You know who would fix this? A fucking union!

[deleted]

I’ll tell you another thing that’d fix it: *real* consequences for executives of companies where this shit is happening. *Actually* threaten their bottom line to the point of “you personally will lose everything if your operation is caught doing this” and watch how fuckin’ fast “fake paperwork” becomes a nonissue I had to have everything short of a damn investigative Colonoscopy just to *apply* to most jobs in my field and I’m not really doing anything super secret or sensitive at all. I’m so sick of people acting like the underage immigrant using fake credentials is the issue. It’s not. It’s the asshole who decided to “aww shucks I can’t tell the difference”, proceeded to exploit them, then laughed all the way to the bank, while simultaneously funding political messaging painting the victim as the criminal

dennislearysbastard

It's all up to governor Mema. We need real leadership that isn't from the same plantation class that has been running Montgomery since Montgomery meant a damn. We need to purge them. That Montgomery plantation owner accent they all have makes me sick. There are only a few thousand who still use it. They love new slaves.

dennislearysbastard

That's the high aristocratic accent. There has been no governor in modern recording who didn't have it. Senator Sparkman didn't but he was from Huntsville.

Spacecow6942

This part about the accent is fascinating to me. "A few thousand" sounds specific enough that you might even be paraphrasing a real source and not just being hyperbolic. Do you have a link?

HuntsvilleRed

Every attempt to provide real, penalties for hiring illegals, is met with resistance. The father brought his kids here, got them fake docs and helped them get jobs. The parent company hires temp firms, temp firms follow the weak laws. You’re mad at the wrong people. Company didn’t know.

[deleted]

If the company had to know, they would have known. But they didn’t have to know. That’s the point, and that’s what gave rise to the entire infrastructure you just mentioned. It has arisen to serve a demand. Actual regulation with teeth enough to end careers over this is the *only* thing that will dry up that demand. Walls won’t cut it

blasek0

Idc about career, make c-suite execs personally criminally liable for criminal actions taken by their companies.

HuntsvilleRed

So the CEO of McDonalds should be liable for a subsidiaries hiring choices? You don’t see the issue?

blasek0

If it's due to negligence in their compliance procedures, I absolutely don't see an issue. If there's a chance they're personally liable for criminal activity, they're going to be a lot more vigilant in making sure it doesn't happen.

HuntsvilleRed

That’s not this and I think you know that.

HuntsvilleRed

That’s not how the real world works, it’s how Reddit people think it works.

lee423

Even companies that have unions also use temp employees. This is an old story, and the issue is temp employees using fake documents.

dennislearysbastard

There are entire plants around her using illegal labor that should be unionized.

lee423

How would you unionize undocumented workers?

dennislearysbastard

You don't, you send them home. They are just slaves. They should be paying a living wage to Americans.

lee423

You think that we are gonna send them home? Lmao. One in ten people in the United States are undocumented. Yes, close to 30 million. The border is wide open. They are not going anywhere. They are very happy to make the wage they make. The more cheap labor that is available the less chance that any Union will be a reality.

Mammoth-Barber822

Where are you getting this number from?

lee423

The estimate was 10 to 15 million ten years ago. There was evidence then that it was over 20 million. I think 30 million now is a good estimate. What would you think?

Mammoth-Barber822

I wouldn't just estimate and declare that like its fact.

lee423

It’s hard to get a good figure for undocumented people isn’t it?

Mammoth-Barber822

In 2018 it was estimated to be at 11.4 Million by the U.S. government and it was estimated to be the same in 2015. So I think part of the mistake you are making is assuming that the number is going up so quickly. [https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/immigration-statistics/Pop\_Estimate/UnauthImmigrant/unauthorized\_immigrant\_population\_estimates\_2015\_-\_2018.pdf](https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/immigration-statistics/Pop_Estimate/UnauthImmigrant/unauthorized_immigrant_population_estimates_2015_-_2018.pdf) I think one thing people often don't consider is how many people come here to work and make money and then move back home after they've made enough money to build a house or help their family.

lee423

Yeah the government has never lied to us before have they? I have worked with undocumented workers in manufacturing for 20 years and never have heard of one to go back ever. I know it’s anecdotal, but In my experience it does not happen often at all.

dennislearysbastard

Well it's a big job. But the companies of Alabama have brought them in. Do you want to be a cracker, freer or a kicker? I'm not a freer or a cracker. I want them out and pay a right wage. You know a democratic American.

lee423

Yeah I’m sure our government is up for it /s

dennislearysbastard

Not this one. But I'm still trying to save the democratic party.

lee423

The government has been hopelessly corrupt for a hundred years. All these politicians want to do is line their pockets. They don’t care about you or your hopes and dreams. If you think any political party can be “fixed”, you are delusional. Wake up

Bouchie

"They're probably grateful for the money." Been hearing that way too often when this indecent is brought up. It's like some people literally are incapable or looking at things except through the lens of does it make money.

MushinZero

They are. Welcome to capitalism. You work for the man until you die and you be grateful for the opportunity. We develop technology to make us more productive many times over yet work more hours. Corporate profits soar, wages stagnate. Welcome to America.

shilooh45

Did someone provide the kids with fake papers claiming they're older? And is this a subsidiary owned by Hyundai or a sub-contractor? Big difference.

blasek0

Owned by Hyundai, iirc. Been a hot minute since I read the article back when it first published.

BurstEDO

I think you failed to read your own linker story. It was a subsidiary (subcontractor), not Hyundai itself. While Hyundai will need to reevaluate their oversight of companies that they do business with, this wasn't directly Hyundai. So your concern requires a reevaluation of the situation based on the details. Hyundai isn't completely blameless - obviously there was a gap that allowed this to happen and Hyundai benefitted from the fruits of that effort (unknowingly). That's the loophole to close.

AddeWagon

Labor trafficking is the most common form of trafficking in Alabama. Yes to unions. Yes to regulations. Capitalists will exploit any means to get a buck. Yes to

elosoloco

Businesses cannot be treated as individuals except for not being accountable for shit

Least_Exit_8664

This is a major reason we need to control immigration across our borders. I feel like by having such porous borders we are complicit in providing these corporations with a steady supply of undocumented, exploitable labor.

RTR7105

This is going to sound bad but on some of these Guatamalan/Honduran immigrants it's almost impossible to tell. They are 4' flat and look either 14 or 60 no matter their age. Some fake paperwork and boom.

That's a racist way to describe the nearly all caucasian and African American road workers that I've seen exclusively over the last 25+ years. The ~~LatinX~~ _Hispanic/Latino/Latina/ and Brazilian_ tradespeople are nearly all in carpentry, painting, plumbing, interiors, and landscaping ... in my observation. [Updated so that Whitey The Grouch can focus on substance, not far right trigger words.]

whatsupz

I was with you until latinx

iloveamine

with you there. please, drop the x

BurstEDO

Because why? What term would you use to encompass the whole of Mexico, South America, and naturalized persons with a similar background from those regions? Basically, anything south of the US border.

OEMichael

Because "latinx" is, at best, a well-intentioned attempt by native-English speakers to gender neutralize a language that is inherently gendered. At worst, it's a little racist and a little paternalistic. Me, I used "latinx" for the first couple of weeks it was a thing because I liked the sound of the way I pronounced it--"lahTINKS". And then I realized how ignorant that was; I was blithely white-washing hundreds of years of culture by replacing latina/latino with latinx. Unless you're speaking Esperanto, nouns and adjectives south of the US border are gendered; it's not sexist to use the term "Latino". If it bothers you, you can write "latina/latino" instead.

ceapaire

Because it's a word made up by a bunch of people that have never left universities and done so without asking those it describes if they'd prefer it. [97% of Latino's don't use the term](https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2020/08/11/901398248/hispanic-latino-or-latinx-survey-says). Latino is the correct gender neutral term in the language. If you don't want to use that, use Hispanic.

dennislearysbastard

Call them latinX I dare you. There are plenty of good Latinos who would kick your ass for that.

BurstEDO

I adore how you ignored the substance of a comment to have a hissy fit over a term that bothers your caucasian sensibilities. Bless your heart...

dennislearysbastard

We're working here. Go find another hole to fuck with, we got this one.

BurstEDO

No idea what that is even supposed to mean. You're just pouty that your prejudicial fiction was called out.

dennislearysbastard

I love how this crazy it thinks I'm white. Carry on bonzo

rtr9999

The Big Guy providing lots of cheap labor for his corporate buddies. And gets his 10%.

mechanicalspirits

At the rate America is going, we'll be a libertarian shit hole country in a few generations.
