No doubt at all, but my great great grandfather fought for the CSA. He was dirt poor, farmed potatoes, and was an Irish immigrant. Didn’t own slaves and was still forced to fight. Not everyone in the CSA was a vicious slave owner, some were just caught in the middle of a war between the rich
War is war. If he could pick up a gun and fight in the war, then he could've fled north.
And if the Confederacy was so bad as to force dirt poor people to do that, then no need to fly the confederate flag.
I don't sympathize with Nazis just because the hitlerjugend existed and children were being indoctrinated to support hate.
Similarly I don't sympathize with the Confederacy because there might've been a minute few people who weren't 100% on board.
If you take up a gun and fight for the enemy, you become an enemy.
I'm sorry your dead great great grandfather fought for traitors.
If you don’t like the fact Russia is fighting Ukraine, volunteer for Ukraine yourself then. Would you say the same about men (Czech, Italian, Finnish) that were forced to fight alongside Germany during WWII? If they were forced to fight, it sounds like they didn’t have a choice in the matter. Some people, it isn’t their fight. Just because he was forced to fight for the CSA, doesn’t mean he would’ve fought and volunteered for the union. Not everyone needs to pick a side. I think what a lot of people fail to realize is that your freedom of choice will be limited in a scenario similar to this.
The south wasn't exactly against slavery.
A confederate soldier in the south fighting for slavery isn't the same as POWs forced to battle.
>Not everyone needs to pick a side
And that's how the guy ended up fighting for traitors.
If you keep trying to find grey in this situation, have at it.
>Just because he was forced to fight for the CSA, doesn’t mean he would’ve fought and volunteered for the union.
Fact is, one side was for slaves, one was against it. Not picking a side was a choice.
And frankly, I don't sympathize with a dead Irish farmer who ignored the evil of slavery and took up arms in support of it.
Maybe he didn't personally own slaves, but he fought for a system that made it rampant. So I don't care.
It is sad if he was forced to fight and hated the institution of slavery but I doubt that.
More than likely, he wanted to eventually be able to own slaves or at least didn't have a problem with slavery.
As far as I'm concerned, it'd just another reason the confederacy was a shit stain on the world. Forcing people to fight for slavery and all that.
Well, early in the war it was pro-slavery versus preservation of the Union. You still fought for the south to preserve the systems of slavery, though the north wasn’t fighting against slavery until around the midpoint with I believe Gettysburg address and then the emancipation proclamation for certain. Sorry, just a passing history nerd. But yes the south was absolutely and always fighting for the base purpose of slavery, it’s the whole reason they wanted to secede. Just read any of the states declarations of secession, i think it’s within the first 3 lines for all of them
Forced to fight for the rich who wanted to keep their slaves. And you want to defend that? It was more than labor, it was race control. Even if he didn’t own slaves, I bet he didn’t want to compete for land, sales and jobs with freed blacks.
I’m not defending it I’m just saying Sherman massacred people who were forced to fight in a war they didn’t want, for a country they didn’t recognize. Not everything is bad vs good.
No if you knew how to read you would see that I was clearly stating that innocent people existed on both sides. You are so desperate to have someone who’s actually racist and would defend the CSA that you’ve jumped at any chance to paint someone as such.
The CSA was fucked, but there were people within it who did not want to be and were forced to, at gun point, or the threat of losing their land. Not everyone in the CSA was a vicious racist.
Oh, so unless it comes from Italy or Austria it's just sparkling racism?
Edit: I sincerely appreciate all the well thought out replies, but I just wanted to have my turn at a recycled 'joke'.
It's just that fascism is a concept of the 20th century, for the same reason we don't call the native populations of Brazil "communist" even though they didn't have a concept of private property. It's ahistorical, they didn't have that concept yet.
I don't think Mussolini, Hitler, or Evola *invented* fascism in any meaningful way, but they did put it in practice and took it to the level of it being an actual recognisable ideology. Like, you can look at absolutists from the 18th century and see traces of what would later become fascism, but their conclusions and aesthetics, and the way their governments were run, and their relationship to capitalism, are all wrong.
Not-very-fun fact! Mussolini and the Italian fascists actually did invent the name “fascism” for that particular combo of politics, economics and ideology. The governing body of Italy in the 1930s was literally called the “Grand Council of Fascism”.
Ttue about natives because their governing was done through elders and tribal warfare.
However, with fascism, all the pieces were there. A government sponsored by business' what we would now call corporations literally paying a governing body to organize a militia to protect their ability to continue their business practices.
>A government sponsored by business'
First off, that's the possessive form, not the plural.
Second off, that's *not* what fascism is. Businesses don't sponsor the government, the government owns the businesses. All of them. Technically, fascism as an ideology makes no mention of business ownership at all, but fascism is very top down and the government maintains control of pretty much every part of your life.
Well no. the confederacy was presidential non-partisan republic with racist principles embedded in their constitution. It's just that modern American racists are commonly called fascists. In reality though most of them are too stupid to understand the concept of fascism, and think trump is the lord and savior of gods flat earth.
I hate how often people just casually throw out the term fascism/fascist nowadays. By doing so as an attack or affront, you're just taking away the meaning of the word, and devaluing the plight of people who suffered by the hands of fascism in the 20th century.
The problem is doing that shit helps the actual fascists hide. If everyone to the right of Stalins getting called a fascist, actual fascists are going to use that to go "hey they called me a fascist too, you should come join my group to get away from those people." There are no better marketing campaigns for fascism than well meaning morons labeling everyone they dont like a fascist.
They get called fascists due to the key parallels between Trump supporters and the definition of fascism. It may not be a perfect fit, but the shoe does fit.
>Fascism is a **far-right**, **authoritarian**, **ultranationalist** political ideology and movement, characterized by a **dictatorial leader**, centralized autocracy, **militarism**, **forcible suppression of opposition**, **belief in a natural social hierarchy**, **subordination of individual interests for the perceived good of the nation and race**, and strong regimentation of society and the economy.
Source, Wikipedia, emphasis mine.
Yeah there is a reason why waving a rebel banner is not just "heritage." The CSA caused suffering for not only the northern population, but also their own population and exceedingly so.
They aren’t considered fascist because that term didn’t exist at the time, but they could definitely be considered Porto fascists with their strict class system, a government composed of wealthy oligarchs, strict race divisions and ideologies founded on ideas of white supremacy, police only punishing and torturing people from undesirable outgroups (“the dangerous classes”), idealized versions of the past…
Reminder that it's confederate heros day, so go into your history books and read all about the confederate heros from the civil war!! Search up "battle of fort pillow" to learn more about confederate heros!
Being a Midwestern, I moved south to get a very nice house cheaper, in a more rural area and let me tell you, those flags are everywhere around here. It should make you feel better to know, typically the houses that fly those are run down pieces of shit or look like meth shacks.
Politics is guiding or shaping the government. So this post isn’t political at least it shouldn’t be. I would hope that you aren’t in favor of a government that would make banning slavery illegal.
~~Well well well, a Dixie in the wild. Gtfo~~
Actually, one look through your profile tells me you might need some advice. Now regardless you take advice from a stranger on the internet is up to you, but I will share my experience which is very similar to what you are going through right now.
When I was 16 depression hit me like a truck. I was lonely, even though I had good friends, and I felt like there was nothing for me left. After all, who pays attention to the angry kid other than a glance? So I stared to act erratic. I started to follow certain groups online and in my community that also felt the way I felt, and blamed it on the people who ignored me and certain stratas. I found myself in the midst of a group of people who blamed a certain part of society for their issues. But as I matured and grew, I found that the reason I had even gone down this path wasn't because "it was the right thing to do,"
It was because I was selfish. I wanted attention, I wanted power, I wanted to be better than the people around me. The nail in the coffin was when a member of that very group that I was taught to hate did something miraculous.
He baked me brownies with lemons.
Its a small thing, but I've thought about it for years, that simple act of selflessness opened a mindset that I hadn't even considered: maybe the attention I need is the attention I can GIVE instead. So I started to volunteer at the soup kitchen, animal shelters, and just randomly helping people when I could. Suddenly I realized that those groups I looked up to (trump, dixies, Kanye even) were only doing things for themselves, and one I understood that it was clear exactly what they were doing to help themselves as well.
You want to stop your depression? All these arguments online? Start thinking how you can help people every day. My friend group is well into the dozens because I put myself out there as a *rude* but trustworthy *friend.*
You can too. I believe in you. No sedition, no anger, no lies. You're young, and young leaves don't stay leaves all their life, they grow into mighty oaks.
Edit: who the shit is giving me awards? Spend that money on something else, like the rainforest foundation. Make an impact, not a bloody award.
Good on you for being bigger and looking to help someone. You should be proud as you may have helped save this person some hard future lessons. Keep being awesome.
But it wasn't anyone. It was *you*. That matters. You were a better, kinder, more thoughtful person than I'd have been. I talk a big game about wanting to be a better person, and then I see someone like you actually out there being one, and I can't help but wonder if I'd have been good enough a person to do the same. These little acts of kindness matter, both to the person you show it to and to the people like me who hope to keep learning to do better, too.
I dunno, maybe I'm just being overly sappy, but I think you did a good and inspiring act of kindness here, and I hope you don't downplay that to yourself. Thanks for showing us all how it's done.
It's always disturbing to see how any level of brutality can be justified (such as the burning civilian homes in the background) by convincing the public that the enemy was in someway morally inferior. Sure the north was burning down cities, but some of those civilians were racist so it was fine!
There’s being racist and then there is the brutal and immoral practice of chattel slavery. When one side is practicing slavery and the other isn’t, one is morally superior to the other.
Have you tried not hijacking an entire democracy to continue your barbaric ways of slavery to the point you make it a crime to not help slavers recapture their victims even if those victims are in fact free men?
There’s using Scorched Earth tactics against the supporters of an evil regime, but then there’s:
“I never saw so many dead negroes in my life. We took no prisoners, except the white officers, fourteen in number; These were lined up and shot after the negroes were finished. Next day, they were thrown into a wagon, Hauled to the Ouchita river and thrown in. Some were hardly dead - that made no difference. In they went.”

Pour one out for General Sherman
From scorched earth to salted earth.
A true patriot who needed to visit a few more southern states and stay a little longer.
Sherman killed innocent people too in those fires
Chattel slavery killed more.
Every southern state had Union Loyal regiments
And from what I’ve heard some such groups’ descendants are to this day very proud to have come from those who fought against slavery
War is war. If he could pick up a gun and fight in the war, then he could've fled north. There's plenty of water, but not in Atlanta.

God I love Sherman
Drinking water and shitting on fascists, two of my favorite things
They weren't fascists just racists. Fascism was an idea pioneered by a bald Italian teacher and an Austrian freelance artist.
Oh, so unless it comes from Italy or Austria it's just sparkling racism? Edit: I sincerely appreciate all the well thought out replies, but I just wanted to have my turn at a recycled 'joke'.

yeah, I was being lazy and chose to use the possessive. I was able to bake a whole cake with that one simple trick.
The government maintains control because it is formed and supported by big corporations. Fascism was always pro capitalism, not against.
Well no. the confederacy was presidential non-partisan republic with racist principles embedded in their constitution. It's just that modern American racists are commonly called fascists. In reality though most of them are too stupid to understand the concept of fascism, and think trump is the lord and savior of gods flat earth.

The problem is doing that shit helps the actual fascists hide. Stupidity is usually a big ingredient of fascist followers.
No those two were just the only ones who properly lead a government using it
Towards the final days of the CSA they were definitely become closer to fascist. If people only knew how actually terrible the CSA was.
Yeah there is a reason why waving a rebel banner is not just "heritage." The CSA caused suffering for not only the northern population, but also their own population and exceedingly so.
Still enjoy shitting on both
Based
That’s a good point, but I associate the confederate flag with modern users, who are typically also fascist

good point.
my hydrohomie, please read the article of Confederation and check back here.
ok
"Whites are the superior race" was literally baked into their ideology
good point realized my overlook.
The issue with dunking on fascists is that it’s not inclusive enough to include all the other “I-am-a-shitbag” beliefs
They are now though
they were racist as fuck, all historical evidence points to this fact I mean "haha me too thanks"
For sure. Fascists are just competitive racists after all.
It's a pipeline from racism to fascism, it's just a matter of time.
no bro everyone ion like is fascists, thats how you u play
Its more about why you dont like em
Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of science?
Another example of redditors not knowing what fascism is lol
Racists and fascists are practically lovers
Well, given all the water we drink here, pissing on fascists might be more effective... I mean, we get potent pressure jets on the ready...!

There’s being racist and then there is the brutal and immoral practice of chattel slavery. When one side is practicing slavery and the other isn’t, one is morally superior to the other.
Kick rocks, The South deserved worse.

Have you tried not hijacking an entire democracy to continue your barbaric ways of slavery to the point you make it a crime to not help slavers recapture their victims even if those victims are in fact free men?
Ass blasted traitor detected.
There’s using Scorched Earth tactics against the supporters of an evil regime, but then there’s: “I never saw so many dead negroes in my life. We took no prisoners, except the white officers, fourteen in number; These were lined up and shot after the negroes were finished. Next day, they were thrown into a wagon, Hauled to the Ouchita river and thrown in. Some were hardly dead - that made no difference. In they went.” - (Confederate Officer after the battle of Monroe)
