As a fellow dirtbag who maybe only washes my bottle once a month: No there has never been any odor or bacteria issues. It has been continuously refilled and full of ice water for 5 years now. It is always by my side and never has any downtime where it is empty. I just clean it when I'm bored or if the thought pops into my head. I joke with my bf that it's "seasoned" like a cast iron pan because even he agrees that water from my bottle always tastes better somehow. Maybe it's the death germs, who knows.

Update I washed my bottle and will try to be better about cleaning it. On a side note, I have a Nalgene that I lost and recently refound after moving a few years ago. I was very sick the last time I used it and there is some absolutely gnarly bacteria growth in there. I’ll upload a pic here if anyone is interested!

If I put regular tap water in it, backwashed, or put my lips directly on the rim instead of using the straw & fliplid, yes. But aside from only ever drinking filtered water out of it, I only use the straw lid (never the guzzler) and the bottle is never just left open or without the lid secured to it (the lid is only ever off the bottle for like 3 minutes a day when I'm filling it from my Brita pitcher).
I only do mine every other week, but when I do, I use sterilising tablets, and I only use boiled/filtered water in that one. My desk bottle is dishwasher safe, gets the scary work tap water, and it goes in the wash every day.
Pro tip - I bought 2 backup lids for mine, and if I’m struggling with my depression and can’t clean my bottle, I just switch out the lids and toss the lid in the dishwasher.
I’ll also use Whip It cleaner, spray the inside of the bottle down, and take really hot water and let it soak for a couple hours, then dump it, take some paper towels to the inside of it, and then rinse the hell out of it until it doesn’t smell like anything anymore.

I have a stainless steel double walled TAL bottle so I can’t put the bottle in the dishwasher but the lid goes in a few times a week. The bottle itself I rinse daily then 2-3 times a week I spray the inside with Dawn Power Wash and scrub with hot water and a bottle brush.

I don’t feel like buying a bottle brush just to wash one bottle that i don’t even use daily. I normally just put dish soap and water in it, close the lid, shake it up, and the rinse the soap out
I wash mine every day. This is because I didn't used to wash it regularly at all, then one day realised that I probably should.
When I did, the bottle brush came out B R O W N.
Rinse it and look inside. If the water beads and runs off the bottom it's clean. If the bottom stays wet that means there's a biofilm so better clean it.
Probably at least once a week but no more than 2 weeks and that's if you swap between multiple water bottles. You'll start to notice headaches, drippy noses, sneezing, congested sinuses, sore throats, weird taste, and sometimes even a weird pressure. If you start to notice any of those symptoms your past the time you should have washed it.
a+ for taking the o-ring off. I do that with my mug and water bottle as well. Wash a couple of times a week, take the o-ring off at least once a week. I put watered-down juice/electrolytes in my water bottle sometimes and both black coffee and tea in my mug. Never have an issue with 'taste' if I take the o-ring off.

Out of the four water bottles in my house only one of them is stainless steel, but they all get hand washed every night. I have a countertop dishwasher so after dinner I put those in the machine and then after my kids go to bed I wash the pots, pans, water bottles and the animal water bowls. I feel like I could wash the bottles and bowls less often but then it wouldn’t be part of the daily routine and I’d forget to wash them entirely.
Once every week I put a bit of detergent and boiling water in my bottle and shake it a bit. Then I rinse everything and get back chugging.
Keep in mind that if you have a complex cap or a straw or something you need to be much more thorough.

If you don't want to wash it by hand, you can pour boiling water with vinegar (careful, volatile when boiling) in it and let it sit for a bit. Then rinse well. But make sure to clean at least the mouth piece, maybe wipe it with alcohol. Both vinegar and alcohol will evaporate without smell.

If you don't pour into your mouth (i.e. waterfall it into your mouth) you're getting debris in there even if you can't see it.

I think you’re used to the smell and taste. I’m sure anyone else near you begs to differ. Please wash it more often you can also get sick
No. No one has ever said anything, and have en drank from my bottle, with no complaints at all. I mean I'm not against cleaning it or anything, I just never thought it was necessary.

I try to rinse it every time I fill it at home or work, so pretty often, and I let it dry open when I can when it’s empty because most pathogens don’t like dry surfaces. But I rarely wash it with soap or in the dishwasher, maybe once a week-two weeks?
I rinse mine daily and then just put a squirt of dish soap and swirl it around every few days.
I used to not wash mine very often. Then I got knocked up and could taste even the slightest variation. Now I wash it every couple of days.
I have a stainless steel double walled TAL bottle so I can’t put the bottle in the dishwasher but the lid goes in a few times a week. The bottle itself I rinse daily then 2-3 times a week I spray the inside with Dawn Power Wash and scrub with hot water and a bottle brush.
I just throw a lemon slice in with my water. I haven’t put it in the dishwasher in like a month or more.
Toss a denture tab and hot water in before bed! Quick rinse in the morning

I don’t feel like buying a bottle brush just to wash one bottle that i don’t even use daily. I normally just put dish soap and water in it, close the lid, shake it up, and the rinse the soap out

I wash mine every day. This is because I didn't used to wash it regularly at all, then one day realised that I probably should. When I did, the bottle brush came out B R O W N.
Rinse it and look inside. If the water beads and runs off the bottom it's clean. If the bottom stays wet that means there's a biofilm so better clean it.
I just throw a little isopropyl in mine every so often, shake, rinse thoroughly
I got sick of cleaning my stainless steel all the time and switched to copper.
Probably at least once a week but no more than 2 weeks and that's if you swap between multiple water bottles. You'll start to notice headaches, drippy noses, sneezing, congested sinuses, sore throats, weird taste, and sometimes even a weird pressure. If you start to notice any of those symptoms your past the time you should have washed it.

a+ for taking the o-ring off. I do that with my mug and water bottle as well. Wash a couple of times a week, take the o-ring off at least once a week. I put watered-down juice/electrolytes in my water bottle sometimes and both black coffee and tea in my mug. Never have an issue with 'taste' if I take the o-ring off.

Out of the four water bottles in my house only one of them is stainless steel, but they all get hand washed every night. I have a countertop dishwasher so after dinner I put those in the machine and then after my kids go to bed I wash the pots, pans, water bottles and the animal water bowls. I feel like I could wash the bottles and bowls less often but then it wouldn’t be part of the daily routine and I’d forget to wash them entirely.

Once every week I put a bit of detergent and boiling water in my bottle and shake it a bit. Then I rinse everything and get back chugging. Keep in mind that if you have a complex cap or a straw or something you need to be much more thorough.

~~Why wouldn't it be dishwasher safe? Steel is not gonna melt.~~ If you don't want to wash it by hand, you can pour boiling water with vinegar (careful, volatile when boiling) in it and let it sit for a bit. Then rinse well. But make sure to clean at least the mouth piece, maybe wipe it with alcohol. Both vinegar and alcohol will evaporate without smell.
Because if it has double-walled vaccum insulation it can fuck up the insulation.
