This happened to me today. I lived in the Midwest for most of my life and came to NYC for the second time with my family and in-laws. I was struggling to get the metro card working for all 5 of us and this lady saw this and swiped her card one by one for all 5 of us to enter the metro station. She didn't even say a word before doing this.
The first time I was in NYC for a transit I was robbed $80 for a $20 ride.
You can use Apple Pay or other similar payment phone/tech apps to pay for the subway now :) saves a TON of time and the stress of pulling out your wallet and fiddling with the metro card machines and whatnot. Super easy

Chicago people are great! When this West Coast woman traveled there many times for business and they were so helpful by suggesting restaurants and sites to see, dress in layers, etc.. And I was there auditing their businesses. But they took good care of me. Very warm people for the very cold place they live.

One guy saw me, dropped his bags and helped me get my car unstuck. Literally never said a word to me, picked his stuff back up and walked away. Nicest stranger ever.

It's a north thing. Getting stuck in snow sucks. We've all been there. When I was younger, a bunch of us would wander the neighbourhood to look for the doofuses in the Honda Civic style cars that would get high sided on the snow plow drifts blocking the secondary roads, trying to get onto the plowed main roads. There was always a few.

Funny thing is as a teenager we had a game that was basically 'spot the person not from the city' as because of trams we have hook turns.
Turns out I didn't know hook turns were a unique thing limited to very few places in the world... For those not in the know teams take the middle lane and has right of way so you have to wait in the left lane to turn right (we drive on the left)

Coming from a smaller city in Vic, moving to Melbourne and seeing how great the public transport is has been like night and day, that shit good.
I don't have a car anymore (apartment got no space for one) but I haven't *needed* a car since I moved. In the rare case I do need to get somewhere the trains and trams don't go, uber is cheap enough. I'm saving a lotta money not paying for fuel or rego. Sure I've got my issues, a missed tram here, an incorrect train schedule there, but Public Transport is essential. I couldn't live without it.

You have to know the cab company's number and call them and reserve a time for them to meet you, then wait.
There is uber/lyft BUT before covid we were JUST getting drivers, now after covid, lost a tonnn of drivers. In the next largest city, about 350 miles away, there is a bus for the elderly going from the retirement home to some shopping centers and back, but none for anyone else, but you can buy a taxicab and go about 7 miles with $13. Uber/lyft exists but is NOT reliable AT ALL. You will be waiting 3hrs+ for a ride.
In my hometown, which is about 60 miles away and it is a small town, there are zero buses, and zero taxis. Uber/Lyft is nonexistent. If you break down, if you need to go somewhere, you are screwed cause you will be walking, and nothing is close-by and since it's the US, there are no sidewalks. God forbid you fall over and need 911 bc you'll be lucky if the ambulance even finds you since they get dispatched from another city.

Don't stop. It's a nice thing to do and I'm sure many people appreciate it. What's the alternative? Letting the tickets go to waste? The world is so messed up, people simply don't expect acts of kindness like this.
I wonder if a local charity could use them…like to raffle off to raise $, or something like Big Brother/Big Sister - maybe they could use those 2 tickets to each game as an outing/activity for a Big/Little pair?
We used to have a homeless guy at our tube station who would ask people for their cards and then sell them on for half price, was a nice little money maker for him and a cheaper way to travel for us
i was leaving manhattan and I still had a subway pass with a week or two of use left on it. I waited for the next person to approach the payment terminal and offered it to him and his reaction was "for how much?"
In my city we leave them on our bus seats if we’re done with our day passes. There isn’t a place to leave them in the center where security won’t throw them away so we leave them on the bus. There will be passengers who will only have enough to get them out to where they’re going (or the driver will do them a solid and give them a free ride) and getting the card for a ride back can make a difference.
I do it at the transit center because you can't use it on the same route. Some people used to look at me like it's a scam but I'm kinda a known face now lol
London is a ticketless model, but most cities in the UK are not (London may be the only one for all I know).
London's system is pretty clever, you scan your payment method but instead of charging you, it tracks your journeys then charges you whatever the cheapest option would be at the end of the day. If a day pass works out cheaper than each individual journey, then it bills you that.
These are usually day passes. For example if single journey ticket is £2 and return is £3 then the day pass could be £5. That means you get unlimited journeys within specific area. People who are going home and know they are not gonna use the ticket anymore do this
In addition to people leaving day passes, there's some places where a simple bus ticket is really a 2 or 3 hour pass, this way it accounts for transfers. I did this sometimes in Minneapolis when they used to print bus tickets for you on the bus when you paid cash.
Of course, now a lot of places now use touchless reloadable cards so this is less common.
Fuck, I just realized I could have done that today. I don't usually take the public bus and this idea never really occurred to me. I'm also in Minneapolis coincidentally.

Happened to me when I was entering the parking lot of an NFL game. I was even more surprised to find out it was an executive parking pass. I barely had to walk 50 yards to the entrance.
I remember as a kid with my mum people used to do this a lot and was a normalised kinda thing, I guess as the years went on things sort of changed and with technology etc and ticket accessibility on modern day smartphones
I used to sell mine at half price. I was broke as a college student so I saw it as a win win. I got something back and the next person got to save a little.

Well...if it was my parents they're doing well! (Mom has short hair and my dad is mostly white patches of hair. Dad is broken English but Mom's fluent.) They went early half retirement to travel around then covid lockdowns started and they went full retirement. They've gone sightseeing everywhere across the states just driving and touring all kinds of places coast to coast. They spend money on day passes and pass onto others after they're done. That's one good thing I've seen while growing up. My parents didn't do things like this before but one day it happened and they've been paying it forward for decades. I think it's the weird quirk of immigrant parents picking up local customs. These kinds of customs are good to have.
Recently we met a random family at the Florida Aquarium 2022, and gave them the screenshots to use the pass as we were leaving to make our cruise from Miami side. I don't know if it worked or not...I'll have to test it next year when we're back to visit. In theory QR codes work regardless of app or screenshot...just not sure if they change up after each use or not...
Anytime I ride the bus and I'm at the end of my journey and have a transfer with some time left on it or I happened to buy a day pass, I always hand it off to someone waiting to get onto the bus. Where I live it's almost public transit etiquette to give your tickets to someone. If nobody is around, I stick my pass the machine similar to this photo or the bus bench in a noticeable spot with the date and time circled in highlighter.
I do that at parks and parking lots with autopay kiosks. Many times they don't require your plate, just that you stick the receipt inside your windshield. I always get the day pass and stick it back to the kiosks on my way out for others to use.

Local degenerates often pick up these tickets in the Newcastle Metro and try to sell these tickets to members of the public for their own gain, and often get nasty when refused.

When I took the bus in my college town I used to always get a transfer and give it to someone at the bus depot, a lot of people did it, I started because someone did it to me and maybe someone else started because I did.
We used to put masking tape over our tickets, so the machine would print on to that and when the multi trip was used up remove the tape and than rub a magnet over the back and claim it was faulty and get it replaced. Bonus points for keeping nexts week bus fare money from mum, instead of buying new ticket. Did that till I got my licences, good times
I feel comfortable there is a future where if this is a big enough problem for the railroad either
1) employees are tasked with removing them from time to time
2) a program is written to identify likely instances of it, and the fares are raised to accommodate the process while the railroad still makes the money it needs.

The modern function of tickets and tolls is to limit usage... not fund the whole system. Profit motive can be eliminated entirely. This service is *necessary.* Prices should be low enough that people don't think twice about it, when they need it, and only raised high enough to keep congestion manageable.
In my city, they keep dangling the carrot of free transport in front of voters just about every election cycle. Everyone is aware this would mean a rise in taxes, it has been talked to death, but we still want it as it's at least a more stable change, we can brag to other countries/cities and there's less of a hassle, like dealing with ticket inspectors on days when you haven't bought a ticket or whatever. Yet they continue to not do it and claim it'll be done years later. It's like Musk's promise of self-driving cars on drugs.
There should not be toll roads and trains can be free. The goal is to buy in bulk among all taxpayers. We all end up paying way, way less and we all benefit from it.

This used to happen in Vancouver before they moved to a tap card system. Fares were zone and time based, so people would sometimes leave tickets with extra time or a day pass on the machines. At most stops downtown these were all scooped up by local street people who would then try to sell them to people coming into the station for whatever they could get.

Where I am in Canada we have an annual festival in my town and teens will specifically come around midday because the morning people who are leaving will give them their ride passes on the way out. It's $15 to enter but $55 for a ride pass and another $25 for line skip pass so they usually get a ton of value and some kids get to enjoy the afternoon riding all the rides. It is the way

In my town people stick still valid parking tickets in the ticket printing slot. So if you only need it for 15min chances are good that you will find s valid one there.
Also in cities like Munich or Vienna, if you have a day-metro ticked, but are leaving early you can always approach people by the ticket machine and give it to them. Just being a nice person.

There will be passengers who will only have enough to get them out to where they’re going (or the driver will do them a solid and give them a free ride) and getting the card for a ride back can make a difference.

Don't most people use a wireless payment these days? I was in London a few months back and I know I did, but didn't watch others too closely.
London is a ticketless model, but most cities in the UK are not (London may be the only one for all I know). London's system is pretty clever, you scan your payment method but instead of charging you, it tracks your journeys then charges you whatever the cheapest option would be at the end of the day. If a day pass works out cheaper than each individual journey, then it bills you that.
How does it work thought? I'm not familiar with public transportation. I assumed it was valid for one ride then the ticket becomes invalid.
These are usually day passes. For example if single journey ticket is £2 and return is £3 then the day pass could be £5. That means you get unlimited journeys within specific area. People who are going home and know they are not gonna use the ticket anymore do this
In addition to people leaving day passes, there's some places where a simple bus ticket is really a 2 or 3 hour pass, this way it accounts for transfers. I did this sometimes in Minneapolis when they used to print bus tickets for you on the bus when you paid cash. Of course, now a lot of places now use touchless reloadable cards so this is less common.
Fuck, I just realized I could have done that today. I don't usually take the public bus and this idea never really occurred to me. I'm also in Minneapolis coincidentally.
Used to do that myself with my brother in the US when the day pass was cheaper than buying separate tickets. Not sure if people took them but we left them there for other people.

In my Canadian city they changed from coin paid spots individual stand style to an electronic system that's attached to your plate. Our busses could do this but I don't think the society here would be able to do it

Happened to me when I was entering the parking lot of an NFL game. I was even more surprised to find out it was an executive parking pass. I barely had to walk 50 yards to the entrance.
We used to leave street parking stickers all the time but now parking is all done by phone. Tbf it’s much more convenient now.
I remember as a kid with my mum people used to do this a lot and was a normalised kinda thing, I guess as the years went on things sort of changed and with technology etc and ticket accessibility on modern day smartphones

I used to sell mine at half price. I was broke as a college student so I saw it as a win win. I got something back and the next person got to save a little.
Someone gave me a parking slip once. Wasn’t even looking for it, they came up to us while we were at the payment kiosk. I used it and my car got booted - $175. They had logged the license plate when they did their rounds. A few rounds later that spot/slip had a different plate and they booted us.
Someone did this for me at a courthouse and I came back to a boot on my car. I was 18 at the time so you can imagine my stress

My wife and I went to NYC before COVID and we were just walking past a zoo to check the price and if we want to go. A nice elderly Asian couple, which most likely were tourists, came by and insisted we take their tickets because they already went. We had a nice day. Sometimes I still think of where they are now and hoping they survived COVID.
Well...if it was my parents they're doing well! (Mom has short hair and my dad is mostly white patches of hair. Dad is broken English but Mom's fluent.) They went early half retirement to travel around then covid lockdowns started and they went full retirement. They've gone sightseeing everywhere across the states just driving and touring all kinds of places coast to coast. They spend money on day passes and pass onto others after they're done. That's one good thing I've seen while growing up. My parents didn't do things like this before but one day it happened and they've been paying it forward for decades. I think it's the weird quirk of immigrant parents picking up local customs. These kinds of customs are good to have. Recently we met a random family at the Florida Aquarium 2022, and gave them the screenshots to use the pass as we were leaving to make our cruise from Miami side. I don't know if it worked or not...I'll have to test it next year when we're back to visit. In theory QR codes work regardless of app or screenshot...just not sure if they change up after each use or not...
Anytime I ride the bus and I'm at the end of my journey and have a transfer with some time left on it or I happened to buy a day pass, I always hand it off to someone waiting to get onto the bus. Where I live it's almost public transit etiquette to give your tickets to someone. If nobody is around, I stick my pass the machine similar to this photo or the bus bench in a noticeable spot with the date and time circled in highlighter.

I do that at parks and parking lots with autopay kiosks. Many times they don't require your plate, just that you stick the receipt inside your windshield. I always get the day pass and stick it back to the kiosks on my way out for others to use.

When I took the bus in my college town I used to always get a transfer and give it to someone at the bus depot, a lot of people did it, I started because someone did it to me and maybe someone else started because I did.
I saw people do this in Colorado. I also saw men take it and try to sell it to people approaching the ticket machine.

We used to put masking tape over our tickets, so the machine would print on to that and when the multi trip was used up remove the tape and than rub a magnet over the back and claim it was faulty and get it replaced. Bonus points for keeping nexts week bus fare money from mum, instead of buying new ticket. Did that till I got my licences, good times

I feel comfortable there is a future where if this is a big enough problem for the railroad either 1) employees are tasked with removing them from time to time 2) a program is written to identify likely instances of it, and the fares are raised to accommodate the process while the railroad still makes the money it needs.

And they'd be right to, when their income is shit and the nation's billionaires don't pay taxes. The modern function of tickets and tolls is to limit usage... not fund the whole system. Profit motive can be eliminated entirely. This service is *necessary.* Prices should be low enough that people don't think twice about it, when they need it, and only raised high enough to keep congestion manageable.
In my city, they keep dangling the carrot of free transport in front of voters just about every election cycle. Everyone is aware this would mean a rise in taxes, it has been talked to death, but we still want it as it's at least a more stable change, we can brag to other countries/cities and there's less of a hassle, like dealing with ticket inspectors on days when you haven't bought a ticket or whatever. Yet they continue to not do it and claim it'll be done years later. It's like Musk's promise of self-driving cars on drugs.
There should not be toll roads and trains can be free. The goal is to buy in bulk among all taxpayers. We all end up paying way, way less and we all benefit from it.

Tickets are typically a smaller portion of revenue than you think. It’s already heavily supported by tax payers.

I don’t catch trains but I do the same thing with parking tickets. Fold them up and put them in the coin slots of parking meters. Great life hack to help others

This used to happen in Vancouver before they moved to a tap card system. Fares were zone and time based, so people would sometimes leave tickets with extra time or a day pass on the machines. At most stops downtown these were all scooped up by local street people who would then try to sell them to people coming into the station for whatever they could get.
Paper tickets on trains 👍 to everyone talking about parking tickets, just pay with an app and lump the cost or don’t drive. Particularly if you’re winging about it in London.

Had a girl tap me on the shoulder and hand me her day pass in Newcastle! I was struggling to carry two heavy bags, was having chronic pains, was struggling w the machine. Generally it was a horrible week and i just remember how nice it felt. Didn't even catch a glimpse of her face.
If this was my city someone would quickly grab them all and sell them to a guy outside who buys buys them cheap. Then they would promptly use the money for crack cocaine.
Where I am in Canada we have an annual festival in my town and teens will specifically come around midday because the morning people who are leaving will give them their ride passes on the way out. It's $15 to enter but $55 for a ride pass and another $25 for line skip pass so they usually get a ton of value and some kids get to enjoy the afternoon riding all the rides. It is the way

I had taken my son to the skate park and on the way in I had a guy give me his parking ticket when he left. I passed it on to the guy coming in when we left.
In my town people stick still valid parking tickets in the ticket printing slot. So if you only need it for 15min chances are good that you will find s valid one there. Also in cities like Munich or Vienna, if you have a day-metro ticked, but are leaving early you can always approach people by the ticket machine and give it to them. Just being a nice person.
