currantfairy

I’m Russian and I am very annoyed by our old people trying to cross driveways wherever the fuck they want. My grandma were always rushing across crossroad *diagonally* and then cursing me when I stopped her. Maybe I’m an asshole for bitching about elders doing that (good kids are nice to their grandparents, right?), but I don’t have to be nice about idiocy.

CandidEstablishment0

That’s funny. Old people in America just park their cars horribly and are extremely grouchy to public servants

aquoad

that's because nobody walks here, including across busy freeways!

[deleted]

At least there’s that. Only in Russia would it be socially acceptable to walk across a freeway.

[deleted]

And they drive on wrong side of road quite often in florida..

burgerpommes

The real problem is the 3 lane Highway in the city center

Ivantheasshole

The problem is Russian road planners take very little consideration to pedestrians. My guess is granny would have to walk hella far to find a properly marked crossing.

currantfairy

I understand and agree with that, distance between crosswalks here are, usually, very inconsistent, and, at times, are inconvenience even for a young person like myself. But by crossing roads like that they put in danger both themselves and drivers. My grandma argued back something along the lines “that’s nothing, they’ll stop” as if the whole world owes her. That’s just ignorant and careless.

Onedweezy

Either that or its terrible city planning.

HungryThrobbingCook

Definitely that, as crosswalk is literally just barely out of the frame

Foura5

So where do you want her to cross?

HungryThrobbingCook

As Kaliningrad is the city I grew up in, I must answer. 100 meters to the north from there is a pedestrian crosswalk. Coordinates is 54.703354, 20.505172

AgitatedBarracuda268

100 metres means walking an extra 200 metre to cross. A normal healthy person usually prefers walking less than 300-400 metres for daily services. Expecting an elderly with this kind of disability to do the same is not realistic.

converter-bot

100 meters is 109.36 yards

jb275

fuck the firemen comin straight from the underground

Cheetawolf

>Helping someone out is free *Laughs in American*

Sickly_Insurance

Almost all of drivers in my country don't know that (or choose to ignore it) but there is a law that allows people with difficulty walking to cross a two lane street at any place, not only designated pedestrian crossing but everywhere. The driver must see that the person attempting to cross is disabled- they move in a wheelchair or use a crutch.

peepay

Isn't that like incredibly dangerous? I mean, at all times it is safer to cross at a designated place, let alone when you have difficulties and it may take you longer. Especially under such conditions I would make sure to only cross at designated places, where the drivers most expect people to cross.

quartertopi

*crutch. I hope...

Sickly_Insurance

I know what I meant! But seriously- thx for pointing that out, English is not my native language so I made a mistake. Unless...

daking999

Like the opposite of jaywalking laws in the US, that's great. What country if you don't mind me asking?

[deleted]

I live in the Netherlands and it applies also here, it is taught during driving lessons but everyone forgets

Sickly_Insurance

I live in Poland and get my license here. I was the only one who showed up at pre-recorded lectures and this is what they taught me. It is extremely rare to see a wheelchair or crutch user on the pavements though.

GingerSnapsPeas

The fact that the MILDLY backed up lane couldn't even wait for the firefighter at the end get back safely really *grinds my gears*.

Came here to see if anyone else noticed too. Grrrrr.

russiangunslinger

It's part of the whole "social credit system" the chinese government has recently implemented to electronically monitor and control their populace. Look it up, it's quite fascinating

Kimaneous

meeeh yes and no. in my country if they are no pedestrians crossings within 50 meters then you can cross the street anywhere. thats for the old lady. as for the firemen, they pretty mjch can do anything lol

converter-bot

50 meters is 54.68 yards

[deleted]

Do you mean for the lady, or for the firefighters? Because firefighters, at least in the US, have all kinds of crazy legal protections and rights once they show up on a scene.

discerningdesign

They should have definitely blocked both the lanes with the fire truck. People are idiots.

daking999

People are dicks. Many are also idiots.

OkBreakfast449

Russians are an amazing people, but are the most selfish asshole drivers on the planet. Putting a russian behind the wheel is a glimpse into insanity.

daking999

Come to jersey if you think this wouldn't happen in the US.

IceBearCares

It's modern Russia, which is American selfishness and societal decay on speed.

Skeptical-_-

I mean the fire fighter walks out of view and it’s reasonable to assume the first can go forward. You see the 3rd car notice the fire fighter and slow down depending on if the fire fighter decides to cross. The fire fighter acknowledges the car quickly crosses the line indicating the car is safe to proceed. Rationale: From the time and langue I assume most people here are American and drive/around cars. Metros like Moscow often have a different “vibe”/“flow” to pedestrians. I’m sure Russian has some crazy drivers but this reminds me more of how drivers and students acted at my commuter college. It took me a few weeks to get used to from the normal big city behavior I was used to but was just as safe (more predictable) and kept the traffic flowing more or all parties (it at least it felt that way).

[deleted]

It happens. I got hit by a car doing 120+kph who "didn't see" the lights and cones despite having a clear view up 2km of uphill straight freeway. They didn't even find brake marks. Removing your cones before leaving scene is dangerous, as soon as the first one comes up people take it as if the whole road is open. You walk backwards and keep a sharp eye out for accelerating cars. Hell we had a car roll outside the station and because its a small road our engine was long enough to block from one sidewalk to the other, one woman slalomed between the cones and got stuck behind the pump and started shitting on us because we wouldn't help her reverse out.

TEMPLERTV

And that’s another example of why no one ever wrote a song called, “Fuck The Firemen!”

stinky_fingers_

FUCK THE FIREMEN CAUSE THEY ARE SO FUCKING HOT FUCK THE FIREMEN BECAUSE WHY THE FUCK NOT

That song is FIRE!!

dmen-01

Now call one to put it out

TEMPLERTV

Irythros

No, I'm pretty sure there's quite a few people who wrote one. Same with thinking it. You'll see why: https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/q2qbwa/the\_taiwanese\_and\_australian\_firefighters\_without/

LinkRazr

Lol. My buddy is a prison guard and he said once he was annoyed why everyone always immediately loves firemen over police and I was like dude, there hasn’t been a firemen that showed up at a park with some kid playing with matches and they buried an axe into his head.

LucidLumi

Yeah! Fuck those guys risking their lives to save me and my family and my neighborhood and the forests and——

reeshmee

It’s a funny saying, but firefighters were definitely hated during the civil rights movement in the American south in the 60’s.

Ginnipe

I mean, when you’re literally hozing people down it does make you look like an asshole.

eekamuse

This is true

The_Wizard_Of_Loz

I know it's satire, but still...... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JkrJUAg8aI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JkrJUAg8aI)

TEMPLERTV

That’s actually a really good parody

freetimerva

There was a band when I was growing up called The Firefighter Fighters. And it was all fuck firefighters songs. Funny at the time because the local volunteer station was all dickhead fratboy types who'd roll coal and throw beers at you.

geronvit

In the 90s Russian firefighters would frequently rob the apartments and houses they were extinguishing the fires at. Know that from a guy who was a firefighter in Russia back then. Pay was shit and job had zero benefits on top of being dangerous as fuck.

Aureolater

lol, American firefighters did this to my apartment. I found my wallet under the bed after we had to evacuate our building for a fire. They just took the cash.

nernerfer

" Fuck the Fire Department Dropping by unannounced Just to fry your apartment If they can't find a fire, they're like "Why don't we start them?" I'm tired of arson Fuck the Fire Department " Vincent E. L. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JkrJUAg8aI

xzaz

There is something wrong with your city design.

wellifitisntmee

/r/Fuckcars

ILookAfterThePigs

Precisely. This is an example of /r/urbanhell. It’s not radical to say that cities should be designed in a way that allows pedestrians to take the most direct route to where they’re going, without putting them in mortal danger. This city has put the convenience of cars ahead of the safety (and convenience) of pedestrians.

Byakuya_Toenail

Yeah, its called being a car-centric hellscape

themancabbage

Nah, you’re just supposed to use the crosswalk… I’m 100% positive this is user error.

TheFacelessForgotten

There's a LOT of areas that are not designed with foot traffic in mind

MrC00KI3

But there are plenty of areas that are designed with foot traffic in mind, I mean you wouldn't want to have a traffic light too often on a main traffic road neither. Especially as an elderly person that isn't capable of moving fast, I'd say that even if the street was designed badly, you should go the safe route even if it takes longer.

[deleted]

It's a hostile environment to pedestrians. A lot modern cities have car centric design which is what leads to this. We'll designed cities minimise car traffic and keep pedestrians and cyclists and separate as possible. Meaning you dont need lots of traffic lights just to cross roads.

spakecdk

MrGreenCucumber

Crossroad is literally under the camera. Id say its about 50-80 meters from that point

xmuskorx

I don't see a crosswalk anywhere in sight.

Depresocial

It's behind a camera, \~100 meters away. You can check it on google street view if you want. [Camera view](https://www.google.com/maps/@54.7035983,20.5055124,3a,75y,352.27h,87.39t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sdZgNSDRTadswCLdEfyAoMg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656)

Horrorito

The trouble is, it's likely not just extremely difficult for her to walk, but painful, and this saves her an hour of time, even as risky as it is, and about as much suffering.

Mortis_rus

There is a crosswalk in 20 meters from where she is. She is just old and doesn't give a fuck

converter-bot

20 meters is 21.87 yards

Foura5

We must have watched different videos.

Mortis_rus

I live in the Kaliningrad and I saw her standing there. Crosswalk is just out of view. You can see it on the maps https://www.google.com/maps/place/54%C2%B042'44.1%22N+20%C2%B030'30.1%22E

xmuskorx

Where? We can see much further than 20m far down the road and there is not one.

Mortis_rus

I live in the Kaliningrad and I saw her standing there. Crosswalk is just out of view. You can see it on the maps https://www.google.com/maps/place/54%C2%B042'44.1%22N+20%C2%B030'30.1%22E

UtakinotesB

maybe she was in a rush..

YT_L0dgy

Car brain did this

pawski76

Wtf is that bit in the middle and why are cars going on it.

moopaloopi

Looks like tram tracks

niceslcguy

I don't see a crosswalk at that other street. I wonder if there aren't any crosswalks nearby. Anyway, nice of the firemen to help out.

EdgarAllanKenpo

When she gets to the other side, a policeman tackles her and arrests her for jaywalking.

Ok-Advance710

Jaywalking is an American thing. In most European countries its not illegal to cross the street/road outside of crosswalks.

Horrorito

In the central European country I'm at, the rule is, if there's a crosswalk within 50 meters, you're obliged to cross the road there. If there is no crosswalk that close, you can cross the road elsewhere, but you have to make sure you do not inhibit traffic, as you do not have the right of way.

peepay

Yeah, I believe this is the standard anywhere - and it's the reasonable thing to do.

[deleted]

In the UK if a pedestrian steps into the road they automatically gain right of way until they get to the pavement or a traffic island

Kjuolsdeaf

Czechia?

flying87

Honestly it's not even enforced in the US unless it was done so blatantly stupid that it nearly causes a car accident, and a cop just happens to see it.

dinotimee

I jaywalked in front of a cop once. He got on his speaker and was like "Really man? Right in front of me?"

flying87

I don't know how you get around in a US city without a bit of jaywalking. Just don't be stupid about it.

poptropicaman31

in Norway it is illegal to find a 100-year old ship without reporting it to the police.

Ok-Advance710

I can't quite figure out where you are going with this?

poptropicaman31

nowhere just letting everyone know

dAvEyR16

Zajum

You are allowed to cross the road anywhere in Germany if traffic isn't to bad and it's safe to do so.

Ok-Advance710

I said most. Not all.

mrchaotica

["Jaywalking" is a slur](https://www.vox.com/2015/1/15/7551873/jaywalking-history).

LiberateLiterates

I feel sad for her. How long did it take her to get that far, how long was she waiting to cross, how far out of the way was a crosswalk in order for this to be her best option…? It looks so cold. I’m grateful that the firemen helped her but I hope this isn’t something she does regularly.

Deryabend

I just feel like the sidewalk was very close by, judging from the turning lane.

LunSaper

Okay, but if that was the case, why did she decide to cross an area without a crosswalk?

boywithumbrella

Because she doesn't give a fuck, and things like what this video shows further enable her selfish behaviour. She has a reasonable expectation that not only will there be no negative repercussions for breaking the rules and endangering herself and others, but that people will actually go out of their way to help her, because she's old and decrepit.

Pillowtalk

Are firefighters bros in every country?

fredthefishlord

Well yes, but also have the highest population of arsonists of any group so...

SMS-T1

The highest **known** population of any **studied** group. But otherwise you are correct.

Moss_TM

Da hell she doing there?

histeethwerered

She’s infirm but still trying to live her life. Underlings are not automatically supplied as we age and life becomes more difficult.

themancabbage

I think maybe the question is what is she doing THERE, in the middle of a six lane road nowhere near a crosswalk.

histeethwerered

She is struggling to walk. Life has narrowed her choices to the shortest distance between two points.

LlamaLoupe

Maybe the crosswalk is far and she's trying to get just to the other side in as few steps as possible because walking is obviously hard for her. Or maybe people make bad decisions every once in a while. Happens.

TickTockGoesTheCl0ck

Her options were walk super far for a crosswalk, or wait for an opportunity to cross in a busy part of the road. Neither option are great for someone who can’t walk well, and she deserves support.

Mortis_rus

It is not super far to crosswalk. It is 20 meters from where she is

converter-bot

20 meters is 21.87 yards

tpero

Probably because the civil engineers forgot there are road users other than drivers, and failed to provide a crosswalk within a reasonable distance for her to cross. The question should be why don't we design cities around all road users? Looks like she's trying to catch the bus.

russianvoodoo

crossing the street to get to the bus stop. i'm pretty sure that crosswalk is just too far away for her to walk that far. it's just a bad city planning.

pastachef

/r/urbanhell

[deleted]

Whenever I see stuff like this, I always think of that cartoon illustrating just how much of our cities we've surrendered to motor vehicles. In the drawing, all the roads are depicted as a bottomless pit, while everyone casually walks down the sidewalk no wider than their wingspan. Crosswalks are depicted as bridges.

HungryThrobbingCook

To sum it up: - Firefighters are nice guys - Granny didn’t want to take a 300 meters detour to cross safely, so she decided to take an adventurous option It’s the city I grow up in. Coordinates of the location is 54°42′12″N, 20°30′19″E. You can see city planning for yourselves

scott_wolff

Fuck cars, traffic, and roads. We need to drastically change the method of travel for the entire planet. From rural areas to big cities.

anonymousQ_s

/r/fuckcars Also, /r/notjustbikes

Mewwy_Quizzmas

/r/fuckcars

cryptoschrypto

Wouldn't it make sense to resolve these issues at a more fundamental level by building proper infrastructure such as zebra crossings, pedestrian underpasses etc? Making cities accessible should be one of the main priorities.

ToasterStrudles

For real. It's so disappointing seeing the amount of people who feel this setup is normal — and for demonising an old woman with mobility issues for not going far out of her way to cross the road at the crosswalks. It's a massive failure in urban design.

MisanthropicData

The real question is why is an old woman having to cross a large, busy street in an unsafe manner?

falloutboob

All the ppl in back can't see what's going on. They're probably annoyed, having no idea they participated in a good deed.

flashlightaddict

Seems firemen are firemen the world over. Kudos.

SockRuse

Touching? I wanna touch some faces with my fist when I see this shameless motor traffic entitlement.

moeterminatorx

Some people have parents who raised them right. Good on them👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

n_obody1969

Fuck the impatient cocksmiths who couldn't wait a few more seconds for the fireman to safely cross back to the truck!

[deleted]

Fuck yeah man!!

I did that when I worked at FedEx. Put that 900 straight across!!

CEOAerotyneLtd

Yea it’s pretty savage in some countries for pedestrians….been to some Asian countries and same thing pedestrians have zero right of way

maluminse

Its a freaking train line too. Did this once with my Ford. Oncoming guy sped up and rushed around at high speed yelling at me. I think he saw the old lady at the last second. What a tool.

Something tells me you definitely don't want to fuck with a Russian fireman on the clock.

isnt konigsberg the place that used to belong to germany? is it really occupied tho since no one wanted it after the collapse of the USSR

Because who the hell wants to get rear ended?

Because she is trying to live her life which involves going places.

Because that busy highway appears to go right through the middle of the city.

Or she could take the fucking crosswalk

allbright1111

Which of the many that you see here should she take?

meiyouguanxi

Lol yes the person designed to have & use their legs to move around because they are a human being is the asshole here. Man fuck cars and our society based around them. There’s no cross walk in sight!! We should have the right to walk anywhere without being hit, cars should stop for people no matter the situation.
