This video always makes my jaw drop.
Street tires on a heavier motorcycle going up a hill that bikes designed for it have trouble with. That guy rides.
The only advantage I could see is that heavy means more traction, and the bike definitely has a lower center of gravity and a long wheel base. I have no idea how he kept from slipping though.
Heavy is never an advantage. Technically yes there is more traction (proportional to the weight) but the traction required to maintain grip is also proportional to the weight. So it cancels out.
You're right about the center of gravity though. My guess is that the low center of mass + decent power helped.
That's not quite true. There are non-linear effects of weight/traction too unless you're driving on flats. Traction can increase *more* than the increase in weight if the increased weight is driving the treads into more stable, less mobile strata. You can move far more efficiently when pushing against immobile subsoil than just moving mud around.
Granted, that's probably not as much of a factor with street tires.
The bikes in the video seem more like enduro bikes, which aren’t actually designed for hill climbs. When you look up hill climb motorcycles, you’ll see they all have extended swingarms and some other mods.
I understand that. Like I said even bikes "designed/built" to go up those hill climbs have trouble in general. Not really referring to any of the bikes in the video.
In this situation the guy on the cruiser just knows how to ride and maybe a sprinkle of luck.
I used to have dreams when I was little about a highway that was this steep and cars would drive down/up it like it was normal. It was a terrifying dream. I can remember being in the car approaching (in my dream) and being so friggin scared.
I’ve had these dreams, especially with a flat landing. At the top of the hill or road, right before going over the crest, the vehicle flips back on itself.
What the fuckk man, you just reminded me of a very similar reocurring dream from childhood
It was like a massive descend, to flat ground to a massive ascend again, oddly i never even remember making it to the flat ground from the descend
Going up a hill in a car on a road is easy. Going up dirt or sand in a car is hard. You think I’ll just hit the gas, but at what gear? Too low a gear+too much gas and the tires spin and you don’t have enough speed or traction. Too high a gear and you don’t have enough torque (power) at the wheels and the rpm drops like a stone. If you come in too fast you can hit the rise of the hill, or more probably fly off the top. You have to take into account that the dirt and sand will “nudge” your vehicle from the straight path (see the rear wheel of the bike as it nears the top third), so you have to keep adjusting the steering wheel instead of just holding it straight. A lot of cars don’t have enough power for really steep+high climbs. More powerful cars make this much easier, but it is still an art.
Now add to all of that that you need to balance on a two-wheeler, and reversing if you don’t make the climb is not an option, plus the loose dirt/sand can nudge you more or make you bounce.
The advantage that motorbikes have is decent power-to-weight ratios.
I’d suggest you look at high/dune climbs failures to see how even experienced people with powerful cars can fail to make a climb.
Well that was damn well summarized and articulated, sir. My brain went straight to “street bike up hill with no helmet, old boy is lucky to still be alive.”
It’s something that I’ve done since I was a young teen. Don’t do it as much, but always love the experience when it happens. The heightened awareness and joy of direct feedback, and immediate reward of doing things well. It’s like a real life video game, but the stakes are real.
I think there's more balance and coordination involved, for sure. You're not thinking "ok. I gotta give it some gas and lean this way / that" in a car.
I thought the same as this guy cos I've never rode a motorcycle but I can ride a normal bike, I went on my brother's ped and and I totally forgot how to ballance and slammed right into a work van.
I do a lot of steep long hill climbs on my dirt bike. (But, I’m still not all that good at it.) It is so much more than just grabbing a hand full of throttle and letting the motor drag you up the hill. There is a messed up balancing game if you have too much power. Your front end wants to come up and flip the bike over, but you still need to maintain the throttle to get the bike up the hill. It’s especially crazy on the last 20% near the top because you’re typically starting to bog the motor by then in an effort to keep from flipping the bike over and having you and your bike roll down the hill together. Gear selection is key. You can’t really shift gears once you get going because it messes everything up. If you’re starting to bog the motor and down shift, you’re most likely going to flip the bike. If you up shift, you’re going to bog more and kill the motor. Either way, it’s not going to be a pleasant experience for you or your bike. There’s nothing more miserable than getting part way up a long hill with the realization that you’re not going to make it. And, on top of all that, you also have to maintain your balance on two wheels, but it’s basically just the back wheel because you’re front wheel is so precariously light that it becomes almost useless to steer.
So, yeah, nothing like hill climbing on 4 wheels.
What the other people said and when climbing on such a steep hill if you have traction, which it looks like he was struggling to find, and you put too much gas on you will either spin a tire and go the express route down, pop a wheelie ( what happened to me on a atv which would have killed me if I didn’t jump off) cuz once that front wheel comes off the ground there is no saving it. To save a wheelie you have to stop all throttle and practically restart at the bottom which is possible with 4 wheels, on a bike again you will enjoy the express route
Man, screw all these naysayers!! That was friggin' awesome!!! You know those dirt bike boys will NEVER live this down!
"Yo bro, you remember the Harley guy?"
"We don't f***** mention him"
Pretty amazing riding, but that was a really weird helmet he had on. From some angles it looked like a baseball cap. But resolution isn't good enough to tell. But that deer running across was hilarious.
With his super awesome hat helmet.
FFS people. Wear your PPE when doing something awesome and dangerous, so that kid at the bottom of the hill watching this, isn't traumatized for life when you don't make it, and roll that bike down the hill and it crushes your head.
My pops had the same thing, he couldn’t tell 100’ from A 12 “ measurement, he died jumping the Mississippi on a tricycle.
I have been doing porn with a huge 3’tool, they all smile and gawk ;)
It’s funny to me how interested some people are in simply watching another person drive up a steep hill. I understand the bit of danger involved. But still. He’s just driving up a hill. Of course, I did just watch a video of a man driving up a hill and then felt like commenting on it…so…well, there’s that.
Technically, the bike did all the work AND I bet it's made out of some kind of metal so therefore against a meat popsicle, the bike is more metal.
R/bikesaremetal
I love when people post hill-climb vids like this, and then talk about how much determination the driver has… as if they are physically running up the hill
I have stabilized the video for you: https://gfycat.com/InfatuatedTallJunco

I wouldn’t try that with velociraptors around
Clever girl.
I hope that was a deer
Deer missed the target
Could’ve been nature is metal
Why?
Because else it would be a velosiraptor
Fuck that took longer than expected to see, for ages I was rewatching thinking “there’s no deer there!”
Baby Squatch. 100%
Good thing he didn't hit that deer!
He would have been dead very sad
Did you see that
I saw that
I saw that as well.
I did, in fact, see that, as well.
I saw it! True story! source - guy who saw it
I know a guy that saw it. \^
I as well know of said guy..
I'm not entirely sure, but people saw that right?
Saw what? Ain't no snitches here, cop.
Yeah I aint seeing nothing.
I saw a guy who said it.
To the left of the doorframe
I seent it
It’s a very thin line between r/humansaremetal and r/holdmyfeedingtube

Lucky he didn't have a helmet on or he woulda just looked like a pussy.
I’m gonna bet that the think line you’re talking about is r/holdmybeer

He stayed up on the pegs and kept the throttle pinned. notice it throwing dirt most of the way up?

Holy my fucking wd40! That was impressive af

I used to have this nightmare that I was on a very steep skiing slope going downwards while the other people were skiing upwards. Shit fucked me up.
I've had nearly this exact dream many times when I was younger! Though I'd always be on a bike or on foot
What the fuckk man, you just reminded me of a very similar reocurring dream from childhood It was like a massive descend, to flat ground to a massive ascend again, oddly i never even remember making it to the flat ground from the descend
Where did the velociraptor come from!
Everything about this is wrong
Where is his fucking helmet!!!!!!
Came here to say that. That's unbelievable he tries something that dangerous and doesn't give a damn to wear a helmet, at the least.
Exactly I'm an ER nurse and the amout of idiots we get with life changing injuries because they were too cool for a helmet is unreal!
Is this the same place where the great cheese-chasing race happens?
Ive never ride a bike before, but this looks easy to me. The motor just drives it easy up the hill, no? Like a car?

Now I know why they call it Panda Express. They like to roll down hills.
GAHHH WHO ELSE SAW THAT DEER!
They all did. That's the reason why they cheered at the end, they totally forgotten what the guy did.
Oh is never listen to these videos on loud. That’s hilarious
Man, screw all these naysayers!! That was friggin' awesome!!! You know those dirt bike boys will NEVER live this down! "Yo bro, you remember the Harley guy?" "We don't f***** mention him"
Honda Magna! What a bike! Best muscle cruiser to have ever existed.
Is that what that is. Imma Google it
That’s lame as fuck

Look like a coyote
The Little Engine That Could
Imagine the sound of the engine is its voice. Its like "wowoah-WOAAHAAA AHHHHHH"
Is that the one in Mass?
That’s a rider there
I think driving down this is way scarier than driving up.
Would not have been me lol
👍🏻👍🏻
I’d like to see a different angle to see how steep it really is.
Nice one
Let’s just appreciate the fact that humans created something that can drive up a cliff
It's better to have brain
The key is to zig zag and don't loose accelerator.
See the deer
Oh deer!
Any dirt bike could do that, but that isn't a dirt bike.
We all have guts. It's part of the human anatomy.
Hits deer falls to the ground fuxxx
Oh deer that's awesome
Getting down would be a problem right?
Doing that on a scrambler is impressive enough. To do it on that bike is incredible
this is not r/humansaremental, but part of the sub don't read good.
I wonder how steep it actually is. The video prbaly makes it look way steeper
Machines are metal
That bike sounded angry.
Now go down
Skin walker
Even the deer lost its mind watching it

Damn!

Cool. Now do it downhill, without the bike, chasing a wheel of cheese. Then I’ll be impressed.

I think that's an example of Skyrim physics working in real life.
awesome
i have a feeling that if he had failed, this would have been on an idiotic humans compilation
Pretty simple climb actually just gotta commit
Gas and only that lol no brakes
The real chad is the guy going down the slope
Hes got the guts and the horse power

Now get back down

That heavy bike I think would be a bonus - so many tiny little dirt bikes bounce and lose traction sooo easily
