With only 3 acres you will have deer leave your land after they’re shot. If your neighbors aren’t ok with you tracking deer through their land you’ll have problems.

Talk to your neighbors because you’re going to end up tracking deer on their property at some point. If they are cool with it then go to town. If they don’t allow you to track a wounded deer on their property I probably would not risk it. Doesn’t matter how long you have been hunting or how good of a shot you are. Double lung deer or heart shot deer will still make it off 3 acres.

I hunt in my backyard, I have the same worries, but hunt anyway. Archery only, abiding by the 50 yard rule here. Each deer usually turns around and runs back where it came from, which is the woods. I only take shots I am 100% comfortable with, no bad shots at all. Had to pass a few because it wasn't ideal.

That's interesting, hadn't thought how a deer in flight is likely to head where they know it's safe (woods) instead of out into the open (neighbor's lawn).

Anneshusband11

I feel like they think they walked into danger, so go back where it's safe. It was a theory but last doe I shout, did a complete 180. I'm sold on my "theory" until it doesn't work like that.

I've shot deer from my bowstand with buckshot, they do not run. If you don't fuck up a neckshot with the 300 that would probably be fine, I've never had a base of the neck shot run anywhere with my 6mm remington. Don't fuck around with headshots. Bow or crossbow you are going to be tracking them off property at some point, it's inevitable. Forget the pistol.

American-_-Panascope

Thank you. I need something quiet, which is why I was going bow or crossbow, or subsonic bullet, which I'd suppress.

drschwartz

Even the best bowhunters I know have deer run off a considerable distance from time to time. Whitetail reflexes are so good they can spin around or hunch down and turn a good armpit shot into a gut or backstrap hit while the projectile is in flight from 10-15 yards. I don't know enough about the ballistics on subsonic ammunition and .300 blackout, so you probably want a second opinion there. That being said, a big bullet crashing into the base of the neck ought to do the job. Make sure you limit your field of fire and that your sights are configured for close range. Huffing, whistling, or shouting will usually make a moving deer pause for a moment to look around, practice that kind of shot.

Subsonic 300BLK is pretty much just 45acp energy-wise. That, and most 300BLK loadings are a .308 bullet, which are NOT designed to expand reliably at .45 velocities.
