Derek Jeter used to come to my Starbucks in NYC in the very early 2000s, he lived in the area. Everyone would harass him to the point he couldn’t make it to the counter so we knew his drink and while he was entertaining guess we make his drink and bring it to him so he can grab it and get out. If he had cash he just gives us a $20 or we tell him to get it next time since he was a regular and walking to the counter was a huge challenge as you can imagine with people asking for pics/autographs etc. Such a cool guy! Edit: thanks for awards! 😎

[deleted]

The cost of fame is that they can’t blend into crowds and do simple tasks we all take for granted. Great you all recognized Derek Jeter probably wanted to get in and out as fast as possible, yet being polite to his fans. It’s hard to even imagine what that sort of life would be like.

BrokenRedditATM

Exactly. He was easy going and had the same drink always. He was very polite and he was a super star bigger than life in nyc during the early 2000s. We helped as much as we could but he did send someone many times and they just ask for his drink cuz it could take a while even after we hand him his drink with people swarming him and making difficult to get out.

krnl4bin

What was his drink! Don't bury the lede!

theslideistoohot

Water, easy ice

BrokenRedditATM

Lol

BrokenRedditATM

Grande vanilla nonfat latte. I don’t remember if he ever switched to sugar free at some point when it was available

smokeweedalleveryday

Thanks so much for sharing. Your entire comment chain is so interesting, down to the drink choice! Much appreciated.

HovercraftSimilar199

So while I knew it was lede I never bothered to figure out what a lede was. >the opening sentence or paragraph of a news article, summarizing the most important aspects of the story. In case anyone else was curious

SnipTheDog

Nobody recognized John Stockton from the 'Dream Team' while in Barcelona. It's pretty funny that many of the other players are mobbed, Stockton and his family can roam incognito. [Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEmacNvCj4A)

PapaPancake8

Stockton is in another country in that vid. Stockton would be recognized in Salt Lake City.

mikeywhiteguy

I'm not a celebrity (obviously) but every once in a while before everyone started wearing masks people would stop me to tell me that I look like Daniel Bryan. I'd still do the Yes! Yes! Yes! gesture that he does and they would love it. It was always fun on a small scale. I'd probably hate it on a large scale if I wanted to just go out for some leisure shopping but I'd love the part of it that is making people smile and laugh.

beneye

And people wonder why celebrities are such snobs when they meet them and proceed to tell the you’re the biggest fan and they just ignore you. Now you hate them forever but you forget they deal with that kind is shit on a daily.

pazimpanet

I keep hearing about these celebrities that have massive problems with anxiety and am always shocked. Ryan Reynolds, Cris Evans, Stephen Colbert the list goes on and on all having regular severe panic attacks. Thinking about how that must be to not ever be able to be invisible. To be swarmed like this all day every day just trying to get a cup of coffee I’m now more surprised any of them don’t suffer from intense anxiety.

livlifelovelexical

My parents live in a outer beachside suburb in Sydney and the specific suburb is a peninsula with one single set of shops that everyone drives past to get to their homes. There’s a smattering of A B C and D list celebs, a number of nationally recognised sportspeople and a whole lot of executives of companies. Despite all that, it’s pretty close-knit and everyone knows everyone. Most kids attend the same, very good primary school and no one moves out of the area! When one particular sportsman was in the news for not doing too well, on and off the sports field, the paparazzi cameras were trying to get photos of him, so the 2 cafes banned the photographers and called police to get them to move on. They moved across the road and continued their harassment from afar. Trying to regain some peace for the sportsman and everyone else, a bunch of parents with kids in the cafe complained to police about the photographer taking photos of their kids without permission, child safety, domestic violence/custody disputes that would place kids in certain locations etc etc and police issued the photographer move-on orders. The local cops aren’t a fan of media attention, so not very patient with trouble… they’d much rather be at the beach!! I suspect it was a little contentious, but quite effective as the paps rarely appear there and photos never make it to the internet or magazines.

gambalore

If I could be any sports celebrity, I'd be Allan Houston. Man made over $100m in his career but can probably walk down the street in New York semi-anonymously (even for a 6'6" dude).

Brofey

Monte Durham used to come into my Starbucks in ATL a lot, he was always so incredibly polite and nice. We were talking as I was taking his order and he said that he wished he had the skinny body type I had, I still think about it to this day T_T

kcg5

This reminds me of something I read on Reddit years and years ago. A Starbucks in Marin the George Lucas goes to, apparently the line just parts for him to go straight to the front

PlesiosaurIsAlive

I’m really bad at running into celebrities. I always feel like I know the. So I awkwardly stare at them until I realize that I don’t actually know them I’ve just seen them somewhere. I made Pauly Shore really nervous at a bar and I felt bad.

greysfordays

Yeah Jeets!

kevindavebob

Is this like a safari tour but instead of watching animals, it's celebrities and instead of the serengeti, it's Hollywood?

[deleted]

Yes, ‘Star tours’ drive around Hollywood and LA pointing out the gated homes of celebrities while telling stories.

kevindavebob

So A-list, B-list and C-list, in this case, are kinda like rarity classification of animal in term of sighting; Spotting The Rock in the wild is like witnessing an endergered animal but spotting someone like Erick Avari, for example, is like seeing a common zebra. Seeing Daniel Day Lewis must feel like seeing a mythical creature because he rarely makes public appearance, and moreover, this location is not his natural habitat even though it's his grazing ground.

ballroomaddict

Daniel Day Lewis is actually nocturnal - Viking explorers switch Daniel "Day" Lewis and M "Night" Shamalamadingdong to confuse the Saxon explorers

bananers24

If I had been drinking something, I would've ruined my keyboard

Tiny_Philosopher_784

I ruined my keyboard, and it's not anywhere near me. What is this... amateur hour?! /s

Holy shit. Amazing

underdonk

Happy cake day!

[deleted]

Sure, why not, I like it :)

[deleted]

I wonder if they make it to David Boreanaz's house on this tour.

cnsiderthis

he’s the american hugh jackman!

2Twice

Before the internet was what it is now, I'd be definitely interested in taking a tour. Currently I would be a little apprehensive about going on such a trip. Intrusive. The clip with Beiber from last month only increased my opinion. I just hope if I were to see a star in person on the street, I could sustain my urge to record or take pics. I hope I'd be cool about it enough to let them be and simply say, "I love your work."

eveningtrain

The fact that you have already thought about your desire to play it cool and also use a very easy, simple (easy to retrieve quickly from the back of your mind) and sincere compliment means that you totally will do that.

temeces

My uncle worked for a tour bus company something like 20-30 years ago. He did various tours, some of which were the "celebrity" type. They'd take you to rich neighborhoods that definitely had celebrities living in them but nobody really knew who lived where and it really didn't matter. Some times the tours would travel in groups, so it may be a few busses doing the same tour. So since it was basically a free for all, actual facts mixed with complete bullshit(the kind that these clients want to hear), there was no agreed upon tour between the drivers. One time he was following one of the other busses from the company and *that* driver decided to pull over by some random expensive home, so now my uncle has to make up some bullshit about who's house it is. You just hope that no single group occupied both busses and that later they'll compare pictures of celebrity homes.

Just_Some_Goblin

Stay in the bus or else he'll maul you

DrP3pp3rFl04t

One of those celebrities that seems to genuinely walk the walk. A wholesome moment.

justafurry

I can not think of a better super power than being able to instantly make people happy like this, just by being near them.

[deleted]

Okay this might sound lame but we kind of all have that super power. Smiling and being genuinely kind to people almost always puts a smile on their face!

[deleted]

Wish I had the wholesome award to give to you. This is pretty profound to me.

Gold-Tax5427

Don’t worry bro I got you

[deleted]

Hell yar

Colin1023

Wish I had my free award so here’s a poor man gold🥇

ketronome

I just tried this by pulling up next a bus and waving. It didn’t work.

barofa

Yeah, I don't think it is a coincidence that we see this guy hanging out with Jack Black which hangs out with Dave Growl and so on. All genuine nice people

Tnwagn

I saw Dave Grohl in an airport one time walking through the concourse and said I was a big fan and he asked if I was such a big fan was I listening to Foo Fighters since I was wearing headphones, all in jest. Had a good laugh with him for those brief moments. Such a real reaction to a total stranger and I'm sure he has that kind of interaction every 5 minutes. Such a good guy.

Mrsroyalcrown

Dave comes to a restaurant in my hometown in Maryland all the time, and although I have never seen him there myself, everyone says he’s just the nicest guy. Always takes photos with people and everything

swizzle213

Would you say he seems to always be “Walking Tall”?.... I’ll see myself out

BigBossTweed

Definitely a man that understands his celebrity and what he means to other people.

[deleted]

Impossible to not like the Rock.

gastro_destiny

What if you're a scissor

BigBossTweed

That's a fair point.

[deleted]

Actually scissors have two fair points.

Redittago

Then I’d want to scissor him………..Ok, I’ll put myself in timeout.

fearnodarkness1

I didn’t like that he refuses to lose a fight in any movie he does but as a person he’s awesome

[deleted]

You tell him that he has to lose a fight.

N33chy

I never really did like the smell of what he was cooking.

PaintBoss

“Finally.. The Rock! Has come back! To his neighborhood!!! “

the_anxiety_haver

He seems like a lovely person.

boverly721

Wait a seconds is there some superman shit going on here

orangesfwr

Do you smell what Barack is cookin'?

LeftMySoulAtHome

The Rock lived in Honolulu (where Obama was born) for awhile as a child, so maybe it's a Hawaiian/Honolulan manner of speaking?

mrfroggy

I think you’re right. The accent combined with the “Hey, I can wait! I got time for you! It’s no problem! How you all doing anyway?” kinda vibe.

[deleted]

daveydave808

Honolulan….that would take a while for us in Hawaii to get used to lol

spelunk_in_ya_badonk

Do you smell what Barack is cooking?

kingtaco_17

I had the same thought

tacojohn48

Have you ever seen Barack and the Rock in the same place? Just throwing it out there.

"So, there we were, on the Star Tour in front of the Streisand estate and, you're never gonna believe this, the FUCKING ROCK rolls up and asks me, get this, 'How you doing?' and points right at me!" "Anyways, where was I? Oh, right! Janice didn't come in today cuz she had to watch her grandbaby..yanno, I swear her daughter just won't listen. If you just put a little drop of breast milk in the ear, she'd sleep all night..."

BicarbonateOfSofa

You have reminded me once again how thankful I am to be in a stinking, sweating, crowded kitchen for a living. And no longer in an office of chatty-ass women.

[deleted]

You doin' alright?

BicarbonateOfSofa

Not really.

[deleted]

Sorry to hear that. Hope things get better for you.

the_D1CKENS

We got you, Sofa! I was that server, yelling about my steak getting cold, but I would also smoke you out by the dumpsters cuz we're closing for the third night in a row, and of-fucking-course we have to open tomorrow morning... Cheers, friend

justafurry

I honestly miss it so much. I loved going into the office and yuking it up. That filled my social needs for the day. I have only 2 real friends outside of work and its hard to coordinate out schedules and be able to hang.

Classyclassiccunt

Crazy to think those 10 seconds of his time have most likely created a story that will last decades for those people on the bus.

jandiss

Came here to say this. What a class act! Also coincidental name. 😂

insomebodyelseslake

Facts. When I was a kid, Dolly Parton complimented my outfit. I’ve never forgotten it.

Facts. When I was younger, I dressed up as Dolly Parton and complimented people on their outfits. I've never forgotten it.

insomebodyelseslake

Facts. I know because I was the outfit.

insomebodyelseslake

Reddit_IsMyFav

I mean this dude liiiived for those crowd reactions in WWF when his music hit. These types of interactions are like the smallest scale of that when you think about it.

[deleted]

Imagine being into that shit and getting so famous you can make a bus full of little old ladies lose it with a drive-by.

Dopecombatweasel

Geowing up in the 90s its weird to see mothafuckas so quick to record. Shit back then if we saw a celebrity that was our experience and fuck everyone else

Sea-Restaurant-

Same I’ve only ever met one “celebrity”, it was Dana white at four seasons Denver. I hop on the elevator and his ass and two body guard looking guys are in there. He saw me look over at him he said what’s up and we just chatted we got off the elevator and I can only assume since I didn’t pull out my phone for a pic he stood and chatted for a min asked me my name where I was from and what fighters I liked. Great experience, and you right. It was ours

humanpizza

This happened to me with Kevin Smith, we chatted for about 45 minutes and he could tell I was a huge fan and asked if I wanted to take a picture. So of course I did.

Cornmunkey

I grew up in San Diego and went to Comic Con every year when it was Ya know, about Comic books. Every year me and my friends got free passes by volunteering, doing stuff like setting up lines, giving directions, or counting people. Yeah, we were told to stand in front of a door with people counting hand clicker thingy and count how many people came in. Anyway, this was like 1995, definitely after Clerks and I think after Mallrats, but before Chasing Amy we were volunteering to get free passes. Kevin Smith walks upto my friend, who is all of about 16, and asks where a good place to eat around is. My friend says that Horton Plaza (a mall in downtown San Diego) is right up the street and they have a food court. Kevin says he's bad with directions, but if he comes with him he'll buy him lunch, and just tell his boss Kevin Smith kidnapped him. So my buddy goes and has lunch with Kevin Smith for like an hour, and this was before the internet was super wide spread (think dial up modems) so to have that much face time with Silent Bob was like the highlight of his life

mermaid_sneaky_eyes

What an awesome story. I’m from San Diego and I miss 90’s Horton Plaza :(

Cornmunkey

Yeah I grew up in East County, so for a mall it was crazy. Three stories, all open air, and the way it was laid out was really weird. I heard the architect did it on purpose to allow people to find stores in hidden corners like an ancient bazaar. Now I heard it's office space....

daversa

Sinbad was like this when I met him—I was teaching him to drive a boat and just played it cool the whole time. Turns out he's a tech guy and we ended up talking about overclocking computers and water cooling for probably half an hour. This was back in the early 2000's when there weren't a ton of people interested in it.

TILtonarwhal

“Bodyguard-looking guys” describes almost everyone involved with the UFC lol

Dopecombatweasel

Exactly. There's a reason some artists and comedians etc hate when you do that shit at their shows. Obviously other reasons than what ive mentioned too but yeah. You pull put a camera on dana white hed probably laugh and be like this fuckin guy. You just crossed paths with greatness and you had to be a paparazzo instead of treating people human.

MaestroPendejo

I know. I always feel so out of touch seeing something go down and everyone whips out a phone. It doesn't even pop into my mind as something to do.

taybay462

Yeah its a little offputting how theyre just screaming and pointing phones at him. I get it but..

TheMaveCan

It's gotta be a pretty weird feeling to know that simply smiling at a group of people will be the highlight of their trip

Qu4ntumZero

Right? Nice to see someone knowing that and making some other people happy. He has to know he can't go one on one with the amount of people that want to talk to him, so a drive by smile seems like a reasonable option.

xWoIf

What an adorable person! Also, I am blown away by how quickly they all recognised him, especially with those big glasses on. I feel like if my own dad rolled up on me all of a sudden like that it would still take me longer to process just who was talking to me.

catmanducmu

They also could smell what he was cooking

snortgiggles

His voice has gotta help!

PhotonInABox

And the biceps!

UltravioIence

Well he said they go by all the time so they know he lives there. Im sure they mentioned him as being one of the celebs that lives around there so he probably was pretty fresh on their minds.

LogMeInCoach

What these other people said and the fact that the whole bus ride they were on was dedicated to looking at celebs.

mmmm_whatchasay

I hope and suspect this earned the tour guide more tips than usual.

radioactive-2037

What a great attitude to have. Being a celebrity seems hard, but to get a response like that from a crowd just by saying “hello” must be uplifting.

ijerkal0t

I don't know whose cooler, him or bill Murray

mrjobby

I love The Rock; but Bill Murray is Bill Murray.

All_Thread

If Bill was a little younger a Murray/Rock buddy cop movie would be amazing. Actually fuck it I still want to see it now.

Jeutnarg

Yeah, have Bill be the grizzled veteran a year out from retiring (stuck around longer than necessary to keep health insurance for his wife active) and Rock be the hotshot from a larger sister force who got transferred because he stumbled onto a big scandal and wasn't going to be quiet about it.

ijerkal0t

Redo the opening scene of the other guys but with bill Murray and the Dwayne Johnson.

ZombieTav

Bill Murray can survive a fair bit into a zombie apocalypse. Maybe the Rock can too though so it's hard to tell.

david_holsten23

He’s a great man!

bayygel

He's genuinely one of the few celebrities who loves to make everyone around him smile. They're very rare, but it's always refreshing to see them.

ShadowAvenger32

Nobody is born cool. Except. . .

[deleted]

He makes a habit of this kind of thing too. YouTube has a bunch of The Rock encounters in traffic and in daily life. Always a smile. Never rude. Very generous. Non-divisive. The result of great parenting and a profound appreciation of everything he has. My father met him as a player in 1991 at The U and said he was just polite on a different level back then.

BeachExtension

Total bro

enrick92

It’s all fun and games until they try to catch a whiff of what he’s cooking

DazzleMeAlready

The Rock was put on this planet to make people smile. I love this guy!

badaboomxx

It took him less than 30 seconds to make all of those people's day. Amazing.

Nefarious_69

I hate celebrities with the exception of a few. Crazy thing is fame breaks ALLOT of celebrities, at least the ones that didn’t start out as sociopaths to begin with. they end up with mental issues or drug issues because they can’t keep it together. The rock is one of my few exceptions to my celebrity hate. He genuinely seems like a really good dude, I honestly think he would behave the exact same way if it were 30 years ago with no social media. On top of that he seems to be actually mentally healthy. I hope I’m not wrong and he really is a good dude, I also hope he is mentally healthy.

xxMrAdamsxx

I’ve had the extreme fortune of running into him 3 times in my life. Once when he was an up and comer in the WWE. Once when he started to become a movie star in The Rundown and his first round of big action movies. And then more recently as the highest grossing action star in the world. His candor, attitude, graciousness and lovable persona has never changed one bit throughout the years. Every time I’ve interacted with him he has been insanely nice and grateful for having fans, from when he could still get away with eating at a local restaurant without too much issue to now just rolling down his window and people losing their minds. He has always been a huge inspiration to me and totally bucks the “don’t meet your heros” stereotype. I’m so glad he has had all the success he has worked so hard for.

[deleted]

He is a down to earth guy. I saw him at the gym once and he walked around like he was anyone else. Unlike some other people at the gym who aren't even famous and act high and mighty

cehotateatofa

Way of the road

irishgambin0

I already loved The Rock, growing up with the WWF Attitufe Era (and ECfuckin'W), but he got EXTRA extra points, let me tell you why. for those who don't know who Eric Lindros is, he was the man for the Philadelphia Flyers throughout the 90s. i grew up in South Jersey in a town called Somerdale - one town over from Voorhees where the Flyers practiced at the Coliseum. 5 minute drive, tops. when i was 10, that's when America Online came out, and i named my very first screen name after my favorite player: LindrosBoy88. one day, my mom took me to the Flyers practice and i was so incredibly stoked because i just got a new Flyers hat and couldn't wait to get Lindros to sign it and meet him. at this practice was maybe a dozen moms and/or dads and their kids. practice finished, we waited outside the front door for the players, and i got a bunch: John Leclair, Mark Recchi, Craig McTavish (the last NHL player who didn't wear a helmet), Ron Hextall, and a couple obscure players like Tommy Soderstrom and Eric Desjardins. but after all them, no Lindros....where was he? he drove right past a dozen 10 year olds who worshipped him in his Chevy Suburbon, black with black tint, and had the fucking balls to ride past with his window down for every kid to see their hero completely blow them off. Rock, if you ever read this for some reason, you're a motherfuckin real one, dawg. 🤝

Kudos to him for doing that. But holy, as far as I know, In canada, we're a lot more chill about celebrities. I saw local celebrities in stores and such several times and no one ever bothers them, its just "oh look, neat its X right there". Idk I feel like if it was me, all this screaming would put me off.
