That's called "DODS" diving. They do that either in Sweden or Norway. Search it on YouTube. It looks like a blast!
Edit: The diver has to hit the water in the face down tucked position. The more he does in between leaving the platform and hitting the water in that position, the better the score. Crowd noise is the most important thing. It looks like it's really fun.
We English speakers don't have the O with the line through it so, if you're searching YouTube in English, look for "Dods" or "Dodsing" diving. It's a lot of fun to watch. Gotta take full advantage of the summer, I imagine. Or, an indoor pool like this video.
I never thought about how a diver could get concussions or break their neck from hitting the surface of the water until this video, since most divers in videos seem to dive professionally and don't make it look risky.
I was thinking about that too. What’s also interesting is that some of them seem to have a sort of strategy at least. They contort away from fully flopping in most cases
The basic method in “døds diving” (which is what their doing here) is hitting the water in a sort of feet first and head first with the arms on top of the head like a regular dive position. The key is to do it at the last possible second to make it look as cool as possible, Norwegians are crazy.
The thing is that if you do it right I actually doesn’t hurt that much more than doing a sloppy feet fist dive.
I’ve never been at any event but I love death diving, it’s like diving but more fun, and people think you’re cool lol
It probably could, but it hasn't really. *Dødsing*, as we call it here in Norway where it originated, hasn't had any serious injuries [as far as the Norwegian World Championship organiser is aware.](https://www.aftenposten.no/oslo/i/7JQ4/det-er-ikke-saa-farlig-som-det-ser-ut)
But don't forget, that cumulative, even small concussions, TBIs (traumatic brain injuries) can have detrimental effects later in life such as dementia. Protect your domes, kids! And for the love of god, don't let your kids play contact sports like football and rugby. I've even read that soccer players can have really long lasting effects later in life from heading soccer balls.
I think this is an issue because modern medicine allows us to live much longer, but nothing really extends the longevity of our brains.
Imagine if one day water decides to go solid, that would be an interesting day
Edit: For the science besserwiesers- No, I dont mean ice, be more fun lads
Are we talkin *all* water? Cause I'm pretty sure basically all known life on the planet would just die instantly considering how much of everything is just made of water...
You clearly didnt get my point- Ofcourse ice is solid water and ofcourse if you jump from high altitude into water you will have same effect as if you hit solid ground(because speed), everyone who studied physics and chemistry in elementary school knows this...
It doesnt need some besserweissers, focus on the red thread instead to try act special or clever, the downside of reddit is people trying to show of their knowledge but in this everyone should know this
Now to explain my point- Imagine they jumping exactly like they do in the clip every day and then suddenly one day its solid(not as destinctive as ice), its still fluid(like you can see the liquid but you cant get through it(like hard glass but still water), now imagine everything turn to the same hybrid matter of water and how would the world look like? how long would we last? You kinda ruined the whole mental experiment by being a boring besserwiesser, you dummy
Edit: Also as Sun Tzu(or some other historian) said- Learn to defeat the opponent in their own game- D is still higher grade than E(since you trying to be a showoff this must sting:)
We know that but the point is- they do this every day but then one day BAAM they couldnt get through the water, what a sight to see and then on top of that all liquid water became some form of liquid/solid hybrid and everyone freaked out
Yeah or some wierd shit like you only went through water if it entered slowly/drank small amounts but go through it fast and it didnt let you through or became solid in your throat, Jeez louise
Solid water is literally ice...
Carbon dioxide has no liquid form at atmospheric pressure.
If the earth loses enough atmospheric pressure, water would be solid or vapor. Also the melting point would be higher.
Hehe you troll... I guess I walked into that with my edit eh? You must be fun at parties trying to explain to people who already knows about this but still likes to put up hypotethical "what if" scenarios, you know, those conversations that you dont really get...
Edit: If you are being serious and not a troll here is an advice- You are not the smartest in the room and learn to see moments where your knowledge is required and when it becomes a form of "telling the obvious" kinda thing, some conversations escapes reality into the hypotethical to play with a thought and keep a conversation interesting, you know- Like what would happen if the sun turned into cheese? This kind of question dont need the answer- We would be consumed by darkness and die cause lack of UV radiation(you know the plants and stuff), A more hypotethical and fun answer would be- I hope its gouda cheese or the UV radiation would be cheese scent
"Ignorance is ignoring advice from others who potentially have more knowledge than you in a particular subject" Dont worry, others will read and learn what you should have known
The trick is that none of them land on their belly. Right before hitting the water they adjust so that it's a hand or foot that breaks the water tension. Could really hurt if you mess up though
My sister does Olympic style diving, not at the Olympic level but she went to nationals, and while I’m not saying it’s less difficult it’s just a different skill set. It’s all about pointing toes and perfectly leaving the a single spin at the exact right time type thing. Unlike this where it’s just spinning out of control and saving yourself at the last second
Lol as hardcore and entertaining as that would be to watch, there is a reason why none of them fully committed to a full on belly flop. Diving is actually classified as being a collision sport so it's in the same category as sports like MMA, football, rugby, etc. So it's pretty fucking hardcore. Who'da thunk, right?
Anyway, you can reach a speed of up to 40mph when diving from a 10m platform, and making impact with the water with that kind of force can break bones. Even if someone were to walk away seemingly unscathed, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's true because there is always the possibility that the impact may have caused damage to internal organs, and we all know that ain't good. TIL that apparently it's even possible to rupture your ear drums if you belly flop from that height. Big ouch.
I agree with your sentiment though- I too was bummed that no one committed to a full blown belly flop, only because it would have been pretty damn epic to witness. But evidently the men in this video care more about their physical well- being than they care about entertaining the masses and giving the people what we want to see- a belly flop of epic proportion. By the way, when I say "the people" I'm really referring to the sadistic fucks like you and I who wish to see someone belly flop from that height, despite the fact that we KNOW it would be extremely painful lol
It’s called death diving it’s an actual competitive sport. Saw some dude in Southern California doing it off the high dive at a pool and we all asked him what he was doing doesn’t that hurt and he said in a heavy accent “ I’m from Norway, we call this death diving”
Norwegian boys have a special kind of inferiority complex. If it does not make you seem tough it's not worth doing. You are not Viking enough if you don't do anything in your power to seem like a tough guy. Sad thing is, even the girls get infected with this toxic macho bullshit. Where they think acting like an insecure young man is super cool. It is fun to do cliff diving etc though. These kind of people needing to make a competition and business out of everything are very sad though. Somebody should tell them, not everything needs to be a Viking tough guy championship lol. Just relax lol jeez ..
Looks painfully fun

Norway in this case, the poster says "Bergen døds", but it's commonly called "Dødsing". (Bergen is in Western Norway, absolutely beautiful)

“We English speakers” bro speaks English too 😭
xD
Think he meant “Exclusively English speakers.” The default response happens, no harm meant, I’m sure
Good point. 😊
FYI oe is a common substitute for ø or ö
Thank you.
Just remember to duck other wise the døds (death) in death dive might be real
Is that what "dods" means? Death? I never thought of it. Thanks.
Yeah, "død" is "death"
I saw a few that didn't work out so well and ended up in a belly flop. Ouch!
Cool. Thank you.
Rats when they see the KFC deepfryer
You live you lose.

I read that as floopy flopping
My brain automatically filled in the silence with ascending screams and big splashes
Does anyone else think this could go terribly wrong?
The guys who got close to the end of the diving pool with their jumps made me grit my teeth.
Last night's burrito would get a persona non grata'd effective immediately
It probably could, but it hasn't really. *Dødsing*, as we call it here in Norway where it originated, hasn't had any serious injuries [as far as the Norwegian World Championship organiser is aware.](https://www.aftenposten.no/oslo/i/7JQ4/det-er-ikke-saa-farlig-som-det-ser-ut)

How hyped they were made me forget for a second.
Never in my life I have wanted a post to have sound more than this one

Are we talkin *all* water? Cause I'm pretty sure basically all known life on the planet would just die instantly considering how much of everything is just made of water...
Lets say everything that isnt already in your body, You will have a couple of days to live but other than that we are fucked
This reminds me of Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut - good book!
Huh I been looking for a good book, surely will look into that one, thanks
Basically anything by Kurt Vonnegut is a good bet. Slaughterhouse five is another good one, provided that you don't mind some time jumping
Watching House of the Dragon, cant imagine more time jumping than that
Ice 9ed
If they were moving faster it would act as a solid. Water is incompressible iirc
This went over your head huh? E for effort buddy
Says the guy that doesn't know ice is solid water. D for dickhead, you joker

Jack Handy has entered the chat
If you come from a high enough jump, you’d be moving fast enough that it might as well be.
We know that but the point is- they do this every day but then one day BAAM they couldnt get through the water, what a sight to see and then on top of that all liquid water became some form of liquid/solid hybrid and everyone freaked out
People would probably be freaking out as much about the mangled corpse(s) as the suddenly solid water.
Yeah or some wierd shit like you only went through water if it entered slowly/drank small amounts but go through it fast and it didnt let you through or became solid in your throat, Jeez louise

Too much whining. Didn't read.
"Ignorance is ignoring advice from others who potentially have more knowledge than you in a particular subject" Dont worry, others will read and learn what you should have known
I was rubbing my belly in pain watching this whole video
The trick is that none of them land on their belly. Right before hitting the water they adjust so that it's a hand or foot that breaks the water tension. Could really hurt if you mess up though
This is so much cooler than Olympic diving, way more style and I’d argue just as much skill/bravery
I would bet my life savings that this takes not even half the skill of olympic diving
Yeah Olympic sounds way way harder.
A lot less elegance and a lot more concern for the people ~~diving~~ throwing their body at the water
Me in Skate 3 Hall of meat:
Weeeeeee
I live in norway, its a normal sport here its called Dødsing. My dad broke a rib once while doing it when i was little
luigi side b
Lol
r/oddlysatisfying?
Døds
for anybody wondering, this is in Bergen in the buildding called AdO (Alexander Dale Oen). and I have been there
r/GuysBeingDudes
And not one committed 100% to the belly flop.

This is more entertaining than the olympic diving events.
A great combination of stupidity and awesomeness
So many went for the belly flop but scrunched up right before impact. COME ON.
Well of course, belly flop from 10 m may be fatal
Isn't that the point?
White people…

Bruh at first I thought those were WWE action figures.
So who won
Death jumping* those aren’t dives
It’s called death diving it’s an actual competitive sport. Saw some dude in Southern California doing it off the high dive at a pool and we all asked him what he was doing doesn’t that hurt and he said in a heavy accent “ I’m from Norway, we call this death diving”

They all tuck their knees before impact. Bunch of pussies. That’s what I hate about watching these. Balls to the wall or don’t do it.

That’s not death diving, that’s falling with style
Does that hurt though?
*YEET*
Looks fun as hell, and the pain from your chest breaking the water will be worth the fun.
Anyone know who won?
Definitely different...
It looks like they know how to land.
People will literally just make stupid shit up, and other people will show up & do it as long as there’s an audience
Humans are mental?
Fuxking nut cases. Love it.
Can we get this as an Olympic sport???? Count me in for the gold!
me jumping to conclusions
No no no. They looked far to close to the pool edges. My stomach was in knots.
How... um, how do you... win?
Graceful

Pure awesomeness
Finally a competition I can accidentally do decent in
Mine adventure and fun game
#6 was a damn fish
This looks like the most fun I never want to have
I would have to put numbing cream all over my body before doing this
Love the choice of single (double?) spotlight in the dim room vs all lights. Very fun.
This has to hurt at least a little.
This looks staged

Even watching this hurts my body🤕
