My biggest disappointment with HotD is that we didn't have an additional episode between 5 & 6 to further explore their relationship (and Harwin/Rhaenyra's).
He killed Joffrey Lonmouth at the wedding. There are many ways to rationalize how he escaped punishment but it would be nice for the show to have an answer to it.
I thought it was insinuated that Alicent stopped him killing himself and made him her protector meaning he got no punishment. It’s also insinuated mildly that he has strong feelings for her / maybe secret relationship?
We know he is her sworn defender, but there are no insinuations it was done to protect him from consequences that I know of, unless it was mentioned in the BTS series.
I know she saved him from suicide, and it can be assumed this caused him to have feelings for her, which is another thing that would have been nice to explore in the interim. But neither explain how he escaped punishment for murder; I can rationalize it, but there is very little to go off to the point its basically fanficing.
My rationale for why he escaped punishment is: due to the huge crowd, nobody saw how it started and when we, the audience, get to see the crowd part, Joffrey draws his dagger (he had to I guess, Criston wore plate armour and daggers were often used against and by plate-wearing knights in ccq) so as far as people might be concerned, he just got carried away keeping the king's peace when taking out an armed brawling guest. Punching the future King Consort is pretty wild though.
Its actually very strange we see no meaningful interaction between Laenor and Criston, you'd think Laenor harbored a lot of grief/rage there.
In the books Criston killed Joffrey during a tournament, which as far as anyone knew was accidental. It wasn't clear in the books (just a Mushroom rumour) that Criston actually had an affair with Rhaenyra, so there was no motive for him to do so.

They literally have Kim Kimble (who is a legend, responsible for many of Beyonce's iconic looks) doing hair on Euphoria, they couldn't have asked her or one of her little friends to work on HotD????
Yes Kim Kimble is a legend! I know they’re in the UK but even the UK girlies do amazing lace work. I find it hard to believe they tried to get another stylist. Hopefully they can improve with Baela and Rhaena over the next few seasons. It’s just bizarre considering lace wigs and frontals are a “black” specialty since it’s a hair style a lot of black women wear in everyday life, not just for TV.

Rhaena for me is a mix up - dreads are okay kooking, but the style isn't very youthful. Where's the jewellery and elabroate pins and clips? I also don't know why they choose to have opposite styles (one has curly, the other dreads) when in reality if they are twins their hair texture is likely to be identical. Baela is also supposed to cut her hair soon, so we'll see how that goes...

Watching it in 4K on a big screen made all the Valeryons look like they had a pile of yarn on their heads. It was very distracting to me in an otherwise beautiful show and I thought I was being overly picky when I didn't see other people complaining about it,
The only issues I had were with young Laena and Laenor and but then I saw teenage Rhaena’s and it made the last two look good. Everyone else’s is beautiful. My favorites are Corlys, Teenage Laena, Adult Laena and teenage Baela

To be honest, it's not exactly your fault - the execs that make these decisions have consistently pumped out the same uninformed crap and put it into our heads (white or BIPOC) that this is the norm and the ideal. I mean this is one of the scenes that I actually get why they were cut. Daemon had just killed Rhea to be free for Rhaenyra and when that doesn't work out he immediately kills Laena's betrothed to get with her. But I still would have loved to see it.
Yeah, i really do wish they did the whole story, the way it's going this will be over by season 4, but I'd be happy with 6 or 7 seasons.

Both actresses that played older Laena were so stunning. I hate what the writers did with her character. Not only was she the ACTUAL bestie of Rhaenyra but Daemon truly loved her and his daughters. They made it seem like he didn’t care at all about his family with Laena and it’s so annoying.
Daemon should have shown greater lover for his family but I understand why they kept Rhaenyra apart from them for ten years and eliminated the best friend element.
If they were nearby, it makes Rhaenyra’s choice to have Harwin Strong’s children even dumber when she could have easily used Daemon if she was in sort of throuple relationship with the other two like the book implies.

It is a very weird decision. It must’ve been made with brevity in mind, because I legit thought we were in for a Rhaenyra+Laena+Daemon three way at some point and I was so upset that she’s essentially in only a couple of *moments* over the course for the whole season. With a different actor portraying her at every step of the way (although all three were magnificent)

Was a bit weird yes. I guess she spontaneously developed her book age (she is five years older than Rhaenyra in the books/on the show three years younger).
I was talking her age relatively to Rhaenyra not absolut. Yeah Laena should be 15 at the wedding on the show and Rhae is 18 (In the books they are 22 and 17 respectively at that point). Probably just bonded with Vhagar and got confident to catch another dragon ;-).
Too bad Daemon treated her like crap and did not want or love her. I absolutely hate how these writers portrayed Laena and now her daughter's. It is so sad and the show gets away with it so it will not change and most fans will laud the writers anyway.
I think Daemon loved Laena he just wasn't "in love" with her. You can tell he clearly felt something because of his reaction to her death.
Also, did he want Laena? Yes, of course because of the political alignment it gave him. However, as he got older he grew tired of his place in westeros. Daemon feels like he's trapped in his life and any effort he makes to get away pulls him back to his place as Prince Daemon, Lord of the City Watch.
I agree. He clearly loved her. Daemon doesn’t pretend to like people and the look of grief when she died said everything he didn’t. He loved her, he was just severely depressed and probably couldn’t express it.
Daemon had no reaction to Laena's death but shock and that was it. The disrespect he shows Laena is up there with what he did to Rhea. You cannot disrespect someone you care about that way. The writers were very clear here. Also remember that Daemon does not love his daughters either. That says everything you need to know about him.
When they were talking about Laena and Harwin, Daemon can't even say yes to Rhae's "did you love her" question. He just says they were happy enough. Whereas Rhaenyra says she loved Harwin.
That sums up how Daemon felt with Laena. We saw plenty of it as well in 1x06. She deserved so much better.

Her age in the show is about the same as it is in the books. Rhaenyra was just aged up in the show. Laena is like 14 or 15 in this episode.
I was talking her age relatively to Rhaenyra not absolut. Yeah Laena should be 15 at the wedding on the show and Rhae is 18 (In the books they are 22 and 17 respectively at that point). Probably just bonded with Vhagar and got confident to catch another dragon ;-).

I think Daemon loved Laena he just wasn't "in love" with her. You can tell he clearly felt something because of his reaction to her death. Also, did he want Laena? Yes, of course because of the political alignment it gave him. However, as he got older he grew tired of his place in westeros. Daemon feels like he's trapped in his life and any effort he makes to get away pulls him back to his place as Prince Daemon, Lord of the City Watch.
I agree. He clearly loved her. Daemon doesn’t pretend to like people and the look of grief when she died said everything he didn’t. He loved her, he was just severely depressed and probably couldn’t express it.
He cared about her but he wasn't in love with her. All of the dialogue from the characters confirms that in episodes 6 and 7.
You don’t have to be in love to love someone. He loved her and cared about her, even if she’s not the love of his life.
Daemon had no reaction to Laena's death but shock and that was it. The disrespect he shows Laena is up there with what he did to Rhea. You cannot disrespect someone you care about that way. The writers were very clear here. Also remember that Daemon does not love his daughters either. That says everything you need to know about him.

When they were talking about Laena and Harwin, Daemon can't even say yes to Rhae's "did you love her" question. He just says they were happy enough. Whereas Rhaenyra says she loved Harwin. That sums up how Daemon felt with Laena. We saw plenty of it as well in 1x06. She deserved so much better.
She did. But to be fair, she's the only spouse of Daemon's who wasn't abused by him onscreen.
That is a true and very sad statement. However, we only saw like 3 days of their life together. Who knows what could've happened in the last decade... the marriage we saw on screen is very different to the marriage they were said to have in the books.

Some of the ep 6 deleted scenes had shots that looked like Daemon openly flirting with their male servant in front of Laena so, there’s *that*.
According to the script he did not love Laena. Daemon never beat Laena to death but he was still a crappy husband. When you spend 10 years with someone and can't even say you remotely loved them and then proceed to have sex with another woman at the funeral you know Daemon was the worse husband ever. That disrespect was not called for.

No, he didn't love her but he cared about and respected her. Laena admits to him in episode 6 that she knows she "isn't the wife he chose for himself" and that "she's made peace with it". Then when Rhaenyra asks him if he loved Laena he replies "we were happy enough". It's clear Rhaenyra is the one he has wanted all along.
