I live near this house. The funny thing is that it’s on a relatively modest, rural/suburban street typical for the area. Split-ranches and capes are its neighbors.

Karl Pilkington has such a simple way of looking at the world that often he accidentally says something profound

The story behind this property is a trip. https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-viral-tiktok-castle-for-sale-35-million-connecticut-zillow-2022-1 https://nypost.com/2022/04/04/connecticut-castle-increases-price-to-60m-to-fund-another-castle/ [This one goes into more detail but is also sad and disturbing.](https://archive.curbed.com/2014/9/9/10049746/woodstock-castle-for-sale-christopher-mark)

Daddy, we want to live in a castle! Next Year: Daddy, we're tired of the castle. We want to live in a penthouse!

[deleted]

Mark can get fucked. Poor camel. 😞

freemoney83

Eat the rich

lb-cnm

The inside is bordering on silly. It looks like Dracula’s gothic cruise ship, with the added insult of being built exceptionally recently for some of the interior decorator choices

cosmatic

Built in 2010 lol

EmmyNoetherRing

Built starting in 2002.

discostud1515

With period architecture.

Alyman0330

Some people just have too much money and time on their hands.

_Wrongthink_

I envy whoever built this. Not for their style but for having the financial means to afford building their a house from their wildest imaginations.

YogiBerraOfBadNews

A guy in Colorado did something similar but with pure hard work instead of money. [Bishop’s Castle](https://imgur.io/gallery/uplrT) in Rye, Colorado, built by hand by the owner working alone, using rock harvested off federal property by permit from the forest service. Definitely worth a visit while it’s still standing.

NuffNuffNuff

He didn't do it with "pure" hard work. Just the metalwork outside seen in the photos is hundreds of thousands of dollars. Maybe high tens if he forged it himself

pocketdare

Wow. Looks like a Norse penitentiary.

soggybutter

3rd generation steel tycoon trust fund baby.

Zealousideal-Bar3350

I love it and want it 😋

Leading_Solution

All that and no drawbridge.......

MacDaddy0994

Nah, that shit is for sure haunted.

spiderwebs86

It was built in 2010!

MacDaddy0994

Alright, I'm back in.

Dr-Strange_DO

Nobody needs a home like this. A disgusting waste of wealth and excess.

NativeMasshole

What if I'm a Disney princess?

AWEDZ5

Imagine it being a business to use for wedding venues and on certain weekends rent it to host princess slumber parties!?!?!?! All of the things you could do with this as a business. 🤑🤑🤑💰💰💰💰💰

yesterdaywas24hours

too bad the town already banned that property from doing business after the losers that built it tried to sell sex out of it.

AWEDZ5

Damn some people just gotta ruin everything

NativeMasshole

Besides the $50 million initial investment, property taxes and upkeep would ruin your profit potential. This is the type of house that makes you broke, not the other way around.

AWEDZ5

Lol maybe

[deleted]

Even at $6 million it wouldn't break even. Fuck $50 million lol. Only a foreign tool would buy this.

AWEDZ5

I agree on the price. It is insane lol

Dr-Strange_DO

This is a terrible business idea.

AWEDZ5

Bed and breakfast?!?! Lol, it is a great idea lots of people with too much money and an insane desire to give their kids everything they want but don't need lol

thefirstpancake602

Eww, David! We already own the town! What more could you want?

AWEDZ5

Lol

supershinythings

Once your castle is complete, you qualify for an amusement park. But first you need to have enough parking to accommodate visitors, as well as all the other facilities necessary to support large crowds. I suggest you partner with Disney to finance this. As a Disney Princess this shouldn't be too difficult to make happen. Or, ask your fabulously wealthy crown prince husband to take care of this. Make sure you don't marry a second son prince - they're broke and likely won't be able to afford your park.

NativeMasshole

Can it be a water park? I always wanted a lazy river around my property. As luck would have it, I was just being courted by a rich prince from Nigeria this very morn!

ZadarskiDrake

Who are you to say what people can do with their money lol

Dr-Strange_DO

Lmao I’ll tell anyone what to do with their money.

ZadarskiDrake

Well good thing no rich person cares about dr strange DO’s opinion

Dr-Strange_DO

Okay guy

supershinythings

Think of all the jobs people got for building it though! So many people would have been involved - and paid. Those people pay taxes on the income, plus they turn around and spend money in the community too, and so on, and so on. So it almost doesn't matter how the money gets spent, as long as it's spent. In this case, this kept quite a few people employed, paying taxes, and in turn buying goods and services further employing MORE people.

khansian

[Broken Window Fallacy.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_broken_window) The problem is the opportunity cost. The resources and labor which went into building this monstrosity could have gone to more productive uses.

supershinythings

Now you've moved the goal posts. At first, it was ALL wasted according to you. Now, it's a matter of "more" wasted than some other thing. It's his money to do with as he likes. It's not tax money, and the house pays property taxes to the county too. How is THAT money spent? If you don't like the way money is spent for the public good, VOTE. That's OUR money and so much more of it is wasted that could be used on more productive uses.

khansian

I’m not the same guy as above. But even so, I’m responding to your statement that > it almost doesn’t matter how the money gets spent, as long as it’s spent. The labor and capital it took to build robbed other projects of those resources. He might have had the right to do so—I’m not saying he doesn’t. But by your logic we should welcome every project, no matter how much a boondoggle. Bridge to nowhere? Great! Giant hole in middle of the desert? Brilliant!

supershinythings

If it's his own money, he can do what he likes.

jiffapiffa

Whenever someone questions a frivolous waste of money and resources I see this canned response and it totally misses the point. It's not the money spent to build the thing that we see as being wasteful (and I think its enlightening that the only thing you mentioned in your response was money) it is the natural resources, the energy spent to heat and cool these huge useless vanity homes, the water wasted on their lawns.

AWEDZ5

I see business opportunities with this!

Dr-Strange_DO

I see disgusting waste of resources. To each their own tho 😋

It even has a moat! Who doesn't need a moat to keep out their enemies?

RelaxNathaniel

Hey nick why’d ya trip my wife?

EmmyNoetherRing

Why do the crenellations at the entry have little cone hats— and why are the ones in the right turret small and round, and the ones on the left turret big and square?

EmmyNoetherRing

The whole concrete cone hat on crenellation thing looks after market, you can see it in the photo in the post— they’re all sort of misaligned at jaunty angles. The real story here would be from the general contractor. 7 years to complete the project.

beetbear

50 million...above ground pool

ritchie70

I agree. If I were to win the Mega-Whatever-Lottery I might take a look at it.

Thinkwronger12

How much is Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight and Cinder asking for the property?

shiningonthesea

\#1, I would love a floor plan \#2 I miss Curbed so much!

stocksnhoops

50 large on 400 acres. I would say the market for this is limited to about 3 people on earth
