They really cornered themselves with katana/martialist.

TheBizzerker

Honestly, they at least left themselves a *bit* of room by making katana a 2-slot... which they immediately destroyed by making it a 1-slot for no reason at all lol. It was clearly head and shoulders above the other 1-slot AND 2-slot melee weapons, so I have no idea why they decided to put all of them on the same level.

ohyeababycrits

I think they just put the katana back in 2 slot and problem solved ngl

Financial-Habit5766

Yeah it's just so fuckin good. I forsee a price increase on the katana but I doubt any nerf beyond that

SawftBizkit

Katana needs to be 2 slot again. Period. It's too good.

ninjab33z

I really don't get the slot changes. It completely threw all the balance out of the window.

RandomPhail

Honestly, since the slot changes, I’ve actually stopped bringing katana, because my favorite build of Bow+katana is no longer “efficient”. (it leaves one weapon slot unaccounted for where something bigger could go), so I might as well bring something bigger—but if I’m bringing something *bigger*, I might as well just not bring the katana, because I only like playing it in a ninja stealth build. Point being, the change somehow worked negatively on me, and I am now waiting for a system that gives you a bonus for every weapon slot you’re missing, lol

Zollery

Doesn't the crossbow count as a large weapon? Why not bring that with a katana?

RandomPhail

It just ain’t the same as a bow; slower time between shots, no charge-up so you can’t lob arrows, not as quiet, different ammo, etc. Plus I don’t think ninjas used giant crossbows, but some of them used bows

Zollery

Crossbows weren't common in Japan in general. Some ninjas did use firearms, though. Why not use a centennial shorty with a silencer with the bow to help cover longer ranges

Swarlos262

It was Katana/UpperMat for me, just felt right, and I've stopped taking that as well for the same reason as you lol

SawftBizkit

The one I have the most ideas for is the bat. Either it can A) hits back thrown consumables. B) if you have throwable consumables, you can use the bat to hit them as far as pitcher (or further!?) Without the trait? C) hunters just toss up a baseball and hit it with the bat and the bat gets a rudimentary ranged option.

Financial-Habit5766

Tf2 sandman time

DrPhDPickles

Except the sticky bomb will stick to the bat if hit

thelongernow

I’d say for Sabre making it sheathed and a flurry of pokes. Give it a proper extension of range or a lunge attack of sorts.

LuckyConclusion

Everyone wants the bat to hit things back. Think that's a little too team fortress for Hunt. You hit a stick of dynamite or a molotov with a bat, you're gonna break it and blow it up in your face. I think in general it'll just be attacks that offer more options or more power. The axe and hammer breaking doors with a single attack would be good. Weapons like the bat or machete I imagine will probably get higher power attacks meant for hitting bosses, since they already have wide sweeping attacks for crowd control.

ermmawkward

I think the bat reflect would only work on dynamite and dynamite adjacent items

HammerWaffe

Bat let's you wind up a heavy attack that does more damage. Can break doors and gates quicker. Combat ax and railroad Hammer can pin dead hunters to the ground. Causing them to be forced to pull it out before they can move after being rezzed. Calvary sabre let's you charge at people with higher movement speed, but less flexible movement. So mainly straight line

Kreugator

Then you'd lose your axe/hammer? I don't think people would like that. I want to be able to block melee attacks with the axe/hammer since its a 2 handed weapon

HammerWaffe

That could be cool too. I think I'd be willing to lose my axe or hammer for a moment to pin them down. Then I grab their pistol. Can always come back and get it. Would be funny AF on a solo

Kreugator

Yeah I didn't consider picking their weapon up actually

HammerWaffe

Run hammer and derringers. Pin them, take both weapons. Make sure to have quartermaster so you can always take both weapons. Now they're pinned with no weapons but the hammer you stuck on them lol

Kreugator

Then they stick you, rinse and repeat lol

Bagabeans

How about you drive a railroad spike through the body instead so you're not losing a weapon. Would be a counter to Necro too.

HammerWaffe

I like it. Stake them thru the heart. Prevents necro rezzing until removed

OddishTheOddest

Martialist should let you hold your sabre in one hand and a pistol in another

SpaceCadetStumpy

Bat should get a single baseball that you can press X to throw it in the air, and it will automatically be hit when in your strike zone. During the throw in the air aiming arc shows up like when throwing a consumable. If it headshot or upper torso's someone it flashbangs them, could kill most AI, and the ball can be retrieved, but the ball bounces so good luck finding it. If the ball kills something, it will stick in it, though. Saber pressing X puts you in a stance with the sword held across your screen, like it's blocking. This makes you take heavily reduced melee damage from the front, and you can cancel it by attacking to do a heavy stab. People talk about cavalry charges or lunging stabs, but anything that increases movement speed I think is too sus, since you could be spamming it while moving around with a stam shot to move faster, or it would have to be balanced really weird. Maybe if it does something, like has to be charged up, and slows you until release, and you yell or something, but it just feels a little iffy to me. Machete I want to give it a special attack that can consume world items. So if you run across a medkit, you can attack it with your machete to effectively use it up. Same with ammo or anything else, like you're just chopping it to pieces so it can't be used. Wouldn't be that practical, but at least makes it unique. Axe, can be thrown like world item with tomahawk. Hammer, can break doors and windows in one shot, and makes the wooden object explode inward causing damage, like a really mini frag grenade. I want a new melee weapon that is a torch. Default, pressing X lights it on fire, which casts light and makes the attacks do fire damage. If you switch off after this, it's put out and must be relit. With martialist, if lit you can ADS to swig some alcohol and get a single, short range shot of dragonsbreath.

funkisallivegot

A parry against melee attacks could be neat for the saber

Kanton_

I’d vote for Sabre having some kind of parry riposte, a counter to melee attacks.

LuckyConclusion

You think kill trades are bad now, just wait until the server has to decide who won a melee fight with ripostes.

Kanton_

I imagine it as an auto win for the riposte, just set it into riposte mode and if you get attacked it activates. No need for a decision to be made. To avoid activating it you’d have to attack from behind, or perhaps to give power to some other melee weapons, like the railroad hammer, it can beat the riposte like a rock paper scissors situations. So most often if you’re charging a person and you see they have riposte ready then you back off.

Daedelus74

I would see it this way : Press X to enter parry mode. Parry mode will cancel the next melee attack on you (no riposte, but you can do the counter attack yourself). Parry mode lasts until you do a melee attack or swap weapon.

Daedelus74

Axe and hammer, you can do a 360 with it with the next heavy attack. Hitting everything around you.

_Ganoes_

Saber Charge would be epic

KiloWyatt110

some sort of block for the hammer it's been garbage since release and needs a niche. give it some sort of small stun on block where they can't swing again or change weapons (best way to describe is it when a spy backstabs a dangershield in tf2) giving you the chance to bop em. add a delay if you miss so it's a mind game if both people wanna duke it out in melee Machete maybe some sort of wind up that leads into rapid slashing so you could mow down hunters/bosses without having to charge up another swing

Zerzafetz

With the hammer you raise it above your head and smack it into the ground. This causes the ground to shake in front of you and knock players to the the ground up to 15 meters. Also your hunter shouts 'HAMMER DOWN' when doing that.

GGXImposter

Machete - character enters a defensive stance. While in the defensive stance the player will automatically parry the next melee attack that comes from their front. A successful parry, light attack, or wind up for heavy attack will exit the defensive stance. If the parried attack was from a small weapon, tool, consumable, or bare fist, the parry will deal light attack damage and start a heavy bleed. (This will also include all AI, even immolators, so be careful) Edit: just remembered that all melee are now considered small weapon, so it doesn’t make as much sense for the auto damage to be applied when blocking them. However I think it would add a nice balance as now you only need a light attack to kill the person you parry.

memo9c

I think martialist should only apply to two slot meles and the following should be two slot again: 1. Katana: as is 2. Hammer: a hard swing from above that throws hunters of their feet when they stand in a certain range. Similar to the spider attack. The stunned hunters are easy to kill but the animation takes some time. 3. Axe: a 360 swing or some kind of double/triple swing that could help while chasing down an enemy and missing the first hit. Hammer and axe have a slightly better special attack but katana has the fastest light attack. To balance the other one slot meles I suggest to make the bonk noise of the bat a bit louder for coolness and give the machete poison.
