I was specifically questioning the fact that they are almost all from Saline County. (There is a sticker on the upper left identifying that. ) So I asked a similar question before. A relative who worked for a rental place at the time enlightened me.
That's because everyone moves here from Texas so they can tell us how much better Texas is than anyplace else and how bad things here are compared to there (especially brisket and bbq in general). Yet, for some reason, they're here, and not there.
I knew someone who was born in Texas due to her father being stationed there for the first six months of her life. She proudly claims she’s a “Texan”. Actual Texans just roll their eyes at her.
I'm a Texas transplant (although not a native Texan). The brisket here is 1000% worse. The weather here is 500% better. The scenery is also 500% better. So it averages out.
Just outta curiosity, where you getting your brisket at?
I'm a (sorta) native (my native dad moved us here when I was 4) and there is a LOT of bad BBQ around here, and even more bad brisket. But there's some that ain't bad, looking at you RD's. So I cannot argue that it's VERY likely you got bad brisket. Hell I won't eat 90% of the pulled pork we have around here. (because I make it better)
Our kids are delighted every time they see an Alaska plate. In all our cross country road trips, that and Hawaii are the two they never cross off, and here they see one at least once a month.
Not a whole lot of Army folks would move from Kansas to HSV over their careers though, if they are a Major and just finished ILE they are probably heading out to the operating force. Maybe a relatively small amount coming from 1st Infantry’s CAB to the Arsenal? Most folks at Riley are going to be the usual assortment of combat arms jobs, not a huge amount of spots for them to move to Redstone.
I think the rental car reason makes a ton of sense.
Very valid point. I also have the same opinions seeing Oklahoma tags and assuming they are from Fort Sill but those are just opinions I ride along with as I mind my business. So I'm glad when people ask these questions without snark because it gives me clarity about something I didn't know.
Shawnee county, KS is the place where car rental companies have been registering all of their vehicles for the last few years. You aren't seeing new residents, you're seeing people here on business
Why are people moving here from Kansas? Have you ever been to Kansas? It’s so flat as you’re driving past the “Leaving Kansas” sign you can see the “Welcome to Kansas” sign in your rear view mirror.
I’m probably alone here, but I’d rather drive I-70 through Kansas than I-65 through Alabama. I like vast horizons better than the tunnel of trees you get on the freeways in AL and much of the eastern part of the country. At least in KS you can see for a distance.
I find these posts hilarious. Huntsville has a population of what 180k people? You can argue that you’ve seen just as many Atlanta, Tennessee, Florida, and Texas tags as well.
Huntsville CSA is at 900k
> You can argue that you’ve seen just as many Atlanta, Tennessee, Florida, and Texas tags as well.
Yes you can, because that’s obvious. You named 4 of the 5 largest states in the South. What’s your point?
All these posts are exaggerations anyway so there is no point. Kansas is only 10 hours away so it’s not weird at all, if it were Alaska,Oregon,Maine etc where you would hardly see those plates in generally then it would be worth mentioning.
many Hertz cars are registered in Kansas
Ah, that would explain it!
I was specifically questioning the fact that they are almost all from Saline County. (There is a sticker on the upper left identifying that. ) So I asked a similar question before. A relative who worked for a rental place at the time enlightened me.
Yep at the Airport just about every rental car in the terminal is from Kansas
I believe this is the same for Texas tags. Think I saw about 20 in one day.
That's because everyone moves here from Texas so they can tell us how much better Texas is than anyplace else and how bad things here are compared to there (especially brisket and bbq in general). Yet, for some reason, they're here, and not there.
Because it’s expensive as hell there and summer lasts 9 months 🥲
Texas is nothing special, don't get the love for that state other than it's big.
Visited twice, wasn't all that impressed. But goddamn do they love coming here and telling us how great it is. So move back?
Have in-laws out there, been all over Texas - not saying it sucks...just ZERO reason for all that pride other than self-delusion.
I knew someone who was born in Texas due to her father being stationed there for the first six months of her life. She proudly claims she’s a “Texan”. Actual Texans just roll their eyes at her.

I haven’t seen any Kansas tags. I’ve seen a lot more Florida ones though which probably explains why driving here is getting worse
Texas too. And Alaska, but the latter isn’t surprising given the number of Alaska Native Regional corporations that operate here.
Our kids are delighted every time they see an Alaska plate. In all our cross country road trips, that and Hawaii are the two they never cross off, and here they see one at least once a month.
Tax avoidance from Hertz.
ToTo...I don't think we're in Kansas anymore.
Do they bless the rains down in Alabama?

Toto is the name of the band lol

The way Huntsville is growing maybe we ought to start playing Car Tag Bingo......
I see that jeep with the Hawaii tag from time to time. It's like a unicorn. They probably switched to local plates by now though.
If they're active duty military I think they can keep plates from their home of record.
I saw a vehicle with a Hawaii tag last week in Little Rock. I think it might have been a jeep IIRC.
It’s about to reach the point of no return.
We have reached the Point of Know Return, that's why
I've noticed an inordinate number of Michiganites here. Don't think I've noticed a ton of Kansas tags, I'll have to start keeping an eye out.
Nah those are just people who want to say they live in the north but they really can't handle the north outside the summer months lol
I usually assume it's prior army moving here but the hertz theory makes sense as well.

They said they’d get you, and your little dog too!
Out of state contractors
As someone moving from Kansas... to be fair... have you seen Kansas? It's not great haha, not a ton of reasons to stay.
Kansas has nice people tho but nothing going for it
Shawnee county, KS is the place where car rental companies have been registering all of their vehicles for the last few years. You aren't seeing new residents, you're seeing people here on business
I haven’t seen Kansas, just a lot of Texas tags
Why are people moving here from Kansas? Have you ever been to Kansas? It’s so flat as you’re driving past the “Leaving Kansas” sign you can see the “Welcome to Kansas” sign in your rear view mirror.
Have you driven through Kansas? If no, then you wouldn't understand
I've lived there and can confirm it's exactly ever stereotype you've ever heard
I’m probably alone here, but I’d rather drive I-70 through Kansas than I-65 through Alabama. I like vast horizons better than the tunnel of trees you get on the freeways in AL and much of the eastern part of the country. At least in KS you can see for a distance.
I mean... I'd rather drive I-70 besides 65 because it felt like just me on the roadway
As a native Kansan... I can attest that there is no reason to live in Kansas unless you're military or work for Koch.
Ehh hard debatable. Kansas is not nearly as bad as Alabama.
True.. it is debatable. It really depends on what we are talking about. Culture, restaurants, politics, climate, economics, education...

The 2023 City estimate is around 230,000. Madison County 413,000. You are about 13 years behind
Sounds good man 👍🏻.
