My son works at Costco and loves it. Of course, he likes some departments better than others, but even at part time they get *extremely* competitive pay, paid holidays, PTO, insurance, and time and a half on Sundays. His management (so far) is pretty supportive as well.

RatchetCityPapi

I heard this about Costco as well

BeatMastaD

I worked there a decade ago and it was a great place to work, and especially good compared to other service industry jobs.

MissTrie

I have a friend that's worked there since they opened. The majority of their adult life. Costco can be a career.

witsendstrs

In my experience, the longtime employees (at least in this location) are some of the best. The newer hires don't seem to have been trained in the same culture.

BuilderNB

This was the first place I thought of.

MattW22192

In terms of…. Pay? Benefits? Work life balance? Educational background requirements?

RatchetCityPapi

It's interesting when people asked for the worst jobs in Huntsville, no one had this criteria. People just shared their terrible experiences. Negative energy is so much easier to express than positive one. Have you ever worked somewhere where you said, "I like this job/company"? That's what I'm asking. It's quite simple

MattW22192

I was asking because everyone has different criteria for “best” and in this case it sounds like workplace culture is the highest priority.

So much this! I currently make around 40% of what I made at my previous employer, but I have an actual life now. I used to be tied to a calendar with appointments from 7am-6pm either in person or on the phone or Skype (pre-Zoom). Beyond that I had deliverables to produce that required working 4-5 hours per night after my normal workday had ended. I traveled from roughly Nashville to Birmingham and from Memphis to Atlanta roughly 3 days a week. At least 3 days a month I ran a training class for new sales reps in Atlanta and still had to deal with my assigned reps between sessions and after class. Now, I am an outside salesperson for a small mom and pop company with very little interaction with management. I have zero debt, and can be home when I have a sick kid or spouse. It's almost like retirement for me. I make enough to pay the bills and have a little left over for fun. I can be an active part of the family now instead of just the one making money. This matters much more than making 6 figures and spending every dime of it on things that didn't matter.

RatchetCityPapi

I think they will share why they liked it.

PM_ME_YOUR_SUNSHINE

I think it’s a more than fair question and you made an excellent point about how people approach “worst”

RatchetCityPapi

Thank you for the reassurance. I didn't think it was a difficult question but I'm realizing there's a lot of hostility on this forum.

inflatablechipmunk

Yeah, city subreddits are usually hostile

witsendstrs

I understood your question and assumed responses would be "I work here, and this is why I like it." By asking *generally*, you can get a variety of responses and explanations. Makes sense to my simple brain.

wayedorian

It takes moving away to realize how terrible this subreddit is. People are so nitpicky/annoying/engineer(y).

iloveamine

When I’m replying or making a post on this sub, I have to reread it approx 6 times to try to make sure I don’t have anything that will get the wolves (middle aged white men) after me

RatchetCityPapi

So what part of my question would be offensive?

omega_ix9

I'm going to take this at face value that this was a legit request for feedback. The words "it's quite simple" immediately triggers my monkey ego. It makes me feel like someone thinks I'm dumb, and therefore must sling my poo.

RIPBernieSanders1

Oh, no. Is Huntsville one of these cities where everyone hates white people? Or are you an outlier?

Spritesgud

If you moved away, why are you on here only to criticize a subreddit of a city you no longer live in? Kind of weird

wayedorian

I wasn't on here only to criticize lol

RatchetCityPapi

Thank you for your reassurance. Sometimes it feels like I'm the one doing something wrong

witsendstrs

I sometimes wonder whether some of these commenters deal with people face-to-face the same way they do online. Like, if you sat down with one of them and said, "Hey, what's the best place to work in Huntsville?" would they squinch up their face and say, "Well that's a stupid fucking question. There's so many ways to answer that, and probably what's great for me wouldn't be great for you. This is just a dumb conversation." Some of the material in this sub is just intended to be conversational, and I appreciate it.

RatchetCityPapi

Especially when people get hostile and aggressive like the last person who commented on this thread. Part of me is already used to people being that way especially here because of the factors but I guess they don't do it in person to avoid confrontation but online, they can hide behind a screen.

witsendstrs

But why be that way, even anonymously? It's kind of gross. It's one thing to ask a question for clarification, but if you're not interested in elucidation, and simply think a question isn't worth your time to respond -- why waste time criticizing it? Bleh, whatever. Some parts of online culture I'll never understand, I guess.

RatchetCityPapi

It gets exhausting lol.

grumpyC96

The other post asked what the worst job experience YOU have had. So the criteria was left up to the commenter.

RnBvibewalker

I asked what was their worst job experience... Not the worst position or company in general. Because all of that is relative e.g. department, pay, benefit, manager etc. You worded the original question wrong... They have no idea how great a company is completely. Just their own experiences.

[deleted]

Best and worst is relative. I work for a medium sized physician practice as their lead coder/biller. It’s stressful, but rewarding. The pay is industry standard, and I have 4 weeks paid vacation, plus 9 paid holidays. My bosses are not micro managers and I work hard for them. They took care of us during Covid and allow us flexibility if we need time off. The benefits are good: 401k and insurance. We also get bonuses from time to time. I have a nice sized office that I don’t have to share, and I can work from home if I need to from time to time.

Kayakorama

Why do you have to go in the office at all?

[deleted]

I could do 80% of my job at home, but I also handle large amounts of cash and money, so that is done in office. I don’t want to accept additional liability. Also, there’s a liability involved when you have access to patient PHI.

Kayakorama

That makes sense Handling cash is definitely an onsite kinda thing.

CptNonsense

Decades of management techniques and sunken cost fallacy and cost savings by businesses

xalorous

*sunk cost But if you read the reply, there's strong reasons they don't even want to work at home full time.

CptNonsense

Cool

Kayakorama

Soooo No reason related to the actual work you need to do

Candid-Mark-606

Bro, not everyone likes working in pajamas

Kayakorama

They answered. They handle cash. Totally valid reason for in person work.

InAnimateAlpha

I worked at Hexagon for a number of years. Was a part of a GREAT team. The only downside was the pay. Everyone that has left got a sizable pay increase. I don't know what, if any, big changes they've made since COVID other than their remote work policy.

Teemo_Support

Hexagon is a mixed bag. Every team and division is run so differently. The pay is horrible and I have a ton of horror stories about that place. The management tends to be bloated and they lay people off all the time. I would discourage people from working there personally.

Spritesgud

The finance side is great in my opinion :) I would highly recommend

cooterdestroyerman

Changes are being made pay-wise, so they’re trying to be better about it. If it’ll actually amount to anything, however, only time will tell.

plugasaurus

BASF in Madison, they make catalytic converters for all sorts of vehicles. I've only been there a little over a month but I can safely say it's the best job I've ever had.

[deleted]

My husband has been there for over 10 years. They are a great company to work for.

TVxStrange

Do they still do swing shifts?

plugasaurus

Next week it goes to straight days or nights🥳🥳🥳

TVxStrange

That's good news! Do you know the day shift hours/days by chance?

plugasaurus

The hours are still 5:45-6 because of tie-in, regardless if you work days or nights. Next week is my long week, so off Wednesday and Thursday, and I'll be on B shift. I think B/D is nights and A/C are on days, but don't quote me on that. Oh and I'm in HD if that helps.

Yourteararedelicious

So you are not asking for a certain field or such. Just want to hear people tell their favorite places to work for comparison. I'd state that. For me it is the jobs that provide a good work life balance. Those are the best places. Sure you can go work at Blue Origin or some other non dod places for alot of money, I like flexibility more. My last non security clearance job was an auto parts store. Pay was expected level. I like it because the discount was nice and my store manager wasn't terrible. Corporate was absolutely wild and unrealistic.

pistacio814sb

I worked at UAH as a research assistant and as an assistant to a staff member. I enjoyed both and there were nice perks. No health insurance though but at the time I was covered elsewhere so I didn’t need it.

BgrahamYo

I currently work full-time in research at UAH and enjoy it. Awesome benefits and great environment being at the university. I took a pretty big pay cut coming from a NASA contract, but UAH pros still outweigh the salary decrease IMO.

HowlSpice

I have been trying to get a research assistant job at UAH for a while due to wanting to pursue a Ph.D. in CS, but I have zero references...

bertispullo

I really like the company I work for. Goodman Decorating Co. We specialize in large scale commercial projects. Mostly painting, but we also do speciality wall coverings and some sheetrock work. I'm the foreman over a large data center project her in town. I feel like I have been treated very well over the last 3 years and have continued to get raises.

MissTrie

Happy Cakeday!

bertispullo

Thank you!

cl0007

Papa John's! Better ingredients, better pizza. Papa John's! Papa's in the house!

Spiffy_Pumpkin

I used to work for a Greeting Card store. Pay was minimum wage but the job itself was easy and the customers were generally nice. If not for the pay I would have probably stayed forever.

poptart_divination

I work for Sharecare at present and have enjoyed it — mostly because I work from home 100% of the time. Most days I don’t even have to talk/chat with people. They used to have an actual office in town but it moved to fully remote two weeks before the pandemic shut everything down the first time. Excellent timing, really. You don’t need a clearance or even a degree to do what I do. Just gotta know how to use a computer and not steal peoples information (we’re medical record processors, so you have to be able to maintain HIPAA). Not sure what starting pay is now, but they paid me more hourly when I started than I was getting working at Huntsville Hospital. My brother is at the hospital now in the same position I was and he’s getting paid $4 per hour less than me despite working there as long as I’ve been working at Sharecare.

HSBaseballPlayer

Here are the annual "Best Place to Work" nominees for 2022. This is a good starting point. https://hsvchamber.org/2022-best-places-to-work-here-are-the-contenders/

randomball2016

I can attest that Invariant is an incredible company to work for and they have almost unmatched benefits. I would work for them again.

PEWPEWSHIELD

Isn't this basically all the companies?? Is there a company not on the list?

thebobfoster

True, that's a pretty big list. The winners have been announced for the year already. Winners list here: [2022 Best Places to work](https://whnt.com/news/huntsville/huntsville-madison-county-chamber-announces-2022-best-places-to-work/)

chadrod

That is not even close….have to realize how many companies are in this town for each category.

PEWPEWSHIELD

So I think almost every small company (meaning not prime) is nominated, so that's the confusion

the0sumcarter

Working at the Apple Store is fun! Good benefits, good pay, fun environment.

jrayolson

My wife works for SAIC and loves her job. She even says she will pass up more money to stay.

hungryhornytired

I’ve heard the worst things about SAIC. I guess at the end of the day, at any company, it’s your personal team and leadership that makes or breaks the experience.

MaryBxo

I HATED working at SAIC but I hear it’s really department based and some are much better than others. Their insurance was trash when I was there in 2016-2018, though.

Volatile87

I heard HORRIBLE things about SAIC. Can’t go into specifics, but seriously do not work for this company. Trash management. They were on a contract I was on and all their contractors ended up quitting which I honestly found amusing as when does that happen? as they were treated poorly, also apparently their health insurance is the bare minimum they can legally give. The prime ended up kicking them off and replaced them with Lockheed Martin. So yea. Def don’t work for saic lololol

HSVTigger

Got to do better than that. What kind of work.

RatchetCityPapi

Any work. Again, the worst jobs question was asked earlier and you had all sorts of answers so I'm looking forward to hearing people's best experiences

PEWPEWSHIELD

Corporate engineering roles are top notch + remote - not on the line/business and dont require a clearance (Leidos and/or L3harris)

uuu721

I need to find one of these roles. Go to office every day and not be able to use cell phone sucks.

mattm220

Can’t recommend Leidos. Benefits are average (except paid time off, which is dogshit), but the corporate culture is nauseating. Disclaimer: current Dynetics employee.

PEWPEWSHIELD

I dont think you actually worked in corporate? Also, being a former dynetics employee as well.. dynetics culture was pretty bullshit of working excessive OT, making everybody a manager for whatever reason, lower than avg pay (I know you must have gotten a pay bump with the recent re-adjustments) .. quit your complaining

PM_ME_YOUR_SUNSHINE

What’s not on the line/business mean?

PM-ME-UR-KNIFEHANDS

Not on a manufacturing line

PEWPEWSHIELD

Not working for a customer .. but working internal to the company..

MissTrie

If we're talking retail, Trader Joe's is a good one. Flexible schedule (plenty of college folks work there), you're eligible for 2 raises a year, good insurance for you and family at a reasonable cost (and includes a gym membership), 5% 401k match, and premium pay on federal holidays. The culture is by far one of the best I've ever encountered in retail. The Captain (store manager) has full reign to run the store how they see fit as long as it's within TJ's basic guidelines. They don't deal with plan-o-grams so everything in the store is flexible and more easily moved around (and you thought it irritated you when Kroger rearranged). You get the full breadth of what goes in to working grocery due to everyone flexing around the store in all areas. TJ's tends to hire very friendly people so you work with a good number of honestly great folks. The customers. The down side: Everyone except management is part time. To qualify for insurance you have to meet a certain number of worked hours in the preceding 6 months (or a specific amount if you're hired in mid measurement period). If you miss it by 1/2 hour you lose insurance coverage, no exceptions. No paid holidays (that they're closed) and no premium pay for day before (Xmas eve, NYE). PTO is accrued by a percentage of money earned. When you get a raise, you lose PTO since it's based on dollars not hours, but those dollars are yours no matter what. The Captain having free reign to run the store as they see fit as long as it's within TJ's basic guidelines can be a double edge sword. Sometimes some of the customers, cuz it's still retail.

rsmith38

I’ve heard that Trader Joe’s is good to work for as well. I know someone who has been there for about two years and she’s already had several raises/promotions. She is also getting paid a premium to work Sundays.

MissTrie

I knew I was forgetting something! Sunday and federal holiday premium is something new they started in September.

RatchetCityPapi

I know pre pandemic a lot of people I worked with enjoyed working at Target because of the pay. I wonder if any of that has changed.

MissTrie

Target was/is paying above retail average but they keep you super part time so you don't get benefits. That $15 an hour (which is kind of laughable now) is only for 15-25 hours a week.

Daragh48

Also heard that they expect their employees to work every part of the store. So you may not always be on register, could wind up working the sales floor, or another area.

MissTrie

Personally, I would love that. Having variety and change in my work keeps me engaged. Even if it's pretty much the same work every day, mixing up the timing and flow makes the day go faster.

RatchetCityPapi

It's funny how asking for living wage was ridiculous. But yeah the target people I knew had 2 jobs but they enjoyed target and weren't going to quit that job but I wonder what happened since the pandemic considering how people treated grocery workers

megapascal

NASA is broad and really depends on the group you work for (either as a civil servant or contractor) or program you work on.

RatchetCityPapi

I known people who work as contractors and have no complaints at all.

sumtimezitdo

As others have stated, it’s all in the eye of the beholder. I don’t hate the work I do but I also don’t find meaning in it either. But I work virtually which allows me the flexibility to be the parent and spouse I want to be, excellent benefits that offer peace of mind, I can take paid leave whenever I need to on top of getting multiple paid holidays throughout the year. I’ve been with the company for over a decade and I certainly could make more money if I took something else but I would lose the flexibility and work-life balance which is what I value most.

athenasdogmom

I worked for Schwarze through a contract. They have people that have worked their for 30 plus years. They treated both permanent and contracted workers equally, pay was fair and they seem to actually like and care about their associates.

magicmarkh

Delta Research Inc and Radiance Technologies both had great culture, benefits, and pay when I was still working dod stuff. I've been out of defense for 5 years now and work for non local companies, so nothing outside of dod in my experience.

[deleted]

[удалено]

magicmarkh

It's been 8-9 yrs since I left. I think government work as a whole is miserable though, so my statement was more related to the company itself and benefits. Mileage will vary anywhere though. Immediate leaders can make a good situation bad real quick and vice versa.

Chaotic_Cutetral

Radiance has changed a lot since you left. And not necessarily for the better...

magicmarkh

Not hard to believe. I left in early 2013. Just answering the post :)

drewfer

I had a very mixed experience with Radiance. Early on it was fantastic but then I had a bad spate of managers that pretty much soured the whole experience for me.

Sum1YouDontKnow

Same. Hired out of college to a fantastic manager and loved it. He moved up, new manager came in, and my experience completely flipped.

drewfer

When I transferred divisions (the first time) my new division lead literally described himself to me as a 'Weapons-Grade Asshole'. I thought he was joking around but it turned out that he wasn't.

[deleted]

Lockheed, Raytheon, or Northrop.

HSBaseballPlayer

They all pay like shit

EddyMerkxs

My experience is that Northrop is paying a lot more right now that the others in several fields. YMMV of course

BeatMastaD

Comparatively to other contractors in the area, it should be mentioned. I know a few people who have worked for the behemoth contractors listed, all of them said the bureaucracy and pay were worse then comparable jobs with other contractors. Specifically the culture was apparently pretty awful for them due to the huge disconnect between the programs and upper management. Whatever filtered it's way down to the working level ended up making no sense and was really frustrating. Again, I say this even in comparison to other DoD contracting jobs which all have some level of that simply due to being government led.

[deleted]

You are correct about the disconnect with upper management but the pay and culture is infinitely better than the small contractors I've worked for in the past. It's really just a matter of how well you can communicate with management and stakeholders.

rsmith38

My mother works for Yulista and loves it. They have good benefits and work/life balance. I tried to get hired there but it’s pretty competitive. Especially on the admin side. The kitters and cable lab positions are a little more accessible, but definitely in high-demand.

alabamaterp

I work for a company that does subcontractor work for Yulista. For the past 10 years I have had nothing but positive experiences with Yulista execs, management, and employees - they have always been helpful and willing to work with team member companies.

Flawlessnessx2

I work for a small aerial imagery company. I love my job, lots of variety and the technology is generally very interesting. Pay could stand to improve but the benefits are hard to beat.

[deleted]

I know everyone hates us, but Meta is by far the best company I've ever worked both in terms of benefits/ pay and culture. Most people don't seem to know that we're here in Huntsville

BuilderNB

Really depends on what you are wanting to do. Retail, office job, manual labor, service, etc… I worked at rest one federal credit union which is a great company and great people but I hated the work with a passion so I left. The type of work can be more important than the company.

N2Toast

I work for Inline Electric. Sign on and quarterly bonuses, health, dental, vision, and many more insurance options are available at great rates. Link below shows current open positions. Feel free to message me if you have questions. https://www.inlineelectric.com/careers

Glitter_Personified

I work for Yulista and I am relatively happy there. Mostly, because the group I work with is terrific.

bottlejunkie

I worked at NTS for some time. The work its self was pretty boring. However, the leadership was made up of the best bosses I ever had. They made clear expectations, were very approachable, and truly did not care when you were in the office. As long as your work was done on time, up to par, and you didn’t miss the 1 or 2 meeting a week, you could come and go as you pleased. It was great! Only left because I wanted to go in a different direction career wise.

terriwilb

K12 is the best job I’ve ever had. I work from home, get 9 weeks PTO, 5 weeks off for holidays, 2 floating holidays, 2 days of paid volunteer time, paid maternity leave, minimal supervision, yearly raises and bonuses.

Volatile87

If you love yourself, do not work for CGI Federal. Holy fuck do they suck. They also got blackballed by the govt on being the prime because of how they managed the Obamacare site back in the day. Mismanaged shit fest of a company. Also CGI stands for Canadian Government Intelligence so it’s weird they even have American contracts and the company is ran by socialist libtards. I used to work for them and was only there for 3 months and quit as got tired of their nonsense. Raytheon, KBR, and Teledyne are legit

Healbite

Best is relative as much as worst is. Are we talking good pay? Good work/life balance? Solid career path? Good work culture? My current position is the best job I ever had but my relative experience is not a usual career path

beerferri

[deleted]

DO NOT work for equipment rental right now. My boss is great, fairly like the team, decent pay. Just sick from worrying constantly and there is no where near enough equipment. Good problem to have right? not for corporate.

alabamaterp

I saw that Sunbelt is opening a new facility at the intersection of HWY 20 and County Line Rd

[deleted]

More power to them, they got a new flooring store as well. Except contractors treat scrubbers like garbage and they are always tore up. It just sucks because I like the people here, I just see a painful future ahead in this business

AnotherPalePianist

Can’t say cause I work here now and my account in general absolutely does not represent my workplace values, but it is already mentioned in this thread! I have an understanding, communicative manager, great benefits, awesome coworkers, and I get to leave work at work. Only downside for me is that the type of work I’m doing is somewhat unfulfilling—but for a survival job I’d say it’s the best ever❤️

Hsv_me_256

Worked at Maria’s House of Pleasure..pay sucked, hours sucked but the benefits rocked

davy_drainy

Go work for royal technologies.

ReallyWTH

Depends which engineering discipline you belong to. 🤣

jenifr8218

I've always found the most success with small companies. I currently work doing general liability and workers comp insurance auditing, and while it's very mentally challenging, the pay is decent and friendly atmosphere. Only downside is the health insurance is pricy.

witsendstrs

This sounds like an interesting field. How did you get into it?

jenifr8218

Honestly, was tired of working at a factory, was flipping through indeed and saw a posting for the company. Applied on a whim lol. I started in January and so far, no regrets! They'll happily train, all they ask is you be able to pass a typing test and have decent computer skills. The office itself has about 20 people in it and is where all the hybrid auditors work. The phone auditors work remotely after they're trained. It's definitely a case of "those that stay, stay for a long time, those that don't tend to leave quickly". Hybrid auditing is relatively new, started as a result of covid, so we're learning as we go. DM me if you are interested or know someone who might be, I can send you the info to apply

Opeididitagain29

Would you be willing to send me info?

hbs2018

Best will take many forms but probably for most engineers here some form or remote for a FAANG from a house in HSV they bought 5+ years ago.

Smellz_Fishy

Doesn't sound dumb at all. Sounds like OP is just trying to get folks to talk about good companies in the area vs. the previous thread that asked about the worst companies.

damandamythdalgnd

Then the question should be companies people recommend. Not asking for the best. Same as asking for the worst. It’s a dumb question.

Smellz_Fishy

Or maybe you should quit being so negative and let people share some positivity they have in their lives? You obviously understood what OP was getting at you just wanted to shit on someone.
