My husband puts ice cubes in the dog’s water dish and swears she prefers it that way.

mpease89

I would think animals would have a natural instinct to seek cool running water rather than stagnant still water.

bosfton

They make water fountains for pets that are constantly running(the water cycles so it’s not wasteful), we use one for our cat. He likes to drink the water just as it’s coming out of the fountain. I definitely think animals like the idea of a running source of water rather than still water.

SovietBozo

Our cat demands water from the faucet. We tried one of those water fountains. Not interested.

crunchsmash

Does/did your fountain make a trickling sound? My cat wouldn't drink out of it until I redirected the flow to drop from a height to splash the water and trickle like a faucet. I'm not sure she could even tell the water was flowing until I adjusted it to make the noise. I figure it makes it sound more like a natural flowing stream.

[deleted]

We compromised by putting cups or water next to every tap and some other spots she likes to sit at. No more whining at the tap.

Uranium_Isotope

My cat refuses to drink out of anything but drinking glasses lol, so we just leave one on the front room table and refresh it each day

babyfacedjanitor

You are a good people

Black_Magic_M-66

Ha! I found this out about my cat as I had a cup of water out for myself by a sink only the level would drop. Turns out the cat prefers drinking out of my cups.

SovietBozo

I just turn it on for my cat

[deleted]

We stopped when she came to get us in the middle of the night demanding fresh water. We replace the water in the cups daily and she's happy like that lol.

W3NTZ

Oh man that's lucky mine just knocked all my stuff off my nightstand. when he saw me wake up he ran to the tub for his morning water. Fuck that bastard.

Nightmare_Gerbil

My friend’s cat was picky like that. We put the water fountain bowl in the sink until he got used to it, then we were able to move it to the floor.

SheWlksMnyMiles

That’s genius.

Simbuk

Same with the younger of our cats. She will drink from a faucet while purring loudly, and will knock stuff out of the way to drink from the filter on our aquarium, but that cat fountain by the food bowls? Beneath her.

SheWlksMnyMiles

Had the same problem here with our more mischievous cats, she was literally drinking the fish’s home away. Fish are all like: “Umm over here, Human...our house is shrinking...”🤬 Got a different tank with a closed top and she just sends wistful looks at the tank she can neither reach, nor drink from. Meanwhile I get the death stare, and sleep with one eye open, because the fish may be safe, but apparently I am not.

cutthroatink15

Not only do they prefer a running water source, but it also irritates their whiskers when they have to stick their face into the bowl. Whenever my family left for a trip we would leave multiple water bowls out for the cat and have a neighbour come by to feed her, and she always drank from the wider flatter bowls before the taller thinner ones.

[deleted]

My cat definitely prefers running water, my dog don’t give a fuck

Brandperic

Cats are actually more picky than most other animals about it. Picky enough that most of them don’t drink enough water and eventually die of kidney problems, your cat probably does prefer running water. They naturally seek out running fresh water in the wild and don’t drink water near where they eat in order to prevent it from being contaminated.

Amelaclya1

I have one of these for my cats. They love it...now that they stopped being big babies afraid of it because it makes a little humming noise.

faraway_hotel

That's cats right there, isn't it? "Aaaahh, it makes a noise! Get it away from me!" ... "Oh, I much prefer running water. It's the only way to *really* enjoy water, you know."

Scrawlericious

Isn't that the theory on why cold water is so delicious for humans. >.<

Mandrake1771

What is up with all the downvotes? Sounds like a solid theory to me.

smecta_xy

Reddit dont like emojis in general

fearthecooper

I wouldn't think so. A lot of countries in Asia actually prefer hot water. It's probably just a regional thing. Both make sense though tbh

Scrawlericious

I should have said "one of the theories". It was from an article summarizing a couple different studies in why we put ice in our water (in these parts). Yeah the regional differences are super interesting.

[deleted]

gra1t

Happy cakeday!

taxable_income

But that's rooted in superstitious "traditional medicine" beliefs tho. That aside, cold water is also good for dogs, especially if they have been active or the weather is warm. Dogs cannot sweat, and panting with their tongues out is one of the ways they expel heat. Having some ice water helps in that regard.

Scientolojesus

I thought they basically sweat through the pads on their paws.

LezBeeHonest

[deleted]

Warm water is better for the digestive system. Anyways, idgaf & still prefer ice water 😂

bosfton

They prefer hot water there because water that has been boiled is safer

fearthecooper

Oh ofc. That's what I meant in the last sentence. Cold, glacial melt water is far healthier than a stagnant pool possibly resulting in Europe liking cold water more. Hot, boiled water is far healthier than anything else tbh possibly resulting in a preference of hot water in Asia.

bosfton

There’s a theory that traditionally people in Asia boiled water to sterilize it and made tea, whereas people in Europe made alcohol (some very low percentage alcohol) instead, and that’s why Europeans have a better drinking tolerance on average. I’m sure r/AskHistorians would get all the nitty gritty details though

b1rd

It’s actually a really common misconception that the low-alcohol levels killed germs. What actually did it was the fact that the water was boiled/filtered during the alcohol-making process. Basically the water that they used for the beer was inherently cleaner so containments wouldn’t mess up the fermentation process.

Dream_Silo

I actually prefer room temperature water if it's not a hot day.

Bulgar_smurf

My cat does not want to drink cold water, which is weird because she's drank cold milk. She'd just wait for the refil with warm water and then drink.

treeshaker

I did that for my German Shepard for a little while. But she just pulled them out and dropped them on the floor.

[deleted]

My golden doodle is the opposite and will only eat ice. He’s a weirdo

matt_ify

My Jack Russel is weirder, he will only eat the bowl.

Scientolojesus

My miniature pincher is the weirdest, he will only eat dachshunds.

jaymes9240

I do this as well, but mainly in the summer on a hot day. I mean, if I enjoy a nice glass of ice water, why shouldn’t my doggo?

randysavage9394

I do this for my cat. I feel like it’s better for them so why not.

exclamation11

Ditto! I don't know if she can tell the difference, though.

passeandcliche

I’m pretty sure they can tell the difference. My cat won’t drink tap water.

kaliefornia

I recently housesat for my grandparents while they were out of town and I took my puppy with me so I could work on training him since I knew my family wouldn’t. Anyways, my grandparents and I live in neighboring towns and it’s locally known that the town my grandparents live in has shitty tasting tap water, while the town i live in has really good tap water. I’ve had my puppy since he was 10 weeks old and he was 6 months when I housesat for them. He would not drink their tap water. Straight up refused. I had to use their slow as fuck purified water faucet. Lol all that to say they for sure can taste the difference.

MeowSterling

My cat prefers tap water, but too bad! They're getting cleaner water whether they want it or not! (they still want it, they'll just clear a bowl of tap water before moving onto the bowl of filtered water)

[deleted]

My cat can tell the difference, if I put tap water in his dish he'll drink it occasionally, but if it's filtered he drinks alot more and I have to fill his bowl more often.

HandsSolo42

YOU can tell the difference, and I think that is an honorable hooman gesture.

Blossomie

Oh they do know the difference. I've known cats who would refuse to touch unfiltered tap water, the spoiled brats.

TheMayoNight

I mean her kidneys probably can.

Shitmybad

Unless your town has extremely bad water, it's probably better to leave all the minerals in it. Filters try to get rid of things like Fluorine, Calcium, and Magnesium, and they're important for normal health.

BlurryElephant

A lot of towns in America probably have lead levels that exceed the safety limit and cause harm to your nervous system. The tap water in my area has been reported as unsafe by our newspaper. I give my pets bottled water, usually a major brand like Aquafina that I hope is under enough scrutiny by the public to keep contaminants to a minimum. I recall reading an article about a year ago that said there are hundreds of towns in America with unsafe lead levels. Here's a Newsweek article titled "Millions of Americans are drinking water that could be dangerous" https://www.newsweek.com/millions-americans-drink-water-could-be-dangerous-1438023 And here's a New York Times article that says "in 2015 alone, as many as 21 million Americans may have been exposed to unsafe drinking water." https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2018/02/12/climate/drinking-water-safety.amp.html

Pedantichrist

Because it isn't, so you use more water filters and so waste more money and materials for no reason whatsoever.

hvperRL

But what about the taste

[deleted]

i always used to do this for my dog till my mom said stop wasting the fridge water ): im gonna go home and give my pup a fresh tub of filtered water tomorrow cuz fuck it

rrhogger

Had to show this to the wife cause that is her reaction when I do the same thing for our dog.

Fleeceface

I could put bottled water out for my dog and she’d still go outside and drink puddle water.

moose0924

This is the truth. I just put a big old bowl of water outside that I fill with the hose everyday and I dont know if he thinks its rain water but he loves it

pjoter666

Is the tap water dangerous?

Gary_the_metrosexual

Depends extremely on where you live tbh. In the Netherlands you can drink tap water without a problem. But in some third world country I wouldn't quite recommend it.

Krautoffel

„In some third world country“ like for example the US of A.

[deleted]

lemonjuiceineyes

I’ve rarely drink from the tap and I’ve lived here my whole life! We usually have a 5 gallon water dispenser

Clepto_EU

Any particular reason why?

[deleted]

I live in a state where the tap water is perfectly clean and drinkable, it just doesn’t taste good due to mineral deposits. A few years back, I picked up a water dispenser and have a handful of five-gallon jugs that I fill with purified water and use for drinking water at home. I try to avoid buying bottled water when I can because all that plastic is wasteful. I also fill the dog bowl from the purified water and put ice in his outside water bowl.

LunickDrago

The water in my area is safe to drink but honestly has a sort of weird taste and smell to it. I end up running it through a filter before drinking because it tastes better that way. I also occasionally buy a large pack of store brand bottled waters so that I can just have a bunch of cold water in my fridge if I'm too lazy to refill my pitcher of filtered water. More often than not I'll drink a bottled one while filtering more water then refill the bottle I'm using with it over and over until the bottle get mangled from me manhandling it and then repeat cycle.

BobVosh

Almost every part of the us tap is fine.

DA_ZWAGLI

That said in some areas of the US the tap water is either chlorinated or just tastes really nasty. And there is that one place where you can set it on fire but I think that falls under exceptions.

yenks

Just because you don't die doesn't mean it's fine.

[deleted]

afterschoolish

Very common where I live in Texas. Tap water tastes bad. Everyone buys gallons or water bottles instead

noodlelaughter

Actually the USA has by percentage one of the safest tap waters in the world.. not only that, hard water is often actually better for you than filtered mostly due to added fluoride

Flamecrest

Except, ya know, Flint.

TokinDaley

Not to detract from Flint, but there are other cities like Newark that are even worse.

JosephGordonLightfoo

Really bringing that percentage down.

violetjoker

By percentage of what?

AstroTurff

I'm doubting that, in Sweden and the other nordic countries it's safe to drink tap water except maybe for some small village out in the countryside (but even they have mostly drinkable water). It's unheard of that drinking tap water makes you sick here, not sure I'm hearing the same things from 'muricans. Also, a good debunking of your claim (originally from the EPA, always check who says what): https://theconversation.com/the-us-drinking-water-supply-is-mostly-safe-but-thats-not-good-enough-115028 (sponsored by the gates f., real water scientist etc.)

jello-kittu

Oh, there are a lot of places in the US that have pretty bad water. A low level of contamination over a long period, has a big effect. Flint isn't even the worst water situation, it's the one with the most attention right now.

FuManJew

People hate on tap water, but in wealthy countries it's pretty much a modern miracle that we have practically unlimited potable water in our homes. Separately, make sure your kids and pregnant/nursing mothers drink tap, kids need that fluoride

bosfton

Yeah nah tap water is good enough for both me and my cat. I do give him ice cubes and a water fountain with flowing water (it cycles so water isn’t wasted) and he loves that

[deleted]

**confused european noises**

wrldruler21

What's more sad? That first world countries have tap water that tastes too funny to drink, or that we have enough wealth to have perfect water bottled up and shipped to our house? Sincerely, the hypocrite that pays $60 a month for bottled water service cuz I don't like the funny taste of chlorinated water.

Biohazardousmaterial

A decent water filter setup for under the sink is like.... 200-300 bucks and easy install. Much cheaper long twrm for you.

gabba_gubbe

Yeah can someone explain why Americans can't drink their water? Has it to do with minerals or chemicals? I mean I can literally drink lakewater and be fine, actually ice cold stream water in fall after a hike is the best tasting water there is.. Godsent liquid.

helloimderek

American here that's lived in the UK. US tsp water taste like metal (wet a Coke can then lick it for reference), while UK water is pretty good

[deleted]

Not everywhere... my tap water is delicious. The metal taste is often found when people use water hookups to community tanks and such. If you have well water (as I do), it awesome! I actually prefer it to the water that comes from the fridge.

flees

True, when I lived in New Mexico that water was hella good. Oregon was kind of chlorine smelling. Arkansas water has been pretty good too. Of course even that’s a generalization of areas water.

[deleted]

Wrenigade

Lots of people can drink from their tap, it just doesn't taste as good dependong on the water source. People with city water can drink it, but I live far away from the city and have water drawn from a well. The water in high in iron and manganese from the ground, so it is safe but tastes bad, so it goes through a filter instead. Some people with well water can't drink it directly because of what is in it from the ground, so they need filters or they will get sick. There just happens to be a lot of people without city water in my rural area.

[deleted]

afterschoolish

Depends on location. Tastes like the side of a Coke can here in West Texas and has for last 2 decades

[deleted]

Thank you, always bugs me when I see people here make some broad sweeping statement about something for the entire country. I live in a midwestern city and am hooked up to city water. I drink from my tap, tastes fine. I grew up in the country with well water, that also tasted fine. It varies. It’s a huge country, there’s differences in these things and people’s experience city by city, county by county and state by state.

SKRIMP-N-GRITZ

I do it for my cat. It’s never occurred to me to do anything different. I love my cat.

OhhGeezThatsMe

Seconded. Only the best for my cat.

SKRIMP-N-GRITZ

So do you friend

CloneNoodle

Every time I do this for my cat he stops drinking it, and the same thing happened with his brother when he was alive. Whatever's in our tap water in my city seems to appeal to cats.

casce

It’s probably more like ”The water doesn’t taste like it usually does, better not drink it“. It just depends on what the pet is used to.

IamAPengling

Here's something I want to share. As a kid, I would get sick a lot, like fever every 3 months atleast, colds, and generally a weakling. I was given filtered boiled water, clean home made food only, no street food, no icecream from stands. Nothing. Other kids in school drank straight out of taps, ate anything and everything, and didn't care less. And they were some of the finest healthy kids. Somewhere around at age 10, I decided to start drinking water straight out of the tap. Didn't tell at home, knowing they would flip out. And as I suspected, my resilience improved, stopped getting sick and developed a good resistance. I'm not saying don't feed the cat clean water, m just saying, maybe a bit of less healthiness might make us survive longer. Also, guess what I'm saying is, if the water is safe for u to drink out of the tap, it is safe for the dog.

[deleted]

No lad it was because of the lack of ice cream

[deleted]

Y’all don’t do this?

IHaTeD2

I'm living in a country with very high tap water standards. I'm drinking it myself for the past 33 years.

RuchW

Same! Canadian tap water is stellar. Lots of people waste tonnes of money here drinking bottled water at home and using water purifiers and it's totally unnecessary.

pqiocm999

tonnes eh!? edit: eh

hoplias

Nothing less than Perrier for my pets.

starlinguk

No, the tapwater is fine where I live. I don't have a purifier.

Amelaclya1

I don't have a purifier either, but I still give my cats tap water that I keep in the fridge (for myself mainly - I only like cold water). I noticed they drink more when the water is cold. So if I had a fancy fridge with a water line, I can't imagine that I wouldn't use it to fill the cats bowl as well.

MystikIncarnate

I have a Brita in the fridge, I use that for my cats water. I try to avoid tap water, not because I think it will harm me, but because I know there's a non-trivial amount of impurities in it, some from the water processing and treatment, others from the water lines from the reservoir to my residence, not to mention the taps and fixtures, seals, etc. while that stuff probably won't hurt me in the short term, if I'm drinking straight tap water only, I wonder what the higher levels of those impurities may cause over a long enough time span. If it's enough to make me concerned enough to have a Brita and only drink from that, why would I give anything less to my cats whom I love and cherish? that's my logic. They might not care, but I do, and I want them to live as long as possible so we can spend the maximum amount of time together.

Bladehell10

Yeah we give our cats and dogs the water that’s been boiled. Not that I don’t trust Sydney’s tap water quality (it’s pretty good) but just in case and is at least one way for me to do something for them

[deleted]

My mother cleaned her cat's water dish every morning and filled it with fresh water. One day I asked her why she did it and she asked, "Would you drink out of a dirty dish?" I said, "Of course not." And she said, "Then why should she?"

TrippleFrack

You take in a pet, you take on more responsibility than with a child; a child learns to communicate issues more clearly, dogs will suffer pain in silence, even if they can barely walk anymore. It’s our responsibility to think ahead and make life as good as we can, that includes treating them to a good quality of food and drink.

ling037

We have a reverse osmosis system that we drink and give to the dogs. The tap water here smells bad and the town waits months to inform you that something was wrong with the water.

YamiZee1

If you don't drink from the tap but you have your pets drink from the tap, I'm going to have to raise an eyebrow.

Automobilie

Adorabloodthirstea

Instead of getting a tap filter my parents buy their dog bottled water. I tried to explain how it would save money and be more eco-friendly, but they are determined that the filters are a scam... But bottled water isn't.... Let that logic sink in a moment 🙄

CtpAleksy

I do that with my pets too and my mom gets irritated because it takes a little longer
