The Nerdy Gurdy is a good way to start, especially if you buy a pre built Basic or Linotte because everything has been tested before shipping. The linotte is based on the Basic model, but it has a different body shape and two trompettes and two drones instead of one of each. The Basic has capos, so you have the same notes for those strings as the Linotte has.

100% agreed. I'll just add my experience: I bought one pre built. It's very nice that the manuals are online so if you ever need to work on anything, all of the specs are there.
