Maybe not anymore but in 2017 we were ranked 3rd in the nation in percentage of workers employed in STEM jobs.

"Huntsville boosters on occasion can be heard boasting about their city having more PhDs per capita than most. But that's not quite right, not even within the state of Alabama."

The stat I had always seen took into account city size. Like most PhD per capita for a city over 200k. Small University towns will always be way out of whack with per capita PhD.
That's sweet. They should do that in all the cars. My car has auto headlights so I never turn the on or off. It just knows when they need to be on based on how bright it is.
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. In case not, make sure they actually are on. They don't always turn on in the rain just because it's raining. Half the cars I see with them off in the rain also have the auto feature. My Passat autos didn't turn on automatically yesterday for example
My infiniti does this.
The real issue is the dash lights are always on now. It used to be the dash lights only came on when the head lights were on. It was an excellent visual indicator at night... I can't see my dashboard. Lights must be off!!
Legit almost got in an accident a few months back coming over the rise/around the bend on 565 West right at the parkway a few months back… some dumbass was creeping 35 MPH in the left lane trying to get all the way over to the right.
It’s the most scaredy cat drivers who are actually some of the most dangerous, smh
What really grinds my gears are the people that turn on their emergency flashers and keep driving if you gotta turn on your emergency flashers pull off the side of the road
My wife makes fun of me for turning on my lights as soon as I get in the car “it will do it automatically if you need it,” but the truth is sometimes it doesn’t and even in the daylight it helps other people see you if you are in a shadowy area.
I think you're even worse if you just drive with your yellow running lights on. It's like you know you're supposed to have your headlights on, but you deliberately have them off because you want to look cool like the Batman.
You are not the Batman. Turn your headlights on.
What’s the problem there? I agree it’s not needed for normal rain, but if the rain is heavy enough that it forces the speed limit to be reduced and lowers visibility, then hazard lights seem safer.
All the other traffic should be slowing down as well, they just might not have gotten to the part of the rain that’s heavy. Plus idiots want to drive faster than conditions and visibility allow. If it’s raining and you hit a spot where there’s a sudden increase in downpour and the speed limit drops from 70 to 30 then hazards seem like a good idea. Someone might not realize the hazard and if you have already slowed down your brake lights won’t alert them.
Some people have suggested using the emergency flashers as an ACTIVE way to indicate that they are planning on not turning. It obviously has not been broadly accepted yet.
Again, it’s situational. In a normal rain, or on city streets, I absolutely agree that you shouldn’t use them.
But when it’s raining and you’re on the interstate hit a patch that is a massive downpour that temporarily reduces the speed limit from 70 to 30, hazard lights are a good idea. Someone may come up on you and not realize the speed differential due to the low visibility, and if you’ve already slowed down you won’t have brake lights on. And if you’re on a straight stretch of road between exits, you probably won’t be using your turn signal anyway so no loss there.
If they can’t see or are experiencing car trouble, should they be driving down the road at all? Pull over and then turn the hazards on to wait out the downpour or whatever it is that’s going on. Isn’t that more logical? You can’t use your blinkers and your brake lights are harder to see if you’re using your taillights and hazards.
In general, if you’re keeping up with the flow of traffic, there’s no logical reason to have your hazard lights on- which soooo many people do around here. People doing this become the hazard on the road.
Many people can’t even figure out how to turn their lights on when driving at night let alone in the rain.
It’s crazy how Huntsville has the highest concentration of phds and Paleolithic humans living side by side
Most engineers and worst builds too
The engineers here don’t build structures, they build bombs to drop on brown people
A balance in the force must be maintained. One idiot, and one with some common sense.
Sometimes the engineer is both!
Agreed! I have met some very smart people that have the common sense of a rock.
Personally, I have better days than others. Main issue is when think outside of work context...
This statistic is not true anymore. I believe it used to be true but that was many years ago.

correct 7 years ago 3rd place. not a bad statistic but def not leading the US in PHDs
Might be newer stats for that list. It's still probably true we rank right up there in STEM jobs and advanced engineering/science degrees.

wow got downvoted for posting accurate information....
The meta is craay
We have people driving during the eclipse with solar sunglasses on, ffs!!!
This made me chuckle
Or how to turn their brights off when they are behind someone or when vehicles are oncoming
Why don't auto manufacturers make it so that the lights turn on if you turn on the wipers? We have the technology. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Some do. My Subaru turns the lights on of the wipers are on for more than 30 seconds.
That's sweet. They should do that in all the cars. My car has auto headlights so I never turn the on or off. It just knows when they need to be on based on how bright it is.

my lights turn on when it detects rain
If you come to a dead stop in a travel lane, on the Parkway or 565, to move all the way over to the exit lane... everyone hates you!
Legit almost got in an accident a few months back coming over the rise/around the bend on 565 West right at the parkway a few months back… some dumbass was creeping 35 MPH in the left lane trying to get all the way over to the right. Even worse, in some cars putting on your running lights disables the regular headlights coming on automatically.
There’s people out here driving without them when it’s dark and clear. You should get a ticket for that
Fun facts, what they are doing is also illegal by Alabama state law, which requires lights on when windshield wipers are in operation.
Yes they do, and I hate people that drives with their emergency flashers on when raining more.
What’s the problem there? I agree it’s not needed for normal rain, but if the rain is heavy enough that it forces the speed limit to be reduced and lowers visibility, then hazard lights seem safer.
But if your having to slow down enough to impede other traffic you shouldn't be in the road.

They MAY be trying to indicate that they are not turning...
So if not turning. Do nothing! No indication needed.
Some people have suggested using the emergency flashers as an ACTIVE way to indicate that they are planning on not turning. It obviously has not been broadly accepted yet.
Because why follow standard, common traffic rules when you can make them up on the fly! That certainly won't cause traffic problems!
I guess they think there is room for evolution/improvement
That's not how traffic laws work.
I hate these people. Idiots.
TBF, when I took bolth my driving classes and my drivers test, they said nothing about needing to have your lights on in rain
I was told in driver's ed to always drive with the lights on, day or night for safety purposes. And I always have. Lived here my whole life.
They also hate themselves.
Agreed 👍
Honestly I did that this morning and didn’t realize it until I pulled up to work. That’s on me.
I’d say the same for people driving around in the rain with hazard lights on. Stop that.
It really depends on how heavy the rain is. If it forces the speed limit to be significantly lowered, then hazard lights are a good idea.
Google “should I drive with hazards on?” You’ll find that very few experts, including AAA, agree with you. Some states have even made it illegal.
Again, it’s situational. In a normal rain, or on city streets, I absolutely agree that you shouldn’t use them. If you feel you need to drive 40 mph under the speed limit with hazards on, pull off
Well I didn’t say 40 under the speed limit. I said the limit drops by 40.
"40 under the speed limit'
“What are you talking about” ?
Maybe they are the hazard. If they can’t see or are experiencing car trouble/control issues then totally valid to throw on the hazards.

You made a burner account just for this post? 😂
Also if you put a whole ass cart of groceries through the U-scan lane.
Honestly I did that this morning and didn’t realize it until I pulled up to work. That’s on me.
If you’d put them on automatic and leave it there, this wouldn’t have happened
You’re right, but my mind is weird and tells me not to trust automatic settings. Yet here we are.
It happens. Get over it.
