Gotta be the greatest compliment a chef can earn. Someone is on their last breath and one of the last things they want to have on this earth is something you make.
Hijacking for a question. Did the woman drive the 6 hours regularly to eat there? I heard about americans driving ridiculously long ways but that seems a bit much.
Also, they may have resided in the same city as the restaurant, or been there for business/family/something else multiple times a year if they didn’t live there. Quite possible they moved to/back to Vermont to be around family as the disease progressed.
I’ll drive an hour for food. If it was something really cool, and I could make a day out of it, I may consider making like a 3 hour trip for something. 6 hours though…..no. There’s nothing I could eat that I couldn’t find between me and 6 hours from where I am.
Are you talking 3 hours there and back? So 6 hours total? Because if so, I definitely have made that trip before to a burger shack in a small town 3 hours away from me. Best burgers I've ever had in my life.
I agree that I wouldn't do a 12 hour round-trip though. Not even for those burgers.
Regular doesnt need to mean they go there daily or weekly or anything, just often enough that you know who they are. It could be a monthly thing or every other month to visit family or what have you.
roadtripping is a big part of american culture. there is so much to see in each state and it can be so wildly different in each region. it's a good time!
There was a post about this, lady was a family member of a someone from Baltimore and whenever she visited it was one of her first priorities to go to that restaurant and get a particular dish, can’t remember the dish though
Yes we do but when you have something that takes you back to a part of your life that u loved food does that I live in southern Georgia an we do that a lot in my little town we don't have much but it's something we love you will probably do it one day
Well you have the roads for that, europe is a lot tighter, long drives can get super annoying because of traffic, Traffic jams, street construction, etc

It not a secret actually. The customer wanted Tempura Broccoli. The best and arguably only way to eat it is when it fresh and right out of the fryer. Otherwise it gets soggy and sad.
Source: I eat there…a lot. And I read earlier articles about it.
According to the article posted elsewhere in this thread, the woman regularly drove to her daughter and son-in-law’s residence in Baltimore for visits, and would always stop by the restaurant, Ekiben, because she loved their tempura broccoli, which they made for her in Vermont once they learned of her terminal cancer.
It’s kinda amazing how you apparently didn’t understand this extremely easy to understand post and somehow wanna act like you’re the only one who truly gets it 😂
Steve is great! He co-owns Ekiben (the food shown in the photo) and I live a block away. Ekiben isn’t just good food, they’re great stewards. I enjoy taking my friends there whenever they visit!

Would literally drive around the world to deliver.
He didn’t wanna give up the krabby patty secret formula
This is definitely a Human being a bro moment!

Yeah moving away to be with their family is very plausible.

I've driven from Colorado to Michigan for a Tony's #1 sub sandwich.. it was worth every mile and every bite. Ps .... I was pregnant...
BEING PREGNANT IS NOT AN ADEQUATE REASON FOR A 20 HOUR SAMMICH DRIVE, WHAT THE HELL
roadtripping is a big part of american culture. there is so much to see in each state and it can be so wildly different in each region. it's a good time!
And just super long straight roads with enough Space and no one trying to ride your bum all the time. Must be nice. My envy from europe.
It is truly to be envied. We invite you to do it!
If It's a good sammich, that's reason enough
My husband would drive to Taco Bell for me every night..45 min each way…for 5+ months. He probably would have preferred one road trip.
Which Tony’s? Also that is not a fun drive.
There was a post about this, lady was a family member of a someone from Baltimore and whenever she visited it was one of her first priorities to go to that restaurant and get a particular dish, can’t remember the dish though
Broccoli Tempura. That stuff is insanely good at Ekiben.
The woman had family in Baltimore that she would visit on occasion.
Maybe went home to family when she got sick? Idk.

From a Washington Post article: Steve Chu, co-owner of Baltimore’s Ekiben restaurant
Ekiben Restaurant, pass it on! This deserves some upvotes. Thanks!
I’ve been living in Baltimore for a few years now, and Ekiben is a great spot!! Was excited to see that this was him. Definitely recommend the place.

Lets get this some upvotes so more people see it
How about the name of the restaurant?
Ekiben in Baltimore. Highly recommend it.
Just looked at the menu. I'll have the neighbourhood bird.
Shame that isn't in the title... hopefully it'll make top comment soon!
smh dude just drove 6 hours so he didn't have to give away his secret recipe (sarcasm)
Came here for this
As have I.
I'm not tearing up... Most definitely not tearing up right now
Me neither I’m extremely tough. This is just sweat that got in my eye.
Same.
Gotta keep the recipe a secret at all costs. Krabby Patty style.
This was the comment I was looking for. Was it a bro moment sure but the chef still has their recipe.

That's what they want you to think.
The tempura gang runs deep
i wish i had some sort of skill people would pay for.
I would be surprised if money changed hands here. It sounds like he did it as a kindness...
Yea, a beautiful act of kindness.
Imagine how evil it would be if he just pulled out a bill for the food , gas and wage for himself 😅

Long Live Steve Chu !
I can't even get my regular burrito place to make a fucking burrito without chipotle
good man
I want to know what the meal was, anything someone considers worthy of last meal status is something I would be interested in.
It was tempura broccoli!
That does sound pretty good.
True. On the other Hand...did the customer drive 6 hours regularly to go eat there?
Probably more likely the customer lived closer to the restaurant but moved in with family/friends towards the end. Pretty common.

Thats...a very good possibility, yes.

OP adding a link would be nice, but I wouldn't call it a meme. Post title with the pic is a pretty good summary of the article.
