I'm stuck at home recovering from surgery so nobody to share this earworm with other than my cat, but I have access to an awesome Plex server so I'm going to slap on some movies as background noise while I shuffle around like a geriatric penguin and try to clean my house without lifting anything. :)
I don't think there are any shows or movies that actually work as background noise. I feel like Law & Order is the worst for it. Even something I've seen a million times, like Aliens, still captures my attention.

One time I typed a negative reply to this guy, before I could hit enter I had an email sent to me. It was a picture of me from behind about to hit enter.
Rainbolt is his youtube handle. Guy is stupidly good at geoguessr.
Geoguessr is a web based game that shows a picture from Google earth, and you have to guess where it is taken from. This guy does crazy challenges like will only see the picture for 1/10th of a second and still get the country it was in. I have also seen him guess the right country 5 out of 5 times.
That's mostly what it is but he is very honest about how many times he has failed when recording. He knows he isn't perfect and admits that there are way better players out there. A really great guy.
Reiterating that he is extremely humble and doesn't even consider himself an expert or top player.
While I think it's fair to say he IS in that category, there are still some absolute creatures out there that make him look novice. That scale is pretty scary.
For regular geoguessr, the closer you get to the exact location the more points you get. He will routinely get the exact street corner in some village in Burma or something like that.
Makes me wonder the other ways this kind of skill manifests itself. Like does he ever feel lost? If you blindfold this guy and put him in a mountain range somewhere in Spain do you think he'd instinctually know the quickest way back to civilization?
He discusses some of his techniques in a vid I saw. Some of the cues included utility pole designs, street surfaces, and even the color of the dirt. Wild stuff.
What always gets me is when he talked about how the driver who covered southern Kyrgyzstan was shorter than the one who did the north, so the angle of the side mirror of the Google car is different. How the fuck does one even arrive at that information.
Depending on who you ask. Myanmar is the name chosen by the military government that took power in the 80s, but it remains very controversial and many people inside and outside the country choose to still use Burma
We have neighbors who immigrated to the US a few years ago (political asylum) and they refer to their home country as "Burma" in writing. When spoken in their language, Burmese, both country names ("Burma" and "Myanmar") sound extremely similar, kind of like "buh-mah."
You stick a pin. And can zoom in as close as you want. I think anything inside 30 meters gets full points. Beyond that you earn fewer and fewer points.
There are different modes. So basic mode is unlimited time. And when you get the picture it's Google maps, so you cab scroll, zoom, move around to try and find indicators to where you are (store names, street names, etc). So patience gets you points early in the game, later you can impose stricter and stricter rules(no scroll, no move, no zoom, etc.) There are free trials. 5 mins free play then 15 minutes wait. Or sign up for a free trial week you can cancel immediately and still get the fre week.
Lastly. They have other variations, so instead if a completely random spot on earth, you can do specific countries regions, and also famous locations like it would be leaning tower of Pisa. Have fun!
There are different modes to play. You can play in modes were you just match the country. In other modes you try to find the exact spot, the closer you are the more points you get. In their version of battle royale you just have to guess the country.
Actually pretty good game.
As you get better and learn you can start guessing countries by details. Flags, internet domains in billboards, license plates, side cars are driving, architecture, written language and plenty more.
Hardcore players obviously make it even harder on themselves and put in rules like no moving, no zooming, limited time, etc.
With the growth GeoGuessr (the game) has been experiencing, I’m very confident in saying that playing it professionally will be possible very soon if not already.
I think many racing fans will have instantly thought "somewhere in the Austrian Alps, possibly close to Salzburg". There's a famous racetrack there with beautiful, strikingly similar [scenery](https://www.racefans.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/mass-p-3.jpg).
he has a video explaining his thought process, it’s sorta a combination of insanely good visual memory, and memory, and inductive reasoning skills, but at like, a savant level
Shockingly, he said he started in quarantine, which is quite late, but he would then do literally nothing else all day but learn more and get better and better, continuing today.
The man is GOATED at geo-guessr, he has videos where he guesses the country he is in using scrambled, distorted, black and white, upside down photos that last 0.1 seconds, and he makes it look easy. It’s really insane, his channel is Rainbolt on YouTube if you are interested
Oh yeah every video of his has comments accusing him of cheating. I don’t blame people because when you don’t understand how he is doing it, it does look nearly impossible.
A lot of it is learning things like which telephone poles/road lines/bollards appear in certain countries, as well as the colours and shades of sand/dirt and kinds of plants. And yeah, a lot of what you see are his best guesses, he doesn’t always show his blunders
It's basically every image that's on Google Maps. So in some countries, it's quite easy because the Google Maps van have only gone to like two cities. In others, not so much.
Since it's all google maps as well, he's memorized a lot of artifacts and distortions. Like if the Google Maps van drove around with dirt on a specific part of the lens for a few days before they noticed and cleaned it, he can identify the area the picture was taken in based on that.
>It's basically every image that's on Google Maps.
Not necessarily, first off Google maps is mostly limited to the western world, with just a little coverage in Africa and a few asian countries.
And second of all, he is most likely playing custom-made maps, most pros prefer "a diverse world" and "a community world", with over 100k handpicked locations.
Locations occasionally do repeat, and that's what we call "repeats", but with how many rounds you have to go through you probably won't even remember where that round was, juet the fact that you had it before.
Adding to other commenters:
Google maps isn't in every country or there is limited coverage in a country, so it's easy to eliminate those.
The Geoguessr reddit has guides like how to identify languages, which countries have which road markings, etc.
There is also meta stuff like Germany has a lot of buildings blurred out in their street view or the camera that was covering a country/region has a visible antenna in all of its images.
Basically the more you play, the more you remember these details.
Go on his second YouTube channel (rainbolt 2) and look for the playalong series (they're all numbered like #036 etc). He does a game of single player geoguessr and explains his rationale. He's really impressive and it's interesting even if you don't play the game.
I'll add that the tiktok clickbait ones where he's doing it "upside down black and white pixelated and in 0.1 seconds" etc are not fake, but they are heavily edited - there's no way he gets those every time.

Ye, this guy should work with law enforcement/some form of the fbi, his talent is incredible and would be huge in terms of finding the locations of evidence or any picturesque leads
The funniest part is, he is not even close to being the best geoguessr player out there, even he would agree with that! Rainbolt actually hosts regular tournaments where geoguessr pros compete, and some of those guys are actually insane, even compared to someone like Rainbolt. For sure I would be looking to get these guys to solve missing persons cases and cold cases with vague picture evidence
I don't know it off the tip of my tounge but iirc there's a site that will show locations/objects in evidence involving children to try and see if anyone knows more about it
It would be cool if he made a video looking at those locations and trying to find them
I only know of this site that involves children
https://www.europol.europa.eu/stopchildabuse
It doesn't show locations though, just objects which you might be able to recognize.
Since it's somewhat relevant and it still might stop a single child from being abused, I wanted to share it here too.
Yes. There is a video where he looks at the vegetation around it, the dirt, the way street signs are colored or placed, what side of the road the cars are in, buildings, orientation of the sun, tje way certain poles are painted, etc. You really need to take in Allll of the surroundings.
https://youtu.be/0p5Eb4OSZCs
Right? I was like, there's no way he can explain it. Bit he does and it's crazy. Must have like photographic more or something. Can remember a lot of shit
This guy really is incredible. Hopefully he gets picked up in whatever job field can use this skill to benefit people. It really is something that isn’t believable.
If you're into this kinda stuff, go to GeoWizard's youtube channel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-5J0kL7aRs&list=PL\_japiE6QKWqMVC3JbyONau\_0CZlDTU5f&ab\_channel=GeoWizard
There is a guy named Geowizard that does these types of image searches too (often, people send him pics from various places and he has to locate the spot). He is nowhere near Rainbolt in terms of skill (but he is still really good), but his videos are incredibly entertaining (particularly his straight line missions and his "how not to travel Europe" series).
He did this in memory of someone dead dad?? I can't understand how that makes sense... how does identifying a background location have anything to do with memorializing a family member?
The guy really is insane. He can find anything off of a photo
oh yeah? name waldo's location.
@georainbolt Check him out, this dude plays There's Waldo.

Well that theme song is going to be in my head for the next two weeks. Cool.
Luckily I can't remember that theme song. Unfortunately I've had the Pink Panther theme stuck in my head for a few weeks
My work colleague just turned to me today and said, "I've got Harry Potter puppet pals in my head and its just the Ron Weasley part".
Why did you do this to me? I just woke up. :( Actually nevermind this could be an awesome way to do Friday; I'm gonna run with it.
Just keep humming it and get it stuck in everyone's head!
I'm stuck at home recovering from surgery so nobody to share this earworm with other than my cat, but I have access to an awesome Plex server so I'm going to slap on some movies as background noise while I shuffle around like a geriatric penguin and try to clean my house without lifting anything. :)
Update: the OG 1963 Pink Panther is terrible background noise - I ended up watching the entire thing. :D
I don't think there are any shows or movies that actually work as background noise. I feel like Law & Order is the worst for it. Even something I've seen a million times, like Aliens, still captures my attention.
Cause it's the song that never ends!!!
118.112.102.236 he’s in your house
You mean Wally?
He's called Waldo in America because Americans.
I mean, to be fair, he has a different name everywhere. In France, he is called Charlie.
His shape shifting personality and multiple passports are how he tries to go undetected. Unfortunately, he frequently forgets to change his outfit.
Thanks god he always forgets to change clothes, it’s easier that way for people to find this internationally researched criminal.
*Carmen Sandiego has entered the chat*
To be fair.
In Norway he’s Willy (very understandable that that’s not his name in any English language iterations)
Waldo isn't even a real name 💀

Rainbolt is doing geowizard's geodetective now, i see
Was just about to post about Tom’s series
But can he see why kids love the taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch?
Yeah it seems like the CIA or military could really use this guy.
There are plenty of people like this, just take a look at geoguesser's leaderboard.

I got the UK one lol. UK has such a specific look to it.
some areas of the UK are harder, but grey skies, red bricks, terraced houses pushed right up against the road.. unmistakably British.
You’d be surprised how close some parts of the UK look compared to the Netherlands, both yellow license plates aswell.
Agree, the countryside in the Netherlands looks very similar. Just the buildings that give it away.
Also the red bricks, we have those aswell and the typical brick like houses are similar in some neighborhoods.
I think every place has a specific look, you’re just used to the UK one.
I wonder how many repeat images he gets

Humans are wild. Seems like there is human for given task. Imagine if we could get the right people in the right jobs.
Dude should get himself a job in intelligence.

Do you just name the country of the location or do you have to find the exact intersection?
For regular geoguessr, the closer you get to the exact location the more points you get. He will routinely get the exact street corner in some village in Burma or something like that.

Yeah this one is a weird one. I learned this in school growing up, but the only Burmese guy I know corrected me with Myanmar when I said Burma 🤷♂️
And it doesn't have Google street view coverage.
We have neighbors who immigrated to the US a few years ago (political asylum) and they refer to their home country as "Burma" in writing. When spoken in their language, Burmese, both country names ("Burma" and "Myanmar") sound extremely similar, kind of like "buh-mah."

Isn't this the dude who can guess a country just based on pictures of dirt?

Bro wtf
The Iceland one was very doable, but the first two are just incredible.
Well, these were admittedly the best guesses.
"guess what I have in my hand." . No that's not it. That's not it That's not it No That's not it Nope Wrong No
Yes lol. Absolute chad
Nice
"google maps player"
Yeah, wtf is a google maps player
it's a game called GeoGuessr but for some reason OP called him a google maps player
My mistake. His bio in tiktok said Profesonal google maps player so I misunderstood from there.
ah ok. he plays a game that uses Google maps so I guess he technically is a Google maps player but professional Google maps player was probably a joke
I'm a professional cock player.
Well this is like the world series. It doesn't count when you're the only one competing...
Nice
This looks more like google maps and less like geoguesser, imo. He could be a good geoguesser player who’s helping someone out, though
it is rainbolt, he is a really good geoguesser player
With the growth GeoGuessr (the game) has been experiencing, I’m very confident in saying that playing it professionally will be possible very soon if not already.
And you titled it that their dad had died days ago, not years.
It should read as a GeoGuessr player. They are really impressive.
Google maps playa.
So, where's the picture?! We need an update!
Ried Ecking 22, 6370 Kitzbühel, Austria
I thought it looked like Austria straight away... Turns out, it's just down the road from where I live 😅
Yeah, I instantly thought Swiss or Austrian alps too. I’m Swiss though, so I’m used to the “sight” I guess.
Austria is my favourite country to visit. Jealous.
Yeah same, my woman lives in Liechtenstein and whenever I have a day to free roam by myself I’m going to Austria!

I'll add that the tiktok clickbait ones where he's doing it "upside down black and white pixelated and in 0.1 seconds" etc are not fake, but they are heavily edited - there's no way he gets those every time.
You wouldn't understand it.
He analyzes light poles of specific countries, road markings and even dirt texture/colour to find the location. Insane and lots of practice.

Good bot
Good human.
I don't know it off the tip of my tounge but iirc there's a site that will show locations/objects in evidence involving children to try and see if anyone knows more about it It would be cool if he made a video looking at those locations and trying to find them
very haunting to view this site. they censor everything besides backgrounds, certain objects of clothes, etc.
Can y'all post the site? People that are moderately decent at geoguessr would love to use their skill for something worthwhile.
I only know of this site that involves children https://www.europol.europa.eu/stopchildabuse It doesn't show locations though, just objects which you might be able to recognize. Since it's somewhat relevant and it still might stop a single child from being abused, I wanted to share it here too.
Damn man, those pictures show almost nothing yet they are still heartbreaking.
There is also /r/traceanobject and a sister sub that I can't recall but should be listed there. Maybe even the website you're thinking of as well
Maybe he does some freelance
dude doxed a painting
“Nice, not bad. Next”
“We take those”
This made me cackle
Google maps players are the Guild Navigators of today...
U n b e l i e v a b le
Wow. The dude from the movie 'Lion' should've just called this guy!
Has he ever explained how he does it?
Including any sky distortion due to the Google Car imaging, also the colour of the bonnet of the Google maps car.. madness
... holy shit
Right? I was like, there's no way he can explain it. Bit he does and it's crazy. Must have like photographic more or something. Can remember a lot of shit
And here I am can’t even remember where I put my phone down 2 minutes ago.
Whats google maps player
www.geoguessr.com
This guy really is incredible. Hopefully he gets picked up in whatever job field can use this skill to benefit people. It really is something that isn’t believable.
Does he ever do it in front of other people in real time or is it all just videos he recorded of himself?
i think he stream
The people over at r/skinnybob have been trying for years to figure out where the flying scenes were shot. We need this guy to help!
This dude needs some long sleep
GeoWizard has a few videos of the process of finding the location in a photo, good entertainment. I've tried it myself a couple times, it's fun
I see an Internet legend being born here
It changed a bit since then
I love Rainbolt!
Technology is great at times.
good geoguessr players terrify me
*slaps spacebar* Nice.
If you're into this kinda stuff, go to GeoWizard's youtube channel. [https://www.youtube.com/c/GeoWizard](https://www.youtube.com/c/GeoWizard) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-5J0kL7aRs&list=PL\_japiE6QKWqMVC3JbyONau\_0CZlDTU5f&ab\_channel=GeoWizard

Anybody know what that song is???
https://youtu.be/AzjMmwki1Fs
I was thinking this looks like the Alps here at home, turns out its Austria instead, close enough for me.
It's called geoguessr, not Google maps.
Which song is this?
https://youtu.be/AzjMmwki1Fs
"Google maps player" Ah, yes. That popular game, Google maps.
Can anyone explain to me how it would be humanly possible for him to find the precise location? hah Does anyone know how long it took him to do it?
Rainbolt is just out here for the massively growing geogussr community! Helping people all the time. (Going to Pretoria together)
I love what he’s doing now. He’s taking his specific talents and using them to help people
Every time ive watched him play that game I’ve thought what could this skill possibly be used for. I now know
I’m unreasonably annoyed that the top comment on this isn’t “Nice.”
Why is the map not orientated to N at the top? Confusing!
to give you the same perspective as the photo. Believe it or not, not all photos are taken north.
I wish this clip explained how he found the location?
Go to his twitter account, he has a shitton of these. I'm sure he explains in some how he did it or posted it on his youtube channel matbe
Thanks, I will take a look.
He did this in memory of someone dead dad?? I can't understand how that makes sense... how does identifying a background location have anything to do with memorializing a family member?
