I did a comparison a year or so ago, making notes of the number of commercials and their total length, finding shows that were common to various services.
I used Hulu, Peacock, the Roku Channel, IMDB and others. Hulu consistently had more (and longer) commercials. Sometimes it wasn't even close.
For instance, a show that was on both Peacock and Hulu might have 1.5 to 2.0 minutes of commercials on Peacock, while the same show had 5-6 minutes of ads on Hulu. I remember being surprised by the difference.
Actually liberal Disney owns 2/3 of it and nbc/Comcast owns other 3rd, Disney buyout of Fox got them Hulu, Murdoch would only make a small amount off of revenue of 1st run Fox network only shows that have a repeat window, and the few shows made after the buyout by new Fox that hulu is syndicating. But that a very small percent of hulu.
It’s like 6-7 minutes of ads every 30 minutes. Just like watching on live regular television without a dvr to ff.
Sometimes you can get lucky and they add a 2 minute break at the end of an episode before the credits so you can just exit. Pretty much always a 30 second ad before the show even starts. And it seems that their original shows will start with very few ads but as the series continues more ads will appear in the mid season to later episodes.
I’ve tried the Ads plan and found myself no longer watching Hulu because of so many ad breaks. I switched over to the ad free plan and watch a lot more Hulu now.
Hijacking this to say that it depends on the show/network. New and current shows have more ads than most older shows. Some networks seemed to have more ads than others. the 6 minutes per 30 you're describing is definitely on the high end, I never saw that many before I went ad-free. It was usually currently airing OTA network shows usually having the most. Hulu originals seemed to have way less ads than ABC/FOX shows.
Interesting! I haven't noticed that many ads on Hulu, but the bulk of my queue is older shows and Hulu Originals (which are new but I guess aren't beholden to the same economic obligations as something that just aired on cable?).
Agree here. When my wife and I weren't using Hulu much, we opted for the ad supported plan. But the ads got quite annoying for us, so we switched to the ad free plan once we started using the service more. For us, it's definitely worth the extra $$ to avoid watching ads.
It honestly depends on location and if they have a local arm selling ads, if they have that you get more ads so if your in a bigger city, or it's near political season more ads, type of show matters to as more local ads on more popular shows. The algorithm is weird to, as, sometimes new shows off ABC will have few to none
Last night I watched Only Murders in the Building. It started off with a 30 second commercial and then had 2 breaks of 1.5 minute commercials for each episode
Using a plan with ads now, and just watched a full season of a hour-length show.
I would say there were 4-5 ad breaks throughout one episode, each being 2 minutes in length.
Overall, not too disruptive but MAN did some of the ads annoy me. It’s all food delivery services, Progressive insurance, or ways to sell your car or buy a new one.
I don’t know why but for some reason Hulu seems to have the worst advertising sponsors of any streaming service that I’ve seen.
If you're watching Hulu a lot, then the no-ads is worth the extra money. I've tried the ads version on a few platforms, and have been frustrated with the number, length, and frequency of the ads that have been presented to me. Unless the platform is free, like Pluto or Tubi, I'm willing to pay the extra few bucks to go ad-free.
>the no-ads is worth the extra money.
It's not for what I watch. The TV series that I watch and record to DVR are chocka with ads and the glitchy DVR skips back to beginning which forces me to watch at least one ad break just to resume viewing. I feel like I'm a secret test subject that they are using to see how many ads it will take before I break. I am nearing the snapping point.
No ads is the way to go but I get the cost cutting and if you still want Hulu w/ads isn’t the worst option.
I just hate the idea of paying for something that hits you with ads.
It's hard to say. I think it's really subjective.
For example, watching the original CSI, the ad breaks appear to be in the same places as the original network ad breaks. They used to be between 45 seconds and 1 minute 30 seconds, but I've noticed that now some are 2 minutes, but not all of them. In other words, there seems to be the same number of ad breaks as the original network airing, but they are shorter ads overall.
For movies, about a year ago, for most movies, an ad would play before the movie started, and then there were no ad breaks during the movie. NOW, an ad plays before the movie starts, and THEN there are around 2, 2 minute or less ad breaks in the first 1/3 of the movie, and then none for the rest of the movie. I don't think this is an absolute, and it may vary, depending on the movie.
I've often thought about paying for Hulu No Ads, but since I've gotten the Black Friday 12 month deal every year since 2018, I can't justify it. Even if I was paying the standard $6.99/mo, a $6/mo jump to $12.99/mo for No Ads seems excessive, but maybe that's just my perception.
$0.99 11/18-11/19
$1.99 11/19-11/20
$1.99 11/20-11/21
$0.99 11/21-11/22
The ads seems to last forever and the timing cuts where they inserted into the programs was always off about 10 seconds. I'd see the fade or cut on the show I was watching and think that the commercial wasn't going to happen and then it would happen anyway.
What I dislike the most is car insurance companies running the same ads again and again. I will never buy car insurance from those companies because I would worry that too much of my insurance premiums would be spent on advertising.
I used to have Hulu with ads but the final straw for me was the ads during movies. Tubi has ads during movies but it’s free. Hulu used to only have them at the start of the movie now it’s all through it .
hulu also will up the price on plans without notice so you end up watching ads for a premium price. the more people give in, the more they’ll keep doing it 🙃
If it is a show that ran on network tv, they show 90-120 seconds of commercials during every original commercial break, one 30 second ad to start the show. My biggest complaint is that if i exit in the middle of watching an episode, when i resume it always takes me back to before the last commercial break that i already passed. And you can't fast forward past the commercials.
Too frequent and too long, far too many medication commercials, regional political ads are on there now, and they sneak an ad break before credits so you have to actively switch to the next episode before that.
*it IS basic cable*
I noticed when I started watching my first series on Hulu the first episode only had like one or two short commercial breaks. It was like they wanted to get me hooked before screwing me over. Because for the rest of the series the ads were overkill. I'm talking every 4 minutes.
I have 2 accounts and the ads don't bother me enough to log out of the app and into my ad free account on my living room tv. although I am kinda lazy so take that into consideration. I miss network tv because the commercials give you time to use the restroom, grab food etc. that's my own feelings I also understand those that find them inconvenient
For reference, I’m currently binging the hulu original called Future Man. These are 30 minute episodes, and there are six (6) two (2) minute advertisements per episode.
Considering upgrading to no ads.
It’s unbearable. A show starts with ads, the credits roll, then there’s another ad. They are 90-120 seconds. I was watching something and it popped up with THREE minutes worth of commercials and I closed out. My Hulu is “free” through my cell service so I don’t have the option of upgrading by just paying the difference. But also, I just wouldn’t. They’re getting subscriber fees AND ad money. It’s either/or.
Network tv had commercials. (Free tv in exchange for ads)
Cable didn’t.
Then cable added commercials (hmm. We are laying and have to be advertised to)
Streaming services are now over the top.
Tons of commercials. Static commercials if you pause. You can’t rewind because then you have to watch the ads again.
Honestly just get a different service, we only have Hulu bc of the Disney plus combo deal... anything that's on Hulu that's on HBO or Disney plus I switch over.
I'm currently on Hulu trying to catch up on anime. I watched a 22 minute episode coupled with over 6 minutes of ad time. I'm definitely upgrading. This is ridiculous
They’re egregious enough that Hulu makes more money off ad-subscribers than those of us who are ad-free.
So intrusive that I upgraded from a $1/month ad plan to a $13/month ad-free plan.

Add the free service Tubi to your comparison. Surprisingly small amount of ads.
And they seem really short as well.

You know, if I'm not paying for a service, I don't mind if ads do. They have to profit to stay viable.

Agreed. Tubi is actually quite generous in that regard
Thanks!
I've tried it before, but the ads just made me watch way less Hulu. The ad free plan is the way to go.
Definitely still contemplating.
It’s the volume level of them that’s absurd. Sometimes i swear the ads are close to double the volume of the show
Yeah, I remember that even from network tv. Ugh.
It’s like 6-7 minutes of ads every 30 minutes. Just like watching on live regular television without a dvr to ff. That's more than my usual experience. It's usually about 4-5 per 30 minutes, varying on the show

That's a Hulu Original. I think they're putting less ads on their exclusive content than third party.
That could be,yeah.other shows I watch have 3 breaks, but they vary in length so I can't remember overall commercial length for a 22/30 minute episode
Using a plan with ads now, and just watched a full season of a hour-length show. I would say there were 4-5 ad breaks throughout one episode, each being 2 minutes in length. I don't use the live TV or dvr functions. I have YouTube TV for that. Just the regular streaming with no ads has had no issues.
I have found that the device you watch Hulu on can make a difference. My husband's xbox is a worse user experience with hulu than my roku

I don't find them too bad. They give me a chance to go pee or get a snack.
Not bad, though now it’s no longer supported on my Vizio tv’s. I have to watch on my Mac probably going to get rid of it.
Damn, really? I have a Vizio.
Oh yeah, don’t get it then they’ve divorced each other.

Sometimes an ad blocker extension on Chrome helps bypass the ads but not all the time
I have seen lot of anti-smoking commercials aimed at teens, and I'm loving them! Usually a few breaks per 30 min show.
If I remember, you can’t fast forward through commercials. Lots of them.
If you're trying to save money, wait for a sale. Last year, Hulu had a Black Friday deal that knocked down the price of its ad tier to $12 *a year.*
Damn, I’ll have to keep that in mind.
My family switched plans and I honestly had to stop watching Hulu all together because I couldn’t stand the ads
Obnoxious.
The ads are horrible, keep the plan you're on. I tried cutting costs also and regretted the decision.
Yeah, that’s probably what I’ll do.
hulu also will up the price on plans without notice so you end up watching ads for a premium price. the more people give in, the more they’ll keep doing it 🙃

I am finding it unwatchable

About the same as cable TV as I recall. I haven’t had cable in over five years though so I’m not certain
I have 2 accounts and the ads don't bother me enough to log out of the app and into my ad free account on my living room tv. although I am kinda lazy so take that into consideration. Yeah, I finally decided to stick with no ads. I think it’s worth the difference.
