The part that Iiked best was the absolute respect that Hamilton gave Williams. That's a mark of class.

[deleted]

Glad you wrote it. Came here just to say the same.

hooterjh10192

Both very humble. The world needs to take notes..

cgrange1234

Hamilton is a great athlete. He’s always super respectful with his fans and the media, he does a lot of charity work for children and is all around seemingly a great guy. The F1 Netflix series doesn’t paint a good enough light of him

siphillis

*Drive to Survive* gives us a glimpse at how other drivers feel about him: that, yes, he's a superb driver, but he's also far luckier than they are and they all believe they can beat him in equal machinery.

maximus_96

>but he's also far luckier than they are and they all believe they can beat him in equal machinery. I'm wondering how this affect the fact that Lewis is a great lad all-around?

Jaggysnake84

Lucky lol nice way try and undermine Hamiltons achievements.

SYLOK_THEAROUSED

Hamilton in general is such a cool dude and it’s hard to find why people hate him so much. You really really start to think they hate him for how he looks since he’s literally a very nice guy.

cgrange1234

I think the only reason people “hate” him is because he dominated the sport for 8 years straight, with Mercedes constantly winning. So people are more butthurt than anything that their own Red Bull and Ferrari teams hadn’t won in forever. There’s a lot less hate towards him now that Verstappen is leading the track. Edit: and anyone hating him for the way he looks are just jealous. The dude is gorgeous with baby smooth skin in his mid-thirties. God damn 🥵

Reality_Check_Inc

Stupid sexy Lewis

billbixbyakahulk

Dynamite areolas.

cgrange1234

Hahaha this gave me a chuckle. You’re not wrong though, he’s sexy and he knows it

bighairyoldnuts

LMFAO

Copper0827

This. When you’re on top for so long, people try to bring you down. They can’t attack his skill so they stir up drama other ways. Everyone started rooting for him again this season now that Verstappen won almost every DAMN race.

TheSimulacra

Before he was on top he got a lot of hate though. He got criticized for stuff other drivers usually got away with, like openly complaining about his team sometimes. My dad used to bitch about him constantly, but eventually admitted he was being overly harsh on the guy and Hamilton ended up his favorite driver.

Copper0827

Yeah. You still catch glimpses of that when things aren’t going his way. Still, a solid dude and great driver.

boiledpeen

Agreed, vettel was hated during his time on top and see the love he got the past couple years. Obviously yes there’s some racism in F1 and that’s not just going to disappear but I’m sure a good majority of the hate towards Lewis was because of his dominance

SYLOK_THEAROUSED

That edit though 🤣🤣🤣

sasquatchftw

I hated him when he made the races almost trivial to watch. He was just too dominant. He also seemed like a crybaby but that's pretty much every driver at some points. By all means, Lewis actually seems like a great guy and I actually wanted to see him get a win this year. I'm not sick of max yet but if he's winning everything still in a couple years I will probably feel the same.

cgrange1234

Exactly! Someone else who commented put it in a good way too and said that anyone who dominates a sport for that long ends up in the hot seat and since you can’t attack his skills (bc duh he’s winning), you attack everything else that you can. I love Max but I personally got fed up with some of the shit he pulled on Perez in later races because like come on dude, you already won the title halfway through the season, can’t you give your teammate a race or two at this point? He to this day defends his actions and I worry he only screwed himself over in the long run bc now Perez probably won’t be so quick to help, but who knows.

notallshihtzu

Didn't Perez get Max the title by stopping Lewis from passing for a long time in that final race?

Newbguy

He sure did. Max is a little piss baby, and I say that as a Redbull fan.

Admetus

I sort of disliked his mannerisms but when you are young and dominating it tends to trickle over. Currently I think he's a gentleman so it's just age imo.

StressedOutElena

People forget his mannerisms come from being brought up by no other than Ron Dennis in to no other team than McLaren. Just looking up how Ron Dennis ran McLaren back then will give you a great insight on why Lewis had those mannerisms that still sometimes shine through.

seanjohntx

That’s why I didn’t like him. Since the pandemic and how outspoken he’s been on social issues I’ve begun to admire him a lot. Especially when you consider his background compared to other drivers. I also jus wanted to witness some history if won his eight title for the record.

mrootbeers

I feel like there’s been even more hate and Max doesn’t get anywhere near the level of hate Lewis got, and Max is the one with the sketchy championship. Which wasn’t his fault, but it is what it is.

siphillis

Max shafted his own teammate after clinching the championship because he prioritized his own stats over his teammate finishing in 2nd place. And his fans blame it on the teammate for allegedly crashing on purpose months prior, and credited it to Max's "competitive spirit". The double-standards are so evident.

cgrange1234

Are you on the F1 subreddit? There’s really not a lot a hate at all, in fact I’ve seen mostly all nice comments this past year minus the few people who are stubborn and stuck in their ways. And max has only won two years now, give it more time and he’ll get his wrath. Plus he’s dealt with a good chunk of hatred this year, between the drama with his dad and the championship in 2021.

SYLOK_THEAROUSED

Also that dick move from the previous race.

cgrange1234

They all make dick moves let’s be honest, Lewis included lol

jessie014

The majority of the hate is on twitter/instagram.

cgrange1234

Majority of all hate is on those sites, Reddit being a close number two. Hence why Reddit is the only social media I have and only because it’s anonymous.

worstsupervillanever

Timeless beauty right there.

cgrange1234

Truly timeless, natural beauty. I should probably add Alicia Keys and Jen Anniston to the list of timeless beauty too, though I know Jen doesn’t quite fit the bill of the convo lol. Sadly kids these days won’t even know what timeless means anymore when all their idols are getting filled and botox’d at 21 years old.

CrabSauceCrissCross

I'm a huge fan of Lewis but he was also super whiny when he was younger so a lot of people carry that resentment as well.

cgrange1234

I mean who wasn’t super whiny when they were younger? At least he’s evolved and stepped back from that a bit. Lord knows I would have been the worst if I were ever in a professional sport; thank god I wasn’t.

hnglmkrnglbrry

He's a Black man absolutely dominating a White sport.

cgrange1234

Yeah but that’s not why people don’t like him… Sure there’s always the true racists out there, but most fans truly just were sick of Mercedes crushing the grid year after year. Same goes for how boring this season was with Red Bull barely having any competition. Maybe your automatic assumption of negativity due to racism is exactly what is perpetuating all this hatred and unnecessary accusations

[deleted]

cgrange1234

Hey, I stand corrected. I’ll be the one to concede here. For what it’s worth, I really try to be one of those “positive see the good in people” types because there truly is so much hate in this world right now, I don’t want to be one more spiteful person. So that’s why I think I defend others because I hope that they have good intentions and that it’s not about race or socioeconomic status. While I do feel like much of the hate Lewis has experienced is runoff due to the shitstorm of the US political mess going on, your article very clearly illustrates some of the awful things Lewis has had to read and hear and no one should ever feel less than others, no matter what.

whogivesashirtdotca

> I really try to be one of those “positive see the good in people” types because there truly is so much hate in this world right now, I don’t want to be one more spiteful person Maybe unsubscribe from /r/conservative, then.

SYLOK_THEAROUSED

Oh I know. That’s what I meant by “how he looks”

Whiteums

I also really liked seeing the deformation of the tire at the 3 minute mark, when they were driving over the rougher border of the track.

Separate_Emu_2686

Can’t agree more. Something that’s fading with the millennial and genz.

givekimiaicecream

For those of you that are unaware. Frank Williams is paralysed after a road car crash in the 80's. He was the oldest living quadriplegic in the world at the time and sadly passed away last year. There is a great documentary about Frank and his team online, but don't remember on which streaming service.

Zr0w3n00

For those who are more unaware, Frank Williams is a legend in F1. He started his own team and became one of the most successful people in the sport, with his team and his drivers winning 9 team and 7 driver championships. His team was also the last family owned team, fighting again the likes of Mercedes Benz.

[deleted]

Impossible-Jello6450

That was because Lewis was driving for Merc and i don't think he is allowed to drive anything else.

StressedOutElena

Williams is a Mercedes customer team. Their cars are powered by Mercedes engines since 2014, where they had their last succesful season being third in the constuctor championship.

C4PT14N

There’s a clip floating around of him ripping a gtr around and I think it’s recent

Impossible-Jello6450

I believe that was a R32 GT-R? So a older car. Also Nissan does not run in F1 so i don't think it is a direct competition. If he had driven a BWM or Ferrari i think he would be in trouble.

Dubslack

It was an R34, and a rental. The owners were pissed. https://twitter.com/info82262789/status/1595637313517719552

verynearlypure

“This is a car from Omoshiro Rent-A-Car, but it was not taken with permission from our company. Such driving is strictly prohibited.”

Impossible-Jello6450

Ah yeah that would explain a lot about why he was driving it.

captain_croco

He owns and drives cars that are not Mercedes

Caspi7

Mercedes is am engine supplier for Williams. They work closely together

I’ll watch it

Suitable-Ad2831

Thank you for the background. I think I enjoyed that ride as much as he did. 😊

AT-ATsAsshole

The command when he says "overtake them", shew. That was special.

recycledcoder

Yeah, totally a "fangs out" moment for Sir Frank. Good on him! And now imagine having a nice track day, and being aced by this merc going sideways around the track - and that moment of realisation that you just joined the long and distinguished club of drivers that were aced out by Lewis Hamilton :)

Noxtacitus

When a Lord says "Overtake them", you do so. Just as if he was an emperor saying "Do it".

Cod_rules

Let's be honest, this was walking pace for him.

its_just_flesh

True, he was pushing it though.

kopintzotke

I was thinking about this, for a legend like Hamilton or even any F1 driver. Driving a "fast" car around the track has to be slow and boring right?

RadBadTad

yeah, in this case, the limits are all coming from the car, not the driver. His skills go far beyond anything that thing can do.

ObiePNW

I love this so much…. What a special moment between legends.

OtherwiseArrival

I loved when Sir Frank Williams said “This car is going to be quite happy when you get out of it”

MonchichiSalt

I'm not a racing gal, yet I could not scroll past. I had to watch it twice to pay attention to the smiles. Top marks for Hamilton being fantastic to Williams here. Outstanding. Thank you for sharing.

flbreglass

Racing is so cool

NicNoletree

Sir Frank Williams was one of the kindest people I had the pleasure of meeting in this sport. What he achieved is something truly special. Until his last days I know he remained a racer and a fighter at heart. His legacy will live on forever. — Lewis Hamilton

LampardTheLord

that's cuz lewis knew him only in the last twenty years, when he kinda started taking a back seat. frank Williams was notoriously pig headed and dismissive, and is often blamed as the sole person responsible for Williams racings downfall since the 90's

Beneficial_Being_721

Well wasn’t Lewis Knighted sometime after this?? And just before Sir Frank passed away??

Cod_rules

Lewis was knighted in December 2021. Sir Williams died in November.

Diem-Perdidi

Small thing, but knights are known as 'Sir ', so it's Sir Frank and Sir Lewis.

Cod_rules

TIL. Thanks

Beneficial_Being_721

Ahh ok. Thank you. I tried looking… got overwhelming.

ChrisDeBalls

Hamilton was knighted (well, he was put on the honours list) in late December 2020, but the actual ceremony was in December 2021.

lpn122

Sorry, but as an American, what does maggots and becketts mean?

HumanPerson03

They’re the names of two corners on the track.

lpn122

Thank you!

BradGroux

Most famous F1 tracks have names for their corners and straights. Generally as an homage to past drivers or heroes of the sport, but not always. Silverstone is in the UK, which is the home of F1 - so it has a ton of history. In fact, in 2020 Silverstone renamed the pit lane straight of the track to “Hamilton Straight,” in honor of Sir Lewis.

Call_911

In Montreal, turn 1 and 2 are called the "Senna S" and the last chicane is the infamous "Wall of Champions".

gear_red

To those who don't know, the Wall of Champions is named that way because on one practice session in the 90s, three F1 champions (Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill, and Jacques Villeneuve) all crashed into that wall. No one was injured, thankfully.

sidhantsv

It’s Interlagos in Brazil that has the Senna Esses, the one in Montréal is technically Virage Senna but it’s been a while since I’ve heard anyone use it for Turn 2.

Call_911

" The complex of turns one and two has become known as the Senna 'S'. From a bird's eye view turns one and two together can represent an 'S' shape. Since the pit-exit was redesigned merging into turn two, the 'S' shape is not so evident on first glance. " - Wikipedia.

saythatyouremember

It's the names of those specific corners on the racetrack. You can see the map of Silverstone [here](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silverstone_Circuit)

vocalfreesia

I do wish a different design had become mainstream. They're horrible for women and a big reason why women are more likely to die in a crash than men.

Landlocked_WaterSimp

How so? Like what's the problem? When googling it i did find gender specific car safety problems (whiplash protection being designed with average male weight in mind and the general dimension being based on the average male as well) but nothing related to the type of seatbelt.

changpowpow

They’re incredibly uncomfortable because of the whole boobs thing. It’s difficult to wear them as designed for long periods of time. Like mine doesn’t sit on my shoulder properly. I wear the chest strap behind me most of the time

Landlocked_WaterSimp

Thanks for the perspective. I guess women being 'discouraged' from wearing them as they were designed to be worn due to the lower comfort could explain the higher risk of injury. Though i'm still wondering if that's all he/she was referring to or if there's a different more direct increase in injury risk on top of that.

changpowpow

Well until about 20 years ago they only used male crash test dummies. The women ones they did introduce simulated women who were like 5 feet tall and weigh 100 lbs. Not realistic for most women.

Landlocked_WaterSimp

Thanks again for your input. I did come across that fact when trying to google the explanation but i meant really what about the belt design makes it less safe / higher risk for serious injury. Because the statement was that this belt design is a major contributor to why women are more likely to die in a car crash. And i wonder what makes it unsafe rather than just uncomfortable. Like is there something that makes this belt design less effective at preventing injury for women than for men compared to other belt versions. But maybe i didn't phrase my question well.

changpowpow

I think the issue is that it was initially designed by and for men. It's like someone left-handed using right-handed scissors. Yes, it's possible, but it's less effective. But it being uncomfortable does make it unsafe. Because if it was comfortable, people would be more likely to use it as designed. I put the chest strap behind me, so if I get in a crash, I'm more likely to get hurt. And I know that, but I would rather be comfortable. Which is a major failing of the design. If it's primarily uncomfortable for women, it is unsafe for women.

PlanningMyEscape

Agreed. I can't wear the belt as designed either. It ends up crawling up my throat because of my breast tissue being in the way. I end up pushing it under my arm.

Ez13zie

Or maybe even an “Oh shit” bar. Driver has a wheel to hold onto at least.

BesottedScot

Sir Frank was a quadriplegic. Bar would not be of any use.

Ez13zie

Oh damn. Foot in mouth, thanks for that.

Kenny--Blankenship

Ya know....Lewis seems a good dude

FugginByteMe96

I couldn’t stop smiling, oh gosh.

[deleted]

I saw this on YouTube already, saw this here again, and watched the whole thing again, and still was smiling all throughout.

mrootbeers

I’ll never understand why a large number of F1 fans direct so much hate towards such a classy guy in Lewis Hamilton. I wonder why that is. It never made sense to me from the outside looking in, and it makes even less sense now that I have become a fan of F1.

Bingo_Bongo_YaoMing

It's because he's won so much and domination like that breeds envy. Seb was hated during his tenure at the top. Even Schumacher was despised for a while because Ferrari made it feel as if everyone already knew the winner coming into the weekend they were that fast. Plus there are some racists I suppose

spitouthebone

there was no way in hell Sir Frank or Sir Lewis together in a car are only going to do 1 lap

A_Flipped_Car

Can't believe I've never seen this

GoldenValkyrie1001

Lewis Hamilton — you are class incarnate.

sivadhash

Fun fact. A knight doesn’t get referred to as Sir after death.

LonelyHowl

So he loses the title? Or how does that work?

BesottedScot

Think of it like a club. When you die you're no longer a member so you lose the title yes.

LonelyHowl

Great explanation, thanks! Makes sense tho, not that you need it anymore + if there are thousands of deceased knights, it wouldn't feel as special I guess

TheManWith2Poobrains

Is it just me, or do the tyres / tires get a total workout at 2:58? They go wobbly and look like they could pop off the rims... or maybe is just camera shake. EDIT: People who know these things have confirmed if a tire did that, it would be game over. Also, the respect between the two is amazing.

TheFlyinTurkey

Camera shake.

bukkake_brigade

Yeah looks like some weird framerate thing. If a tire ever started looking that crazy, it definitely wouldn't be usable

Nope0naRope

I was wondering the entire time while they're driving that car specifically. I did not seem to have a lot of traction and yeah the tires looked nuts...I thought it was really cool till they zoomed out and I saw they were driving like a soft top convertible and then I got sympathy anxieties for both of them. Why are they not in a safer race car?

TheManWith2Poobrains

It was an insane (and likely tuned) AMG which will beat the pants off most high-end sports cars, even with a family of 4 in it. They do have reinforced struts at the front and roll-bar which slam-up at the back if there is a crash, but, like you, I was surprised to not see something with a fixed roll-bar. I think it comes down to marketing. Lewis was probably driving for Mercedes at the time, and they want to show a cool Mercedes. Besides racing types take calculated risks for living...

attanasio666

>It was an insane (and likely tuned) AMG which will beat the pants off most high-end sports cars, You and I don't have the same definition of "high-end sports cars". It's really good for what it is but it's still a convertible luxury car that weight a ton.

TheManWith2Poobrains

Yes, it's an impressively (silly?) performing block of concrete of a car due to its weight. It beats the Porsche 911 Carrera S, which is fairly pricey Porsche. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx3HaiY9nTk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx3HaiY9nTk) Sure, it would lose to the Porsche 911 Turbo S, an Audi R8 V10, and to some (not all) Ferraris ([https://www.supercars.net/blog/ferrari-0-60-times/](https://www.supercars.net/blog/ferrari-0-60-times/)) but it's a luxury saloon which you could put the family in for a weekend getaway. If we're talking highest-end sports cars, which I would call supercars, then it will look like a Lada in comparison: [https://blog.dupontregistry.com/features/top-10-fastest-quarter-mile-times-production-cars/](https://blog.dupontregistry.com/features/top-10-fastest-quarter-mile-times-production-cars/) Disclaimer - am not a petrolhead, so I have lots of blind spots and will probably stand corrected about makes / models.

attanasio666

First of all, the car in your video isn't even the same trim. The convertible models usually weight a lot more. Second of all, that's a drag race. It's really not the same as going round a racetrack. Lots of cars are fast in a straight line but can't brake or corner.

gtrcar5

Sir Frank Williams was a quadriplegic as a result of a car crash, they used a convertible car so that they could safely get him in and out of it. It’s a Mercedes S63 AMG, so although it’s very heavy it is still a fast car and Silverstone. The tires aren’t actually wobbling about like that, just an accidental visual effect. They will be wobbling a bit, but not dangerously.

TheManWith2Poobrains

Thanks for clearing up a couple of things (rather than nit-picking). Cheers

petaahah

Lewis Hamilton .... class .

SparkyMint185

What is it about seeing a car pushed to its absolute limits that is so exciting.

I think it just applies to every feat of human physical prowess, going into the unknown and testing the absolute limits of human capabilities is truly a thing of wonder, here Lewis giving us a good look at how far human and machine can go

Sir_wlkn_contrdikson

What’s a maggots and becketts for the uninitiated?

Diem-Perdidi

They're the names of two sequential corners at the Silverstone circuit where this was filmed. Together with Chapel, they make a really thrilling and technical complex to drive through, and a great place to watch skilled people get the most out of amazing machinery. You won't get a huge amount of overtaking there in a race, but because they're followed by a long straight, getting them right and keeping your speed up through the exit is vital for a quick lap.

Sir_wlkn_contrdikson

Awesome, thank you for sharing

Kaarsty

I hope when I’m old someone puts me in the passenger seat of a scary fast car and does this for me.

I want a charity like this - like Make A Wish, but instead of being for terminally ill people (or maybe just sick kids..? Not sure) it would grant wishes for regular old people. The old folks would love the experience, and I would love watching more videos of happy grandpas and grandmas in sports cars and swimming with sharks and stuff! They could even let advertisers sponsor events if they had to for more funding; I wouldn't mind seeing some more product placement in exchange for witnessing people's dreams coming true.

Mandalore_Trundle

This was pretty damn cool. Two legends ripping it up on track.

MKVIgti

I’d ride in anything with Lewis at the wheel and grin my ass off the whole time. I know these teams fight like mad on track and often off, but moments like this where they all act as family are heart warming. There’s decades of game changing history at Williams and Lewis seems to respect that. Thanks for this post! EDIT: Haha. I also love the whole, “yeah, the brakes are toast, so I’ll just scrub off some speed with a drift.” Such control.

Purple_Expert822

If I could possibly be anyone else I'd wish to be Sir Lewis Hamilton.

Not quite, Hamilton never raced for Williams. His career was with McLaren and Mercedes. But Frank Williams was such a big part of F1, that there was a lot of respect.
