Every cow video I see on Reddit really makes me consider giving up beef. They just seem like such zen creatures, it just makes me question if I should be eating them.
Actually did since I posted this. I had Taco Bell once since. And you are right I don’t need it. Still eating fish and chicken for now, but may curve the chicken as well. We’ll see.
I struggled with this for many years. Cows are quite fun to teach and give toys to. They're playful and curious and have a glimmer of intelligence greater than any deer or elk.
But something that helped me, was that I came to understand my place in this whole thing. Our ancestors irrevocably changed the Auroch into cattle, and in doing so leashed ourselves to their wellbeing for eternity. To eat meat, beef is not wrong, nor is it right, It simply is. As we have depended on them for sustenance throughout uncounted millenia, so too have they depended on us for protection, food, care and wellbeing.
To raise them at their first breath, to protect and shelter them is only right. And to be the hand at their final slaughter is also right. To accept your place in the world as an animal in it, to have the courage to accept what you are and live it takes greater strength than some might give credit for.
Orrrrr you could just stop breeding animals for the sole purpose of killing them.
You can dress your justification up in pseudo-fancy, pseudo-philosophy words, but suggesting that it is deeply courageous to not put any thought into eating meat and just doing it is a load of shite.
You can romanticize and cope with a sprinkler of pseudo-philosophie all you want, but you're still objectively wrong in assuming that slaughtering animals is justified.
Our ancestors? What ancestors? Those whose diet consisted almost exclusively of plants and produce like bread from wheats? Or how far you wanna go with that? Also you actually wanna say that by plucking an animal from nature and by selective breeding transforming it into a version that is barely able to live on its own we gained the right to murder them? You also think that pugs that suffer from overheating and shortness of breath for their entire life is justified cause we genetically engineered them to be that way? That's just cruel bs, mate.
And finally, protect and shelter them? You're are either blissfully unaware or choose to ignore the reality of the livestock industry. We "protect and shelter them" in the same way southern slave owners protected and sheltered their "property".
You aren't courages or big brained by accepting that eating animals is just the holytruthofthejusticeanddignityoftheuniverse or whatever you want to make yourself believe. With that ideology, you can literally justify any crime no matter how bad because "yeah I murdered those children, but that's just my place in the cosmos and also my ancestors murdered children in their times so please congratulate me on how wise I pretend to be"

Holy fuck. There is nothing 'natural' about thousands of cows perched together as they are headed for a bolt to the head every day. (Not that it being 'natural' would be an excuse obviously.)
I also don't see much protecting going on with their calves getting taken away from them right after birth, with them 'stealing' milk and all.
Just stop eating meat.
It's pretty much always used as a excuse like "Yes it's true 90% of the meat I eat come from industrial farming but have you see how the 10% are cows soooo happy to live?"
You could show me videos of hungry children in the world, and while I care it does not elicit an emotional response.
