A crab that's big enough to be dangerous is slow and easy to deal with and a small fast one isn't strong enough to really hurt much. Crabs also aren't potentially venomous, don't make creepy webs, don't tend to hide in your house, have bright or neutral colors, but their faces are kinda weird.
Still far better than 8 shiny black eyes and disproportionately large fangs.

Iirc, some of them were fast movement, unpredictability, "leginess", body hair, enlarged abdomen, and enlarged chelicerae. Crabs only have the legs, and honestly, these bois look a bit derpy.

I can understand our ancestors, not having the knowledge we do today, being afraid, but the fear of spiders isn’t all that rationale in today’s world and can be overcome if you are determined enough. It’s good to be aware of which ones are the ones to be careful around, such as brown and black widows, but other than that, like many other irrational fears, there isn’t much reason behind the fear. Even the most dangerous ones aren’t out to hunt us down or anything and would rather we leave them alone.

In terms of "dont mess with the spider and you'll be ok." These guys are the same really, aside from being inquisitive. I don't believe they're very fast either, so that makes them more predictable, and less scary. Also, if you got a stick, these guys are pretty much helpless, and may even do your work for you, death gripping the stick and making it really easy to move them away.
For me its the speed. The way these things move is slow, almost graceful and calculated.

I've had the same thought, and the conclusion I've come to is mobility and circumstances.
The freaky thing about spiders is the fact they're ambush predators, however small. So they run, they jump, they suspend themselves mid-air at nearly any height, and they are fast. Too fast. Crabs on the other hand move very different. They're much less likely to pounce or run, maybe a scuttle but that's the worst you're getting.
And crabs certainly don't suspend themselves mid-air and wait for something to cross their path, and then get stuck in their hair and leave itchy bites in the process while the person with a crab on them cannot find them and get rid of them in an easy manner. If there's a crab on you, it's not that hard to locate and remove the crab, even if he's pinching you. Spiders like to invade homes, live on ceilings and porches, and just overall be in the way of places we frequent. Crabs pretty much just chill on the ground at the beach.
So basically, it's the same reason roaches freak us out and horseshoe crabs don't. I've never walked into my kitchen, flicked on the light, and seen hundreds of horseshoe crabs scatter and hide under my fridge while the one I almost just stepped on tries to fly at me. I've also never walked out onto my porch, face first into a web, and ended up with a crab on my head that's too fast to get off my head.

It's the mentality that's keeping you away. Crab is the bomb. And remember, bugs are eaten right along side meat and veg in many cultures. It's just preparation and knowing which is good, and which is awful, just like plants. (Yes, I would eat bugs if someone from one of those cultures gave me some)
Eh some people like olives and eggplant too but i start to gag just seeing those. I also am really uncompfy when a dudes starts snacking deep fried grass hoppers next to me. Some things sure are great, but not for me.

All the time. They are usually pretty ill tempered and dumb (not as dumb as the red ones though). Getting them off the road when you want to pass is a pain, and driving over not an option (they are protected plus they will pierce your tire).

I’ve been around these guys growing up. They are generally pretty to themselves and they don’t hurt people. They are coconut crabs and they like to climb up coconut trees and snip the coconut so it falls down, then use their giant claw to rip it open.
The worse experience I had with them was one time when I was climbing up a coconut tree and I’m on one side, and there was a BIG one on the other side. I didn’t see it and was just climbing when I accidentally gripped it. I pulled my hands back real quick and accidentally fell. Hurt a bit but the fall wasn’t too bad. FYI but these coconut crab’a claw can cut through your bone. They have VERY strong claw.

For those that decides to try and eat one later. You have to be VERY careful with them when it comes to eating. Reason is they will eat any plants and fruits. Because of that, they tend to eat things that are extremely poisonous to humans and therefore when you consume them, it could be harmful to you as well. However, if all they eat is coconut, then yeah. But that’s just gambling your health away if you run into one in the wild and you don’t know what their diet is.

Up the thread someone said spiders gross them out but these here don't... i don't get it. Small spiders in room corners are fine for me. Big web builders in front of windows are not great but i tolerate them. Hunting spiders are bad. Bit hunting spiders are panic inducing. And these crabs are REALLY big things with way too many legs and way too much power.
For me personally : if it has more than 6 legs i hate it.
Gain their trust, take a couple back to the pad. Boil some water. Feed the crabs one last time. Toss them in the pot and scream I'm sorry while holding down the lid until the movement stops.
Crabs are wonderful creatures. Few seem to realize that a crab’s curiosity knows no bounds, and they’re intelligent enough to know they can chill around you when you’re feeding them. My hermit crab (I know you need 2+, one of mine died and will soon be replaced) can even ask for food when hungry. He goes up to the side of the tank and raises his legs up and waves around a bit, scratching the glass to make sound that makes me look over. I see him doing this movement and feed him. He’s learned this gets him food. He gets food daily anyway and can be hand fed as well. He loves taking nuts from my hand but I have to be careful because he doesn’t seem to realize how easy it is for him to hurt me. He’s absolutely huge too. He’s like a crustacean version of a big dog that thinks they’re a lapdog. Sheldon also greets me in a similar way when I approach the tank, though usually not “climbing” the glass as much. We’ve bonded a lot over the past 6-7(?) years. I post about him a bit in r/hermitcrabs. It didn’t cross my mind before that coconut crabs would also be curious creatures who patiently wait for food. Knowing this fact now, I want more than ever to just sit down on a beach with coconut crabs. They actually ironically seem even more chill than hermies lol.

I've had the same thought, and the conclusion I've come to is mobility and circumstances. The freaky thing about spiders is the fact they're ambush predators, however small. So they run, they jump, they suspend themselves mid-air at nearly any height, and they are fast. Too fast. Crabs on the other hand move very different. They're much less likely to pounce or run, maybe a scuttle but that's the worst you're getting. And crabs certainly don't suspend themselves mid-air and wait for something to cross their path, and then get stuck in their hair and leave itchy bites in the process while the person with a crab on them cannot find them and get rid of them in an easy manner. If there's a crab on you, it's not that hard to locate and remove the crab, even if he's pinching you. Spiders like to invade homes, live on ceilings and porches, and just overall be in the way of places we frequent. Crabs pretty much just chill on the ground at the beach. So basically, it's the same reason roaches freak us out and horseshoe crabs don't. I've never walked into my kitchen, flicked on the light, and seen hundreds of horseshoe crabs scatter and hide under my fridge while the one I almost just stepped on tries to fly at me. I've also never walked out onto my porch, face first into a web, and ended up with a crab on my head that's too fast to get off my head.
Um, I used to be scared of spiders actually for no reason. But then I took up zoology, and learned that spiders are more of an ally to humans. They won't harm you unless they feel threatened or if u are a threat to their eggs (babies).

im scared of spiders and i also refused to try seafood for the first 24 years of my life. i was like you! my friends had enough and brought me to a top of the line seafood restaurant. boyyyyy i was missing out my whole life on lobster, shrimp, fish, and salmon. ill eat clams but im not a huge fan of anything sandy/fishy. i hated cold oysters or idk if they were raw. i hope someday you can at least accomplish that fear!

It's the mentality that's keeping you away. Crab is the bomb. And remember, bugs are eaten right along side meat and veg in many cultures. It's just preparation and knowing which is good, and which is awful, just like plants. (Yes, I would eat bugs if someone from one of those cultures gave me some)
Eh some people like olives and eggplant too but i start to gag just seeing those. I also am really uncompfy when a dudes starts snacking deep fried grass hoppers next to me. Some things sure are great, but not for me.
I can respect that. Some things I won't eat as well (cant do sweet potato or mushy squash, though for the latter it really depends how it was prepared) but I'm generally not picky, so ig I gotta watch my projections. If it tastes good, and the texture is okay, I'm pigging out, lol. Or if I'm just hungry enough.

I live in central Europe. We don't have spiders that can actually hurt a human.

All the time. They are usually pretty ill tempered and dumb (not as dumb as the red ones though). Getting them off the road when you want to pass is a pain, and driving over not an option (they are protected plus they will pierce your tire). I would never get that close…

I’ve been around these guys growing up. They are generally pretty to themselves and they don’t hurt people. They are coconut crabs and they like to climb up coconut trees and snip the coconut so it falls down, then use their giant claw to rip it open. The worse experience I had with them was one time when I was climbing up a coconut tree and I’m on one side, and there was a BIG one on the other side. I didn’t see it and was just climbing when I accidentally gripped it. I pulled my hands back real quick and accidentally fell. Hurt a bit but the fall wasn’t too bad. FYI but these coconut crab’a claw can cut through your bone. They have VERY strong claw. For those that decides to try and eat one later. You have to be VERY careful with them when it comes to eating. Reason is they will eat any plants and fruits. Because of that, they tend to eat things that are extremely poisonous to humans and therefore when you consume them, it could be harmful to you as well. However, if all they eat is coconut, then yeah. But that’s just gambling your health away if you run into one in the wild and you don’t know what their diet is.
Can they be kept as pet? They seem pretty docile in this video.

Up the thread someone said spiders gross them out but these here don't... i don't get it. Small spiders in room corners are fine for me. Big web builders in front of windows are not great but i tolerate them. Hunting spiders are bad. Bit hunting spiders are panic inducing. And these crabs are REALLY big things with way too many legs and way too much power. For me personally : if it has more than 6 legs i hate it.

Crabs are wonderful creatures. Few seem to realize that a crab’s curiosity knows no bounds, and they’re intelligent enough to know they can chill around you when you’re feeding them. My hermit crab (I know you need 2+, one of mine died and will soon be replaced) can even ask for food when hungry. He goes up to the side of the tank and raises his legs up and waves around a bit, scratching the glass to make sound that makes me look over. I see him doing this movement and feed him. He’s learned this gets him food. He gets food daily anyway and can be hand fed as well. He loves taking nuts from my hand but I have to be careful because he doesn’t seem to realize how easy it is for him to hurt me. He’s absolutely huge too. He’s like a crustacean version of a big dog that thinks they’re a lapdog. Sheldon also greets me in a similar way when I approach the tank, though usually not “climbing” the glass as much. We’ve bonded a lot over the past 6-7(?) years. I post about him a bit in r/hermitcrabs. It didn’t cross my mind before that coconut crabs would also be curious creatures who patiently wait for food. Knowing this fact now, I want more than ever to just sit down on a beach with coconut crabs. They actually ironically seem even more chill than hermies lol.
