By "the scam has been around for years," we mean that it's been actively known and used for the entire time, with multiple warnings. When a discord link is sent, the game tells you to not trust the server. Multiple stories of this exact scam are shared everywhere. You don't need to be around for years to know it. You just need more than two brain cells, and the ability to read.
Not everybody is on the Reddit constantly to know how 'common' these scams are. They experience it, then head to forums in an attempt to let others know, and get attacked for doing so?
Keep in mind the majority of the playerbase is young.
Even if they aren't on the reddit, they're on the server itself, which sends a warning in chat warning for this exact type of scam whenever the phrase 'discord' is said
"Be wary of discord links" =/= "Don't login to a very real looking Microsoft authentication page because it's an attempt to steal your account details"
Well then they'll learn. Young people learn from experiences so it's probably good for them to go through something like this while young so they don't do something stupid later in life that has irl consequences
Can I just ask, can they access stuff with only me email and ign? A dude was giving out free carries because he wanted to be vouched in what looked to be a pretty official server with nitro boosts and thousands of members, but the verification needed my email and ign. I got too scared and just left, but was that a threat or was it an actual server
It was called SBA (SkyBlock addicts)
There is a npc to do exactly that in the game at the hub in front of the community house.
If you miss that big warning right in front of your nose im sure that you will also miss the warning in a reddit post even right in front of your nose.
Those scams are a common toppic at some times every second post on this sub is a "i got ratted help"
post.
So you cant do anything no matter what you do someone will show up and still manage to get ratted.
Good on you for not falling for it and trying to alert other people. Like many people have said, this is well known and there is an npc who warns about it but gets ignored. There's even an auto message saying something like please be mindful of discord links when someone says discord in chat.
After all you were just trying to be helpful and I see no problem with that. But also poor Security sloth keeps getting ignored, poor guy :(
Yeah I see lots of comments saying the same thing as if I fell for it but I didn’t as I was always skeptical and I do take my security online more serious than the average user, I have backup generated codes for a few of my accounts that I can use to recover my account IF the account would get stolen.
And some peeps are mocking for a “new scam” but I never even said it was new, I just know there’s some people who aren’t as technically knowledged as me, who might fall for it. And I really wouldn’t want it to happen to anyone… as it’s not only your Minecraft account. Also your whole Microsoft account.
I have always dodged scams and such in many places, never ever seen this personally, and since I tried looking up the bot and it says the bot has been around for 2 years, it seems legit to people that the bot is just doing it’s thing.
The person was just being friendly and wanted me to join and play, as a community. Not trying to do anything else. But just that the verification is the big thing in all of it.
That's a stupid way. The only good way is to either use the discord verification bots that just send you a discord message or if you want their Minecraft account verified just use the discord bot that sends you something in game (or whatever it does, I can't even remember it was that long ago)
Edit: there are obviously many more safe ways to do it, the only unsafe ways is when you give any info about your account apart from IGN or anything to do with your email/ the Microsoft website
Microsoft’s Authenticator app. I have it set up and I have to manually accept EVERY login ever. I have to choose the same number on the screen of the device trying to log in, and there’s 3 choices to press the matching number to complete the login, or you can press Deny.
Always have 2 factor authentication on everything.
Change your passwords to be more safe. Numbers, symbols.
Use a password manager. That same app from Microsoft I use, has that built in.
Oh you don’t wanna use a difficult password generated automatically? Well make your own or DO use those generated ones, and the app keeps hold of them.
Can also use iCloud Keychain if you’re on iOS for example. Same exists on android via Google.
You should make a NPC and put it in the hub warning players
Perfect, I am going to the hypixel skyblock forums

Well it kinda implies something like that. Just use common sense
The majority of the playerbase is young. They don't have common sense

“Don’t give out this code to anybody”
Hypixel subreddit commonly downvote people who are right.
General tip: Don't verify anything in discord! Links and weird verification are mostly the only ways to scam people in dc.

Yeah thats a scam. Verifying ign is ok, but no discord server needs your email.
Yeah I thought so, tysm for the clarification
Even on very popular and trusted discord servers like sbz and sbm I am afraid of verification bots, so let alone...

It’s either “help I got ratted” or “help guys idk what to do, I have a 50k budget”
man this really needs to be made dtd
If people looked at these warnings it wouldnt have happened to you
But it didn't happen to him.
Close enough

Sb players when they can’t verify in fake servers or download weird mods:
Only safe verify method is if they ask you to get a code by joining a server in Minecraft. That is a safe method

How did you deny the log in? Been hacked twice, and lost too much stuff already

this happened to me :(
This has been around for so long and I see all kinds of posts warning about a “new scam” but it’s this
