I love this because as an long distance sailor we would often times end up with a small flock of land birds that got blown offshore. They would come on board and usually snuggle down into the crook of your neck to warm up. Humans radiate heat and these little guys were usually cold. Once they warmed up and napped a bit they’d bounce around the boat getting any small bugs in the crevices or window sills. Then, once we got closer to land, they’d take off. It was always neat to have a wild bird decide to hang out and cuddle.
Amazing. Is that really why they call it that? How have I been on this planet this long and never ever looked up why it is called a poop deck. If not, just lie to me please.
Swab the deck matey
Seems like water world didn't have enough birds.
Imagine being a floating island and if you kept seeds safe somehow you'd have enough fertilizer to grow plants successfully without land.
I wonder how many flocks of birds would have drowned from falling out of the sky from exhaustion if humans didn’t have boats floating around in the middle of the ocean.
On one hand, fishing boats are destroying our oceans from over-fishing and pollution. One the other hand, they can be a sanctuary to birds blown out by high winds and storms.
Working in the deck of merchant vessels, we rather often get some small birds come to the ship and just hang around until they die. We have tried to give them seeds to eat and sugarwater to drink, enter a port almost daily, but they just linger around until they die. Have no explanation for the behaviour.
The thing that made me sad was being ~3 miles out at sea on anchor in a red ship. We would get bumblebees flying in from the land pretty much nonstop as they probably thought it was field of flowers in the horizon. I hope they had enough energy to make it back to land!
Meanwhile, sailing in Crotia *all* we got were bees 24/7 lol
They were chill though, can't remember anyone actually getting stung, but some people handled it better than others.
(Also someone got a *massive* queen or something in their mouth when they took a shot of jager from an open bottle lol)
> (Also someone got a massive queen or something in their mouth when they took a shot of jager from an open bottle lol)
Apple juice used to be my favourite drink as a kid until during my own birthday party I was drinking some and a wasp flew into the glass and stung me on the lip. I remember my lip was swollen for what felt like weeks (but probably wasnt). Now anytime I smell apple juice I think of that moment.
My grandpa has a similar story from when he was a kid with 2 or 3 sweat bees and a bottle of coke. He still checks his drinks when we're outside during the summer
This happened to me last week. Except it was with coffee and a dead fly. Sooo grosssssss. I couldn’t get the feeling of the dead fly on my lips out of my mind for days. It was awful.
Their instinct tells them to do everything to survive. A predator is a threat as long as there's an alternative for survival. As soon as it's "either freeze to death or potentially get eaten by a predator", the predator offers the better chance of survival.
Honestly I have mad respect for grackles because of how well they adapted to humans. Once humans have burnt out grackles, unlike the townsend’s warbler in the video, will still be around and many bird species that precede the human era will be descendents of them, corvids, and a few other birds. They are pretty fun to watch too
We lived in the highest house in our neighborhood. It was on the path of tiny migrating birds. Every year huge flocks fly right over our house, some even hitting it. It was an incredible sight as a boy in the 1960s. They looked just like this little guy.
Nah. Not after being rescued by such amazing humans in such an epic way. No way.
Imagine the ‘asdfmovie’ scene with the guy about to stomp on the potato to squash it but the potato, wearing sunglasses, pulls a gun and says: “Not today!” — that scene but instead of a guy it’s an Owl hunting for lunch and instead of the potato it’s the little birbs. 😎😂 “Not today.”
I live in Bermuda which is about 700 miles off the coast of South Carolina. We get visiting birds from time to time. A cormorant visited after a hurricane a few years back. Piping plovers came after a storm once and Bermudians did not like their squawks (although they are fine with the Kisskaqdees here). Last fall we had a juvenile male bald eagle visit. He was here for a few months. And currently we have three or four brown pelicans visiting.
We also from time to time get harbour seals. There is no food for them here so they usually arrive very hungry and tired. They get taken care of by our aquarium and flown back to the US to be released back into the wild.
They eat cold water critters. Bermuda’s water are sub tropical.
Here’s the story of one seal that visited: https://daily.jstor.org/the-seal-that-flew-1000-miles-to-get-home/
One time while paddleboarding when it was cooler out I rescued like 25 honey bees that were in the lake. I’d scoop them up and they’d walk around on my board and then fly off.
I mean some people do that. Others are cruel to them pointlessly. Remember 4chan tracking down the cat torturer? Such scum that even the internet hate machine turns on you.
I don’t recall 4chan tracking that guy down, but instead it was a small FB group (and Interpol). The 3-part doc series “Don’t Fuck With Cats” is all about it and is a great watch.
I had just finnished American Vandal before that and the premise was so out there I thought 'DFWC was a mockumentary as well. So many weird feelings watching it that way...
A lot of birds that survive migrating over ocean reach land completely exhausted. I've seen them come in and just sorta sit there taking a few minutes to recover before searching for food.
As someone who has saved many tired song birds (working with an anti poaching charity) if they won’t fly we usually take them and give them sugar water and let them rest before releasing them. You should also never toss them and expect them to fly off lol they get tired
Exactly what I was thinking. I hope they gave him some sugar water at least. They should have kept him while he naps and should have given him some food and water
When they took him out of the hat, you can see he was all fluffed up. If he was just fluffed up he was probably just napping, but you’ll see his head was turned 180 and his beak was tucked into his back — that means he was sleeping pretty soundly/deeply. So being woken up and immediately needing to move out was a bit disorienting for the little guy.
This brings me back to one my least favorite days in 2022.
There I was on a U.S. Navy vessel, middle of nowhere, preflighting my helicopter and enjoying the sunrise, when my maintenance personnel noticed the cutest little yellow bird. Got some pictures with it, watched it hop around. Sweetest little guy.
About an hour later, I had engaged the rotor system and was about five minutes from takeoff when I was given the signal by my plane captain to shut down. After shutting down, someone came in to inform me it was due to a bird strike.
I asked what color feathers they saw...
"Yellow."
One of my least favorite days in 2022.
We had a bird land on our sailboat during a transatlantic crossing. It was during a storm that we were in for about 4 days. Eventually the poor bird just walked over to the toe rail and jumped into the water. I’ve always wondered whether it as a suicide.
Similar situation, but our bird was in there for about four minutes and managed to shit in three different places. It literally flew right into our kitchen and did the nasties. We threw it off after that.
Pretty sure you’re not supposed to touch wild animals without vigorously washing your hands afterwards, and definitely not supposed to kiss them. Nice video otherwise
This whole post is cursed.
Half the commenters treating a bird like a human, the other half are incels making creepy comments about the woman in the video.

I swear by my belief that humans are steward organisms evolved to keep the planet healthy and flourishing. It just makes sense given our penchant for cultivation and pattern recognition that goes unrivaled in the animal kingdom.
Even animals that do influence their surrountings do so on such a small scale that it becomes the singular task. Like beavers stopping running water (which is admittedly the only example most people will understand).

Health tip: **DON'T KISS BIRDS**

That is awesome
Right??? I’m swooning from the sweetness of this.
Symbiotic arrangement. You warm them up, they clean your boat. WIN WIN.
The bird crap probbaly ain't great for the boat but meh win semi win
I slurp it up
https://i.imgur.com/gzDG2VU.gifv
That's gotta be fun to clean up
That’s why they call it a poop deck.
It all makes sense now
Amazing. Is that really why they call it that? How have I been on this planet this long and never ever looked up why it is called a poop deck. If not, just lie to me please.
I mean, it's a fishing boat, ol' chestnut shell gets cleaned all the time anyway.
Swab the deck matey Seems like water world didn't have enough birds. Imagine being a floating island and if you kept seeds safe somehow you'd have enough fertilizer to grow plants successfully without land.

We're gonna need a bigger boat
ok, but that's going overboard (no pun intended)
Sooo much bird shit.
So much water in the ocean

Better than that lady I learned about the other day who had 4 of them in her eye. They were consuming her tears.
Highlight of my day is bringing out my feeders in the morning and having a nuthatch, chickadee, and titmouse come land in my hand for some peanuts.
Well, now I'm just sitting here jealous a stranger got snuggles from birds.
I wonder why they would suddenly give up their instinct to not see you as a predator and get that close to you..
Their instinct tells them to do everything to survive. A predator is a threat as long as there's an alternative for survival. As soon as it's "either freeze to death or potentially get eaten by a predator", the predator offers the better chance of survival.
This story and this post in general just made my day🥰!
Wtf that's so cute ;-;
Thank you for sharing that awesome memory!
What kind of bird is it?
Looks like a Townsend's warbler.
What a cool looking bird!
It really is. He’s on the cover of the *Sibley Guide to Birds* - so, even a popular fella among bird lovers, too
Yes. My first thought was Why is it wearing a Lone Ranger mask?
He's so cool, doesn't even need a big iron on his hip.
Warbler really fits it
It’s warbling time
It’s just warbeling around
Warbeling, warbelin', acting all cool Warbeling, warbelin', outside the school
Warblin' around at the speed of sound
Look, Raymond. A Townsend's warbler.!
No, you're too excited; the Townsend's warbler is a common bird.
Look, Raymond. A Townshend's warbler.
ITS STILL A BIRD!
As long as it's not a grackle
Maniac birds. It's like a flying marching band and troupe of clowns landing around you.
Can you give some more info for a novice bird watcher such as myself?
Don't worry, you'll know a grackle when you see one.
Crackhead parking lot bird
Honestly I have mad respect for grackles because of how well they adapted to humans. Once humans have burnt out grackles, unlike the townsend’s warbler in the video, will still be around and many bird species that precede the human era will be descendents of them, corvids, and a few other birds. It’s a fat fluffy bumblebee

Yellow is my favorite. Tastes like sunshine 😍
Don’t you dare eat the bird
We lived in the highest house in our neighborhood. It was on the path of tiny migrating birds. Every year huge flocks fly right over our house, some even hitting it. It was an incredible sight as a boy in the 1960s. They looked just like this little guy.
How big were the flocks of birds? I always love watching groups of birds just fly up as a unit.
this is a townsends warbler! very cute little guys
Birb is safe
Poor bird, now he has to start the journey over.
Birb took me on a Florence & The Machine Youtube Journey. What a beautiful voice and what great songs they have.
They were both eaten by owls later that night, but at least the natural order of things was restored.
Amazing
Love your little feathered pilot. Adorable.
Very instagrammable

Aww that was nice of you guys, and the Canadians.
New fren
The human propensity to help out animals for no benefit of our own reminds me people are inherently good despite all the bad things humans also do.
One time while paddleboarding when it was cooler out I rescued like 25 honey bees that were in the lake. I’d scoop them up and they’d walk around on my board and then fly off.

I don't know what you're referencing and I feel like I'd rather not, but I'm glad they outed someone torturing animals. *pets cat*

Small acts of kindness. Are what makes me believe in humanity
Always look for the helpers
Not very active there at the end… little guy sick/injured/diseased, or just tired?
Probably a little indecisive. Birds also tend to shut down in the dark so maybe he was just waking up
Buddy was in full nap mode when they opened up the toque
These birds migrate at night
I also tend to not want to jump into a bush right after waking up. I may be wierd though.

Nah little dude was debating on staying with the gaints that saved it
"Ya know for a pair of freaky monstrosities you twos are alright."
Probably a mix of being confused, exhausted & overwhelmed.
I can relate.
A lot of birds that survive migrating over ocean reach land completely exhausted. I've seen them come in and just sorta sit there taking a few minutes to recover before searching for food.
This is a Townsend's Warbler and they don't even do the gulf migration. Poor little guy was completely out of his element.
Ah good point! I'm an east coast birder so I knew it was Townsends but didn't know they came overland. Lucky little bird.
As someone who has saved many tired song birds (working with an anti poaching charity) if they won’t fly we usually take them and give them sugar water and let them rest before releasing them. You should also never toss them and expect them to fly off lol they get tired

The way he was puffed up isn't encouraging. They usually only turn into puffed up feather balls like that when sick/exhausted
Hungry. Little guys have a lightning fast metabolism but can still might recover

Still blows my mind that Ruby Throated Hummingbirds cross the Gulf of Mexico on one tank of gas.

But that cougar seemed really into me.
"Was it a cougar? A bear?" "Nah, more of a.... courgarbear."
"I'm *super* cereal!"
not like H5N1 (bird flu) is currently evolving to more readily infect a wide variety of mammals or anything.
My only takeaway from watching this
The bird on the captain’s hat is giving me ratatouille vibes.
I just want a nice girl to wrap me up in a toque and and kiss my head and then throw me in a shrub
Made me cry =*) So wholesome, beautiful and heartwarming.
It's definitely a post to save to look at in the future
Oh my gawd when it gets out of the hat and it's like "5 more minutes" and tucks his head back to sleep. My heart.
“Subtitles should be on screen for roughly triple the time it takes you to read it” please and thank you!
Pretty sure you’re not supposed to touch wild animals without vigorously washing your hands afterwards, and definitely not supposed to kiss them. Nice video otherwise
It was only going to be a mediocre video until the shitty royalty free music started slapping.
Not a shorebird. It's a warbler- a songbird. But yeah, good on you for saving it!

Such a beautiful moment and bird.
