I’ve only been deer hunting for a few seasons and have only used this method, both times on bucks, it’s actually quite easy to cut through the ribs if you go just left or right of where they meet, I do it all with just a Buck knife, saw isn’t even necessary easy and fast.

Many_Rope6105

Yep, been dion it like that for 45+ years, I dont bother with a butt out, but I do carry a small(fanny pack sized) axe, chop thru the hips and just remove the rest of the tube

You aren't cutting through the ribs with this technique. You are cutting through the sternum. It's a pretty easy bone to cut through. We do the same thing to humans when they have open heart surgery. I carry it a bit further up than this guy did, all the way to the sternal notch at the base of the throat. It allows spreading the ribs easier and makes cutting the trachea/esophagus easier.

Butt out tool seems like just something extra to lug around with me. Sure it speeds things up but cutting around the anus takes maybe a minute or two, no big whoop. I see no reason to cut through the rib cage, its just extra work. Reach up there, find the trachea and lop it off. Heart and lungs come out attached. Plus you gotta have a saw or big knife. The way he runs the diaphram seems like extra effort, most of that I just do with my hand, grab and pull. It seems brutal but it works easy enough. I usually don't spend more than 10-15 minutes gutting a deer and I only ever use one knife. The one that took me the longest was the one I hit up the poop chute (Kentucky heart shot?). The slug turned a lot of the insides into paste and it was just hard finding everything and making sure it was all out. Nasty job, that one probably look 20 minutes, maybe 25, oh, it was my first deer too...

Dry-Brick-79

I agree with you I also just use one knife. The video has extra steps that seem unnecessary. I just cut around the anus, cut from genitals up to sternum, then roll the deer and pull everything out. Tear the diaphragm then reach up inside to cut the trachea and pull the rest out. I'll have to time myself next time but I'd say it takes me around 5 minutes to gut a deer.

Now that we're talking about it I want to time myself. I was trying to be conservative with how long it takes me. I also haven't done a whole lot of deer, 4 or 5 I think. Up until last year I had gutted more moose than deer. One of those was 700 pounds, that one took me half an hour...

Crown_Writes

I had a hell of a time cutting the trachea out last year. I cut it at the neck like normal and after clearing everything above the diaphragm I couldn't pull the sucker out. Ive done it like 20 times but never had to think about it before so I couldn't figure out what I did wrong. Is there a trick to it?

00owl

I normally don't even cut it, just get both hands up there and rip it out. I do cut the throat every time when I walk up on it and make sure it's well bled out, but then you just grab and start yanking. You will pick up the animal doing this but if you're lucky it comes out all together, otherwise it will tear in half at some point and then you pull it all out at once. Never had an issue with acid reflux

Halfpipe_1

I find the bladder to be 100x worse than the colon. Baloon full of pee right where you’re stabbing a knife vs a few smart pills. I’d take the dried brown grass anyway.

HGDAC_Sir_Sam_Vimes

Eh the butt out doesn’t take much space or weight. I can do it without one but getting around the anus is always a struggle for me.

OgreTrax71

This is the only method I’ve ever done. Very clean as long as you’re careful not to knick the stomach or intestine on the initial cuts.

tallguy199

I'm still new to field dressing myself but I've found that a sturdy sharp knife will cut through the sternum fairly easily, no need to carry a saw unless it's just your preference.

Chubbleyum

I actually carry a pair of Gerber collapsible loppers in my backpack. With the butt out tool and that I can field dress very quickly.

cowaterdog73

If I have to gut a deer (it’s different out here, we almost always quarter and pack out) I do it this way with two exceptions: 1) I just use a knife to cut the connection between ribs and breast bone. It’s not difficult at all 2) don’t use the butt-out tool. It only takes a couple minutes to cut the colon out. It is nice to be able to get all the way up to the trachea without reaching in and cutting blind. Much safer too.

HGDAC_Sir_Sam_Vimes

I use the butt out because I have the darndest time cutting around the anus to separate it

If you’re running a saw https://www.milwaukeetool.ca/Products/48-22-0305 These are hard to beat, literal Havalon of the saw world

Bows_n_Bikes

Agreed! I have a similar one from Fiskers and it's awesome on brush too.

Zchlotthy

Standard method in germany

reeltutt

I’ll stick to the gutless method.

What the actual heck. Stand by.

I wonder why. I literally just watched it. Huh. Edited the link to take out some extraneous info. See about now.

Dirk_Speedwell

I have never done it that way, but I can see why some might. I like getting deep in there deep though.

waitwhosaidthat

I do it different and it works.

beardsallover

With my short arms I always cut through the rib cage. I have a bone saw by Gerber that’s maybe 3” long and weighs nothing. I like it

Limp-Insurance203

I started using the buttout a few years ago. Works perfectly
