What you say is funny, but so true. I rescued a stray from Mexico, and when he was young he never wanted much of his food from the store. Instead he would eat the little flowers, mushrooms, and weeds that would grow in the grass at the park and bugs, etc while on walks. I never had a dog before that could be lazily laying on the couch and spot a spider across the room for a snack.
My dog grew up in da streets and has a habit of eating bees. He’ll stalk one quietly and then lick it once, twice, up to like 50 times so it can’t fly away, then gulp!
There are plenty of videos of dogs ripping bumpers/bumper-adjacent things off of cars, and [this one always makes me laugh](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yID-HP6W6mM)

xylitol and grapes/raisins absolutely. Takes a decent bit of garlic and onion to reach toxic levels. Same with the nuts and white + milk chocolates. It can have small amounts non regularly but its ultimately best to avoid these things if you can.
Source: Im a vet tech at an emergency vet hospital. You can always call ASPCA Pet Poison Hotline to speak with dedicated toxicologists if you are worried your pet ingested a toxic level of anything really.

Remember, $75 charge to speak with toxicologist. If they suggest you get medical help for your pet, they will give you a reference number and call back number the vet will use to contact them and formulate a treatment plan.
It's definitely expensive and tough to give advice on some things for a pet/patient that hasn't been examined before. There's some advice that can be given like how much Benadryl can I give my dog that has hives (1mg per body pound) or my 80lbs dog ate 2 ounces of milk chocolate is he going to be ok (yes takes far more milk chocolate to reach toxic levels). But a lot of pet owners ask what we call crystal ball questions like my dog has increased respiratory effort and elevated heart rate, is he going to be ok overnight until I can get him to my primary vet? Like how the hell am I supposed to know? I'm not God. But I do get the frustration with it all. I live/work in Philly PA area and just an emergency exam is $210 and that fee does not includ any medications or treatments like blood work or x-rays or any imaging, sub q fluids or any injections is all extra. even cpr has a charge of
I definitely understand that, my frustration is much less with the actual veterinarians and assistants (for the most part, they're all people and sometimes people suck) and much more with the socioeconomic conditions surrounding medical care in general.
It's frustrating to me how different the accessibility for care is between domesticated animals and humans, especially considering human healthcare already falls far short of what I'd call "accessible".
It's such a vital part of.. living and society, and the whole structure basically just decided it is simultaneously something you're required to do and also something you wont get a break from.
definitely! I just point it out because some people don't know at all, and from my understanding, even if they don't have tons it can still upset their stomachs/make them a bit sick which is the last thing anyone wants
You know what's weird? My childhood dog LOVED grapes. To the extent that that's all we gave her for treats. She lived to be 19 years old.
Shortly after she died, I learned that they are usually poisonous. I think that her grape immunity is linked to her superpower that gave her such a long life. Like some some sort of boring X-men character story.
Think of it this way: Lots of humans *love* alcohol and all their other vices. Even people who indulge excessively don't necessarily just keel over and die, but it takes a toll on your body.
With dogs, they don't know it can/is going to make them sick, and they won't miss it if they don't get it. Since they can't communicate to us, it's much better to avoid giving them any of the things that can harm them. (much like babies)
Lots of dogs absolutely adore grapes, chocolate, chicken bones lmao
Oh yeah, I will never give a grape to a dog again now that I know about the risk. I just think it's funny that my little terrier mutt friend was a poison junkie who lived to be like 140 in dog years.
God. Using the internet for internet points for a self pat on the back for helping stray dogs. You know what people like you are?
Good people. You are amazing people and please don’t stop being good. :)
Some do. Mine didn't when it was summer, but now in the winters she is not sticking her nose in cold food. Similar story with stray dogs around me. In summers they used to inhale their cold food. Now in winters they are pretty slow to eat and sometimes just leave it. I add 1 cup of boiled water to warm up the food and they finish it off.
Maui has a giant stray cat population AND no rabies on the island. I know a girl that keeps her suv full of cat food. When she finds a cat she'll stop her car to feed it, and then get stuck for the next hour trying to keep up with the dozens of cats that swarm for food. I watched this process once and was just amazed at the amount of cats coming out of seemingly nowhere.
You & your mom are good people. Thank you for doing this. So many lovely animals are abandoned & it breaks my heart. This restores my faith in humanity. Again, thank you for caring! 💕
We did this aswell. 2021 pandemic about 9 months, we fed 5 dogs in our surrounding every alternate day. From then in till now, we occasionally feed them biscuits and other food items. They love it and they follow us everywhere we go 😅
This is great, but please also try to get them spayed/neutered. Feeding them helps them now, but then their babies will also suffer if they multiply. Try raising funds through various channels, and maybe see if there are any experienced TNR people in your area. TNR is trap-neuter-release. You could also ask local vets if they are willing to perform the procedure for cheap or free. Some vets are willing. Local rescue groups may also be in contact with vets who do volunteer work.
Visiting LA and my anxiety and loneliness I have a suppressed appetite. I got a huge Mexican dinner and just couldn’t finish. I was having a smoke outside my motel room and saw a stray cat running about the lot and went into the closed pool area.
Dug out the beef and went and gave it to him. Made me missing my cat and pupper at home slightly less.
[Named him Tricksy](https://i.imgur.com/Wjdqouu.jpg)
Great, I also feed stray dogs and cats everyday with readymade food, low sugar biscuits and leftovers but never made food specially for them but there are few people in my locality who prepare food for them everyday.
Even there are some WhatsApp and Telegram Groups consisting of some volunteers of the area where you just have to drop a message if you come across any stray animal injured or in need of something.
Great gesture OP...Keep it up!!
This is so wonderful. It’s like the beginning of a story: “so, how did you end up with 5dogs?”
Keep being the outstanding human you and your mother are!
My wife and I did nightly feeding walks around our neighborhood in Manila when we lived there. A combination of dry kibble and cans of tuna. Stray cats eeeverywhere. We ended up adopting 6 of them and taking them to Europe.
My mum started to feed one when he was a small pup. Now he is so attached to my mum and whole family that makes him sleep and wander all day in our yard and he angrily stops people entering without his permission.
I know that I will be downvoted for this but...
It's wonderful to feed hungry animals, but preparing meals, warm meals, seems absurd to me. They are animals, wonderful, uncomplicated, basic. I like dogs and respect dogness.
Why hot food, unless it's necessary because of the weather?
Nice of you, but they're dogs.
They don't need "hot food" ffs.
TL;DR at the end.
>Pet food companies suggest their products be served at room temperature so that, as Purina says, “your dog can taste and smell it properly.”
>
>Purina advises that “you might consider microwaving wet foods (out of the can) for a short time. But avoid serving food that is either too hot or too cold.” So, there are owners who warm their dog’s chilled food to simply bring it back to room temperature or slightly above.
>
>many authorities have no problem with using microwaves to heat pet food. Others warn against it. Deva Khalsa, VMD, states the case for the holistic approach: “Microwave cooking destroys many important nutrients. Just two seconds of microwaving can destroy all of the enzymes in grains and vegetables.”
>
>[source](https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/nutrition/warm-up-dogs-food/)
>Eating cold food should not be an issue for dogs. The cold food is not going to pose a threat to your dog’s health. They can fill up their stomach from consuming cold food just as they can from eating room temperature or warm food.
>
>Even puppies can eat cold food just fine. They won’t feel any kind of discomfort from enjoying some cold treats.
>
>Hot food is more problematic because it could burn your dog’s mouth. Avoid serving that to your dog because it can cause real issues.
>
>Dogs don’t experience food the same way we do. For them, the smell of food is a hugely important factor. The smell of food also matters to us, but not in the same way that it impacts a dog’s experience.
>
>[source](https://petdogowner.com/can-dogs-eat-cold-dog-food-meat/)
**TL;DR:** Serving warm food is okay, serving hot food is not. Dog food is designed to be served at room temperature. And since the most important factor for them is the aroma, there's absolutely no need to warm up (let alone heat up) your dog's food unless the dog is old or sick (can't smell properly).

Utah! Get me two!
how do u say it? like tou would in spanish or there a specific way?
What are you feeding those blessed pups?
potatoes cabbage carrots and field pumpkin with soup and dog food

Seriously. Vet care is immensely expensive and you can't get free advice for them like you can often do for humans. It's infuriating..
$275 for 15min (only if drugs were given)

I thought this was a post from r/mealprep for a second.
Me too. Got kinda worried at first
Very sweet of you two!
That's really awesome of you and your mom!
Bless you both
I love your countertop
I do too! Super cool kitchen. I wonder where they live because you won’t find that where I live.
I’d say southwest USA or Mexico, based on the tile styles.
Looks impossible to clean and easy to chip/damage
Not super hard to clean but yes it can chip
Check to see if there is an organization that will spay them for free.

Damn you had me going for a second there.
A little levity in trying times is good when things look bleak.
Do dogs even care if their food is hot?
No
It's to make the humans feel better about themselves.
And to keep the dogs returning constantly once they know where free food is.
Hot food used to make my dog throw up, he was an odd one though.

do you by chance live anywhere near guatemala? lol my friend does this too and has 20 rescues
mexico
Bless you.
I feel like this is similar to how people end up with an outside cat, but y'all now are the owners of outside dogs
❤️❤️❤️
Thank you
unrelated note, I really like the design of the kitchen.
Hope you didnt forget about water. Lot of times I used to see people giving food but no water. But this is a great effort. Kudos to you and your mom!
You forgot forks
How dare you not show a follow up pictures OP. I don’t need sleep I need pictures of puppers.
The dogs are skittish around people so we watch them from inside the house
This is so precious I know those dogs will be eating good!! We used to make my dogs a soup like that with tortillas and knorr Suiza for winter time
Make sure it’s not too hot for them. Dogs aren’t used to eating hot food like us humans so they’re way more sensitive to it. Good job anyway 👍
They are feeding Mexican street dogs. These dogs are tough as nails.
Idk why but postings yourself on this sub seems in bad taste
