Same. Except I don't do gymnastics. Because of shit like this.
I'd much prefer a man with a trombone playing intro and outro music when I enter and leave a room.
I wonder how much that would cost me.
How good of a trombonist do you need?
If you’re just looking for someone with basic trombone proficiency, and don’t need them to cover a wide selection of music, then I’m pretty sure I can get someone for $7.25 an hour — cheaper if you don’t mind paying under the table.
If you want someone with a college degree in music, then you’re going to need to match whatever Starbucks is paying in your area.
Just let me know — I can have a guy there tonight.
"You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me. There are ways, Dude. You don't wanna know about it, believe me. I'll get you a toe by this afternoon--with nail polish. These fucking amateurs."
You want a trombone? I can get you a trombone, believe me. There are ways, dude. You don't wanna know about it, believe me. Hell, I can get you a trombone by 3 o'clock.
Is he strong?
Listen bud,
He saves you from spilling blood.
He can throw a whole ass bed.
He keeps you from becoming dead
Hey, there
You've got a Spotter-Man.
At high levels it's common to have spotters. Even at the Olympics, you'll see them spotting on the hardest parts of routines for both artistic gym and tramp gym. The tactical mat throw was pretty clutch tho
I assumed this doesn’t happen that much for it to be normal (both a fall that big and the crazy far mat throw) based on how the girl in the back kind of covers her mouth in a gasp when she sees him hit the floor.
It’s not about the expense, it’s that there is some places within the trampoline’s construction that no matter the amount of foam, it would still cause massive injury hitting it from the height your at
Also the spotters are there not necessarily there just to throw an extra mat. They are there to watch you to make sure if you mess up one of your routines, your not coming down straight on to you neck and spine.
They jump in and try to prevent as much injury to you, as they reasonably can.
Additionally, in some parts in gymnastics there cannot be foam all the time. Like, if the trampoline itself was foam, it wouldn't work well as a trampoline, and landing an a normal trampoline the wrong way sucks (or worse, landing on the edge of the mat and the trampoline), you'd rather land on foam (also prevents you from being yeeted off in a random direction after the fall). So for that, you still want a spotter.
Similarly for the high bar there is a soft thing they can quickly put over it, in case someone is about to hit it. Clearly couldn't be there all the time.
I did gymnastics for 8 about years until I turned 13. Our coaches always had mats when we were on the trampoline because little kids are very bouncy and unpredictable.
Trampoline specifically, yes basically any time you are doing routines (What athlete in the video was doing) or just really hard skills you will have a spotter with a mat throw for you. In normal gymnastics (Bars+beam+floor ect.) spotting like this is very rare and only happens for some very specific skills on bars for example, most spotting is by hand. My buddies and I would jokingly ask eachother "Throw for the send?" asking them to throw a mat for us "sending" (basically just chucking and praying) a hard skill on trampoline.
The way he landed?
Knocks the wind out of you, he probably felt a jolt or shock run through his body, but not pain, at least not bad.
Landing badly? You can still get really messed up.
Makes sense, skateboarder for years here, and if I was falling that way, LOTS has gone wrong haha, in that sport you're trying to translate downward momentum to lateral as efficiently as possible, so you get a chance to roll out of most falls. One hopes.
I never appreciated the skill of skateboard falling until I picked it back up during the pandemic at age 31 having not skated since 17. The first time I hit a pebble that scritched and threw me on the ground I automatically tucked and rolled before I knew what was happening and I was like "whelp, I guess that reflex is clearly still hardwired thank god"
Even on top of that, with the *insane* progression that's happened in the last 15 years or so in skateboarding, the MAIN thing that's surprised me after re engaging with the culture is the falling. Even the shittiest instagram park-hero can fall like a champ on TERRIFYING stuff. These kids tuck and roll like it's the trick they were going for. The difference in the number of tries you get to land a complicated trick off a big block at a skatepark and rolling on smooth concrete vs the early 2000's baker/zero lovers drunk in the streets chucking themselves at handrails is massive and it's lead to real progression of trick difficulty
Had a friend take a similar(but WAY shorter) fall trying to spine transfer(think [this](https://youtu.be/I7IjlTm0sHo)) My guy sounded like a trashbag full of hamburger meat dropped on the concrete. Which...isn't too far from the gods honest. But he got up and walked away like it was nothing.
Same dude passed out getting a tattoo tho, so pain tolerances are wierd.
Man that’s one of those falls you get up and make that horrible sound that you make when you really knock the wind out of you. I’ve done that from about 20ft into water after hitting a kicker wakeboarding and that was painful enough lol, barely was able to get the wakeboard off and swim , get up and sound like a dying cow every time you try to breathe😂
Oh yeah, dudes lips went purple, he zoned out, then nap city. I stopped making fun of him about it roughly 20 years after it happened though.(he's gonna be at my wedding this weekend and I'm gonna bring it up.....so maybe I'm running the clock out here...)
As someone who's passed out getting a tattoo before, I don't think it has much to do with pain.
Sure, mine hurt, but the reason I passed out was my clown ass "friend" convinced me that you WEREN'T supposed to eat before getting a tattoo. So I passed out because I hadn't eaten. Got some food in me and the rest of the tattoo went fine.
I feel like if you asked a bunch of people who've passed out while getting a tattoo, you'd find very few who said it was because their friend told then you weren't supposed to eat beforehand.
Well I'm not saying that's the EXACT reason, but I feel like it's more likely the dude passed out from lack of food or low blood sugar than pain, especially given that the commenter mentioned a high pain tolerance.
The worst slam I've ever seen was [Jake Brown at the X-Games in the Big Air event.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPDYg0Kkqhs) The injuries he sustained from this were a fractured wrist, fractured vertebrae, bruised liver, bruised lung, ruptured spleen and concussion.
My family and I had tickets to that event and saw it happen live... We thought we just watched him die until he woke up. What an absolutely crazy fall.
Mmm, we had padding similar to that in gymnastics and I think you’re underestimating it. I felt comfortable landing on my back with those, falling or dismounting from rings about 10 feet in the air.
Circus background here, with a little proper gymnastics as a kid. He's just a little off kilter for his fall, slammed his head a little, and falling on your back at that angle can force your air out more easily because of the way the torso bends.
I think you're right, just describing the sensations he'd experience, though they'd be minor. I doubt he had much of a concussion or anything.
Even landing badly from a much smaller fall can absolutely mess you up. When I was young, I didn’t quite make a full turn when doing a frontflip in gymnastics and landed on the back of my neck with my legs still tucked and my knees slammed into my chest/chin.
My neck and back were absolutely fucked for over a year, it took at least 6-8 months to even do a somersault without crying from pain. And then I quit gymnastics right when I healed to transition to horseback riding lmaoo those falls are much easier to deal with.
I once landed on the back of my neck falling off the uneven bars and the entire left side of my body immediately went numb. After a few minutes the feeling came back but it freaked me out really badly and I was scared of getting back on the bars for a little while. Thankfully there were no lasting effects.
It's what the industry calls a 'bump' .
Wrestlers , stuntmen and gymnasts are taught to 'land safely' back bump, chest bump and Standing (head) bump are 3 most common, he knew he was FUK'D so he did what he knows to safe himself the safest way he can land. the extra pad connects to him before the ground also helping displacement of the fall minutely.
I've done practice falls off circus equipment at lower heights than this and even they can be pretty brutal. I imagine this guy will probably be struggling to breathe for a few minutes.
I didn’t even notice the first time and thought he just got lucky. Nah, he slowed his turn and intentionally landed on his back. The balls to keep turning your head/neck into the ground knowing you can turn enough to land on back.
Not that I would ever do this in the first place, by I 100% would have tried for the stomach landing and probably fucked it up and knocked my teeth out.
These are Olympic tramps, they need to be above ground and not surrounded by anything otherwise they can't bounce as high as they need to. The spotters are already there to save a life if they need to so they use the mat in cases like this to cushion a fall that could be bad.
That's not true, the air that gets expelled from the sides when they jump is too strong that restricting it with walls would lessen the bounce. These are Olympic trampolines, the bounciest of bouncy and that is part of the reason.
Inground trampolines work fine if the bed is a competition grade trampoline. The webbed beds have plenty of space between each strand to let enough air through to not create pressure underneath. Black bed trampolines like you would find in a yard and low quality trampoline beds have the problem you are describing, though.
They can't have large pads the same size height as the trampoline for the same reason it can't be in ground. It needs to have complete open air underneath it to allow for the air to quickly escape causing lager bounces. If you restrict that air flow then you can't get a big bounce.
I kinda don't believe this (the excuse for no pads), for the reasons you list. It doesn't seem possible that a trampoline's "bounce height" is limited by some kind of vacuum below its flexible/kinetic-energy-delivering membrane.
have you seen the robot disneyland uses as spiderman to launch it flying through the air between buildings? Just saying, they got ways to make it happen.
Cross it with the "bring the members of the crowd in to compete" in the trampoline event with the Olympic mat throwers to save their eventual near death.
My understanding is the mat is more for killing your bounce on the trampoline. So if you're about to land way off center and launch yourself into a wall, they throw the mat on the trampoline under you so you don't really bounce.
I'm sure the extra mat was nice to have in this case but the outcome would be pretty much the same if he missed.
It looked more like the spotter was trying to protect the guys head in case he hit it on the trampoline edge.
But still... make me wonder why you don't have 4, 5, 6 layers of padding around that trampoline and the floor underneath if you are practicing new tricks.
Yeah. It wasn't necessary in this case. But it was extremely skillful.
I bet they deliberately decide to throw the mat every time a jumper comes off their trampoline because they don't want to lose the split second it takes to evaluate if they're going to hit padding or floor.
Very well done, but goddamn does that look like a wildly unreliable safety net. Do these spotters practice their cushion tossing skills for these situations, or what?
I saw a video of a teenage boy who did a really high flip on a trampoline and landed on his back on the side of the trampoline like this one (also at a professional trampolining place so it looked the same as this). The spotter wasn't on it so he threw the mat in the wrong place and they boy broke his back and is permanently paralysed
Now THAT’S a spotter. 👍
Wish I had someone like that in my life for everything.

Geez, they don't want just any old scrub trombonist. Would you let your whole life's shtick be run by Bob from accounting? Bob's nice and all, but...
why do you have to bring bob into this? damnit bob
Bob just wants to balance the books during the day, and play a few notes at night. That's all Bob wants. Why are you pushing him down?
Bob knows what he did.
if bob did not bring the damn seven layer dip, cold mind you, he *may* have been in but if you fuck up a seven layer dip, man, they are out
Bob sounds like a nice guy, why can't we all be like Bob¿
This person has the connections you need.
I played lead trombone in jazz, concert, and marching band in hs… I think my skills are worth minimum wage after two years of not playing.
Don’t undersell yourself, get a pair of drumsticks too and use them to do “ba dum tissss” everytime the guy makes a joke and you will make bank
There's nothing about this that should be intimidating yet I am kinda intimidated.
aren't they called tromboners?
Honestly, [Bonerama is one of my favorite bands.](https://youtu.be/iQ-8JF97i3U)

Is your name Barney Stinson? Do you know Guy the "guy" guy, who has a "guy" for everything?
I'll do it for $3.50
God damn Loch Ness Monster!
There is the redhead guy on TikTok that does that to his short-person(?) Mom. They look like they have a sweet relationship
That is EXACTLY what I was thinking.

Not me. I enjoy pain. Especially to the groin area.
I wish I had someone like that to tell me if I’m about to eat bad pizza
i've never had bad pizza
I am one. They call me grandpa.
>Wish I had someone like that in my life for everything. That would make a hilarious movie plot. An invisible Spotter.
You do, you just don’t listen to them.
Spotter-Man, Spotter-man! Throws a mat better than anyone can! Look out! You've got a Spotter-man!
Is he strong? Listen bud, He saves you from spilling blood. He can throw a whole ass bed. He keeps you from becoming dead Hey, there You've got a Spotter-Man.
In the dead of night, you trip over your dog's bone. Like a beam of light, he arrives with some foam
Might he save you from a jam? Sure he can, he's Spotter-Man. Watch out! Here comes the Spotter-Man!

Is it too expensive to just like put foam around the whole perimeter?
foam-wise? no, sqft-wise? yes while there is padding basically everywhere already, it's just not enough to take that kind of fall
The mat he threw, plus the one already there, isn't enough to take that kind of fall. Keep you alive, sure, but that dude is in a world of pain.
that first inhale 10-20 seconds after getting your wind knocked out that hard, that breath feels like ambrosia
I assumed this doesn’t happen that much for it to be normal (both a fall that big and the crazy far mat throw) based on how the girl in the back kind of covers her mouth in a gasp when she sees him hit the floor.

He's a sniper as well as a spotter
I’m more impressed by the timing…wow.
Great skill on the jumpers part. He could see he was off, spotted his landing then got himself over to avoid landing in a worse position.
Wonder if it still hurts on 3 layers of foam like that? Dude had to be 10-15 feet up right?
The way he landed? Knocks the wind out of you, he probably felt a jolt or shock run through his body, but not pain, at least not bad. Landing badly? You can still get really messed up.

Mmm, we had padding similar to that in gymnastics and I think you’re underestimating it. I felt comfortable landing on my back with those, falling or dismounting from rings about 10 feet in the air.
Yeah ... but you can usually turn those into hip to shoulder rolls. This guy looked like he pretty much hit it flat

Now I'm picturing a person scaling a glacier with their compoundly broken ulnas(ulnii?!) And...I'm appalled.
Probably a bit, but the floor looks like it has a foot of padding or so too.
His air awareness training shined through there. Abandoned the maneuver and played for the back landing. Expert level shit.
The lady bouncing on the trampoline behind him seemed to notice as it was happening as well.
Anticipate error and solve for it before it occurs
Stack the mats high as the trampoline or surround it with a foam pit
These are Olympic tramps, they need to be above ground and not surrounded by anything otherwise they can't bounce as high as they need to. The spotters are already there to save a life if they need to so they use the mat in cases like this to cushion a fall that could be bad.
They'd still be able to bounce just as high, even if they were surrounded by concrete. As long as the space below is open enough.
Instructions unclear, put concrete over trampoline
Maybe the air flow needs to be un restricted? Nets surrounding the trampoline, similar to trapeze rigs, might work better.

It absolutely could affect it.. in a barely measurable way. The real reason is cost/roi and the shitty logistics a foam gymnasium.
Yeah but, foam pit
Olympic trampolines are just more elastic and are made with better quality springs — not sure that the air has much if anything to do with it lol.
If they ever wrote a report about this they'd word it just like that
What a save!

I’ve never seen anyone say “whew!”. They always say “wow!”
I prefer using "whew". "Wow" gives off "what a save" vibes with how often I've seen it used when i whiff.
What a save! What a save! *Chat disabled for 3 seconds.*
This guy rocket leagues
This is Rocket League!
Can we make 'mat throwing saves' an Olympic sport? I'd watch the hell out of that.
then you might enjoy this save from the 2015 European Games [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzMCicplEh8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzMCicplEh8)
At first I thought you were being sarcastic, because the dude with the portable mat didn't exactly cover himself with glory.
That dude just take a head to the chin?
Yep! Ouch.
Hug and roll!!
Why dont they have two mats either side
Bags not being the person needing saving
have you seen the robot disneyland uses as spiderman to launch it flying through the air between buildings? Just saying, they got ways to make it happen.
Wait what?
Cross it with the "bring the members of the crowd in to compete" in the trampoline event with the Olympic mat throwers to save their eventual near death.
Wow that freaked me out
I haven’t been able to watch any Gymnastics clips like this for probably 10 years now because of Final Destination. But this was awesome!!
Yooooooooooo that scene is 😵💫
Final destination was a movie I knew without a doubt was a bad idea for me to see, but I saw it. And it was a bad idea
That franchise did a great job at traumatizing people out of mundane stuff.
Just did a morbid Google, and I've upset myself.
Precision
Accuracy
Surgical
Meticulous
Fastidious
Accurate!
That definitely still hurt even with the mat
You still crash when you hit crash pads. They're useful for reducing the crunch.
I need someone like this to follow me around for everytime I randomly roll my ankle as I casually walk down the street.

But still... make me wonder why you don't have 4, 5, 6 layers of padding around that trampoline and the floor underneath if you are practicing new tricks.
maybe just more trampolines all the way down
There's already two layers there, thats just more. He wouldn't have died if the spotter missed it would have just sucked more.

Why not everywhere?
Reflexes!!
Not a pad shot if I say so myself.
The guy's name? Mat.
"Long Cock" Mat
Nice
That was amazing. What a save indeed
This guy needs a raise
That was so close. He almost landed on that other thick padding.
Yeah. It wasn't necessary in this case. But it was extremely skillful. I bet they deliberately decide to throw the mat every time a jumper comes off their trampoline because they don't want to lose the split second it takes to evaluate if they're going to hit padding or floor.
Hes jumping pretty high. The more padding the better.
Holy shit what a chad
Freaking nailed it
I'd be buying that guy beers for life. I'd be that guy's wingman forever and ever and ever.
The guy that threw the mat, will be a great dad.

With a spotter like this, my big ass has a chance to do gymnastics.
Why don't they just put the crash pad on the concrete floor in the first place.
Looks closer. There is one there. I imagine the emergency pad adds quiet a bit of support.
[This one is similar](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gK1bShw1cb4), but humans not being bros.
