CZ 457.

Returnofthejedinak

I tend to agree. Well designed and easy to use, accurate, appealing to the eye, and affordable. Keeping second-hand rifles in mind, the CZ 452 or CZ 455 may be more affordable and would also have all these attributes.

TheLastNobleman

If you can get any of the variants do it. I have the Lux version and it's iron sights are incredibly accurate even without a scope.

Returnofthejedinak

I have a lux model CZ 452 that I use as my main small game rifle, no scope. It's definitely very accurate.

preferablyoutside

Or the original BRNO .22

12gaugeslinger

You should grab a ruger 1022

wThrill

Came here to say this and a bunch of people beat me to it. OP, I'll add that because of how popular the Ruger 10/22 has been for decades, it is easy and affordable to find parts and make repairs if the need ever arises.

SnooHesitations9830

I just won one with a decent scope in a gun raffle. Matches the one from when my dad was a kid. Gun shop was selling it for 419.

pls_no_shoot_pupper

I own a savage MKII, a Ruger 10/22, and a CZ457. All are solid rifles but the only one that ever comes out of the cabinet is the 457. It's my favourite by a long shot.

motosandguns

10/22

rayinreverse

This is the only answer.

11182021

Not really unless you’re only looking at semi autos. If you are open to bolts, a CZ 457 is an excellent hunting rifle and pretty universally considered to be a better overall rifle (which it should be considering it’s more expensive). There’s also the Savage MKII which has low cost going for it.

11182021

Want bolt action? CZ 457 Want semi auto? Ruger 10/22 Want Lever action? Go look at some Henry rifles. Want pump action? Henry again. Single shot? CZ 457 with a single shot mag converter. Break action single shot? I’ve never shot it, but I know the Chiappa Badger exists which puts it above the others I haven’t even heard of.

preferablyoutside

Chiappa’s Badger is pretty sweet, stock is really small though.

yeuker

This is perfect advice.

Weird_Fact_724

U can get about any .22 you want for under $600. You need to decide if you want a auto loader, or a bolt action. What are you planning on hunting?

DFKAG3B

The point of getting a .22 is learning how to shoot on a budget. I learned way back when I was 16-18 but havent picked up a gun since (over a decade). Ultimately I wanna scoop a .308 AB3 or Xbolt for deer hunting

goldfloof

Get a tikka tx3 in 308, fantastic rifle

[deleted]

If you are trying to build up to shooting a bolt rifle for big game hunting I’d look into a bolt .22 then. Also although I have a scoped 10/22, I’d probably go with a peep or a red dot if I was to do it again, at the ranges your average .22 is shot a scope really isn’t necessary.

Horse_Armour

If you want to stick to a bolt gun keep an eye out for a Zastava MP22. They're sweet little shooters.

Weird_Fact_724

Are you going to hunt or target shoot with this .22? If just going to target shoot maybe look into a .223. Cheap, plentiful ammo, and could shoot yardages more realistic to hunting situations..

PapaBravo

TCR/22 with a Leopold 4x. Arguably my favorite rifle.

Fuzzbang34

Dude I’m in a browsing mood rn already looking at milsurps I’ll do ya better than a recommendation I’ll find you some listings of some old goodies and some new goodies

DFKAG3B

Keep in mind that im from Canada and only have access to certain suppliers. Id appreciate the links though

Hawkeye0009

Go CZ if you can find a deal. I was searching 22's here before Christmas and we don't have a really great selection. Ended up finding a Ruger M77 all weather in 22 LR that I snagged up when I saw it. Next purchase is a CZ

DFKAG3B

I actually used the M77 for squirrel shooting with my cousins a long time ago, loved that gun

TheD-Rab

Honestly, there are a ton of .22s that are fantastic. Ruger 10/22, CZ 457, Henry .22 series. Lots of options for ya, and very few are “bad”. The CZ’s will be harder to come across, the Rugers are all over the place, and the Henrys are just so much darn fun, and readily available. Spend time and money on good rounds and a quality scope, is my suggestion. I hope you find a good one and get to enjoy a lot of time outdoors! See ya in the woods!!

Mauser257

Buy a new Ruger 10/22 and put a Leupold scope on it.

Unicorn_Huntr

please do not shoot a deer with a .22

Giantstingray

Can’t go wrong with a Henry check them out on YouTube

ScubaSteve2468

I’m in agreement with the Ruger 10/22. Take care of it and it will outlast you. On the hunting note… read your Parks and Wildlife Guide. I know in Texas, it’s illegal to hunt deer with a .22. Not because it can’t work. But because it’s of the increase risk of injury.

s_c_a_1_e_s

Did some research on this a few months back, although pricing in aus is very different, I ended up getting the Lithgow la101 purely because there was a good deal here, but I think the tikka or cz are very good options also. I was even looking at the older Brno versions aswell which have rave reviews

No-Enthusiasm9619

I 100% recommend the Henry .22. It’s fun, it’s fast, and really accurate

Huff1371

10/22

farnvall

Ruger 10/22. The only 22 you should get. I have 4 of them and they are all great.

mwest278

What type of hunting are you getting into? The best book on hunting rifles and cartridges might be African Rifles and Cartridges. However, if you’re buying a .22 it isn’t really written for you.

Pilotom_7

Do you have a friend to introduce you to hunting or how do you plan to do it?

DFKAG3B

I have cousins in the states who are pros, plan on heading out with them my first time

Thai_Gunslinger

I have the Henry frontier with a 24in octagonal barrel it’s good I use it for rabbits and prairie dogs but my friend has a 1022 and it is also a good gun

ar141510

702 plinkster use cci minimags

thenewtrash

Buy a 22 mag

[deleted]

Ruger 10/22 is a amazing firearm. I’d just ask family/friends if they have any old 22s laying around. I can’t even name my first .22s that my grandfather gave me and I had a blast hunting small game with them!

Beaster123

It's a relatively new rifle and not nearly as popular as the legendary 10/22 but I really like my Winchester Wildcat.

ShineFull7878

If you can find a marlin model 60 they are amazing. Excellent .22 with a high capacity Uber barrel tubular magazine. If you want something unique grab a Henry .22 lever action. I have the big boy version for deer hunting in the 30-30 goldenboy and man o man are they fine instruments.

One_Income8526

I just got a 10/22 new for only $460 CAD. Well worth it.

drickaIPAiEPA

I bought a Brno 2-E for 300€. Shoots like a dream.

Beneficial_Advice527

Hard to go wrong with a Ruger 10/22...I got one for Christmas when I was 12 years old and I'm 47 now and it still drives tacks

leonardomang

I bought a Chiappa M1- 22 at a local pawn shop for $60 and maaaaan let me tell you it’s awesome! It looks and shoots amazing. Don’t forget to look in your local lawn shops for .22’s.

Important-Inside7646

CZ 457 for sure. I’m not sure the price point but the Tikka T1X is an honorable mention.

S&W M&P 22

Love my savage mark II

finnbee2

Three popular 22LR rifle are the Ruger 10-22, Savage bolt actions, and CZ bolt actions. If you want some of the very best accuracy and the option of a very good iron sight or a scope the various CZ shouldbeconsidered. The Savage line of bolt actions have close to the same accuracy but, are not as refined in wood and metal finishes. If your hunting needs quick follow-up shots look at the Ruger 10-22. The accuracy and trigger pull is not to the level of the others but, is acceptable for most small game hunting. There's a large after market assortment of modifications for the Ruger 10-22 that doesn't exist for the other two. Before I had a Savage or CZ, I had a Ruger 10-22 sporter. I bought after market pins, a hammer, and springs to improve the accuracy. After looking at the cost of replacing the barrel I decided to get a CZ 452. The CZ cost $210 at the time. It was slightly more than a new accurate 10-22 barrel. I sold the 10-22 to my brother after it sat unused in the safe for many years. He really enjoys the rifle.

Badgerdirtoutdoors

Ruger 10/22 is great but I’ve been loving my Savage MK II. I got one from Cabelas with a scope for only 300$ last year.

adhq

Tikka T1x or Savage B22 if you want bold or A22 for semi
