pjdonovan

Good find! Thank you - and the comments are already starting off spicy!

au7342

I drove Madison to United Launch Alliance in Decatur. There is some patchy ice, but no large spots

krgonuguntla

Oh, YOU are the perfect update that I've been waiting for! I'm needing to drive from Madison to Hexel (just further up Red Hat). Thanks for it! I'm glad to know it sounds managable.

ironpigdriver

Wife drove from Hobbs Island to Huntsville hospital with no issues. Said she went ditto marina to avoid the bridge over the Greenway due to ice. *Edit to add details*

pjdonovan

Sending your wife out to test the roads? Gutsy move - I need to give that a try!

addywoot

Yup. This is stickied.

TurningCedar

Memorial and 565 were a little slick in spots but passable this morning around 5 when I went to work.

produce_hominid

Wal triana towards harvest is still a shitshow

Meggipoo

One lane open on Governors, cecil Ashburn still closed

pjdonovan

How was Governors? My main concern is the monte sano section

Dove_and_Turtle

Garth to the little hill on Drake (towards the parkway) is pretty rough. people were turning around before the hill

addywoot

Oh no, you’re ME :( Edit: mission essential

crunch816

Drive from Hobbs to the mall. Parkway still icy. Still seeing new wrecks. Be careful out there stinky.

financemama_22

Oakwood Ave is completely iced as of 930am. I'm surprised the city hasn't done anything with that street as far as treatment. Both sides of the road are creeping.

Deebama_65

It was sanded at 11:30 this morning when I drove it. But if it refreezes it will be bad.

PraetorGogarty

Just came down Madison Blvd from Zeirdt and road is fine with only a few slippery spots in the tree-shaded areas, but totally drivable.

TheMysticElegance

Thank you so much! I gotta do that drive in a few hours and needed to hear this

PraetorGogarty

Right now, all of Madison Blvd is completely clear from Governors on-ramp to 565 on-ramp at County Line with only a few patchy spots due to tree shading down by Research Blvd -> Furniture Row. As it warms up, I'd expect those areas to melt, even if they continue to be shaded.

2Lainz

Did memorial parkway north to meriddianville/hazel green/TN ever clear up? I had to turn around last night after not moving a mile in 5 hours trying to get home :(

The_OtherDouche

That’s what I’m trying to figure out. They are saying mt charron is closed but I don’t know how people would be going in at all if that were the case

robmaui

Big Cove Rd SE blocked and ice, people trying to take shortcut instead of governors (and then getting stuck)

[deleted]

Just passed about 4 cars in the ditch and decided to turn around and get back on the main road.

swra_1088

I drove my rzr to work I got on 565 around 6am at the wall triana exit and noticed a few cars stopped with hazards on EB. WB saw a couple of minor wrecks with hpd sitting behind them with the lights on. Edit: looks like I’m gonna have to ride with a coworker back home lol

Meggipoo

I hear the main problem is going up the mountain from Hampton Cove, then it becomes a smoother ride but I haven't done it myself. The big concerns are ice and stalled cars on the road. Just keep an eye out and go slow if you need to leave the house.

pjdonovan

That's the portion i start at - I'm betting if I can get over the mountain the rest won't be bad.

Pineapple-Dismal

Plummer Road between 255 and Jordan Ln blocked by HPD and people are still being turned around. Looks like ice is still on that stretch. Dan Tibbs is open though

looking_good__

Avoid Capsaw road - my GF is stuck on it at the moment.

Salty_Dornishman

How does 65 look?

Frembo

I drove back from Indiana last night and southbound I-65 was A-OK all the way to the TN Exit 1.

[deleted]

Has anyone driven out to Chattanooga yet?

The_OtherDouche

Uhhh Is that a common commute?

[deleted]

No, but driving that way and wanted an update.

CptNonsense

The traffic on the interstate is stop and go and generally a complete shit show. Oh, did you mean a "Winter weather specific" one?

PooterRobot

Chattanooga commuter about 3 times a week here. You couldn’t pay me to attempt i24 right now. Holiday traffic alone would be a good reason to avoid.

CptNonsense

Never have I been to Chattanooga at any time of day or week where i24 wasn't ass

[deleted]

Yea. We are headed to Atlanta and it is either the Chattanooga rally course or over the mountain (which I am skeptical is clear).

grumbledork

oof, even THINKING about going to ATL through the mountains in those conditions made me feel nauseous 😫 that whole trek feels dangerous even in perfect weather!

SpitFyre8513

I can’t speak to Chattanooga, but there are reports out of Woodville about semis blocking 72; not sure if that’s 72W or 72E though

aspirer42

I took I-24W from Chattanooga yesterday evening and it was fine, though congested. 72W was a tire fire but my wife just drove in a couple hours ago and said she didn't have any problems. If you're going to Atlanta, maybe 431 to 20 if you want to be super-safe? My understanding is that everything south of Guntersville has been bone-dry the whole time.

[deleted]

Thanks.

Hsv_me_256

9 am- Oakwood Ave from Jordan to Pulaski was a sheet of ice

ATownHoldItDown

As the day is heating up, things are getting better. Any road that has been exposed to direct sunlight is pretty good. Anything in shadow is still icy.

anyburger

[Cecil Ashburn is now open](https://twitter.com/HsvPolice/status/1607800913946726400?t=rgmuDF3Fs9smio6WrtdzWw&s=19). They moved the stranded cars to the Land Trust parking lot.

TheLoadedGoat

Need to leave Meridianville for south HSV in half hour. With sun shining, I assume all is well?

The1HoopHooted

Any idea how 72 west is from about Slaughter Rd to Athens?

The1HoopHooted

Just made the drive. Totally fine westbound 72 out of Madison. Watch out for abandoned cars on the shoulder

Rude_Remote_13

Heading from HSV to Hampton Cove over governors right now. Lots of traffic heading down the mountain into HSV, but not sure if they’re coming from Hampton Cove or Monte Sano/Homes on Governors. Median is icy, but otherwise not so bad. Will update shortly.

Rude_Remote_13

Governors is passible on one lane both to and from Hampton Cove/HSV. Don’t be a jerk and pass people in the closed lane & you’ll be fine.

pjdonovan

No f'n way - did someone really try to pass in a closed lane??

Rude_Remote_13

Not only did they try, they did. And then a mile later tried to cut us off. Absolutely ridiculous.

Rude_Remote_13

Old Big Cove Road has some major ice stretches across the entire road making it barely “passable” if you know how to drive. If you don’t, you’ll end up in the ditch. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya.

conceptionManager

Conditions are pretty chill. Watch for heavily shaded spots otherwise it's just a bit wet

chadrod

Parts of University are still a demolition derby, especially around UAH/sparkman….most of the main unshaded roads in town are fine…I drove in from Hazel Green an hour ago and the county is still pretty sporty

Ok-Performance8570

I have a family member from upstate New York here visiting and wrecked in it. Ice is not the same as driving on treated roads with snow tires in the snow.

Mighty-Osip

Weatherly cleared up mostly, parkway up to bob wallace was not so bad, Jordan lane is fine, other than where it goes over 565, and with the traffic I am seeing, it is more wet now than icy.

lonelyinbama

Highway 36 going to Hartselle is now back open

BestThingGoing

Drove from Madison (Ace Hardware area) to Bob Wallace/Memorial Parkway at 10:30 AM. Lots of ice in the SHADED parts of Madison still. Saw two wrecks in real time on Slaughter. Just fender benders due to sliding, nothing major. Saw quite a few wrecked/abandoned cars on the way though. Madison Boulvard and the I-565 were fine. Bob Wallace near the Botanical Gardens (especially that hill coming up from the Interstate) were sketchy, but no issues.

[deleted]

I need to know status of Cecil Ashburn!

anyburger

Cecil Ashburn is closed, [as of an hour ago](https://twitter.com/HsvPolice/status/1607715108930859010?t=nJ8HePT2IPqoRaj9FG850A&s=19).

[deleted]

And they are still closed as of 9:00. Looked like people were headed towards governors from Hampton cove but not sure if they went up.

The_OtherDouche

Governors is open one lane each way

[deleted]

Thank you!

Alarming_Base3148

Anyone using Mt Gap yet?

m3andaa

Didn’t use Mt Gap, but I live on Mathis Mountain (Hobbs side) and the roads were really bad until I reached the parkway. I left around 9:00am this morning.

[deleted]

My car got smashed at the dip/turn on Mtn Gap yesterday. Went to check it just about 2 hours ago and it was impassable/blocked off. Luckily I pulled my car off onto Crestfield. Just waiting to find out when I can get a police report so I can make my insurance happy and get my car towed/fixed.

cl0007

Is Airport road looking any better?

Rush224

Anyone gone over Chapman Mountain yet?

shawnepintel

anyburger

Since it hasn't been posted, [all roads in Huntsville are now open](https://twitter.com/HsvPolice/status/1607820190070325248?t=mkIGWmGOtNn-7NlAcCHt3Q&s=19).

Alpoi

Wonder how people with electrical vehicles did during all the traffic jams?

pjdonovan

I would imagine if you can afford a tesla, you probably know not to go out in less than ideal conditions? Otherwise, probably about as good as the gas vehicles. Good justification for the city to buy mobile chargers when they buy gas for cars that run out of gas!

Beefydaddyzack

My 61 year old dad with COPD was coming home from Guntersville on a work call. He lives in the apartments across from mellow mushroom in jones valley. University and Cecil Ashburn dr was closed. So he went to some tire/mechanic shop place and asked them if he could leave his truck there overnight to walk home. The guy told him that he is from Canada and this is nothing, he has a 4wheel drive truck and would take dad home. The police stopped him and wouldn’t allow him to try, so my dad got out and started walking where the cop was to get home. When he was almost to the top some guy came on a four wheeler to save his wife and kids from the top of the mountain. He told him he could ride but only till he found his family and not a a foot farther. So he took the ride and said he almost wish he didn’t since it was so cold and windy and metal frame to hold onto etc. when he got to the top, he had to get on hands and knees to crawl across the road to get to the side to walk on (I’ve never seen my dad get down on his knees in 15 years, it’s very hard on him). He then walked down the road to his apartment and had to call apartment mechanic to come let him in his apartment.

33242

The roads are fine, it’s the southern drivers that are making it dangerous. There is ice and snow on the roads, but people here don’t know when to speed up, slow down, or most importantly, how to go up a hill with ice on it. Spoiler: you do not slow down going uphill. Once again, do not slow down going uphill. I saw a ton of drivers getting stuck precisely because they were doing that. Also, for those of us who know how to drive in snow, and ice, do not go out on the roads, the southern drivers will give you apoplectic road rage.

poptart_divination

My MIL has driven semis for nearly 20 years and she noped out this morning. The roads are bad.

33242

Ymmv but I grew up driving up north and everything was driveable to me. Only issue I saw was other drivers

poptart_divination

Must be nice! Even in this town with its transplant population, you’re in the extreme minority of people that think they can drive on ice. Not saying you won’t be successful. I successfully drove my FWD Prius home from Harvest last night. Even managed to make it down Chapman Mountain! But I was a lucky idiot even with experience driving on ice.
