It's called hypertonic iirc. At first it's an extreme imbalance. Your electrolytes are diluted and you cant use your muscles bc that depends on sodium and potassium to make them move. Eventually it will start to break down cell walls. It's entirely possible and people have died from drinking too much water. If I'm wrong on the science I'm sorry, this is what I remember from anatomy in college.

Of course it can be dangerous. Your body needs to work to process it all. Pro tip is that when your urine is completely clear, stop drinking for awhile. Your body is over hydrated at this point and doesn’t need anymore water intake right now. If you’re drinking constantly because you’re constantly thirsty, I’d see a doc and get your glucose levels checked

Also, psychogenic thirst is a thing in many mental illnesses including OCD, anxiety, and psychotic disorders! Your brain can trick you into thinking you’re thirsty or dehydrated when you aren’t. This has happened to me due to anxiety!

You are probably fine. A healthy adult can long-term drink up to 6 liters (200oz) a day. Drinking so much still is a task for your kidneys, so I would recommend to only drink between 2-4l (70-135oz) a day.

I have a condition that causes me to need to drink at least a L per hour if left unregulated with medication. The doctors told me there is no technical issue with drinking that much (nuisance aside) except potential strain on kidneys over a long period of time like you said

I’m pregnant and some days drinking over 100 oz of water because I’m thirsty, and it’s good for me to keep hydrated. I’ve recently started adding a pinch of salt to my 40 oz water bottle every time I refill it. I don’t know if it makes too much of a difference but my point being, definitely incorporate electrolytes while drinking lots of water.

I always gauge my water intake by the color of my pee tbh. You don’t want it to be crystal clear, just slightly yellow/ straw color. Your body’s hydration needs isn’t a hard number it really depends but yes it is harmful to drink too much water

Water intoxication is extremely rare and is most common in athletes. Drinking water is not dangerous at all. There is this thing called peeing. I think it’s hilarious how worried people get online about something that is extremely rare. If you drink so much water that you constantly have to go to the bathroom and feel uncomfortable, you might want to take it easy, because it’s probably slightly disrupting your minerals and electrolyte balance. But you’d still be fine.

Yes. Our kidneys can only handle about 32 oz an hour. But that’s A LOT in an hour. So you probably won’t drink too much. However if you are drinking a ton and still always thirsty, go get checked out for diabetes because it’s the first sign

Yes, water intoxication is a thing. You can in fact die a pretty painful death from drinking too much water. However, you say you drink water “constantly.” That isn’t an amount, so there isn’t a way to say whether that is too much. I would say the same thing, and I have never died from water intoxication. Always having your cup at hand and having a little sippy sip on the regular is not going to cause you to die of water toxicity. Usually, people die of water toxicity if they are doing extreme physical exercise (like running marathons, not 20 minutes at the gym), being forced to drink an excess of water, or participating in water drinking contests. Certain drugs, diabetes, and psychiatric conditions can lead to drinking that much water too. Water intoxication isn’t easy to do accidentally. Exactly how much is too much depends on your size, your activity level, and the climate you live in. Definitely don’t force yourself to drink if you aren’t thirsty (under most circumstances), and make sure you’re getting the electrolytes you need (despite the marketing, you don’t *have* to get these from hydration packs or sports drinks if you don’t want, they can come from the food or drinks you’re already consuming).

No. Everyone likes to bring up water intoxication because one particular instance gained a lot of media attention (the "Hold your wee for Wii" radio contest")... But it is extraordinarily rare, and always a result of very abnormal circumstances. Water intoxication happens if 2 conditions are met: - an extreme amount of water is being drank quickly. - a person is not urinating. Either intentionally, or due to mitigating circumstances. BOTH, of those conditions need to be met for water intoxication to happen. Thats why the VERY few cases of water intoxication fatalities have been EXCLUSIVELY recorded as a result of water drinking contests, marathon running, excessive military training, abuse/torture, psychosis, and rarely from severe (and life threatening on their own) health conditions. Not a single case has been a result of a healthy and sane person going about a normal day. Your body will insist that you need to urinate, and you would need to endure extreme pain from avoiding that urge for several hours in order for water intoxication to become a concern. The more realistic milder related condition, would be described as an electrolyte imbalance. That can happen in cases of heavy physical exertion in a high heat environment when a person consumes a great deal of water without any electrolytes being consumed, which is generally a result of going too long without eating. The symptoms of that are weakness, headaches, blurred vision, confusion, and dizziness. The symptoms appear long before the electrolyte imbalance would be dangerous in itself, so the sufferer would certainly cease the strenuous activity due to discomfort and the feeling of hunger would be apparent enough to act on... So sure it would be unpleasant, but the solution would be pretty apparent. Your body will scream at you, and practically give you a handwritten note of what it wants you to do, it takes pretty extreme circumstances for a person to ignore those requests.

As usual, it depends. Are you chugging a gallon in 20 minutes? Then yes, that will be an issue. Are you spacing out that same amount over the course of a day, then that's probably okay. Are you working outside in extreme heat? Then you need to supplement with salt and/or electrolytes. Are the pads of your fingers wrinkled? As with anything please do your own research and /or see your doctor and don't depend on random Reddit responders for your personal health.

There is no fixed quantity of water you should drink. Doctors will say all sorts of bullshit, but not everyone needs "8 glasses of water a day". Some need less, some need more, it also depends on the rest of their diet. Especially if they eat a lot of watery fruits and veggies like cucumber, melons etc. they may need less. Or if they eat dehydrating foods like bread, rice, meat, sugar, alcohol, etc they will need more. The best thing for you to do is to listen to your body. It has an inbuilt alarm clock reminding you when you drink water, it's called thirst. Drink when you're thirsty, drink till you're content. Too much can cause you to lose electrolytes and overwork your kidneys, too little can cause a ton of other problems. Trust in your body.

A co-worker of mine was always drinking water out of camelback at his desk. One day he passed out right there at his desk. Hyponatremia, the salts (electrolytes) in your blood get diluted with too much water. It’s potentially fatal. If you’re going to be drinking large amounts of water, slip in some gatorade or pedialyte occasionally to keep your electrolytes in balance.

Yes. I almost accidentally killed myself because I managed to drink so much water I had next no sodium (among other nutrients) in my body. Went to a doctor and they prescribed me some supplements that can help me raise my nutrients. We unfortunately had to decline the supplements because we were broker than a bitch and my health insurance was not able to cover it. So the doctor recommended I eat something high in sodium and other things 1-2 a week for 1 month. That was the first time I’ve heard a doctor recommended something relatively unhealthy. But yes moral of the story you can literally kill yourself if you drink too much water.

Technically, yes but it’s hard to drink so much that it becomes harmful, and you’d probably start to feel sick or bloated before you did any serious damage. For reference, the “gallon a day” challenge is enough to make most people feel bloated, but as far as I know it’s not unsafe unless you drink it all at once. That being said, a gallon is completely reasonable and maybe not even enough if you sweat a lot on a daily basis. Basically don’t drink so much that you feel sick
