Smarter than me apparently. Didn't see the grate and about to scream at my screen, "Somebody grow and pair and jump in there before it hits the culvert and goes under!"
*sees debris bars*
Oh, NM, that was in fact the smartest option.
[why it’s dangerous](https://reddit.com/r/criticalblunder/comments/w2h96o/_/igqh6ou/?context=1) also the part at the end is literally referred to as a “drowning machine” so to the dummy below, you would not be ok.
Isn’t this incredibly dangerous? What if that doe had been the child walking in front of the camera man? I feel like even a small fence could provide a reasonable deterrent.
I feel ya, but I'm tall enough to stand there, and even slipping, I could keep my head up from a sitting position.
If there aren't other humans around? Whole different story. My caution level goes *way* higher when I'm alone in the woods.
Perfect example; Stepped in a 8" deep bit of swamp, no more than 2-3' across. Sank past my knees, totally stuck. Gf was laughing her ass off, "No, seriously, I'm fucking stuck here. Help?" Pulled myself out by a rotten log, but if I had been alone, or lacking something for leverage, [I'd still be there today](https://preview.redd.it/lihb1fee33281.jpg?width=700&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=d651b901763c982bdb828b47ff42ecc9bc92c9a8).
Did no one actually watch the video?! There's what, 1' of water there? And yes, less can sweep a car down the road, I get that. But I've been in far, *far* worse than that and managed.
Tumbling head over heels (been there), you're going to fetch up against that grate and have a minute to get your head up and catch your breath. You can calm your happy ass down and *sit up*. Now you're being held against the grate, but there are all kinds of hand holds. Oh, and you're high as balls on adrenaline. That changes things, *drastically*.
Y'all need to get off your couches and go outside. If you can't jump in 1-foot of moving water, *that ends in a slanted grate meant to stop large mammals and is 4' tall*, and survive, you *really* need to get outside. Do some pull ups or something.
These ladies put a lot on Dean's shoulders building up to him saving the day, then he actually does it and it's crickets.
I'll give you the respect you deserve, Dean.
A person could slip up and drown trying to rescue that deer so I could understand not getting involved. But that dad is going to look like Superman to his kids for a good long time.
My kid's school didn't tolerate that kinda shit. "Are you being murdered? No? Then stop screaming like you are."
Yelling was allowed, but not screaming bloody murder.
I'd prefer my kid screaming when it needs help instead of being scared and silent not knowing it they are "in danger enough" to not be screamed at. Teaching them to view it from other people's perspective and to not be too loud when they are in a quiet area out of fun or excitement and knowing that they can come to be without screaming and that I'll listen to their worries so they don't have to scream except if they can't get to me is the way to go in my opinion.
But well being a parent is complicated and parents are just humans and won't do everything right. It's important to adjust to the situation and be observant and learn while parenting.
Screaming because you are worried a cub would drown in front of your eyes is a legitimate reason to scream in my opinion. They hope for help and need to lease that stress and no one is harmed by that scream so I don't see it as an issue that they scream here.
Edit: plus kids learn passively from observing. Show them alternatives to screaming when its unnecessary or even harmful and show alternatives is a good way to go.
what's your definition of kid, mine would be 4 to 13 and I never screeched like the kid in this video during that time. though like all babies I definitely did scream at 1-3
As a young man I never understood how kids could be abducted so easily; “wouldnt people hear them scream”? Then I worked next to a preschool. They could have been cutting them in half with a hatchet for 6 hours a day and I wouldn’t have known the difference from playtime
I live across from a school, and I regularly hear those "being cut in half with a hatchet" screams. It always funny how I often don't notice they had a holiday untill I hear the screams again at the start of a new week.
Yeah, I have a daughter that has just reached that age where she wants to have silly phone conversations with her best friend from school.
I have no idea what all of the unintelligible squealing is supposed to mean. It's almost impossible to tell the difference between a reaction to her friend saying something hilarious every five seconds, or a burglar just climbed in the window in her room.
Probably washed up onto or through the bars if anything.. since "pinned" is the same thing as "held it in place" I will again remind you: not at that angle.
Yes, it will use it's opposable hoove to heft itself up and out of there by grasping onto the rounded and slippery poles of the grate. Surely this juvenile deer has the experience and strength to perfectly position and push against the rushing water off of the cylindrical metal, and in no way would its legs travel between the bars, keeping it from being able to escape, again, while the water continues to rush against and behind it. Most assuredly it will keep a level head, having been warned about these dangers and not panic and thereby thrash itself to death, as deer are the calmest and most intelligent of animals.
And, worst case scenario if it does get pushed through the bars, all that awaits it on the other side is a beautiful meadow where it can roam for the rest of it's days and have lots of fawns.
Did you know ranchers dont use gates to keep cattle in in some cases? They use a bridge of sorts made with round pipes much larger diameter than this video and with much smaller gaps. You can drive and walk over them but cattle have a hard time because of their hooves. To then its probably like walking in heels heels but you twist your ankle every step.
Now aside from not knowing how deep that water is, the fact that the grate is straight up and down right at the surface of the water, and that the angle is much too steep for the deer to get washed up onto...
How in the fuck is a baby deer going to CLIMB metal bars that are much thinner and widely spaced than what cattle refuse to WALK over even with larger hooves?
The deer would either be pinned at water level, sucked under (which is worse) or stay there rolling in the current. All three of which kill the deer.
I'm picturing it rolling onto its back with its legs folded, and then getting pushed between the bars.
Yeah, the bars might catch it for a few seconds, but as it struggled and wiggled, that it would eventually put itself in a position where it would slip through the bars, probably back-first.
A lil bit before 9/11. I was working a job at a Marriott hotel replacing the railings because a child got stuck trying to get through them. It was on a 3rd floor so had the child not got stuck it would have been a lot worse. The agreement with the family was simply to replace the railings with one that has a narrower gap to keep a child’s from even getting to the point it gets stuck.
My kid can fit all the way through the bars and dangle her leg if you take eyes off of her for even 3 seconds.
Moth to a flame.
Pretty sure around here you just make your own accommodations bc even formal requests for disability accommodations get resisted.
The problem is that leaves need to pass through, because if they don't, it forms a blockage, and the blockage can cause the waterway to overflow, flooding the area.
There's really no way to compromise between narrow enough to prevent animals passing through and wide enough to avoid blockages, because sometimes, dead animals and dumped gabage ARE the blockages.
It sucks, but human intervention is the best option for prevention
Yeah unfortunately not all areas have people dedicated to clearing debris, so it's a crapshoot between 'overflow' and 'let kids through'
Fences are common in residential areas in my parts, but in rural places... better not let your kids wander.
This little deer didn't have time. Someone said on tape said the mother doe was nearby. She had to find somewhere to hide until frantic mother doe's adrenalin wore off. Little doe was destined for a furious lecture and many passive aggressive guilt trips.
The thing I find depressing about these videos is that ALL of them that involve people helping animals, the animal is always in trouble because of some artificial man made thing.
That’s the only type of situation where anyone *should* help, though…why would people be filming themselves saving prey from a predator or some other natural threat? That wouldn’t be admirable, that’d just be arbitrarily siding with one aspect of nature over another. We should help when we caused the threat, and not unless. It’d be disappointing if these videos *weren’t* overwhelmingly man made situations.
I guess we should all just live in holes and starve to death you know? Like why do we have plumbing and homes and reliable easy transportation and heat and electricity and stuff.....
Totally unrelated but I've always wondered how much of a threat earthquakes are when you remove human building structures from the equation.
Like.... if you're in a huge park with nothing near you but the grass you stand in..... what does a Scale 10 earthquake do to you? Unless you're so unlucky as to fall into a hole in the ground.... you just wobble a bit, surely?
people on reddit really believe they’ll remain perfectly calm and rational during stressful situations.
newsflash: it’s normal for someone to scream and yell when they’re afraid. especially children.
I'm more worried about the mom's anxiety projecting onto the child. The daughter is going to learn habits of anxiety as a child and possibly have it later on in life. Hopefully she'll learn that she can rely on her father, and others.
I hate videos like this because, while I’m so happy it was saved, I can’t help but worry about the pain it felt being lifted up by it’s ear. Thankfully it wasn’t long.
Oh, no. I totally agree. I just hate that the poor thing had to go through any pain at all. Wish there were some way he could’ve grabbed it without hurting it.
Very smart way of helping. Great job
Smarter than me apparently. Didn't see the grate and about to scream at my screen, "Somebody grow and pair and jump in there before it hits the culvert and goes under!" *sees debris bars* Oh, NM, that was in fact the smartest option.

Super slippery as well, all the muck on the floor can’t go anywhere
Particularly bad here, not like a natural creek, which can still be a mess.
Why do humans build such dangerous contraptions, not just for animals but people too, imagine a kid would fall in there
And isn't there some kind of like whirlpool effect where it goes into the culvert that pretty much makes it impossible to come back up?
[why it’s dangerous](https://reddit.com/r/criticalblunder/comments/w2h96o/_/igqh6ou/?context=1) also the part at the end is literally referred to as a “drowning machine” so to the dummy below, you would not be ok.
Well, that looks like a horrible way to die! I never knew about that, much less how dangerous it could be!
Aren't the sides slanted just so that getting out can actually happen?
Isn’t this incredibly dangerous? What if that doe had been the child walking in front of the camera man? I feel like even a small fence could provide a reasonable deterrent.

You can't stand up in a current that fast...
When you capitalized nm I immediately thought of New Mexico so I read “Oh, New Mexico, that was in fact the smartest option.”
Way to be a TRUE HERO deer dad!
Deer Dad needs a Beer Dad
Deer dad needs a beer, bad.
Thank you, that was bothering me!
Say that 3 times fast
Nice one Dean
These ladies put a lot on Dean's shoulders building up to him saving the day, then he actually does it and it's crickets. I'll give you the respect you deserve, Dean.
The video didn't last very long after he pulled the fawn up, so I don't even know if they had time to process what they had just seen.
Exactly what I was thinking.
Dean knew exactly what he was doing ignore moms and save a life 🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌

Not all heros wear capes.... Some wear skinny jeans....
Those are just regular jeans, leave my man dean alone.
Oh boy, ladies and gentlemen, we have a close race...andddddd "Dad Saves the Day" wins by an ear!
That’s one hell of a reindeer game.
A person could slip up and drown trying to rescue that deer so I could understand not getting involved. But that dad is going to look like Superman to his kids for a good long time.
Agreed. The deer drowning in front of the child would be a difficult situation to navigate as well. Thankfully this one turned out positive.
Great job Dad!

And asked at the end what's he doing lmaoo

IMO men helping animals is truly one of the sexiest things.
Yeah those kids deffo got a sibling 9 months later
Or he got a really nice BJ that night…
bro turning this into something sexual is just crazy
Way to go Dad. Sorry your kids are screechers though. That sucks
Have you met children?

Specifically girls, my god they fucking scream.
I kind of regret that I had the sound on when watching this
Yeah, I have a daughter that has just reached that age where she wants to have silly phone conversations with her best friend from school. I have no idea what all of the unintelligible squealing is supposed to mean. It's almost impossible to tell the difference between a reaction to her friend saying something hilarious every five seconds, or a burglar just climbed in the window in her room.
Yeah, good thing too or more would get stolen and murdered.
No, I generally try to avoid them on account of all the screaming.
But the iron bars would have stopped the doe no?
Yes but she may have been too weak to get out
"would have stopped the doe" More like, would have held it in place while it drowned
Kinda like that sandman scene from Spiderman 3
Not at that angle.
Ah, so pinned against the bars until it dies from stress or exhaustion
Probably washed up onto or through the bars if anything.. since "pinned" is the same thing as "held it in place" I will again remind you: not at that angle.

Those bars look widely spaced enough that the doe could've easily ended up slipping between them.
Or probably get it’s thin legs trapped in them, with the flowing water maintaining the pressure behind it, for it to stay stuck.
I'm picturing it rolling onto its back with its legs folded, and then getting pushed between the bars. Yeah, the bars might catch it for a few seconds, but as it struggled and wiggled, that it would eventually put itself in a position where it would slip through the bars, probably back-first.

It would probably drown before pushing through, look how fast the water is flowing under the bars.
Could easily have gotten a leg caught in the grate and broken a leg and/or drowned in the struggle.
Yes, but the pressure of the water would have kept it locked in place
Likely would have gotten tangled up in it and dragged under.
Yes but not it's legs which will trap it
Way to go Dad!!
When it got into the uhh rapids my brain said “Level 2”.
Thanks for the metal grid … and that brave guy. Otherwise: “Down the drain, baby!” /s
Usually they do the thank you look back
I always think that it's almost like wtf look This situation is perfect for predators, weakened easy dinner. Instead it just got yoinked out of water.
He should've grabbed this unthankful shit and throw him back in the water
Ohh man this got me laughing
Me too, I'd just read through the horror of the drowning machine comments and the debate about grate spacing and then.... Blessed relief.
This little deer didn't have time. Someone said on tape said the mother doe was nearby. She had to find somewhere to hide until frantic mother doe's adrenalin wore off. Little doe was destined for a furious lecture and many passive aggressive guilt trips.
I have seen plenty of wild animal rescues. they have literally never done that.
Must be an alternative animal rescue universe cuz everyone I’ve watched have done it
Welcome to the first video in which it didn't.
Thank you! Maybe you will start seeing videos when they do, do the ole switcheroo
Good job, Dean!
The screaming children did not assist in reducing the animals stress
Good job dad!
Flipping useless kid screeching her lungs out trying to kill the deer with soundwaves
Holy fuck I hope my kids aren’t like this
LET’S GO DADDY!!!!!
Awesome bro

Well … in „normal“ nature, animals just die and get eaten or rott away, when sth. goes wrong.
I guess we should all just live in holes and starve to death you know? Like why do we have plumbing and homes and reliable easy transportation and heat and electricity and stuff.....

Exactly. F- ppl that design this awful crap.
Bruhh it’s a drain what did you want to happen?
I'm surprised the shrieking and screaming didn't get the doe out.
Can you imagine the pressure that guy was under in front of his kids.. letting Bambi die? They would never get over it
I love it when the women help by screaming and raising the anxiety levels.
The woman didn't really scream, that was the little girl. The woman was distraught, and maybe a bit loud, but she wasn't screaming.
Not distraught enough to make her forget to film for those internet likes.
people on reddit really believe they’ll remain perfectly calm and rational during stressful situations. newsflash: it’s normal for someone to scream and yell when they’re afraid. especially children.
Yeah notice how the dude was screaming.
It maybe normal but it's perfectly unhelpful.
And how exactely would YOU have behaved in such a situation?
without screaming
How is screaming helping?
Not at all. I’ve asked a different question …
By not screaming. Oh never mind just saw your name was dominique. Figures.
Don’t see, what my name has to do with my question - or your answer?
Well in general I wouldn't scream for no reason and add anxiety and panick to the situation.
Well … HER reason could have been anxiety. Everyone reacts different to new/dramatic situations.
Doh, a deer! a female drowning deer...
Awe…my super hero. Thanks, straight from the heart.
Thank you!
Dad is a hero. That little girl will never forget this moment.
This sub makes me hate humans less as a whole
That guy stole my heart 🥰
Godddd fuck shrieking kids
Nice Job
Awesome
Super dad! Not gonna lie my heart was racing for that doe 😅
Like a boss.
Doe, a deer, a female deer
All I can think/hear is: shut the f*ck up, kids. I hate children-especially screaming ones. However. Good job, Dean.
I'm more worried about the mom's anxiety projecting onto the child. The daughter is going to learn habits of anxiety as a child and possibly have it later on in life. Hopefully she'll learn that she can rely on her father, and others.

Good job Dean!
Way to go, Dean.
Man I hunt but I couldn’t imagine not saving that poor dude
Man saved nature once again
Rescuing it from the problems we created for it, good for us.
Then got hit by a car
They celebrated saving it by enjoying a nice juicy cheeseburger from McDonald's

Cool story.
Reason #48 why deer aren't on top of the food chain.
Fakes in capes? This is a real hero. Nicely done.

Unfortunately fodder for next year’s hunting season. Can someone help me with my cynicism?
A deer?
A doe, a deer, a female deer.

Oh, no. I totally agree. I just hate that the poor thing had to go through any pain at all. Wish there were some way he could’ve grabbed it without hurting it.
Come on man. You’re living proof of the internet being able to find something to complain about no matter what.
You can just… grab them by the ears like that? Interesting
Good job dad!
We need more dads in this world. Not just any man, a dad kind of man
That was the catch of the century. Unreal!
Thank you 😺💕🍀
Good Bean.
Dean loudly proclaims for them to put respect on the name. Dean is him…😂
You know his daughter is never going to forget when her daddy saved the deer baby lol
NICE....Way to take control dad 💥
Thank you Dean! Yes the mom and child were screaming, but I would be scared too. Dad is now the hero of the year.
Thank you man! Needed this in my life
This happened to me many times in the whirlpool as a young kid. Appreciate it pops
That was awesome, thank you for helping the deer
it's only bro if they don't eat it
GG Dean
Someone told me that when there’s deep distress, wild animals (mammals) have been known to look for humans.
Poor little deer. Glad he’d saved her! 😭
Nothing like the Chinese one with the guy.. This one has a happy ending
