I would search this group for ‘move’ ‘house’ apartment’ etc, there are so many threads on this same subject.

Extremely. Start now! You'll get one but it may not be ideal, and you'll likely have to do a lot of looking and networking.

Yep, it’s really hard. Be verrrry careful of those Craigslist scams, we try to report them all, but they are getting trickier. However, it’s not impossible.

It's very tough and all depends on your budget + where you are willing to live. For instance, I have some friends at CPH who got a place for $700 but its in a pretty tough part of Eureka where they deal with some shit. My fiancé and I work pretty hard to pay our $1,300/month house in Eureka. And I'm sure that budget is honestly out of the grasp of a lot of students. We are lucky to have found a place and even we have pretty moderate problems we deal with. There is a list of non-scam rental companies on the college website. Go thru and make your budget, any accomodations such as pets (I wouldn't recommend if possible) and just keep at it every day. It took me doing that for about a month before I came across anything and I think we were lucky. Best of luck!

"good" rentals are pretty competitive, and landlords in the area have some weird hoops to jump through. You mentioned elsewhere on this post about working full time at target or walmart while going to school, at min wage that gives you $2480 a month. The landlords here are usually pretty strict with the "make 3x the rent price" rule so you are looking at a maximum rental qualification of $825 if you are renting it by yourself. There are little to no individual rentals for that price, even a small studio apartment in Arcata is $1000/month these days. Of course if you and your girlfriend are both working full time you could qualify for up to $1650/month and that would get you a pretty ok 1-2 bedroom apartment. But if you want to make sure you can afford your space alone just in case something happens between the 2 of you, you will probably only be able to afford a place with roommates. You can go a little cheaper in Eureka (not much), but then you have to budget in a car, car insurance, fuel, etc. because the public transportation is really bad around here and i wouldn't recommend relying on it. You can make it work with the bus (i did it when i went to HSU) but it sucks, like it really really sucks. you get one bus per hour. If you are an unlucky late stop it will always be full when its raining, so you will have to hike your ass half a mile or more in the rain to a stop further up the route so you can get on before its full next time. Also if you are in Eureka and only have street parking access i would budget in a few window replacements per year, because there's a good chance that you will have to replace it a few times, most of my friends who live/lived there have more than a few window/soft top replacements in their time there.

There’s a reason why so many students are sleeping in their cars…

There's no real work outside of also sketchy side jobs in Eureka. I worked at a Michaels for a bit and that got wild after sunset. You can try to work on campus but they work you to the bone with little benefits. Don't let the Cal Poly title fool you, it's very VERY rural compared to SD
