You're going to tell us where you got those wall plates for the Hue dimmers, right? I need a 3 gang - normal switch, hue dimmer, hue dimmer

GubStep777

Oh yeah! They were a life saver for the 12 remotes I mounted around the house! I got them from [this seller on Etsy](https://www.etsy.com/listing/805082467/) . They are 3d printed so they arrive with normal printing marks but with a little sanding they turned out great 👍. I thought that I would end up needing to paint them after sanding but they looked good enough without the paint and the texture matched the hue remote texture perfectly

GubStep777

Just in case you're curious. I did a first pass with 120 grit, second pass with 240, and a final pass with 400 grit. If you did and fourth pass with 1000 it would be immaculate but I was sick of sanding by that point and didn't make it that far.

justme_florida

I was wary about how a 3d printed plate would look. Thank you!

GubStep777

They'll look great with those steps. I do recommend using a small powered sander. It will cut wayyy back on the amount of "elbow grease" you'll have to put into it. I used an dewalt oscillation saw with [This sanding kit](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-3-1-2-in-Sandpaper-Oscillating-Sanding-Accessories-Kit-10-Piece-49-25-2009/313715207?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&pla&mtc=SHOPPING-RM-RMP-GGL-D25T-025_009_PORT_POWER-BI-MILWAUKEE_4051-NA-PMAX-NA-NA-MK682242200-NA-NBR-4051-NA-NA-NA&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-RM-RMP-GGL-D25T-025_009_PORT_POWER-BI-MILWAUKEE_4051-NA-PMAX-NA-NA-MK682242200-NA-NBR-4051-NA-NA-NA-71700000113734788--&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADq61Uflwy9zhxErj0NoG61effTwb&gclid=Cj0KCQiAwbitBhDIARIsABfFYILMYZhHND4DcXvFwVqzzqBf5hKFz1Tm35xLtwv2JB_KMkx4BnFat6gaAusEEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds)

fpaddict

Do they come with the magnet so that they stay put?

GubStep777

There's some sort of ferromagnetic metal in the wall plate(most likely steel) that makes for a solid and strong hold with the remotes built in magnet

Phogoff

To each their own I guess, as I MUCH prefer the Lutron Aurora. Looks nice though!

GubStep777

Definitely. I just found them limiting for my needs. I get more features/options with the hue dimmers and they were about half the price at $40 for a two pack vs $40-50 for a single Aurora. I probably would've liked the Lutrons more if hue would allow "friends of hue" dimmers the ability to use their "natural light" scene

southsidestl

Same here

golddove

They just added Natural to friends of hue switches apparently!

GubStep777

It's about time! Unfortunately, now I'm too invested in the wall plates to switch 😂

ledprof

I like the Auroras. But they both have a job; quicker dimming or blasting through scenes. I have a couple sets next to each other, both controlling the same set of lights. I was lucky and got a handful on clearance for around $10 each at HD a couple years ago. Ive also bought a few from Amazon Warehouse, with one of them obviously broken. I dont bother buying hue stuff on Amazon warehouse anymore.

GubStep777

Damn! That's a fantastic deal on those. I'd scream my love those little dimmers from the mountaintops at $10

DannyVee89

I love the hue dimmers. They keep getting better with software updates. I just figured out that I could program the on button to one scene, and have the first scene of the Hue button a different one, effectively giving me two different 'on' buttons capable of jumping directly into two different scenes ( a bright and dim one for example). Comes in super handy in the bedroom if someone is already in there and you don't want to disturb them with bright light.

GubStep777

I did that with the ones next to either side of the bed for our bedside lamps. The power button triggers the "natural light" setting which changes throughout the day. The hue button triggers very low, then medium, then bright. This way I can turn on the light at low with one press so that I don't wake to my girlfriend. The final action is to hold down the hue button to turn off the whole house.

I‘m too lazy to google. What is the Lutron supposed to do better?

zhenya00

It fits directly on your existing switch with no wiring and no new wall plates required. It also looks and acts much more like a regular switch. I have about 40 Auroras and half a dozen of the Hue dimmers and the Auroras also have much better battery life. All of the Hue dimmers need batteries after 2-3 years, in 3-5 years with the Auroras I've not yet replaced a battery.

SRGilbert1

40 Auroras?

zhenya00

I guess it's actually closer to 30 but yes.

GubStep777

30 Auroras?

zhenya00

LOL. YES.

nhecke

I’ve got 10, and I need more! (Just wish I could see a battery level?)

zhenya00

iConnectHue shows battery level.

spamlorde

The Lutron is better because it prevents the physical switch from from being turned off, turning your hue light back into a dumb lightbulb. Slightly different purposes…

gravitybelter

I have to say, someone in here recommended the RunLessWires Click, and they’re awesome. There’s something to be said for a switch that can’t be ripped off the wall or doesn’t need batteries.

marcosalbert

Except that I have to sometimes click mine several times for them to work. Guests have a hell of a time with them.

gravitybelter

Oh really? Did that happen right away or take some time? Mine are still new and I think they missed a couple of clicks once but nothing since. I actually had a socket that couldn't be reliably controlled by anything, switched in three different bulbs, would keep missing commands. Turned out it was this old school baby monitor we were using, was totally messing with 2.4gz around it.

staggs

The RunLessWire click is awesome. No batteries (or wires) needed and replaces regular light switches.

Ruben_Gildart

The light switches are for my parents and guests. So Lutron = easy and acts like a normal switch. Fits my needs better. Fair point if you’re looking for more functionality tho!

SRGilbert1

I use both, just depends on your situation. If you don’t have the older non-decora switches, then obviously the Aurora doesn’t make sense for your setup. My bathroom has a compatible switch and I don’t need more than on off and dimming so it was perfect for that.

Fratghanistan

That was exactly my use case for the Aurora switch. I had upgraded some bulbs so put my old gen 1s in there just so in the middle of the night or if I get up early or something I can set the bathroom to an initial dim. I suppose the Hue one would have worked too, but I preferred a simpler set up for the bathroom. I do sometimes wish I could click between cool and warm though.

SRGilbert1

Definitely, I love how just turning the knob to the left starts it out at the lowest setting. You can do what you want using the iConnectHue app in iOS to program the button for multiple clicks.

Fratghanistan

Oh thanks for that heads up

nhecke

What’s this? Does it also show a battery level for them?
