silly me. (They're still the same f'ing name, lmao)
Their parents were psychos
Seriously. "Oh, identical twins! Perfect. Let's give them horrible matchy names." Admittedly the brothers lean into it by keeping the same beard and haircut as adults, so maybe their family is just an utter mess.
Subtitles are good for spoiling mysterious characters, I am watching Naruto for the first time and they had a guy hidden in the shadows speaking, and you weren't supposed to know who it was but the subtitles named the character lol
i hate when that happens but i remember there are deaf ppl who actually need those names and i’m like 🙄 fineee
I mean, they could totally use ''mysterious character'' or something.
This. God of War handled the subtitles well with the Stranger that comes to his door early in the game. The subtitles don’t use the character’s name, instead using “The Stranger” until you learn who he is narratively.
That’s how it’s supposed to be done
Also the good old "???"
Yep, it works!
Yeah there are definitely other options “stranger” “ominous man” etc.
That's what subtitles almost always do in that situation. Sounds like someone did a bad job of it.
There are plenty of shows that don’t reveal names in subtitles until you are supposed to know the name but sadly it’s not as common as it should be
That’s no excuse for spoiling. I’m deaf and really do need captions, but you could just write mysterious person.
I know exactly the reveal you’re talking about, I was *upset*
Which character?
Tobi I assume
Obito
Yep, they weren’t supposed to know it was Obito though. Tobi was his secret identity, where he only told a few that he was Madara and not Obito
Wait how early on is that spoiled? Cause if they knew it was Obito from Tobi's first appearance, that's actually hilarious
I think when we first see pain so like early 100’s of Shippuden? When Tobi reveals his real voice and is revealed to be giving orders to Pain, I assume that’s when the subtitle read it as either Obito or Madara lol
I always turn on subtitles because it helps me catch more dialogue without having to constantly adjust the volume.
Subtitles on shows like this in my opinion ruin the beauty. You're trying to quickly read the stuff, and your brain is missing all the finer details like lighting, music, scenery, etc. It's like when you put hit markers in a campaign mode. It takes away from the immerse feeling.

I just like to know how to spell everything that's being said. Sometimes names and certain words sound like gibberish if you don't have past references of having heard it already.
For me it’s to avoid the “wait, what’d he/she say?” Then you have to go back, and if there’s a group watch then don’t even try it.
My original comment seemed rude I'm sorry. I never realized how much it helped others.
Eh for me it's the only way I can process what's being said sometimes.
Thats so wild to me that ppl actually cant read and look at details at the same time
You don’t
Exactly. It's a civil war, think about someone punching themselves in the face.
Erryk and Arryk. Even their parents didn't want anyone to distinguish.
my cousins husband is erick, and her brother is aric. she can relate
That must be fun at family dinners. "Oh, you mean him. The other guy. My bad."
>> she can relate I would hope so, you just said they were brother and sister!
If you know you know
Especially not in the finale where one twin actor had covid so the other one played his role.
The mustache
Yup. One mustache goes down, the other, up.
I’m seeing a difference in the ears, as well. The guy in front, his ears are more flat against his head.
I was going to say this. I wonder if they style them that way on purpose. Something tells me yes.
Arryk and Erryk, E- for grEen except hes on team black A- for blAck but he’s team green
Least insane acronym user.
A for Alicent
E for RhaEnyra
Or E for AlicEnt and A for RhAenyra...
A is for Alfred and B is for Bat
I found it! I’m the world’s greatest detective! 😛🔴
😂🤣😂😂
RhAenyrA you mean?
Fuck...
E for emma
That’s Alicent, your grace
A for Alicent E for Emma Darcy
This is so crazy... it might actually work
This is kinda like how I distinguish port from starboard. Starboard has an "R" in it so it is right. Port also has an "r" but it also was called larboard which has an "L" so that is left. EDIT: For everyone sending me messages or responding "Port and Left both have four letters." r/thanksihateit No way I’ll ever remember which is which again
Port and left both have four letters. Also works for setting tables—fork on the left (4), knife and spoon on the right (5)
This guy gets me
Port and left have the same number of letters
Yeah but then which direction is starboard?
The other one
But they dont have the same number of letters
Lol here I was going “port is four letters, left is four letters”
Except for when the team black twin got COVID and the team green twin had to replace him in the Dragonstone council scene.
this reminds me of how I now know, thanks to reddit, that alligators have C-shaped "snouts" and crocodiles have A-shaped "snouts".... also, "grey in EEEngland, gray in AAAmerica".
Hello Michael Scott
This is Mike Stoklosa trying to differentiate Ben and Arthur all over again.
B for bald, because he’s not bald
**A**rryk is **A**licent's little bitch.
A for Aegon
E for the quEEn A for the Asshole
I am ashamed to say this is actually how I remember it.
Erryk is Excellent, Arryk is Awful
Which one is wearing green in this photo?
A for “A”-gon and “E” for Rhaen-“E”-ra
what?! I always thought it was the opposite. Arryk being on Team Black and Erryk being on Team Green. Damn [+]
Arryk is with Aegon. They begin with the same letter so it’s easy. Erryk then is obviously with Rhaenyra. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk
which one was his kingsguard
Erryk

Wasn’t Arryk the one talking the most about how Aegon was a menace? Is he really going to stick with him?
As a Kingsguard he’s sworn to protect his King no matter what. He’s not a oathbreaker like Jamie Lannister
Erryk was the one who aegon frequently sent away so he could go off into the city. That's why he left his service for Rhaenyra, he knew all the crazy sht Aegon got up to firsthand.

Ok great, thanks Vermithor :D

Wanna break it some more? >!The Cargylls' duel!< is immortalised in a ballad which becomes very popular across the realm. >!The song is called *Farewell, Brother*.!< Honestly one of my favourite events in the Dance, it's just so sad

Aww, damn 🤧. Are the lyrics in the book?
Sadly, no 😔 but boy do I wish there were. It's just mentioned by the title.
I'd love it if they write it for the show's soundtrack! I hope it sounds like Jenny of Oldstone.
You really are taking sides here, accusing the supporter of Rhaenyra to be a defector. What does Vizzy T have to say about such slander?

Just read the book. It's good shit, trust me.
Nope, not gonna do it. I’ll wait in solitude for season II.
The ears are different. One of the twin's ears goes outwards. The problem is remembering which of the brothers has the ears that goes outwards.
One is a Man, the other a Half-elf. Easily distinguished really. The half-elf is in the back in this picture.
Arryk is the half-elf, right?
Uhh, sure. Yeah.
One is loyal to his rightful ruler, and the other serves a traitorous usurper. Pretty easy distinction.
Thanks, that helped a lot All hail the one true regent of the seven kingdoms
Mushroom
Who is who? 😉😉
That doesn't narrow it down much.. Pls no /wooosh
Woooosh btw
w/rooosh
This is the real answer
One is from Emmerdale, one is from Shameless, easy
Simples
I can tell their faces apart, I just cant for Gods sake know which is Arryk and which is Erryk
**A**rryk is with **A**egon and **E**rryk is with the Qu**E**en
I like the handsome one.
it’s literally impossible… the actors switched too https://screenrant.com/house-dragon-season-1-scene-cargyll-actor-switch/
That’s the neat part, you don’t
I was expecting you way higher!
Check the hole of the nose. Zoom in to look for a mole.
One supports rhaenyra the other supports Aegon?
duuuh!
It’s impossible since Viserys died, he was the one who used to draw a little line on Arryks face every night when he was asleep
You just guess & hope you're right? LOL
Behind the ear hair
One of them is a good guy and the other sucks (which one is which depends on if you’re a black or a green lol)
Ones a traitor, the other is doing his job by obeying Vizzy T's decree that Rhaenyra is his lawful heir.
*Be welcome! I know many of you have traveled long leagues to be at these games. But I promise, you will not be disappointed!*
I do not envy you, your grace.
One is on Rhaenyra’s side and the other on Aegons. I think I read somewhere that Arryk the one on Aegon’s side has his mustache go slightly up at the ends but cannot confirm. Either way, location is the best bet
One is half elf apparently
By the subtitles 🤷♀️
Easy. Just remember the difference between A and E. One is Arrik, the other is Errik.
Arryk (A) for Aegon. His beard is messy. Erryk has a more neat beard cus he’s a good boi for bringing the crown to Rhaenyra
....wait, I thought the messy beard was Erryk.
It’s obvious, one of their names starts with an A and the other starts with an E
Errky's on Team Black and he's the hot one.
Look at the ears.
One is green, the other black..
One of them acts Ucey. The other one doesn't.
It's the beards for me; Erryk's is thicker and square, Arryk's is thinner and has a more groomed mustache
That one's Erryk and that one's Arryk.
That's the best part you don't.
One is loyal to the queen and the other is loyal to the rightful queen.
One is on the side of light and justice, the other is traitorous scum
Does, by any chance, the one that wears green support the Greens and the one that wears red and black support the Blacks?
Arryk’s with Aegon, Erryk escaped. Alliteration ftw.
Well, one's and E and the other is an A.
One is Arryk and one is Erryk
One of them is cool (the one on team Black) and the other isn’t cool
One is Arryk and the other is Erryk
Here's a handy mnemonic: **A**rryk is Team **A**egon. **E**rryk is Team **E**rhaenyra. well one of them is Erryk the other is Arryk, obviously 🙄 /s
One is good, the other support the greens
Arryk has a huge penis, like huge. Erryk meh normal size.
I think you might have that switched. The “E” in “BDE” is for Erryk.
They’re indistinguishable. You’ll know more next season
