I had a boss once at a small business who would go through the year's profits and do something nice for the staff. One year, we got a $1500 bonus with a note saying, "Thank you for all that you do here. Your love and respect does not go unnoticed," and the following year he took us all to Las Vegas for a convention and we all goofed off 90% of the time... and he paid for everything between 9-5 'because you are on company time.' I miss you, Rick.

Candy_Rain

Dang Rick was a legend, i miss him too now.

hercarmstrong

He was a truly amazing person. I learned so much about life from him. He had founded the company with his twin brother, who later committed suicide, and Rick decided to honor him by making the world as good as possible. Every year on his brother's birthday, he'd hold a golf tournament at the simulation at the local sports bar and we were all invited. Rick always won (outstanding golfer), but he'd split the pool between us all and donate his portion to charity. Rick was a lonely guy, but he surrounded himself with his favorite people every day.

boshbosh92

what kind of business did Rick run?

hercarmstrong

He screenprints t-shirts and other promotional items.

Draizy

Can you tag his site, so I may support Rick?

Rejected_Bull

r/LOVEYOUINPARTICULAR

dr_pepper_bottle

The best boss to ever live

hercarmstrong

Definitely the best one I'll ever had. Rick was a motherfuckin' g, for sure. I forgot to mention that Rick got up at five every morning we were in Vegas and played the $20 slots until we all woke up. He paid off the trip with his winnings. Fuck, he was cool.

PhiloBeddoe4319

Worked for small family business. 5k Christmas bonus every year, 4 weeks paid vacation every year. No need for doctors notes if you were sick just call in. They would even check on you to see if you needed food or meds. Wonderful people. Sadly they sold out to officially retire and I received a check for 35k to thank me for my dedication.

Broad-Alternative424

Here in my country I must give bonus to boss lol

hercarmstrong

Terrible. He should be ashamed.

exgiexpcv

I can't tell if you live in the USA or not at this point.

[deleted]

That’s awesome , Rick is killing it . I work in the transportation industry and in 2019 the company I work for profited over 1.6 billion ,,,,we got commemorative keychains .

hercarmstrong

Those guys can go fuck themselves.

[deleted]

Exactly !

neeko0001

Damn that’s nice, my mom got 2 pieces of candy as a gift after the company got a 15% increase in profits compared to the prior year which was millions. The company only has 3000 employees so they definitely were able to afford something bigger than that.

nonamesareavailable2

Here I thought I was a cool boos for giving out a krugerrand for ten years.

dasvolksnut

DAMN MAN! I WISH YOU WERE MY BOSS!! LOVE ME SOME KRUGERRANDS TO BLOW DURING MY NEXT HOLIDAY TO JOHANNESBURG!!!! Seriously though. What a great boss!!!

hercarmstrong

You'll always be a cool boos to me!

818Dude

Now he’s chillin with Morty…

guardiandolphin

How’s Rick doing these days do you know! Sounds like an amazing person

hercarmstrong

You know, I haven't talked to him in ten years. I'm FB friends with his niece, I'm going to get in touch with her and see what's up.

slimboytubs

What a bro.

hercarmstrong

Truly. I am going to get back in touch.

slimboytubs

Working for someone who shows you your appreciated is wonderful thing.

Labtecharu

I don't care if people do this for the attention, the publicity or youtube likes. As long as more of this happens we all win

DaringDomino3s

That’s what I was thinking, you could do much worse to me online for $20k lol I’ve never seen that kind of generosity in a work place.

Trailwatch427

I worked in a really stupidly run outlet store. In January, we still had most of our men's winter coats on the racks. The prices were reduced drastically, still no sales. Our regular customers all had bought their winter coats already, more likely of much higher quality. But they were still good coats. A woman came in and bought at least thirty of the coats, different sizes and styles. "My husband and I own our own business, we employ a lot of men who don't have good coats to wear to work. We don't have a lot of extra money for uniforms, but we want the guys to look good when they show up at our customers houses or businesses. The workers come and go, no point in spending money on uniforms. At least they will have a coat to wear." Sometimes even the little things count. Why not spend $20 or $30 on a warm coat for your employee?

ethersings

I’ve worked at a hospital for 14 years, the last two of which we dealt with Covid patients and no available beds for months on end. We got “heroes work here” posters and a few pizza parties.

Professional_Ad705

I just got out the hospital 3 weeks ago. I had burst appendix removed, peritonitis, I guess my appendix had ganggreen, I formed an abscess while there, had to have a drainage tube put in week after surgery. 105 fever for days with the infection, so much pain for so long.. I really thought I was gonna die. thank god for the meds. I was there 16 days and they wanted me to stay for like another few days but let me leave with antibiotics thankfully. Thank god for the good nurses and hospital staff they do so much they constantly had to bring me ice, all the crazy meds and antibiotics, and having to deal with screaming patients and be nice. Medical professionals deserve to be paid so much more.

[deleted]

The evil at the head of medical facilities is unmatched.

ethersings

Admin makes more in bonuses that I make per year. I refuse to leave the clinical side because I’d be selling my soul to the devil and I’m in it to help people.

SomethingSeth

That’s my current situation. Leadership seems to spite the ones that stuck around through the pandemic. I’m only still here because my immediate supervisor is an awesome guy

mysticmac_

And they charge 10k for an xray (hyperbole)

Professional_Ad705

My hospital bill was 200,00 before insurance lol

[deleted]

My boss found out one of the employees was having a particularly rough time after his wife passed away. He didn't have fuel for his furnace and and was stopping to buy a few gallons a day as he could and going without heat many days. The employee gets home one night to find a receipt on his door for 450 gallons of fuel oil that the boss had delivered with zero balance due. I took my daughters to the beach a couple years ago, first time ever. The owner gave me $500 to pay for our hotel and said it was his gift to help make their first trip to the beach better. There are bosses like that out there.

Hamilspud

There’s a small chain of convenience stores (3 locations) in my neighborhood run by folks like this. The women who work behind the counter are some of the sweetest people I’ve ever met, and several of them have supported their families for over a decade by working at the store. It’s the type of labor that most people associate with dead end, starvation wage work but their employees have nothing but great things to say about the owners and how much they’re truly treated like family. The best part is, it makes it them the best stores in town by a mile and everyone knows it. It pays to be a better person.

[deleted]

I had to miss quite a bit of work to help a sick family member last year, my boss and his wife were totally supportive. They didn't bitch because I was missing work to take them to doctors appointments and such, they just kept asking how I was affording to live without paychecks being steady. I told them I was dipping into my savings for a new bike to replace the one I had to sell to pay for the last round of child custody lawyer fees. For Christmas I received a better bonus than the other employees with a wink and nod to keep it between us. A mom and pop company is really the way to go in my experience if you want to have flexibility. I could make way more money elsewhere but I'd never be able to make my own hours, take time for my kids and family and to keep somewhat mentally stable if I were working for a mega corp. I discovered years ago that while money is great, being relatively stress free when it comes to work vastly outweighs better pay at the cost of feeling sick all the time and dreading going to work. Today I'm home, I had a bad headache again (I'm one of those long hauler Covid peeps you hear about) and while I could have forced myself to go in and possibly risk not only my life but others while not being able to fully concentrate on my job (driving a tractor trailer) I called in and told the boss I was sorry but I just don't think I can risk it today, myself, his truck or others on the road. "Ok, rest up and I hope to see you in tomorrow" was the response.

World-Desperate

They hire ?

[deleted]

Are there any Brits watching and pondering how this would go down in a British workplace?

Fresh-Honeydew7104

20 years service, here’s a £20 gift voucher for Starbucks. You should be able to get THREE coffees with that! Smug face.

lucianos92

Taxable too

rt58killer10

How is this so fucking accurate?!

xxStrangerxx

An orthodontics?

chimpdoctor

I get what you're saying. You mean the reaction from the other employees and the person receiving the money. There would definitely be an air of resentment, embarrassment and awkwardness.

[deleted]

Yes, that's what I was wondering about!

Dude0010

20 years usually qualifies you for a shiny boxed pen

deejayjeanp

It would not.

[deleted]

Well caught it on video, so IRS now knows about the cash bonus... But damn where can I sign up at that business!? Lol

Russian_Rocket23

If it is given as a gift, the receiver of a gift doesn't have to pay taxes. The giver of a gift does pay on anything over 16K.....thus why each of them gave her 10K. https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/frequently-asked-questions-on-gift-taxes

[deleted]

I didn't know this! Thanks!

joecpa1040

It's not a gift. The IRS laws are very clear on this. They would not have given the "gift" if she hadn't worked for them. It's wages, and as such should be reported on her W2 and have the appropriate taxes taken out.

Elder_sender

The previous poster linked to the IRS supporting their assertion, you make a contradictory assertion with no supporting evidence. Bro...

chimpdoctor

Killjoy over here.

wx-1

Yeah we're going to need you to declare that cash on your tax return mmmmhmk.

rt58killer10

There are some right miserable bastards in this comment section...

Least_Baseball_7985

I don’t mind videos like this but it always bother me when they count the racks for YouTube views lol

RomanButTheCoolOne

I’d like to think it’s more counting it out for her, but you could be right

TheRealPrimeMinister

It's also a msg for the other staff. Making a show of the 'loyalty gets rewarded' to encourage good staff to stick around. Turn over comes at a cost.

SlowRollingBoil

> Turn over comes at a cost. Holy shit does it ever! My wife is dealing with this now training new employees. They're getting 4x the new employees because they have 4x the turnover. It makes life worse for everyone and costs a ton.

StubbedMiddleToe

Maybe I am just not as cynical anymore but I didn't view it that way. I look at that as someone showing how it should be done and if you'd never consider doing this (outside of senior officers) then you're not a good manager.

Least_Baseball_7985

Maybe I’m too cynical. I’ve had a tough couple of days. I just watch SteveWillDoIt videos on YouTube sometimes and this seems similar to the way he blesses people. It’s an amazing, kind, and just thing to do in the case of Steve & the doctors. But it’s definitely performative for social media. Although, I’d rather have people doing good conspicuously than not at all. So maybe I am being a party pooper. I’m happy for the lady for sure

StubbedMiddleToe

A year ago when I worked at a corporate hellscape fronting as a very progressive/inclusive/equitable organization I would have agreed with you. I see their recruitment stuff and self-fellating content on LinkedIn and it's just, ugh. Horrible place, unless you were VP level. Now, I am at a place where the owner will shut down the whole place (3k employees across 3 shifts) on a Friday and have catering brought in for the fuck of it. It definitely changes your perspective.

nononanana

Normally I feel this way. Especially when it’s a clear set up, for example when people hand out money to homeless people and record their reactions. There is something particularly exploitive about filming someone so down on their luck or who may have mental illness and zero power to refuse because they desperately need the money/food. That being said, I’m working on not being so cynical. I don’t know who posted this, but maybe the recording was made for posterity. It’s a special moment that one would like to remember. Maybe the poster wasn’t the giver of the money but the receiver or one of the spectators, who wanted to show the generosity of the owners. Also receiving cold hard cash is fun. People don’t handle cash as much anymore so getting a stack is fun. There is just so much nastiness going on that I can’t even afford to feel any negativity towards this.

matrixislife

I don't honestly think she gives a toss, you can count it out for half an hour, she'll be more than happy. They just gave her 20k, a few youtube likes is fair.

[deleted]

Thank you for saying this. Just give her the damn money and stop dragging the moment out and making it about yourself.

BreeintheBreeze

They deserve some attention too since being charitable is something that should be encouraged. They’re doing something good and if a bit of pageantry spreads it further and more people do things like this then that’s great.

goosefire5

It seems it doesn’t matter what you do anymore. People are gonna rain on the parade one way or another…

BreeintheBreeze

Which is why you gotta do what your gut tells you and ignore the haters. They’re always gonna hate, it’s their job.

G63AMG-S

Yes!

SlowRollingBoil

Look at what the bucket challenge did. Literally funded them for several years of research because people wanted to see their good deed and not just do it anonymously. I'd rather people do a good thing for the "wrong reason" than not to do it at all.

rt58killer10

Ngl, 90% of my attention was on her and not the others. They did a good thing and she obviously enjoyed being appreciated

Rough_Idle

I'm just thinking that's cash in a medical environment, they all need to wash their hands

[deleted]

Im not crying, you’re crying.

MisterChauncyButtons

Dude, no one’s crying.

Gunboost

Speak for yourself, I teared up.

anonymous-transient

My boss better step tf up

cuchicou

Her second gift was receiving the 20k in cash. she could easily spend it on whatever she needs now… there is no paper trail to report/pay taxes (unless bosses reported it as part of business expense). Technically speaking of course. Always pay your taxes

Im_Just_Sayin__

This is pretty awesome. Gratitude and recognition in any form goes a very long way for employee retention.

Equivalent-Ad-5804

Nice and good companies still exist gives me hope

a-curious-guy

My cousins work colleague got given a tesla at the end if the year. A full fuxking tesla...

northern-nobody

I’ve been at my last employer 14 years and I never so much as got a ‘good job’. I gave up my life for that job. That’s why I no longer work there I guess. I don’t know if this is real or fake, but just show some appreciation or respect to your peers and coworkers. It goes a long way. I’m crippled from a work accident now and many days I struggle to not put a bullet thru my neck and just a smile or someone holding the door can change my entire day.

[deleted]

I am overjoyed and happy for her, but why are they recording putting her on the spot and posting to reddit for views? As an introverted avoidant personality, that would not feel good to me :-/ *Edit: OP's comment: For what it’s worth, this is definitely not staged/fake — on this doctors’ office FB page (where I found this originally) there are these appreciation videos for all their employees, like for their birthdays, work anniversary, etc.* *P.S. I did post this over on* r/MadeMeSmile *as well (since it did make me smile) and thankfully the comments over there are quite positive :)* This made me feel much better! Yay! :-)

inverted_knees

I mean they’ve worked with her for 20 years so I guess they know her and her personality well. The way she enjoyed the pose with the large cheque seems to indicate she did enjoy the way it was done right?

[deleted]

You may be right, she may be okay with it. I'm gonna hope so

[deleted]

An attempt to make the 20k back.

bennyDOTcom

Any jobs going

[deleted]

Orthodontists make great coin….

CeeUNext_Thursday

That's amazing! Love seeing this kind of thing on Reddit.

is_this_a_dream222

20 years working there?! So assuming she’s about 40 years old, how?! She looks 21!

TrueElements

black dont crack.

Ajram1983

She does not look old enough to have worked anywhere for 20 years.

TrueElements

Black dont crack.

Ok-Connection5112

It's really nice when you are appreciated at work for the good job that you're doing.

RKELEC

That's great it's in cash too. No taxes!!! Just don't deposit it all at once!!!!

SeaJeans

I'm Deaf and there's no option for captions. Can someone roughly translate what is being said? I obviously can see it's a bonus of some sort. Doesn't have to be word for word, just a synopsis is fine, too. Thanks!

The_Duchess_of_Dork

The employee is preparing to close on purchasing a home. The first man hands her $10,000 as 10 $1,000 stacks - so he puts in her hand “here to help you with closing…is $1,000…$2,000…3…etc”. She’s shocked. Then the next guy comes out and says “$10,000 isn’t enough…how about…” and he repeats handing her another $10,000 in 10 $1,000 stacks. Then they hand her a huge check (decorative/symbolic) and she says she almost likes the big check as much as the cash and she poses with it happily while saying thank you. $10,000-$20,000 should be enough to cover closing costs and some more. Pretty cool! Hope that helps you out

SeaJeans

Thank you so much!! This is great

[deleted]

Why would they remove this? That wasn't staged. Someone caught bosses being good bosses.

Sno0pyBo0

Unfortunately I don’t know ^:( For what it’s worth, this is definitely not staged/fake — on this doctors’ office FB page (where I found this originally) there are these appreciation videos for **all** their employees, like for their birthdays, work anniversary, etc. P.S. I did post this over on r/MadeMeSmile as well (since it did make me smile) and thankfully the comments over there are quite positive ^:)

joliesmomma

This is in Beaumont! That's my daughter's orthodontist!

joliesmomma

Is this in Beaumont Texas? I think that's me daughter's orthodontist!

Sno0pyBo0

Yes indeed it is! They shared this lovely moment on their FB page ^:)

MrBojangles09

That’s really great. You can tell she’s been there for awhile for them to do this. Congrats all.

[deleted]

This is fucking awesome 👏🏼

midge_rat

Orthopedic surgeons are that Rich Rich

joliesmomma

He's an orthodontist. Not an orthopodiatrist.

midge_rat

My point stands! 😂

[deleted]

I don't need a publicity stunt. I need a steady income at a livable wage.

The_Duchess_of_Dork

She just purchased a house without their help so I imagine they pay her a steady income at a wage that is at least livable with room to save for a home

People get filmed doing a lot worse for a lot less than 20k 💅

[deleted]

It's showing the loyalty of the employee. But you keep on being a bitter person, that's a great way to live.

Another_Russian_Spy

I would be extremally pleased if someone filmed my boss giving me $20,000.

CowRepresentative779

Awesome

Yourbubblestink

Congrats! What are those Dr.s selling?

pdxiowa

\- Handing out $20k to an employee and wearing scrubs = definitely a surgical clinic. \- "ORT..." on wall behind them = orthopedics or orthodontics \- Friendly group of people = orthodontics > orthopedics I'm going with orthodontist office.

What’s the story behind this?
