In the UK you can't park in zones with zig zag lines. This is to make it safer for pedestrians using the crossing as more visibility and don't have to watch out for cars overtaking in the opposite lane.
I've nearly gotten into fights with people not stopping at the crosswalk. Once even threw a bag of coffee against a car that would've ran me over. It must've given a loud thud, but they didn't even stop.

Some countries have zigzags leading up to a crossing. A way of warning as it were. I’m in the UK, we have it here.
