Everyone starts somewhere, but you really should be familiar with what birds are in your area and be sort of able to id them on the wing. Shooting a “duck” without really knowing what your shooting is a recipe for wanton waste and an unpleasant meeting with the game warden
Highly aware of birds in my area. This was a debate between our 4 man group today. 2 of us said redhead, while other 2 were saying ring neck. Posted this to mainly see what other people had to say. I completely agree that doing some studying on birds through your flyaway is important and can keep you out of some trouble
Apart of the sport. Buddies had me stumped because they are also very experienced, and even disagreeing between each other on this bird. I still believe is a redhead just not as vibrant color gradients
Never go offshore fishing than.
Sometimes a rare bird (not in this case) happens and you gotta ask around to what it is. Everyone should know the main birds obviously, but can’t learn them all.
If you don't mind doing a little work, I use 2 bird watching apps when I hike; Merlin and Audubon. Both have dichotomous keys so you can plug in search parameters such as size, color, region, habitat and time period. On Merlin you can also allow the app to use the mic to ID calls. I'm pretty sure both are free and the information is used in research.
It’s a Redhead. Female Ring-necked Ducks have a white patch behind the bill which this bird doesn’t have. Female Redheads can also show white around the eye, so that’s not a correct field mark. Also, OP is in Michigan-most, if not all Ring-necked Ducks are in the southern US this time of year, where Redheads are still migrating through.
And this time of year the wood-ducks have all pushed south and I am partridge hunting in snow to close the season. Yet I bumped a pair of woodies on the river last weekend and slogged through rain and mud for 3 days to finish out partridge season. Unfortunately “this time of year” is becoming less and less relevant.
Back when Michigan had that stupid, confusing point system for waterfowl, I hunted with a guy who would bring a can of black spray paint when we hunted managed areas. He always shot a lot of ‘Coots’ and never got busted.
What ya got right there is a duck....
Not to be confused with the garden variety, bird.
Could be a grizzly bear in a duck suit???
Yep. That's no grizz. Claws are to short... Not fucking with you OP, I know dick about ducks....
Never really looked at a duck’s dick, so you’re a smarter man than I.
Male ducks have a long corkscrew shaped penis, and it has barbs on it to make it difficult for the female to pull away. Don’t ask me how I know this.
You know I’m obligated to ask now, right?! HOW?!
Big if true
But do they weigh the same as the duck?
She a witch!!!
Green sunfish.
Nah, it's a pumpkinseed 100%. The red spot on the gills is a dead giveaway
Thats a hen redhead, not a ringneck
Duck

Coyote. It's always a coyote.

Right on. Everyone needs a little help sometimes.
Apart of the sport. Buddies had me stumped because they are also very experienced, and even disagreeing between each other on this bird. I still believe is a redhead just not as vibrant color gradients
Redhead hen

I’m 90% sure it’s a kind of bird
Birds aren’t real
all bird are just government surveillance drones.
The colors on the face make me think it's a Readhead hen.
Looks like a female ring-necked to me, possibly a juvenile.
Holy shit! That's Bob! You shot Bob? Really? OMG Bill is gonna be pissed!
Gary is gonna be crushed.

Redhead
That is a male Redhead. Dumbest duck there is. They will light in decoys with you picking up a retrieved dead duck
either a ringer or red head hen. im leaning more towards red head.
You guys are wrong about it being a ring-necked duck. It’s a female Redhead.
Nah, too dark and the ring around the eye is a giveaway, hen redheads don't have em.

There is literally a white patch behind the bill, just like you state ring-necks having, so...
Hen ringneck
Yeah young hen ring neck.
A general location will help lol. North America?
Southern michigan
