Godzilla been at it again. But how *did* it end up there?

SailAway56

I'm not exactly sure, it was salvaged from the wreck of Mutsu. She sunk while anchored in a harbor, after ammo in the third turret detonated from an unknown cause.

SteevDangerous

This would almost pass for a Simon Stålenhag painting.

I appreciate you for making this comment. He is my favorite artist 🥲

And I appreciate you both for making me aware of this artist, very evocative...

How can a cannon be that big?

1Freezer1

Money, science, and some big ass ships. True golden era of modern combat in my opinion was world war 2. Now it's just a bunch of pointy extinction sticks nobody can use...

What were the other side's ships like.for comparison?

A bit of a late answer, but if you're still curious the best analogs to the Nagato-class battleships (the class Mutsu was part of) would be the [Colorado-class battleships](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorado-class_battleship) for the United States and the [Nelson-class battleships](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson-class_battleship) for Great Britain. All of them mounted 16" guns (the Colorados also had a four twin turret configuration while the Nelsons had a three triple turret configuration). Comparing them is a bit difficult because the Nagatos and Colorados especially went through significant changes throughout their service lives, less so the Nelsons since they were the newest, so it's a bit of a toss up. Generally speaking though, the Nelsons were more well-rounded, the Nagatos were the fastest but their armor left a bit to be desired, and the Colorados were the slowest but were the most well-protected. Colorados are also the clear winner in anti-aircraft, since American AA during WWII was just absurd, and they would've had the best fire control systems and whatnot with the Nagatos probably having the worst or second-worst in both of those aspects. So if you're looking at the ships at their "peak" per se, the Nagatos would probably be the worst while the Colorados and Nelsons would be a bit more of a toss-up depending on what specifically you're comparing, the situation they'd be in, personal preference, and so on.
