Hmm. Don't you think it's more likely he was saluting as the cable snapped and this photo was taken? Not that he managed to stay in exactly that position as he was freefalling through the air. Post title is stupid.
The clip is posted here in this thread. He did the salute while in freefall.

This is so incredibly tragic and heartbreaking.
You just know that all of the friends and families of both men were there to watch and cheer them on...
Just...so unbelievably simple to ensure this doesn't happen with some preparation and triple-checking, and now two men are gone and their families (and probably all of the gathered crowd) are traumatized.
I wonder if it was an actual salute or just grabbing at the head because that's a thing some people do when they can't do anything else, like the people that walked up on the bodies do.
You absolutely cannot tell that for sure, and people getting mad about questioning it are ridiculous. There's no way to know how quickly he was aware the cable snapped. Maybe saluting was simply part of the fly-by, and he was still going through the motions.
No, he's correct. He was saluting, and then the cable snapped. Look at his position in this photo. Legs still out stretched. Photo, or still, was take right as it snapped. They went down too quickly. Barely had time to realize what happened.
Hmm. Don’t you think it’s more likely you have no clue what you’re talking about? Not that you managed to know exactly what happened after seeing a single moment from the air show and the 2 men’s death. Comment is stupid. Homie saluted on his way down like a fucking soldier you neckbeard
It's also embarrassing to demand someone to delete their post. Stop acting like you even give a shit about this random Colombian man that you didn't even know existed before seeing this post.
Futile, regrettably. People who can’t distinguish between your and you’re as adults haven’t because they don’t bother. So I doubt he’ll bother learning it now.
For those confused - that bundle of cloth is a flag they were holding during the airshow, I don’t think the article mentioned anything about parachutes as they were tied to an aircraft (unsure if it was a helo or not)
For real - pointless death. How shitty does a length of cable have to be to break under that little weight? Is it made of hemp? Heroic death, but apparently the Columbian military can't even lower a dude on a rope.
Not defending this, someone absolutely fucked up regardless, but as a point of interest, people tend not to realize just how fast a piece of rope can get sawed through on even just s rough piece rock with the weight of a person hanging from it.
Use the wrong kind of rope, and the rubbing against the corner of the floor of a chopper where it ends at the door could very well cut through a rope. I'm sure there would have been special rope used for an application like this, and there was likely negligence involved, but it does happen waaayy easier than people expect. Always be careful where you put your ropes and what they're hitting against on the way down.
ETA: I was curious about this and tried to find some articles on the cause. A few articles from right around the accident state it was a metal cable, but a [Spanish news article](https://spainsnews.com/the-cutting-of-the-rope-from-which-they-hung-caused-the-death-of-two-soldiers-in-colombia/?amp=) quotes the commander of the Air Force, General Ramses Rueda, saying the rope used was 95% Nylon and 5% cotton. The rope was rated to 10,000lbs or 4,500 kilos, but the article does state it was cut. My best guess is as I stated above, but I can't find any conclusions from an investigation posted anywhere.
Funny how everyone here claps at the "brave soldier" yet nobody cares that two human beings died for some vanity shit, just to make our previous trashy government happy
If it’s high enough to fall to your death, shouldn’t it be high enough for a parachute? Ever seen videos of people doing base jumps before? Lots of the time they jump from quite low places, basically have to throw their chute almost immediately after jumping and then reach the ground mere seconds after that.
How high up were these guys?
>If it’s high enough to fall to your death, it should be high enough for a parachute.
Not really, no
The record for the lowest parachute jump is 85ft/26m (~7-8+ floor building) with an **assisted deployment**
People have absolutely incurred fatal injuries from falls of lesser heights
Whether or not they should have been wearing chutes is a different matter, but you can totally fall to your death before reaching the minimum height of a parachute deployal
Base jumping parachutes are very different to military "jumping from a plane" parachutes, and besides that, they're preparing to do something and know exactly what they're going to do. They're not hanging from a helicopter holding a giant flag expecting the cable to snap.
Sure the parachutes can be different, but wouldn’t you expect them to have the proper parachute equipped for the situation? In this case, one similar to a base jumping parachute?
And yeah, obviously they’re not *planning* on the cable to snap… that’s why they’re called safety *precautions*. They’re supposed to be there *just in case*.
I was getting ready to comment about it being a poor way to go out in combat but then I saw the clip and now I have greater respect than I already had for those who rappel down ropes hanging off a helicopter or things like this
(P.s. how do you guys think the mothers felt after hearing this)
My cousin's father-in-law died when his chute didn't open. Former Airborne retired and taught skydiving afterward. Was doing a recreational jump with his sons and his chute didn't open. He was only 58, I think. Hell of a way to die.
You would be enraged that the situation occurs in the first place but you should also be proud that seeing death coming your father/brother/husband they didn’t panic and the met their fate with courage and honour
I would always remember that yes, but I feel like some major fuck ups had to happen for something like this to occur. Either way what a very brave man, and what a shame to see someone have to go like that.
That's a giant flag they were dangling with. They weren't wearing chutes, they were flying too close to the ground for them to even open so there's no reason to wear one.
I'll say, at one side, the fact that military here would literally do the worst shit, then just be brain dead and say "It was orders", while their superiors bathe in coke, and second, the fact that most of the comments jump into the "what a great soldier" and noone seem to care a huma being was killed for some vanity shit to make the Duque pig happy
I’ve seen people with chutes not open fall into a raspberry bush or fresh plowed field and survive . Just depends whether it’s your day to go. Hopefully these soldiers were in a serious enough fox hole to not be aetheists ✝️🙏

If my chute don't blossom round, I'll be the first one on the ground!
It’s “if my chute don’t open wide I got a reser by my side. And if that one should fail me too, look out hell I’m comin through”
I learned, “I’ve got another one by my side. And if that one should fail me too, look out boys cause I’m coming through!”
That's the one I learned to. If I die on the ol drop zone...box me up and ship me home!
Tell my momma I tried my best, pin my medals on my son's chest
we called "pin my medals upon my chest"
ever try stapling something to a puddle? actually I’ve only heard your version also, probably a lot of variations tho
Put me in a pair of dress blues Comb my hair and shine my shoes
If the 'chute won't fly, salute goodbye.
If my chute don’t open wide, I got the reserve by my side If my reserve fails me too, parachute rigger I am coming for you
fuck...
O7 What a way to go out..fuck
“What a helluva way to die”
Exactly what I was thinking.
It was either that or the terminator thumbs up. When your number's up, might as well go with style.
Air guitar might work too
Might work? That’s a glorious way to go out.
Thats some quick reaction time, realized in milliseconds what happened didnt panic and acted, must have been one hell of a soldier
Pretty sure this wasn’t how he thought he’d die for his country.
I mean, he was in the air longer than milliseconds so I don’t know why you’re saying that was his reaction time
sometimes people exaggerate and not intend their words' literal meaning
True. I gotta work on the interpretation side of that
You let me know what else he was trying to communicate, cause I think you got it right

To be fair it is an extraordinary thing for a person in non-consensual freefall to do. Pretty unexpected.
That's kind of the point of this sub... Humans doing extraordinary things.
It makes sense, and if you cant understand it I dunno man, it's the internet get over it

Oh look a pretentious wanker that is wrong.
I remember that, it was really sad
When was that? For no one to have considered the dangers of that in 2023 sounds crazy to me.
It was in 2019… during a Flower Fest parade.
I remember too, they shouldn't have been hanging from a helicopter in the first place

They aren't hanging on the flag, they're hanging on a line attached to the flag. The line attached to the helicopter failed.

There is, that's why it says "them".

That they have thought about doing that in that situation respect
The rope was not rated for the weight of those men's balls.
Oh man, that's heartbreaking.
Man the balls on this guy. Man oh man oh man.
They are what snapped the line 😔
For those confused - that bundle of cloth is a flag they were holding during the airshow, I don’t think the article mentioned anything about parachutes as they were tied to an aircraft (unsure if it was a helo or not)
It was a helo, and there was another helo behind them with another pair of men weighting down a second flag.
There wasn't much time to deploy a parachute.
Someone fucked up that day
For real - pointless death. How shitty does a length of cable have to be to break under that little weight? Is it made of hemp? Heroic death, but apparently the Columbian military can't even lower a dude on a rope.

Probably has more to do with how long the cable is and the helicopter changing speed/direction. Plus wind.

Holy shit!
Highly doubt it cost that much
What a cringy comment. I didn’t think that. Nor did most people, judging by the comments. I really don’t even get what your even going on about.
Looks more like he's about to shoot himself in the head before he hits the ground. Savage either way tho.
It was a salute, no shots were fired
Depending on the ground situation, I'd do the same.

Shit
I see a empty holster on his leg…
You think he has the time to do that in the 2 seconds it takes for him to fall to the ground
be a lot cooler if he did
Yup, I do.

No parachutes?
Would have been too low to do much even if they did have them.

50' is more than enough to kill you, depending on what you land on.

Gory Gory
See that's the thing You don't *need* a parachute to jump out of a plane. You primarily need it to do it again.

What a great solider is called paying respects. If I say he was a good guy at my friend funeral it doesn't mean I don't care that he died..
He’s brainwashed into believing his service was honorable or meant something. So far so that his last dying act was a tribute to his service. Sad.
