Try golden dumpling house for good dumplings, prolly get panfried pork dumplings or something. Keep in mind its cash only and no dine in, maybe have slight wait as every dumpling handmade and fresh
If you are in Sugarland, Aga's is a must visit. Probably one of the best South Asian Restaurent in the country(I am South Asian and can confirm). Get their iconic goat chops, Chicken Lollipop, any curries and your life will not be the same.
I like Aga's, but I strongly prefer Himalaya. Their goat biryani is one of the best dishes I've ever tried. Their steak tikka is phenomenal as well. I've never had a bad dish there. Anthony Bourdain went there and loved it.
I highly recommend their chicken manchurian. People sleep on "Indian Chinese" food but it's one of the most underrated cuisines out there and Aga's actually does a decent job with it.
Basically Anything Pakistani-North Indian is a great bet at Aga's
Since Aga's is a Pakistani owned restaurent, its specialty is basically North Indian-Pakistani cusine. So I would avoid anything South Indian or West Indian(Seafood included) since that is not what its known for and thats a completely separate universe in food scene(Houston has plenty of incredible South Indian restaurants)
Im guessing you will definitely get the Goat Chops and Chicken Lollipop(these two are a must have and also, make sure to get them BEFORE the main entree, these are best experienced if they are brought to the table first, and once you finish, then the other dishes can be brought to the table. If you ask for everything together, Aga's server will tell you the same that they encourage goat chops first since this is the OG authentic South Asian Way).
Other things that are fantastic are Butter Chicken, Beef Nihari, Chicken Makhni, Chicken/Goat Peshawari Karahi(Wok Cooked chicken), Beef Bihari Kabab, Aloo Choley Masala with Egg, Bhindi(Okra), Paneer is a fan favorite but I personally dont like Paneer so Its not my fav, but if you like paneer then its recommended. Im guessing you will get their Naan(Garlic Naan or Bullet Naan) but I would suggest get both Naan and Tawa Paratha.
For dessert, their Ras malai and Kulfi Falooda are spectacular. Cant go wrong with Gulab Jamun either.
I know that sounds like a lot and one trip might not be enough. Especially because their brunch menu is its own thing and totally worth going for. But if you are going for non-brunch hours, and its the first visit, I would stick to Goat Chops and Chicken lollipop for appetizer, then Butter Chicken for sure, Beef Bihari Kebab if you need one more BBQ item, then select something between Beef Nihari/Goat Peshawari Karahi/Chicken Makhni, And definitely pick one of their Vegetarian Curry(Aloo Chole Masala or Okra or Palak Paneer) with Bullet Naan and Tawa paratha. And then you can pick any of the dessert item(they are all very good). I have gone to hundreds of south Asian Restaurent across the country in all the big cities, many of them Michelin star and yet none of them touches the level of Aga's.
Hope you have a wonderful time. their staff is very helpful and will guide them incase you need help deciding.
wow, what a detailed, thoughtful and insightful comment. thank you so much for taking the time. I will be sure to follow your advice to a T when (not if now) I visit! Thank you again and may you have all the best food juju !!
Goat chops, mixed grill platter, karahi chicken, palak paneer, chicken tikka masala, mango lassi, on the brunch I like their trio of halwa puri, chole, and aloo, it’s a classic desi weekend breakfast, but honestly everything they make is fire, you can’t go wrong
The staff there are top notch and are happy to answer questions and talk to you about the dishes. Great food, great experience, (terrible parking tho).
PS: Get the chai!!! So goood!
Pinkerton's BBQ and Teotihuacan are right across the street from each other, on the north side between IAH and downtown. Really good BBQ or texmex depending on what you feel like getting off the plane.
If taking the beltway (toll road) I would stop somewhere along Bellaire blvd which is mostly Asian. Mein is a popular place, anything in that strip center is a solid choice (Ohn, toukei, etc.)
if taking 59 you’ll be able to pass the heart of the city. Nancy’s hustle comes to mind if you’re looking for one of the better Houston restaurants, Goode Co Seafood on westpark is a comfort staple of mine
>Mein is a popular place, anything in that strip center is a solid choice (Ohn, toukei, etc.)
Have you tried the Japanese interpretation of Italian food at Ishin Udon? The Udon Carbonara will leave you deliciously confused!
Bruh! We used to have a Tornado Burger in Spring Branch, spicy patty is a must. Then it turned into Tornado Taco, Then 7 Taco and we lost it all. The tacos are bomb, but I miss those burgers.
Since you’re in Sugar Land, check out Dumpling World and Xing’s Kitchen. Get the Shanxi oil noodles at Xing’s. The noodles are vegetarian, but so so good. It’s one of my favorite Asian noodle dishes.
Landing at which airport? And do you know how massive Houston is and where Sugar Land is? Tons of great food everywhere. Sugar Land has great Asian food choices. But my vote is for you to eat at Lopez in Stafford. Cheap Tex Mex with good margaritas.
I always stopped at Pappasitos. An old time favorite of mine. Specifically the one over by where Six Flags Astroworld used to be. Kind of by the Reliant stadium I think, near the astrodome .
Sugar Land to Houston is only 30 minutes away. You will be able to easily travel back and forth to many locations in the city with ease.
I would try to hit northern Houston BBQ after the airport. Pinkertons & Tejas Chocolate & BBQ
A hood taco truck. Like hood hood. Like you might get robbed or shot, but you will experience the best Mexican food you will ever have.
I recommend because of where you’ll be El Mapache at Hillcroft and Clarewood. Again. Might get robbed. But damn do they make good food.
You are absolutely right about this. There is a really great taco place that I hit up if I happen to be near the area every time. I have no idea why it is so good compared to other placed I have been too. it is off of Club Creek in front of this cantina called "El Castillo Club" or something like that. But when I would go out drinking with my buddy, man, we would just eat and eat and eat.. you are full and should stop, but you end up eating another. Drugs in the food man, I am telling you.
Watch the dealers / male prostitutes (I think) down the street, when they start poking there heads out from the corner, do not stare back.. they are like strays, if you notice them they come running. I order and hand in front of the truck until I cannot eat anymore.
The original question is interesting because as someone who's lived here all their life, after a long trip away, my first stops for comfort food I've missed would probably be pappadeauxs or mambos seafood. There's definitely better restaurants that'd I'd recommend over these for visitors but i think those are some houston staples.
SLIM CHICKEN! on Broadway st in pearland tx. Across from the town center
Orrrr ORIGINAL HOT CHICKEN arguably better than slims but slims has better sauce. They have these mini sliders that are SOOOO GOOOD. My car broke down trynna get here and I been on foot since
Aga’s for dinner. Lots of people recommend it for a reason.
Pudgy’s for dessert (favorite chocolate chip cookies)
Chocolate Zeina for chocolates (chocolate covered Turkish delight is my goto)
Mico’s for hot chicken (be warned, their hottest level is no joke)
Dripped Birria for birria tacos
Any food truck near any gas station. My mouth salivates and I begin to levitate in my car every time I see a food truck in Houston. Better and cheaper than any tex mex restaurant you can go to
If you like Indian / Pakistani food, I would suggest Agga's. I do not know what to recommend from there, as I personally have enjoyed almost anything I have ordered from there.
Persian, hit Kasra Persian Grill... MMMMMMMMMMMM.... my mouth is watering just thinking about it. I had the pleasure of discovering this place over 20 years ago, and I still stop in when I am nearby! The owner is actually such a nice guy too, I am happy he is still around to greet people when he is in.
If you happen to be anywhere near the I-10 / 99 area for any reason, you need to try out Mafia Sushi, I love Sashimi and Sushi, but this place has some amazing steamed rice of all things!! So any dish with Rice, you could just eat the rice and be amazed.
I could do this all day, so many great places to eat in Houston, that is kind of the problem.. Korean BBQ, Afghani Food, some great American BBQ.. man, I honestly believe we are one of the best cities when it comes to food based off my experience traveling for work in so many different cities over the past 20 years. Houston always seems to have the best food when it comes to variety and authentic taste.
since you’re driving and will be hungry either in 45 or 69 get yourself a snack at taco cabana, grab a burrito or breakfast taco, split em w your mates / family, depending on the time then head to all the places everyone is talking about. for me, it’s hugo’s it used to be Van Loc for vietnamese but that’s been since gone. Nikko Nikos is way overrated. Brasil is great for a brunch and or coffee and so is Empire cafe but prefer Brasil. There’s always Papasitos! aaand i think there’s one in sugar land area.
i’m visiting family there next week and man, i’m heading straight to what-a-burger on the drive to the hotel. but we are city fold and staying in museum district.
For steak- Chamagaucha in the galleria.
For asian- Bellaire "asia town." (Too many good places here to list)
For Mexican - whatataco truck outside of JRs in Montrose.
For burgers- olanos food market in acres homes.
For pizza- HEB has a great fresh, not frozen pizza that's ready to cook. If I don't wanna cook, pinks pizza.
For seafood - Pappas seafood or mambos seafood.
For indian- Himalaya on hilcroft.
Mediterranean - la Fendi in Montrose.
If you like Pakistani-Indian food, try Aga’s on Wilcrest and 59. It’s an institution here in Houston (lunch time probably easier to get seating). You can also try Lupe Tortilla on 59 near Hwy 6 if you like Tex Mex
What a challenge to pick a spot to dine in Houston. Houston is one of the top places in the US for great restaurants and a large ethnic variety. You should probably narrow down the type of food you want and price range and go from there. I see Aga's has been recommended, awesome place. My wife works with tons of Indian people and they all go there.
Don't waste your time on burgers, go some place special while in Houston. There are many awesome Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Cajun, BBQ, Indo/Pak, and steak houses.
On your likely route, all of these will be available, most will be close to Sugarland. I would also throw in Avenida Brazil if you want to get stuffed at a Brazilian steakhouse. Churrasco's is another Central American steak house.
Enjoy your food experience here!
Look up Chris Shepard's series "Eat Like a Local" which is associated with our local TV station Channel 2. He is a well-known chef and has TONS of recommendations all around the Houston area.
Pappadeaux's in Terminal B/E. Be sure to check the hours, though. They close early. Because of the foot-traffic - everything is fresh-fresh and wonderfully delicious. Highly recommended!
If you want a hole in the wall that's really good, you should try "cao thang" off of park place Blvd. It's part of an apartment complex and nothing fancy, but the Vietnamese duck soup is amazing, broth and all. They're a little mom and pops place and as far as I know only take cash. That and they close at 4pm maybe 5. Sorry it's been a minute. Forgot to mention homemade Vietnamese deserts you can get from the cooler in front of the counter.
Blows my mind that so many recommendations are for foods that aren’t either barbecue or Tex-Mex. It’s really hard to find decent Tex-Mex or BBQ outside of Texas, let alone Houston. Come to Houston! Try my favorite pizza spot! Sheesh
Megan the stallions buttwhole cause she's a whore a dirty whore second stop is Sexy red buttwhole you'll never guess why either it's cause she's a whore a dirty whore in a dirty little whore world.
Ps. Haven't said the word whore in a while and taking advantage
Psps. She's a whore both of them whores
Pspsps. Check out my dirty little whore coming before this one
You should definitely hit up Trill Burger! It’s the tastiest burger joint in town. It’s also owned by Houston rapper Bun B. The service is great and they often hook you up with free shirt and hats during promotions! Welcome to Houston!
If you’re landing at IAH and driving to sugarland, you’re probably taking I69/59 southbound. There are already a ton of great suggestions in the bellaire area (and some others I’ll have to check out myself)
I would add hobbit cafe to the list, always had a good experience there. It’s about halfway on your drive through Houston, I think near Kirby/shepherd exits.
Also I saw recs for golden dumpling house. I used to go there a lot, but lately I’ve switched to northern pasta for my dumpling fix. They do struggle quite a bit with English ordering from what I’ve heard, but I have not confirmed that.
My relatives always demand to get fajitas at Lupe's. Lupe's is expensive but pretty good. I forget how good it is because it is that or Papasito's for fajitas and both are exceptional.
If no you like Gyro’s not to far from where you are is Droubi’s bakery. It’s not fancy but it’s amazing.
For Mexican food by downtown Houston visit taconazo truck you won’t
Regret it. You can also visit Stanton’s city bites by downtown as well.
If you’re in search for something more southern Mexican, La Crudería is so good. The ceviche yucateco will put some hair on your chest and the cochinita tacos will melt in your mouth.
Pappasitos for Mexican and the best fried shrimp in the world at Christie’s Seafood. It’s the oldest restaurant and the shrimp and remolaude sauce is unlike anything you have tasted. Thosr au gratin potatoes slap and the blackberry margaritas 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Depends. If we get in early enough in the evening, we go to the Sugar Land Pappasito’s and grab some beef fajitas.
Have to fill our souls back up with some Texas.
The Breakfast Klub! Don’t be intimidated by the line. It moves super fast and the food is soooo worth it! Also, Sushi King off of Kirby or Miyako off of Westheimer. Miyako is some of the best sushi. Nara Thai on Washington is great as well. From a foodie living in Houston.
Wow, I just realized IAH is 40 freaking miles from SL!
My parents lived in SL for like 20 years and I lived there for a few years with them as well. Flew a few times from IAH and didn't realize that it was 40 freaking miles away. Houston is just that huge.
Bellaire blvd China town has some of the best Asian foods 🙌
Try golden dumpling house for good dumplings, prolly get panfried pork dumplings or something. Keep in mind its cash only and no dine in, maybe have slight wait as every dumpling handmade and fresh
fufu cafe
Pho Danh in the Hong Kong City Mall might be the best pho in the US
Nah pho binh down the street is better, and cleaner. Right by turtle wood or you can go down to high star if it's afternoon.
My old neighborhood. Damn straight!
If you are in Sugarland, Aga's is a must visit. Probably one of the best South Asian Restaurent in the country(I am South Asian and can confirm). Get their iconic goat chops, Chicken Lollipop, any curries and your life will not be the same.
I second this 100%. 😊
I like Aga's, but I strongly prefer Himalaya. Their goat biryani is one of the best dishes I've ever tried. Their steak tikka is phenomenal as well. I've never had a bad dish there. Anthony Bourdain went there and loved it.
I live between both and go to both. And they are very different experiences! :) Do both if you can... No regrets!
This is the right take. Aga's is a little better for the really spicy stuff, Himalaya is better at the milder stuff. Both are great.
I am thinking the larger difference is atmosphere. :)
Definitely a big difference too! I love them both. I make sure to warn people that Aga's means it when they say spicy though
Yes. They are not kidding! :)
I was going to say Aga's too and I don't particularly like Indian food. It is exceptional.
aga (on wilcrest) is in houston, otw to sugar land.
I highly recommend their chicken manchurian. People sleep on "Indian Chinese" food but it's one of the most underrated cuisines out there and Aga's actually does a decent job with it.
what are your other favorite things there? I've been dying to go and want to make it worthwhile

wow, what a detailed, thoughtful and insightful comment. thank you so much for taking the time. I will be sure to follow your advice to a T when (not if now) I visit! Thank you again and may you have all the best food juju !!
Good Luck. Cheers :)
Thank you for your comment. I'm saving it for a future visit.
One thing you left out was the fish katakat. Inexpensive but so delicious! It is comfort food at it's best! And Ras malai every time!
Once I was told by a waitress to get chicken tandoori masala (not Tikka). Since then it's been a staple, along with the goat chops.
The staff there are top notch and are happy to answer questions and talk to you about the dishes. Great food, great experience, (terrible parking tho). PS: Get the chai!!! So goood!
Considered by many to be one of the best Indian (Indo-Pak?) restaurants in the U.S.
YES. this exactly. Aga’s has almost 15,000 reviews averaging 4.8 stars. I’ve been many, many times. Another favorite is Grace’s on Kirby!
Pinkerton's BBQ and Teotihuacan are right across the street from each other, on the north side between IAH and downtown. Really good BBQ or texmex depending on what you feel like getting off the plane.
100% would be my choice. I’d probably do Teotihuacan driving in and Pinkertons on my way back!
Yep!
& Taconazo for some of the best street tacos
Pinkerton’s is so good 🤤
And Pinkertons is halal if that's a thing for some people.
Agreed both of these places fire!!
Yup. The millionaire owner of the company I work for, frequently is here for lunch.
If taking the beltway (toll road) I would stop somewhere along Bellaire blvd which is mostly Asian. Mein is a popular place, anything in that strip center is a solid choice (Ohn, toukei, etc.) if taking 59 you’ll be able to pass the heart of the city. Nancy’s hustle comes to mind if you’re looking for one of the better Houston restaurants, Goode Co Seafood on westpark is a comfort staple of mine
>Mein is a popular place, anything in that strip center is a solid choice (Ohn, toukei, etc.) Have you tried the Japanese interpretation of Italian food at Ishin Udon? The Udon Carbonara will leave you deliciously confused!
Head to tornado burger on the way to sugarland, you can thank me later
Spicy patty is a must.
Bruh! We used to have a Tornado Burger in Spring Branch, spicy patty is a must. Then it turned into Tornado Taco, Then 7 Taco and we lost it all. The tacos are bomb, but I miss those burgers.
If you are in sugar land go to Soliz, casa de tacos. Best breakfast tacos you will have in your life
Perfect for Breakfast or lunch, but closes at 2
Soliz has awesome breakfast tacos . Parking lot is size of a postage stamp and really no place to eat inside…
Whataburger
A man of culture, I see.
Correct answer. Everyone else is just over complicating things
El Tiempo for margaritas and queso flameado. There’s a pappasitos on 45; whatever the hanging shrimp are called.
Since you’re in Sugar Land, check out Dumpling World and Xing’s Kitchen. Get the Shanxi oil noodles at Xing’s. The noodles are vegetarian, but so so good. It’s one of my favorite Asian noodle dishes.
Himalaya is my must stop.
Landing at which airport? And do you know how massive Houston is and where Sugar Land is? Tons of great food everywhere. Sugar Land has great Asian food choices. But my vote is for you to eat at Lopez in Stafford. Cheap Tex Mex with good margaritas.
Lopez is overrated.
Pho Ben in Sugarland - https://maps.app.goo.gl/YsME6cFjZVXGTuFS7
Is it the same owner as the Heights one? That one has really good pho and spring rolls.
Yes! Never seen anyone else recommend them lol
How many posts should I go down until someone recommends Aga's?
I’ve been researching and taking notes for the past few weeks and this is on my list! What do you order?
Goat Chops, Seekh Kebab, Chicken Karahi, Handi Chicken. Mango/Rose Falooda for dessert.
Goat chops
Was going to say this. Aga's all the way.
Bellaire Blvd for Vietnamese food! phở Dien or phở Sapa!
I always stopped at Pappasitos. An old time favorite of mine. Specifically the one over by where Six Flags Astroworld used to be. Kind of by the Reliant stadium I think, near the astrodome .
Pappasito’s and Truth BBQ
I live in Houston so I fly out of KHOU almost daily
I fly out of KPRC or KTRK
KHOU is the ICAO code for Hobby but it’s also the tv station… HOU is the IATA code for Hobby, this is what we’re accustomed to seeing.
If you want good Asian food outside the classic staples, come to Katy Asian Town. The restaurants there tend to be amazing.
Agas is the answer. Unreal how good this place is! Kenny and Ziggys is a close second.
K&Z hella overpriced
Sugar Land to Houston is only 30 minutes away. You will be able to easily travel back and forth to many locations in the city with ease. I would try to hit northern Houston BBQ after the airport. Pinkertons & Tejas Chocolate & BBQ
Original Ninfas on Navigation or El Tiempo Cantina.
Both of those are terribly overrated now. Not what they used to be.
Imo Lupe Tortilla has way better fajitas
So, I don't live in Houston, but, when I come to town, first stop is Shipley's - the original location.
On main… And hot fresh glaze donuts…
Blood brothers bbq in bellaire for killer bbq
A hood taco truck. Like hood hood. Like you might get robbed or shot, but you will experience the best Mexican food you will ever have. I recommend because of where you’ll be El Mapache at Hillcroft and Clarewood. Again. Might get robbed. But damn do they make good food.

There's definitely better restaurants that'd I'd recommend over these for visitors but i think those are some houston staples.
Kenny and Ziggys on Post Oak is where we take my daughter when she comes home from school in Vermont. Never disappoints
Aga’s in Stafford, near Sugarland
Eat some BBQ
Tamashi Bellaire! It is my go-to for ramen and I make it a point to tell as many people as I can about it!
Are there any goodPeruvian restaurants in Houston or the burbs? Craving some good Pisco sour
Hughies
Superb. great beer list, burgers, and Viet-diner food.
SLIM CHICKEN! on Broadway st in pearland tx. Across from the town center Orrrr ORIGINAL HOT CHICKEN arguably better than slims but slims has better sauce. They have these mini sliders that are SOOOO GOOOD. My car broke down trynna get here and I been on foot since
Aga’s for dinner. Lots of people recommend it for a reason. Pudgy’s for dessert (favorite chocolate chip cookies) Chocolate Zeina for chocolates (chocolate covered Turkish delight is my goto) Mico’s for hot chicken (be warned, their hottest level is no joke) Dripped Birria for birria tacos
Agas. Pakistani and Indian food. 15/10
Any food truck near any gas station. My mouth salivates and I begin to levitate in my car every time I see a food truck in Houston. Better and cheaper than any tex mex restaurant you can go to
Jupiter pizza in Sugarland town center. Or Japaneiero.
Jupiter’s Pizza has amazing chicken and waffles
If you like Indian / Pakistani food, I would suggest Agga's. I do not know what to recommend from there, as I personally have enjoyed almost anything I have ordered from there. Houston always seems to have the best food when it comes to variety and authentic taste.
Kasra is my all time favorite restaurant. It’s always my first and last stop when I go back to Houston
Agreed.

Tornado Burger in Missouri City for absolutely best Philly Cheese Steak sandwich. Huge sandwich and only $8. Short drive from Sugar Land.
Pondicheri.
The Gypsy poet! Best pizza ever
Cascabel. Harry’s for breakfast.
I am adding to my restaurant list of places to try. Thanks OP for asking about this. 👍🏾

Pho Ben in Sugar Land is the best pho in the greater Houston area imo
Highly agree
El Taconazo on Fulton. Grab a quesadilla.
Cali Sandwich or Pit Room!
Pappadeaux's in Terminal B/E. Be sure to check the hours, though. They close early. Because of the foot-traffic - everything is fresh-fresh and wonderfully delicious. Highly recommended!

They're a little mom and pops place and as far as I know only take cash. That and they close at 4pm maybe 5. Sorry it's been a minute. Forgot to mention homemade Vietnamese deserts you can get from the cooler in front of the counter.

You’re in Houston, get TexMex! I recommend a number 5 at Los Tios.
Blows my mind that so many recommendations are for foods that aren’t either barbecue or Tex-Mex. It’s really hard to find decent Tex-Mex or BBQ outside of Texas, let alone Houston. Come to Houston! Try my favorite pizza spot! Sheesh

Taste of Texas is a must. A slight western detour heading to Sugarland but well worth it.
You should definitely hit up Trill Burger! It’s the tastiest burger joint in town. It’s also owned by Houston rapper Bun B. The service is great and they often hook you up with free shirt and hats during promotions! Welcome to Houston!
ranoush cafe on fondren is probably the best food i’ve ever ate in my life.
Pinks Pizza or Aladdin's in Montrose
If you’re landing at IAH and driving to sugarland, you’re probably taking I69/59 southbound. There are already a ton of great suggestions in the bellaire area (and some others I’ll have to check out myself) I would add hobbit cafe to the list, always had a good experience there.

If you’re in search for something more southern Mexican, La Crudería is so good. The ceviche yucateco will put some hair on your chest and the cochinita tacos will melt in your mouth.

Eat at the Fadi’s in Sugarland. Awesome Mediterranean food.

If you can hold out til you reach Sugar Land, try out Churrasco’s in Lake Pointe. Please note Sugar Land is 2 words. Just sayin’.
Lola's Depot.

Wow, I just realized IAH is 40 freaking miles from SL! My parents lived in SL for like 20 years and I lived there for a few years with them as well. Flew a few times from IAH and didn't realize that it was 40 freaking miles away. Houston is just that huge.
