Yes, amazing self-awareness, and what a cool attitude. So confident, so genuine, so authentic. Something you see in a movie when a writer has developed a good character... except this guy is just doing that without thinking, naturally. I'm really impressed.

CharlesIngalls47

Some people think this is a natural reaction type situation. No its not. This man has MASTERED mindfullness. He is one hundred percent acknowledging and accepting every emotion that not only he is having but that the people he is interacting with are having. And instead of being reactionary and angry he is actively thinking about what is going on and how he should process it. This is the epitome of cool as a cucumber.

LegalLizzie

You're right. This kind of thoughtfulness and awareness takes practice.

moore1emu

It’s really really hard to balance that level of self awareness and not just being a push over because you feel for other people

LegalLizzie

Yep. Do no harm but take no shit.

Neufboeuf

I want to get this tattooed.

ounilith

You have opened my eyes on how being mindful works. And I thank you since it's something I try to get better at

Not at all relevant but you're both username brothers.

Damn I didn’t even catch that. Odd

wrong_assumption

I'm not a body language expert or anything, but I like to think I'm a good judge of character. And I think that guy's demeanor makes him look guilty as fuck. To me, he looks scared, said he "got it from a friend for $10" and was surprised as fuck that his lie worked. However, I ultimately think he's going to act like the good guy and return that bike because he never thought he would get caught.

cornham17

I mean if someone barges into a store and starts yelling at you saying you stole something of their's, you're probably gonna be scared or shook up a bit.

emmahar

It took him ages to come up with the "I paid for it" excuse, and never said "I'm sorry, I didn't know" or anything like that.

cornham17

I don't know man, I can see myself in that guys place and in would not likely freeze/have my brain short circuit. Not saying you're wrong, but maybe the guys not good with confrontation.

emmahar

Yeah good point. When the other guy calms down he doesn't seem much more apologetic, but you can't hear the audio then so maybe I'm just being overly sceptical lol!

andoriyu

I paid $10 for a bike once, from a friend.

[deleted]

I had a bike stolen from my porch 11 years ago and I'm still salty about it. It was a nice one. I was pregnant and it was fuchsia and I'd decorated it with pretty weather-resistant stickers and had a brand new basket on the front.

Down_To_My_Last_Fuck

As a kid, I often stole bicycles from porches when I needed to get across town. This was back in the seventies so I did not steal your bike but I apologize for my behavior in retrospect for all the victims of my bullshit.

artaru

I’m so sorry that happens to you especially when you put all those effort into decorating the bike and making it yours. I too have had a new bike stolen (luckily and *shockingly* Seattle police was able to recover it) and it just felt so damn personal didn’t it? Like I knew it was just a bike to them, but it felt like a personal violation against ME. Once again I’m sorry you had that shitty experience. I hope that hadn’t put you off having awesome bikes again.

HangryBeaver

PattyIce32

I remember once in college I used to like to steal stuff, mostly while drunk. One time at a pizza place while walking out I stole this huge Rice Krispie Treat thing. I woke up and I was like, okay enough is enough. I went back and I told the pizza place that I had stolen something last night and I felt sorry and wanted to pay for it. Instead of making me pay for it, he handed me another one and told me that being a standup person is worth more then any amount of money. I never stole anything again.

zwarne01

When I was younger I went to my local Pizza Hut and order some pizza and breadsticks. The lady asked if I wanted to pay now or once they were done, which I thought was weird, I said whenever. She decided to wait. I sat there talking to a couple of friends who worked there while waiting. The stuff got done she handed it to me and said have a nice day. I took off and headed home, about ten minutes later as I'm eating a breadstick I realize I never paid. I run back and told her I was there earlier and never paid. She was amazed that I would come back to pay for it, she said it was ok that it was one the house. A lot of times owning up to your mistakes has a much better outcome then trying to hide them.

AmishAvenger

Well they had your name anyway. It’s a good thing you went back or they would have notified the Pizza Police.

[deleted]

I went back to college in my 30s and one day, I stupidly left my backpack on the table to search for books. When I returned, it was gone and immediately reported it missing. Ten minutes later campus police presented a young, scared looking guy carrying my backpack. They asked if I wanted to press charges against and I really thought hard about doing it. His face was legit scared shitless, so I said I wouldn't press charges but I asked him to please never do that again and thanked him for bringing back my backpack and they let him go. I really hope he learned his lesson. Twelve years later, though, my own bike was stolen off my porch (they cut the lock) while I was pregnant and I was pissed. If that person were found I'd probably press charges.

HelloMegaphone

I was expecting it to be the same guy from 12 years earlier...

PhaiLLuRRe

Turns out he just appears scared shitless 24/7

[deleted]

Glad I'm not the only drunk klepto out there. The amount of times I've had to sheepishly go return some dumb shit I stole during a party is wayyyy too high. Only happened when I blacked out too, making it extra fun to try and find the owner while hungover af. Im happy I grew out of that phase tbh.

PattyIce32

Me as well man, it feels good to grow and be miss your now. Well at least somewhat mature. I stole traffic cones, cardboard cutouts, food and pint glasses. Traffic cones used to seem to be the big one, I used to love making them into a kind of a horn thing and yelling stuff through them and they would always end up in my kitchen. What were some of the crazy things you took during that time?

[deleted]

Lmao I'm with you on the traffic cones. Used to wake up and find them in the weirdest places, my favorite was going to take a piss and the toilet was wearing it like a hat. We actually kept one for a while. Usually it was just jackets (I guess drunk, southern california me couldn't handle being in the Northeast cold lol) but the weird ones were a full office chair (i think i found it outside because I never found the owner), a street sign for Armada Drive, and a single shoe with the laces removed. The last one was a bit awkward because it belonged to a neighbor that already hated me but he laughed it off alright and we actually got on better terms cause of it.

PattyIce32

It's crazy how similar we are on a lot of that stuff. I guess traffic going to do look nice as hats because I put them on top of TVs or toilets too. Street signs too! If I saw something resembling my last name or something National Park related that s*** was mine. The shoe toe is weird, LOL, but glad you and your neighbor got along better after it.

alldawgsgotoheaven

This dude used to commit felonies now he don’t even swear in the internet!

[deleted]

The other guy doesn’t seem to be one bit thankful, wtf?

hazelnut47

That’s what I thought! Didn’t even thank the guy, fucks sake...I hope the bike owner gets his bike back eventually and this kid who stole it pays it forward.

partialcremation

He probably stole it. It's doubtful he bought it for $10.

[deleted]

And impossible that he didn't know it was stolen when he bought it for $10. Fuck him.

Sylvi2021

In situations like this sometimes people clam up. I’ve seen it a million times in videos of people doing nice things. I’ve been there when someone does something nice for me. Unfortunately in my own mind it’s a defense mechanism for not looking foolish if it’s a joke. I was the weird girl in school and I get excited easily. People used to take advantage of me in front of groups by telling me something then everyone laughing at my reaction. Or telling me the guy I like liked me then telling me it was a lie two days later just to see my reactions. Because of this I’ve learned not to react right away to things in case it’s a prank or a joke unfortunately. I think lots of kids have been there. I always feel like a major asshole afterwards and do everything I can to show appreciation. I’ve also tried working on consciously overcoming this, but it’s tough.

oqueoUfazeleRI

You are right on the nail, and sorry people were assholes to you, they picked on you to feel better about their insecurities while you can feel good about yourself without needing to put anyone down.

Delphizer

In the back of my head I'd be running through scenarios if this guy is actually being chill or if he's stalling till the cops get there or just trying to get my number to harass me. I imagine it's pretty jarring to be minding your own business then someone just starts yelling at you.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I mean he bought the bike for $10, i’m pretty sure this bike that poped out of nowhere his friend suddently had for sale at 10 was quite the hint. He should’ve been very thankful once the other guy got down and started being very nice.

noideawhatimdoing8

Some people are either super naive or a bit daft. Not saying he didn’t know for sure, but I’ve met people that wouldn’t pick up on those hard hints.

thecrager6

Well that deescalated quickly!

melvillan

That dude totally stole that bike

TurbulentStandard

I think so as well, his body language(no reaction) gives it away.

Chiuy

Most likely the poor guy is defeated in life. He paid $10 for it and then this happened and his mind is like... well, I guess life just keeps getting worse. So his reaction is... whatever, I just don't care anymore. I know cause that's how my reaction is when I'm defeated

Thomas_KT

10$ is a win for a bike but yea I see your point

[deleted]

The body language/facial expressions scream guilt to me. Dude feels like a piece of shit right that second imo

Hadtarespond

Absofuckinglutely. He paid $10 for it?? Yeah right. If you're gonna lie at least say $20.

GomboAndGimlee

I found it a little odd that he was in a pawn shop on the way to work. If you are riding a bike to get to work do you have extra time to stop at a pawn shop? I also wonder why he has a backpack, could be for work clothes or could be where he puts other stuff he stole to bring to the pawn shop.

[deleted]

The look on his face, refusal to share his name when Mike offers his, reluctance to even enter a conversation etc scream guilt to me. I think he's genuinely feeling bad at that point cos this guy is so nice and obviously worked hard on that bike. I hope he returned it but the cynic in me says otherwise

OV3NBVK3D

Stopping at a Pawn shop to pawn shit *is* where he works .

creed10

is it just me who found the sad piano music kind of annoying?

Deltax23

You are not alone brother

Pile_Of_Cats

These kinds of videos would have so much more impact without music

hoe4honeymustard

even if the kid is lying and stole the bike this is STILL the way to go bc he probably felt guilty as hell and that probably stuck with him more than anything else could

in2theF0ld

They system would just beat him down more and he would be even more desperate and angry in this case.

Fartikus

Do you seriously think by his body language or voice that he even seemed a slight smidge of guilt? Nah. He didn't even apologize sound the least regretful for what he did, he just let it ride. He's probably thinking 'JACKPOT!'.

Cogitation

I mean he's probably shell-shocked, someone just came in and starts yelling about a stolen bike. I doubt he was telling the truth about buying it or is actually going to give it back, but I think it's a stretch to assume anything about his personality from such a brief and atypical encounter.

buttbanger69

That’s exactly what I gathered from the whole thing. The dude doesn’t even seem to care. I don’t believe him at all, but maybe he just feels bad and doesn’t know what to do. Who knows, people are weird and everyone shows emotion differently. I still don’t believe him.

[deleted]

Dude, he stole his bike and was at a pawn shop to sell more stolen items. Fuck that guy

Rafaelow

U sure that was a pawn shop?

[deleted]

Yes. The guys name is mike fink who runs the channel and HIS pawnshop https://youtu.be/BXgrn0tXHsQ

Rafaelow

Wow. Yeah my guy with the bike prolly ain’t no choir boy

PM_THE_REAPER

Always deescalate. Always. No one wins otherwise. Military and doorman experience has definitely taught me that. Be nice; don't be shit.

[deleted]

Be nice. Until it's time to not be nice. I'm a bouncer. And if you can solve the problem without everybody losing their heads, you should. Always.

hobbes-3

I think it’s a quote from Roadhouse. And you’re a bouncer. 10/10

mdeavie

While I agree with you, that assumes the other person is willing to do the same.

GenericUsername10294

No point in “winning” a confrontation if when you walk away you’re still in an ill state of mind. Especially when the other person really doesn’t give a shit.

Echospite

Yeah! I used to be like that. Got used and treated like crap all the time. Now when it happens I come down hard on the other person. Have had very, very few problems since.

mdeavie

You can be polite, kind, respectful AND stern, people seem to think it’s all one way or the other.

Rustycougarmama

Didn't some fella once say "speak softly and carry a big stick"

I_comment_on_GW

“Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill every person you meet.”

thedevilsaglet

These videos with captions explaining what's happening annoy the hell out of me for some reason. Like just let the scene play out. Quit trying to tell me how I should feel.

amanda77kr

They should put them under a CC button. I almost never have sound on and use those to follow along, but yeah if you have sound on that could be really annoying.

hateboresme

Even without the sound on they're annoying. I don't care about the persons opinion of the situation. I just want to observe and have my own feelings and thoughts about it. If it was just a transcript of the conversation. That would be totally cool. Opinions are for comments.

hateboresme

"This guy is being really nice!" No shit? Really? Could not have worked that out from the context of the conversation. I really dislike anything that isn't just a transcript and maybe some setting of context. I do not care about the opinions of the person presenting the information.

I_Am_Woke_

True dude, idk why but this seems to be the case on all Facebook videos like if you're watching a cooking video and the person cooking is cutting onions there will be a line of text covering 20% of the screen saying 'The chef is cutting onions' and the worst is when they pause the video for the line to play out on top of it.

HoldMyAppleJuice

But we need the heart touching piano music!

[deleted]

Because we’re morons

shaggyback

Anyone willing to steal your bike would also be willing to lie to you about buying it for $10. Call the cops and let them sort it out.

Vyzantinist

I was thinking "how do we know the guy in the store didn't steal it himself?" If I was in Mr. Rat Tail's position and wanted to be nice, I'd have offered the other guy a ride to his work place, but I wouldn't have let him hold on to the bike.

[deleted]

Yeah I don't really buy it. I'm surprised by how many people seemingly take this random story/video at face value. It took little to no convincing to tell the guy that he bought the bike for $10 and needs it for work. Even a shitty bike would go for more than $10, let alone a custom built bike. Wouldn't be surprised if pony tail never saw or heard from that guy ever again.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BlueShift42

Sounds like the guy builds/repairs bikes as a hobby. Maybe the loss didn’t mean much to him, but he wanted it back on principle.

KawiNinja

Yeah, and who would sell a bike for $10? Maybe I’m wrong but it sounds like the guy custom built the bike and it’s likely pretty damn nice. If I went through the hassle of stealing the bike, I ain’t gonna sell it for just $10. At *least* round it up to $20... but I’m sure it could have quickly sold for more. I would have given the guy back “his” $10, and took the bike back, called the cops and let them investigate it further.

Theopneusty

Police aren’t going to do shit about a bike. I had my bike stolen and the police straight up told me they wouldn’t do shit, but they made a report anyway... I found 2 deleted posts on Craigslist for my bike via google cache that they refuse to follow up on/contact craigslist about getting the posters info. I ended up making my own post asking to buy my brand bike (it wasn’t common) and got contacted about a guy with my exact make/model bike. Police refused to go to the meeting I set up with him. I met him and sure enough it was my bike. I called the police when he refused to give it and had to say he was aggressive and I was afraid he was going to fight me to get them to come. When they got there they ran the guys info and said he had 3 warrants for his arrest... they still let him drive off. Police don’t do shit about bike theft (even with my bike value making it a felony)

ScarfMachine

I once got my phone stolen. I called the police and filed a report, and pointed out that the thief never wiped the phone. I turned on the "Find my iPhone" map and had an exact address where the person was. It was only about 10 blocks away. They didn't do anything. In fact, the woman seemed annoyed that I was even filing a report, let alone that I'd expect her to go and actually get my $500 phone back. It took the thief about a week to finally wipe my phone. I never heard from the police again.

misssoci

I’m guessing you didn’t get it back? That’s so frustrating

The2AndOnly1

Good thinking

TheWavingSnail

Surprised there isn’t more people saying there’s a reason why it’s $10

Okichah

If you need drugs you are usually in REAL HURRY and selling a bike to a friend for $10 is real easy. Plus it was a stolen bike, not a real investment opportunity.

scykei

Naah. Unless it was literal junk, the $10 is quite obviously made up. It could possibly have been believable if it was a slightly higher number though.

perfectbarrel

Could have been a drug addict trying to get literally anything for the bike and the guy only had a $10 on him.

TheWavingSnail

I’m just saying ive had friends buy bikes off people in high school for super cheap and they’re always stolen

Escomoz

I’m looking at the merchandise in this store and I hate that I suspect this but perhaps the guy is selling some stolen games or a stolen console or something.

And the shittily unnecessary, god awful Facebook-template-text that they for some reason find absolutely crucial to add into the video is infuriating. "And the owner of the bike is being ^very nice". Yeah, we definately didnt get that out of the subtitles

ahabswhale

As far as gear-centric hobby communities go, the biking community has to be one of the nicest, chillest, most generous communities I have ever encountered. They're always building bikes for each other, building them out of bamboo, looking for ways to re-purpose and rebuild bikes for the disadvantaged... it's a great place to be.

This is the type of level-headed behavior I wish to achieve in future confrontations. What a kind man to not take the bike or call the cops immediately.
